"Holy cannoli, that was everything." Six said in amazement as he sipped his beer, her helmet on the coffee table as a game controller was in his left hand; paying only slight attention to the match. The balaclava hiding his face.
Fionna focused on the fighting game as she tried to beat Six at the game. "Yeah, I mean, you wanted everything." She shrugged, her fighter, a samurai with bunny ears slashed at Six's character; some robot cowboy.
"I guess so, but I didn't really mean 'Oh by the way, tell me your entire life story.' Just how we ended up in this situation." Six responded as he downed his beer and focused back on the game.
"Well, I guess so, but you didn't really stop me so I just assumed you wanted me to keep going." Fionna shrugged.
"Fair enough." Six replied nonchalantly; watching as Fionna began to beat the absolute crap out of him in the game.
"Yeah." The blonde then hummed. "Still, I'm kinda surprised you accepted everything I told you so quickly."
"I've seen just as outlandish things before, besides, universe merge; remember? I'm willing to accept anything at this point. Even sadistic undead liches." Six replied as Fionna nodded in acceptance.
"That's fair." She shrugged slightly before focusing back on the game. The two trading virtual blows.
"Dang, you're way better than I am." Six grumbled out and slumped into the couch as Fionna beat him in the game not long after.
"Oh don't worry about it, I'm a pro at fighting games." She said with a cocky grin, Six huffed in mock annoyance.
"Yeah yeah, don't let it get to your head." Six replied as he set his controller down and pulled out his pip-boy, looking at the time. "Dang, getting pretty late. Ten-thirty at night."
"Really? I don't feel tired yet." Fionna put her controller down and leaned over to look at Six's pip-boy, the mailman holding the pip-boy at an angle so she could see it.
"I know but we're gonna have a pretty busy day tomorrow, so better catch some sleep while we can." Six stood up and brushed some imaginary dust off of his lap. Fionna sighed slightly before she stood up too.
"Alright." Fionna said before humming a little. "Where am I gonna be sleeping?"
"In the bed you woke up on. I'll sleep on the couch here." Six motioned to the couch they were just sitting on. Fionna looked at the couch for a moment, uncertain.
"Are you sure? I mean, this is your place isn't it?" She asked. "It'd feel wrong to-" Six cut her off with a chuckle as he shook his head in amusement.
"Oh relax Fi, you're a guest and I'm just being a good host. So get some shut-eye, and besides; I've slept in far worse places." Six said before chuckling again like it was some inside joke only he knew.
Fionna hesitated again before nodding at her friend. "Alright." She shrugged before walking towards the room she had woken up in earlier. "Night Six." She said before plopping herself down on the bed.
"Night Fi. Sweet dreams." Six replied as he laid down on the couch, still covered head to toe in his Riot Gear. As soon as he was on the couch Six was knocked out instantly. Sleeping in his armor like a weirdo.
Fionna took off the jumpsuit Six had given her and covered herself in the warm blankets and comforter on the luxuriously soft bed. She glanced at her new metal prosthetic before drifting off to sleep. Dreams taking hold of her mind.
…
…
.
She found herself sitting at a small ornate glass table, wearing her old clothes. Her baby blue shirt and navy blue skirt. In front of her was a plate that had some strange meat on top of it. The smell almost made her gag but she held it in.
"Hello." Fionna's attention was turned to a man wearing a blue suit with white highlights, a white fox mask obscuring much of the man's head and face. Deep blue eyes glanced at her before looking down at his own plate. The same strange meat on top of the porcelain plate. He picked up a knife and fork and began to cut up his dish.
"Uh… hi." She said, the man glancing at her before looking back at his plate. "Who are you?"
"I'm Finn. One of many." He pointed his fork at her. "Just like how you're one of many Fionnas'."
"Wha- Oh! Like the multiverse?"
"Yes. Except, Hmm. I suppose that's not entirely true; that I'm like Finn. I am different than you and the others like you after all." The man shrugged as he stabbed a piece of the meat with his fork and held it near his face the mans mask came alive. The fox's maw opened to reveal rows of serrated teeth made for shredding flesh apart. The man ate the strange meat and hummed in delight, chewing with satisfaction as he eyed Fionna with his deep blue eyes.
