Holy shit, I'm going to have to find some time to both finish this chapter and write another before the month ends. Despite that, I've been enjoying the latest episodes and how they're handling the collapse of the old order and how that affects the characters. AFO is also just a blast as a villain as while him blowing up Lady Nagant was cruel-it wasn't stupid as he figured she wasn't onboard, and moved to ensure she wouldn't be of much use to the heroes should she flip back to them, though I do feel her surviving kinda downplays that, IDK, tell me what you all think in your reviews, as well as what you think of this chapter. I won't waste any more of your time, let's get into it.
Chapter 56: Moving in
"The new dorms aren't just a means to protect the students, but as a means of addressing another concern," Nezu said as he watched the students gathering in the school's main campus, with concerns for their safety, UA had rapidly built student and teacher dorms around 5 minutes walk away from the main campus. But there was another purpose.
"Believe me, sir, I wouldn't have suggested it if there wasn't some evidence of it." Alfred, the ever-observant head of security spoke up, the man standing by his smaller boss, though his expression didn't change all that much. "Even if the same can be said about the teachers."
"To be honest, I'm not sure which would be worst; a fellow educator and hero being a double agent or one of the young minds we're charged with educating having already been swayed to the other side," Nezu told him, as either option would be a terrible thing.
"At least with a student, it wouldn't mean that we were all duped for years. But the investigation will carry one, and with these new dorms, we can monitor the students closely, even knowing when they leave campus and for how long." Alfred replied, crossing his arms in his well-pressed suit as he looked down at the students, seeing their teachers meeting with their homeroom classes or friends talking to one another in groups as they waited for the last of them to arrive.
"That still leaves the teachers, have you any ideas on how to approach that?" Nezu asked him. The teachers had agreed to carry on like normal, but there was a sense of mistrust in the faculty lounge, one he couldn't say he was upset with, as the idea of a traitor among them was a bitter pill to swallow.
"A small, but proven effective one. We carry on as normal, but whenever one of us meets with you, you tell us a slightly different thing about events or school security. Make it known that we're not supposed to talk about whatever that thing may be as well." Alfred replied, Nezu catching onto what he was saying quickly.
"So, we can study how the villains react, and depending on what information they seem to be working with," Nezu started, but rather than his normal smile, he had a frown on his face.
"We'll know who's the leak if there is one among us," Alfred replied. He would admit, it wasn't full proof, as if there was a traitor among them, and they managed to overhear what another is told, they could suspect their motives and either use the overheard information to test the waters, or go to ground.
"I'll take that into account, though it is sad that we have to consider such things. There has been an air of unease around the school, even the 3rd years have been on edge." Nezu told him, getting the Englishmen to scoff.
"I would call them fools if they weren't. UA has been attacked three times, first the gate, then the USJ and now the summer camp." Alfred listed off their recent failures. "And with All Might fully retired, our biggest deterrent against crime and the greatest defender is gone." The man sighed, he had known that he was weakening, they all did but to see it happen…
"Hasn't Endeavour resolved more cases, Alfred?" Nezu asked him, getting him to pause as he considered how to answer the question.
"He has, but he's never had the same presence as All Might. Even if he could match Yagi blow for blow, the man was always more an enforcer than a protector. He scares villains, sure but few are assured by his arrival." Alfred had seen similar heroes in the UK, men and women that did their jobs all right, that were extremely competent, intelligent and powerful but were seen like attack dogs. Even if you know logically, they were there to protect you, you couldn't shake the feeling that you should keep your distance, a feeling not helped by the fact many of them are terrible when it came to interacting with the public, coming off as sleazy, short-tempered, stickler for the rules, or needlessly violent.
"I read through his record from his time here, that much about him hasn't changed," Nezu replied, as he had gone through the man's file when he first saw young Shoto's name in the recommendation list, wanting to have an idea of the man's past to help ensure he wasn't merely using his status to get his son into his alma mater. It was safe to say that he shared many traits with young Bakugo, but was noted to be even more competitive as he worked himself to the bone to achieve top marks in all his classes, and wouldn't react well when shown up by others.
Setting aside what that thought would lead to, at least for the moment, the principal put a smile on his face. "Despite that, what we need right now is positive energy."
With the two first-year hero classes, just about all of them were present, having gotten permission from their families to not only continue to study at UA but to move into the dorms as well. "Sweet, we all got the go-ahead to move in?" Sero asked the students, happy that it seemed like the group was all there.
"It took a lot of convincing from my parents." Hagakure sighed as she could recall how had her mother grilled All Might and Aizawa while she sat there, embarrassed and scared they wouldn't be able to get her to remain at UA.
"Mine were pretty much sold on it before All Might and Aizawa-sensei even came to see them," Jiro replied, laughing a little as she recalled how her dad tried to act tough but had already decided to say yes.
"Mother wasn't too thrilled about it," Koda spoke up, though it was in his normal soft tone. "But she agreed so long as I call every night."
Kirishima moved to his side, throwing an arm around his shoulders as he gave the taller guy a shark-toothed smile. "Mine too!"
"My folks were pretty cool with it, so long as I keep my grades up and look after myself," Tsuburaba noted, as his dad had been pretty straight with him on that, and also joking about keeping himself in check as high school was no time for kids.
"That's a relief, you guys didn't get outta there without injury. My family wasn't too happy about me remaining at UA, and wanted me to transfer." Shoji replied, his arms having been fully healed thanks to Recovery Girl but it wasn't a pretty sight on the night of the attack.