Fionna hesitated for a moment before looking him in the eyes. "What do you mean? Different how?"
"I've been around for a while, but I was growing bored; affairs around here grew dull and repetitive. Until you and your kind came along. Then things became interesting again." The man ate another piece of the strange meat, savoring the meal with contentment; taking his time to chew the dish and savor every bite. As if it was his last meal.
"Huh…" Fionna paused to look around; both of them were in an empty dining hall. Filled with old dusty portraits and dim lighting, cobwebs clung to the ceiling and dirt lined the floor of the hall.
"Mhm. Say, how about a… deal shall we say." Finn said as he placed his utensils down and crossed his fingers.
"Uh-huh." Fionna sighed. "Listen, no offense. But this sounds incredibly shady." She told 'Finn'.
"Fair enough." Finn shrugged in response. "But still, take this deal and I'll keep an eye out for you and protect you when necessary. And I'll have someone teach you the basics here and there."
"Right. So, what's the catch?" She crossed her arms and looked at the weird masked man expectantly. The mask that Finn wore morphed somewhat, the fox's maw growing into a toothy grin as his blue eyes shined with excitement. A faint snickering came from him as he
"All I want is a good show." He replied, nonchalant as his fox mask returned to its stoic demeanor. A complete one-eighty from how enthusiastic he had been just a moment ago. "Is that so much?"
Fionna narrowed her eyes at 'Finn' and shook her head. "Yeah no, sorry. I don't trust you."
"Aw, dangit." Finn whined out in a petulant tone of voice; like a child that couldn't get a new toy; the mask gaining a sad expression like he was about to cry. "Phooey. Oh well." He shrugged. Regaining his stoic demeanor one more.
"Not my job to force you into the deal. But you'll want my help eventually, so don't forget; I'll always be here." The mask morphed into a grin before Finn started waving goodbye to Fionna.
"Hey, wakey wakey."
"Huh, whar?" She moaned out still half asleep as Six stood right next to her; shaking her gently.
"Wakey wakey, is time for school." Six continued to shake her shoulder, trying to wake her up.
"Noooo." She whimpered at the news and tried to hide under her blanket. As if it would magically make Six go away. But a second later she realized something.
"Wait a minute." Fionna sat up and glared at Six. "I don't have to go to school anymore!" She said while pointing at Six and frowning at him, displeased at having been woken up.
"Is that right?" Six asked mockingly before shrugging. "Ok, go back to sleep. More pancakes for me." He said and turned around, moving to leave. Fionna glared at his back for a moment, the smell of freshly made buttery pancakes quickly becoming apparent to her. She then jumped out of the bed.
"W-Wait for me!" She said as she hastily put the vault suit back on and ran out of the room and into the small living room. Two plates were stacked with pancakes that were drowning in syrup and next to the plates were two mugs with what smelled like hot chocolate. Six was next to the TV, sorting through a box of holotapes.
"Well well well. Couldn't resist my famous pancakes could ya?" Six jokingly asked as he glanced at her before looking back at the holotapes for a moment before grabbing one.
"Also, you wanna watch Snakes on the Pain Train? One of my favorite comedies." He said while gesturing to the holotape, Fionna shrugging before sitting down on her side of the couch. Grabbing her plate of pancakes and a fork; stabbing one of the flap jacks and biting into it.
"Sure man." She said simply, causing Six to nod as he inserted the holotape into a player. Watching as the TV screen came to life, Six grabbed the remote and went over to the couch, and sat down next to Fionna. Taking off his helmet, once again revealing his balaclava. He grabbed his own plate and hit play on the remote, and the movie started.
As she took a sip of her hot chocolate Fionna remembered the strange dream she had before Six woke her up.
"Oh! Before I forget, I had a really weird dream last night." She said, causing Six to hum to himself.
"What was it about?" He asked before eating one of his pancakes. Fionna hummed as she gathered what she could from the dream.
"Well, there was this really weird guy in an old suit and some fox mask covering his face." She tapped his chin, recalling more of the strange dream. "And he said some weird stuff, something about a TV show I think?" She continued with a shrug.
"Huh." Six replied simply. "That is weird." He continued before focusing his attention back on the movie. Fionna shrugged and continued to eat, watching the movie with Six. The current scene was some guy wrestling with a velociraptor, beating it down with his bear arms.
Literally, he had bear arms.
Once they were done with breakfast Six paused the movie and the both of them moved into the main room in the SINK. Six glanced at her for a moment before snapping his fingers.
"Oh right! I almost forgot, gimme a moment." He said before rushing back into the living room, rummaging for something. Fionna raised an eyebrow and shrugged and walked around the SINK hall, looking at the oddities around.
But she stopped for a moment and gasped when she saw a little itty bitty robot rolling around on a singular wheel. Its face is a TV screen showing a cute smiling mug that she just couldn't resist.
Making her way to the robot she knelt down to its height and gushed at it. "Hello! Oh you're so cute! What's your name cutie?" She asked the robot as she began to pet it, the miniature securitron recoiling slightly. Letting out a distressed beep.
["Hey! Hands off lady! NOW GIVE ME SOME FUCKING MUGS! GOD, I NEED SOME DAMN MUGS RIGHT NOW!"} The robot screeched out, Fionna cringing and holding her hands up in surrender. The robot paused and calmed down almost instantly as if a switch had been pushed.
["I-I'm sorry, I can't control it. Literally. I was programmed to be addicted to mugs by that piece of shit O."] The robot said bitterly, venom and resentment obvious in his voice, Fionna gazed at the robot with sympathy and pity. Gently she began petting the robot again, trying to calm it down. The tactic working oddly enough. The robot's TV face dimmed slightly.
["Thanks… I'm Muggy. You the lady Doctor Six brought back?"] Muggy asked and Fionna nodded.
"Yup, I'm Fionna. Nice to meet you." She told the robot, holding out a hand. Muggy shook her hand with his little claws.
["Nice to meet you too, and again, sorry about earlier. It's been a while since I had an outburst like that."]
"Oh it's fine, don't sweat it." She replied with a small smile, giving the robot another small pat. Just then, Six walked into the room. Holding a pristine-looking pip-boy 3500 in his hands.
Six then noticed Muggy and reached into his coat and pulled out a large mug. The robot paused as he eyed the mug, when Six set it down the robot rushed forward and grabbed the mug before speeding off while cackling madly. Fionna frowned somewhat before sighing.
"I see you met Muggy." Six said off handily as he focused back on the device in his hands.
"Yeah, he seems nice… But why is he like that? Like… ya know?"
"He's Neurotic; I tried to remove that trait from his programming but it's so deeply ingrained that it would damage his personality core. So all I can do so far was lessen it." Six said with a shrug, pausing when he saw the confused look on Fionna's face.
"Uh, Neurotic? That's… bad right?"
"Yeah. Uh, basically he has an obsessive compulsion regarding mugs and other ceramics, like plates. But it's mainly mugs."
"So, like an addiction? I remember Muggy saying it was one." She reasoned, trying to figure out the robot's condition; Six tilted his head in confusion before sighing and shaking his head.
"Well, No, not at all. Muggy's obsession with mugs stems from his programming, it's something he was built to do. Break down ceramics into their base components. An Efficient recycling method because of the resource crisis. But this… place, the brains that ran this place. It was never enough just to let things be. No no no, they had to play God." Six's demeanor shifted noticeably, visibly tense for a moment before relaxing once more and chuckling slightly.
"Eh, it's all in the past anyways. Water under the bridge and all that." He said with a shrug, Fionna unsure of what to make of The Courier's sudden shift in mood.
"Yeah, I guess." She muttered, Six glanced at her momentarily before looking back down at the pip-boy.
"Yeah, it is what it is. Anyways. Surprise." Six said as he showed her the device, Fionna grabbing the strange phone-looking device. She noticed a button on its side and pressed it; the screen came to life as a cartoony man wearing a jumpsuit popped on. Giving Fionna a wink and a thumbs up and then the screen showed her name above the same mascot from earlier.
Her vitals were displayed next to the mascot and all looked green.
"Woah, what is this?"
"That's the Pip-boy 3500, a lil something I cooked up when I had too much free time on my hands." Six said with a shrug. "So far, there's only ten of 'em and you've got the latest and greatest." The Courier explained.
"Oh! Neat." Fionna looked back down at the device and smiled somewhat. "Thanks, Six." She said as she put the device in her pocket.
"No problem, and one last thing." He then reached into his coat again and pulled out a familiar-looking green backpack. Fionna's eyes widened as she grabbed the pack excitedly.
"My pack!" She grabbed the backpack and immediately strapped it onto her back, the familiar weight of the pack a welcome comfort. "Thank you Six." She said, genuinely grateful.
"Ah think nothing of it." Six said, waving off the thanks. "It was pretty easy to patch up anyways."
"Still, thank you." Fionna replied, Six nodded and pulled out his pip-boy. Glancing at it.
"Hmm. Alright, we better get going now if we're gonna have any time to spare." Six put the pip-boy back into his coat and pulled out a strange-looking device resembling a detonator with some lighting crystal stuck in the middle.
"C'mon, I know a shortcut." Six said with a cheeky grin before wrapping an arm around Fionna's shoulder and pulling the trigger. Before the girl knew it the two were engulfed in a flash of light.
And just as quickly the light faded and Fionna found herself in what looked like a small fortress. Tall, robust concrete walls with a watchtower at each corner. In the middle of the base was a large flagpole with a flag she could barely see waving high above.
People wearing heavy tan combat armor patrolled the area alongside tall robots that looked a bigger version of muggy, the soldiers wielding assault rifles and what looked like energy weapons, their faces obscured by a tinted visor and a small respirator. But something else quickly caught her eye.
"They're… they're humans!" She gasped in shock, looking around as men and women in more casual military fatigues walked about. She even saw what looked like Orcs and ghouls, walking freely among the humans and helping each other with tasks around the base.
Six glanced at her in confusion. "Yeah…" Six then hummed to himself in thought. "I suppose there aren't that many humans in your dimension, eh?" He asked the girl.
"There are a few but…" she looked around in awe, at how many people were in the base. "It's still weird to see so many in one place. Cause, well, for the longest time I thought…" She trailed off and continued to look around. Six connecting the dots in his head.
He gently patted Fionna on the shoulder. "I understand, we'll slow down a bit then. Let you take it all." He said, Fionna tried to wave it off.
"Oh, uh, Thanks. But it's minor really I-" She paused and looked at Six again, a sudden light bulb flashed in her mind. "I just realized you're also a human." Fionna muttered, feeling dumb for not realizing it sooner. Six just chuckled to himself and shook his head.
"Nah, I ain't human. I used to be, but not anymore." He said with a shrug; Fionna raised an eyebrow in confusion. "What is that supposed to mean?" She asked.
"Eh. Don't worry too much about it. C'mon, walk and talk." Six told her before quickly switching subjects, walking towards one of the buildings, Fionna following close behind. A few soldiers stopped to salute Six as he walked by while others gave respectful nods.
"Anywho, welcome to Fort Nipton, named after the nearby town of Nipton. Creative I know. But yeah, this place is just a little East of the Border Checkpoint and the Long 15 DMZ." Six explained, Fionna furrowing her eyebrows in confusion at the sudden geography lesson.
"Dmz? What does that mean? And the border? Like, another Kingdom?"
"First, DMZ means 'Demilitarized zone' and they're not a kingdom. The NCR is a Republic technically. But yeah, we share a border with them and to put it incredibly simply I kinda pissed them off a few years ago." Six said before snickering to himself. "Nothing worth going to war over, but aside from trade and tourism; they don't like us too much."
Fionna tapped her chin in contemplation. "So… is that why this fort was made? As a second line of defense… just in case?" She asked, Six nodded at the question.
"Basically, yeah. There are other bases that will jump in if the Shi…" Six paused, catching himself before he said a curse word. "If those morons in the NCR congress do declare war, there are other bases to fend them off. But in that scenario, the men and women here will be the first responders if the checkpoint falls."
"Hmm." Fionna hummed as she looked around the base one more time, the concrete buildings looked solidly built and could very well take a hit. The guys in the armor looked vicious and well-trained, along with the orcs that looked like they could tear most monsters apart with their bare hands.
"What's with those green guys, and the people with the uh… skin conditions." Fionna glanced at Six, the Courier humming to himself in thought.
"Well first things first, they're still human. Even if they do look different; The Meta-Humans, the big green guys, are the result of the FEV and some kind of pre-war super soldier program. And the Necro-Humans, the ones that have their skin falling off, are born when a human infected by a small dosage of the FEV, absorbs a large amount of radiation."
"Huh, and the FEV? What's that?"
"An incredibly complicated can of worms we'll get to some other day. Any other questions?"
Fionna tapped her chin in thought before glancing to the right and saw a few people in giant suits of armor wielding heavy-looking mini-guns and what looked like rocket launchers. However, there was a shocking amount of variation between the armored guys. They all had the same armor; just different decorations on said armor.
"Who are those guys? And what's with their really cool-looking armor? Also, why do they all look so different from each other."
Six glanced at the power-armored troops and let out a small chuckle. "Those guys are the 'Armored Assault Corp.', essentially shock-troops. And let's just say that 'ideological' differences are the main reason for now, cause getting into the nitty gritty will take too long for now."
Some of the armored guys looked normal, their armor a bog-standard grey with no decoration. The armor itself looked angular yet sleek at the same time, bulky but also weirdly graceful. The helmet also looked like an angry bird, something Fionna found a little funny. When they spotted Six they immediately sent him a sharp salute. Six waving at them in return.
While others just looked incredibly gaudy.Silver armor with ivory inlay, a billowing red cape with chains attached to their shoulder plates along with a plumage atop their helmets. A tabard worn over their chest plate, with the symbol of a sword stuck between two gears on the cloth.
The third and final group of the armored troops had black and white armor, with all kinds of various decals scattered all over the armor. The decals ranged from skulls and crossbones to silhouettes of various monsters. However, the one thing that united the group was a Bright red E surrounded by stars displayed on the chest of the armor.
To Fionna, it seemed that the groups with decorations were glaring at each other from afar, their weapons at the ready. As if they were about to fight and tear the camps apart. However, one of the gaudy types noticed Fionna and Six; pointing at them. Slowly the venom-filled glares were turned toward the two. Particularly at Six. If looks could kill then half a dozen laser beams would have shot the Courier and disintegrated him on the spot.
Fionna was shocked by the glares at first before she crossed her arms and glared back at the power-armored troopers. A part of her wanted to go over there and punch them in their stupid faces for the blatant disrespect.
"Don't worry about em." Six said, grabbing her shoulder gently, his voice grounding her as she glanced at him. Six was not at all worried about the death glares directed at him, if anything he seemed amused by it. The Courier mockingly waved at the two groups.
"Heyo guys! How goes the dick measuring?" He asked in a completely genuine tone of voice. "I mean, I don't mind a lil sword fight every now and then but out in the open guys? C'mon." Six continued as if lecturing a bunch of rowdy teenagers. The two groups looked indignant; with a few looking as if they were going to march toward the Courier with less than friendly intentions.
"Oh? What's all this then?" Six said, stepping forward to meet the few brave enough to approach him. The other power-armored troops immediately turned tail, leaving their comrades to their fate.
Other personnel stopped what they were doing and watched on, either too scared to stop what was about to happen or secretly glad that the hotshot shock troopers were finally going to get put in their place.
"Shut up and listen you damn wastelander." One of them growled out through the speaker of his helmet, the man a part of the gaudy armored troops. The others moved to circle Six in some vain attempt to intimidate the man.
"Really? We're going to do this?" Six then laughed before shrugging. "Alright then." He muttered before the same Paladin jabbed a metal finger at Six's chest.
"I said shut up! I don't care who the hell you think you are! You're lucky I'm still Loyal to McNamara or-" The Paladin was cut off when Six grabbed his metal gauntlet, almost effortlessly pinning it in place even as the Paladin tried to rip the gauntlet free of Six's grasp.
"Or what?" The Courier leaned in closer to the Paladin. "You'll pull out more empty threats? Show everyone how much of a macho badass you are, sticking it to the Big Bad Mailman." The Courier barked out a laugh before pushing the Paladin to the ground, the power-armored troop collapsing hard on his back; humiliated.
The Courier glared at the other corp members that had surrounded him. All of them looked too terrified to actually do anything to help the Paladin. Seemingly they were just waiting for someone else to step forward first. Six almost felt bad for them, almost.
"A bunch of hollow tin men, how pathetic. You're all shit. The ideals you believe in so fanatically are shit. So guess what? Your threats mean less than shit." Six glared at the shock troopers, daring any of them to step forward. And one of them did.
One whose armor was covered head to toe in flame decals stepped forward, false bravado causing them to move forward. Fist raised high in an attempt to slug the Courier with their armored fist.
But they didn't make it far as something slammed into their helmet, denting the metal slightly and cracking one of the ballistic eyepieces. The shock trooper tilted sideways for a moment before crashing down; knocked completely unconscious with a single right hook.
Fionna stood over the unconscious shock trooper, her cybernetic fist slightly scratched. She then glared at the rest of the power-armored mooks.
"Back. Off." She growled out, the other personnel muttering among themselves at the blonde's insane strength. The corp members backed off, their fear doubling in an instant as they looked at Both Six and Fionna in shock and terror.
Six looked at the knocked-out trooper before glancing at Fionna, a wide grin under his mask as he began to chuckle before he started to clap.
"Bravo! Damn good right hook you have, damn good." Six said jubilantly, and it was only then that Fionna realized that she had become the center of attention. The only sound is Six continuing to laugh as if someone getting knocked out was the funniest thing in the world.
"Jesus, oh that was good. Anyways." Six pointed at the Paladin. "You." He then began pointing at the other troopers that had attempted to intimidate him.
"You, you, and you. Congratulations! You've all been promoted to civilian. Please deposit all of your equipment to the quartermaster and leave, you have an hour."
"But-"
"I don't recall asking you a god damned thing!" Six bellowed out as he glared at the former trooper, nothing but absolute hatred in the Courier's gaze before he shifted back to his laid-back attitude and pointed to two personnel wearing mechanic jumpsuits.
"You two!" He said, pointing at them; the mechanics looked confused before one of them pointed at themself.
"Yes, the two of you." He then pointed at the unconscious trooper. "Cut this guy out of their armor and then uh… I don't know, have a recon patrol drop them off near… Arizona." Six said, snapping his fingers and then chuckling at the thought. "Yeah! Arizona, that'd be pretty funny."
"Anyways, I've wasted enough time already. Fionna c'mon, we'll get the gear then get out." Six said casually before walking off.
"Oh, uh. Sure." She muttered as she followed him, trying to ignore the awkward silence that fell over the camp as things slowly calmed back down.
Fionna glanced back at the former troopers, stewing after making the dumbest mistakes of their entire lives.
"Six… uh, what was all that?" She asked the Courier, who just shrugged.
"What was what about?" He replied nonchalantly like it didn't really matter. Fionna huffed and glared at Six.
"You know what I mean. Everyone else gave you respect like they knew who you were. And then those bad biscuits acted like you went boom boom in their cereal." She said gesturing towards the troops. However, Six giggled to himself.
"Wait, wait. Bad Biscuits and uh, boom boom?" Six questioned in between giggles. Fionna pouted at Six and crossed her arms petulantly. Six noticing and pausing.
"Uh… sorry." He muttered softly, feeling a little bit bad. Fionna sighed before nodding. "It's fine, just, what's the deal with all that?"
"It's… a really long story." Six said as he rubbed his mask. "I'll tell you the details that matter when we have some time. But long story incredibly short, When I built this nation and an army and a government capable of controlling it all. I made a lot of enemies."
"Oh." She said simply before looking around again, at the fortress and based on what Six had told her. She wondered what kind of person the man beside her was exactly.
"Ya know, considering your 'title' I assumed you were just a really hardcore mailman." She admitted with a sardonic grin. Six glanced at her for a moment before gasping in mock offense.
"I'll have you know that I'm far more than just a 'mailman', and that term is an incredibly low blow." Six said sarcastically. "In fact, I have been known as the monstrous Lord Death of Murder Mountain! Apologize and I may show you mercy yet!" Six bellowed out as he loomed over her, arms outstretched and ready to lay down the fury that cause thousands to quake in fear.
"Oh glob! Anything but that. If only someone was here to save me. Oh boo-hoo-hoo." She cried out sardonically, adding in an exaggerated cry. Six just giggled at the display like a little kid would. Fionna joined him in laughing as they continued to walk.
"Alright, I get how it is, jackass." The Courier muttered out
She then glanced at her new friend; everything about him was weird, to say the least. But… he was fun to hang out with and seemed like a good enough person.
Eventually, Six led her to a square concrete building, when they entered the smell of oil and smoke became quickly apparent. The room they were in was sparsely decorated aside from a blue and grey flag that hung from a wall to her left; in the middle of the flag was a single white star that had a laurel underneath it while what looked like sabers hovered over the star.
The symbolism was lost on her. She then turned her attention to the right and saw a large counter with a woman wearing overalls and a green jumpsuit behind said counter. Her back turned as it looked like she was repairing something, her brown hair tied up in a ponytail.
Six casually strolled up to the counter, Fionna walking next to him. And then, she realized another strange thing about Six. His footsteps didn't make any sound.
Before she could bring it up they were already at the counter and The Courier spoke up to catch the quartermaster's attention. "Morning Ma'am, I'm interested in borrowing some of your firearms." Fionna glanced at Six, confused.
His voice had changed drastically; it was now deep and husky, and the only familiar aspect was the friendly, almost childish tone that he spoke with. In fact, now that Fionna thought about it; Six's voice had changed when those Bleb-Blobs confronted him earlier.
The quartermaster turned her head around, an annoyed look in her brown eyes before she froze in place for a moment, her eyes widening and her mouth agape. She quickly regained her composure and turned to face the Courier and snapped a salute.
"Sir! Yes sir! I'll-"
"Oh enough of that." Six said with a wave of his hand. "Just call me Six." He continued with a shrug, the quartermaster looked surprised for a moment before nodding.
"A-Alright. So uh, what do you need s-Six?" She asked him, The Courier then gestured to Fionna.
"Well, my friend needs some equipment. We can take her to the store room and let her pick what she wants." Six said casually, the quartermaster narrowing her eyes at the blonde.
"Are you sure? Handing out military equipment to a civilian is-"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I know for a fact you guys have a large surplus stashed away, no one is going to miss it." The Quartermaster still looked unsure.
"I mean, I'd have to ask for permission-"
"You have my permission." Six cut her off before chuckling to himself. "Besides, who's gonna tell me no?" Sarcasm dripped from his cheeky reply. The quartermaster contemplated the words before nodding.
"Well. Alright, follow me." She said, leading them to a door behind the counter. The quartermaster opened it with one of many keys, allowing them entry into the Barracks Armory.
Inside were a dozen cages filled with all kinds of firearms alongside weapon crates that housed further armaments including explosives; with a few crates containing surplus armor. A large number of ammo boxes sat next to the crates and cages. In the middle of the room was a large steel table.
The quartermaster opened one of the cages and grabbed a rifle, clearing the chamber and checking to see if it was empty before snatching a pistol and doing the same. She then brought both weapons over and placed them on the table.
"This is the R91A2," She began, gesturing to the black rifle with some small red markings. "Standard issue. Polymer and Aluminum construction decreases weight while still being durable. It's seven pounds in total and is thirty-three inches in length with a ten-inch barrel. The rate of fire is Five-hundred rpm and it's accurate up to 300 yards. Along with a gas-operated short-stroke piston to aid in handling."
Fionna picked up the weapon hesitantly, unsure of what to do with it as the quartermaster continued to talk about the Rifle. "Fires 5.56, and you see that small lever near the trigger?" She asked the blonde spotting it and nodding.
"That's the fire selector, currently it's on safe and it won't fire. However, the rifle had three other fire modes; Semi, Burst fire, and full auto." Fionna looked at the switch and what it was pointing at, a small X marked in red. The other red markings were bullets that increased in volume.
"Uh huh, alright," Fionna muttered before putting the rifle back down. The quartermaster then picked up the pistol. It was grey and a little bulky looking.
"This is the N99, Chambered in 10mm and able to take twelve-round magazines. Gas-operated recoil system with the pistol having a polymer grip and a steel-alloy construction. Weighs two pounds." She then handed the pistol over to Fionna, the blonde grabbing the pistol and pointing it downwards. An uneasy look on her face, something Six noticed.
"Something wrong?" He asked her, getting closer.
"Uh… yeah, yeah. It's just… I'm not really a gun gal, ya know? But, if you guys have any swords I'd like to look over those." She then put the pistol down, Six humming before nodding at her words.
"I get that, some prefer getting up close and personal while others just don't like violence at all. It's understandable." Six grabbed the pistol and inspected it for a moment. He then turned to the quartermaster, his friendly disposition gone in an instant.
"You, get back to your post immediately." He ordered, his deep unnervingly calm voice commanding absolute respect; his tone even and neutral, not even a hint of emotion behind his words—just pure, oppressive apathy.
The quartermaster froze in fear, those soulless red lenses looking right through her. It felt like she had made eye contact with a deathclaw that was just five feet away from her.
"Y-Yes sir!" She snapped a salute and hastily left the room, Six turning his gaze towards Fionna. The girl took a step back from the Courier, frightened by the sudden shift in his attitude.
"S-Six what's wrong? Why did you…" She trailed off as Six looked back down at the pistol, studying it closely.
"Listen, Fi. I want you to understand how important this is, this right here?" He gripped the pistol tighter. "Out here in the wasteland, this can be the difference between life and death."
He twirled the gun around in his hand, holding it by the barrel, and held it out to Fionna. The blonde looked at the pistol hesitantly, still unsure.
"But… I can still defend myself with just a sword. Thanks Six, but I don't need it."
"Mhm. Unless you happen to have a suit of power armor in your pocket, you're not going to survive long out there without this. I don't know how it was back in your dimension, but you have to adapt. You don't have to like it, but you need this to survive. I've seen what happens to people that ran headlong into a gunfight with nothing but a knife. I don't want that to happen to you." Six explained, trying to be reasonable and get her to see things practically.
Fionna stared into the lenses of his mask before looking down at the pistol and hesitantly grabbing it. Taking it from Six's hand and holding it in her own. "I… Six."
"Yeah?"
"You said you've seen people die." She muttered out, barely a whisper, but Six heard her perfectly clear. "When you say people… you mean Humans don't you?"
"... Yeah."
"And… have you…" She trailed off, bile rising in her through as her heart hammered in her chest.
"Yes. I have killed other Humans." Six said in a neutral tone of voice, admitting without so much as a hint of regret in his voice. Fionna's eyes widened in shock and disbelief; like a part of her refused to believe that Six could hurt anyone. But she knew better.
"Oh." She said simply, downcast as she continued to look at the pistol
"Fionna." Six walked closer and gently put his hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her. "You have to understand, more often than not; it was self-defense. Plain and simple." Six squeezed her shoulder reassuringly.
"And I can guarantee that ninety-nine percent of the people I've killed had it coming." Six continued, pure vitriol and disgust in his voice as he thought about even a fraction of the people he's killed.
Fionna nodded before hesitating. "And… the other one percent. What about them?" She asked, looking up at Six. The Courier glanced away for a brief moment before locking eyes with her again.
"We're wasting time, let's get you equipped." He said plainly, leaving no room for argument, and solidifying his position by turning away and scrounging through one of the armor cases.
Fionna looked at Six momentarily before glancing down at the pistol in her hands. It just fully hit her, Six's world was so drastically different from her own. This was how things were going to be from now on. She wondered if that Fox-faced jerk was getting his entertainment's worth.
Waddup bro army! It's me, I'm back unfortunately still alive. You'll just have to deal with me for a lil while longer and the hash I sling your way ;)
Anyways, timetables are moving some stuff will show up later then expected but Cake will 100% show up in the next chapter along with her Hubby Lord Monochromeicorn. With them they bring a legitimate reason to go East that will expand into the plot. Hooray for connecting plot points that make sense!