"It was the same with my parents, my grandmother especially wished that I leave UA for safety concerns, but my mother managed to talk him down." Shishida adjusted his glasses, his grandmother especially wasn't happy with it as he had nearly been killed by one of the nomu.
"We're glad to see the teachers got to come back as well. The people at the conference seemed pretty upset with you." Asui spoke up, directing their attention towards their teachers, who up till now had been silent.
"I agree, it was shameful that they just hauled such insults at you." Shiozaki agreed with her as she couldn't help but feel anger as she watched the conference.
"Insults or no, we were just as surprised to be informed that the teacher roaster was straying the same." Vlad King replied although Aizawa expected that it was more because the administration didn't have the time to replace the lot of them. However, but any of them could speak up, Yaoyorozu raised her hand, a confused and worried look on her face.
"Speaking of people leaving, where's Midoriya and Tokoyami? Are they not moving in?" At her question, the group realized that neither was present.
"I heard Midoriya was hurt pretty bad," Komori whispered to Yanagi, a sentiment that carried through the class, but was concentrated with the unsanctioned rescue team who had seen his condition with their own eyes, Bakugo scowling even harder than normal as Tetsutetsu's fists tightened.
"Aizawa?" Kendo asked the man, worried that their classmate had dropped out.
"Both their parents agreed, they're just running lat-here they are." Vlad King started but changed mid-sentence as he saw the two approaching them. The two classes turned to see them and were surprised by the sight. Tokoyami looked as he regularly did, though it was what he was doing that drew their attention as he was pushing a wheelchair, one occupied by the class 1A rep. Midoriya looked…smaller than he normally did, he didn't have that aura of strength and will he seemed to give off without thinking, but now it was of exhaustion and fear, with the scarf around his face covering his nose and mouth despite the fact it was still pretty warm out.
He had bags under his eyes and wasn't looking at them, rather his gaze remained on his bag which he had resting on his lap. His short sleeves revealed scars running up his arms from deep cuts and burns, no doubt some of the many the league left him within the short time he was under their 'care'. His left leg, however, was the biggest draw of the eye as it was inside some kind of brace, making it clear that it couldn't support his weight at the moment, never mind allow him to kick anything.
All of them lowered their cheery mood as the reality of what happened hit them like a ton of bricks. "Shit…" Kaibara looked away, an uncomfortable look on his face as the wheelchair-bound boy approached them, but this didn't dissuade others as Uraraka, Iida and Kodai were already rushing to see him.
"Midoriya!" The three yelled as they run up to him, though Kodai was notably quieter than the other two. However, before they could get close, Dark Shadow appeared and pushed them back, keeping a good distance between them.
"Kindly step away from him, lack of personal boundaries will not aid him," Tokoyami told them, getting them to stop and see that Midoriya had been a little surprised, and…scared by their rush? Of course, he was, Uraraka felt like an idiot for not realizing that sooner.
"What he said." Dark Shadow merely repeated his master's words as he retreated into his body. With this said, they approached him, but much slower now as Uraraka got close enough to hug her friend. She was soon joined by Iida and Kodai.
"We're glad you're here." She whispered, tightening her hug as much as she dared, a gesture that was…slowly returned by Midoriya.
"…Thank you." If they picked up on the fact his response was slow and hesitant, they didn't comment as they moved back, giving him space to be wheeled closer to the group.
"Now that we're all here, we can continue. Before we can explain the dorm assignments, we need to address the issue of the provisional licenses." Aizawa started, jumping straight into the deep end to save time.
"Oh yeah, with all the crazy that happened, I totally forgot about it," Honenuki said, recalling why they went camping, to begin with.
"Are we still going to be given the chance?" Sero asked.
"We'll fit in some last-minute training for them later, however, keep in mind we'll push you to your limits to make up for lost time as something that we didn't tell you before the camp was the fact provisional license exams are typically for 2nd and 3rd years." Vlad King replied, surprising them with the second piece of info they were only just learning.
"Because of that, you'll be going up against students who of had much more time to train than you, and gain proper experience in internships." He carried on, making it clear that this would have been an uphill battle for them, regardless of if the summer camp had been attacked or not.
"But onto the elephant in the room. Tokage, Tetsutetsu, Kendo, Shiozaki, Bakugo, Tokoyami." As Aizawa called out to each of them, the students immediately realized that he was going with this and braced. "You all broke the rules and went to rescue Midoriya." His glare didn't let up, even if some of them tried to match it with their own, the rest of the students turned, surprised that was the case as they had seen them in the news, but had assumed that they had somehow managed to convince the heroes to allow them to help.
"From your reactions, it seems that the rest of you didn't know that." Vlad King crossed his arms, happy that it wasn't something the classes knew about, but also disappointed in three of his students, his class rep especially for going along with it.
"Let's cut to the chase, if not for All Might's retirement, I would expel the 2 from my class, something Vlad would have done as well," Aizawa told them outright, shocking them for a moment before they looked down, as those from class-1A had known this was a possibility from the beginning, this was the same man that would have expelled them on the first day if they hadn't impressed him. Regardless of this, some of the others moved to protest, or defend their actions but Vlad cut them off.
"You betrayed our trust, even if it was a cause you believed to be right. To regain that trust, you 6 all need to obey every single rule we give, to be model students. Is that understood?" He spoke, getting them all to reluctantly agree, even Bakugo though he kept his nonverbal. With that extracted from them, the two teachers turned to lead them back to their dorms.
"Good, now look alive, enjoy your new home," Aizawa told them, acting as if they hadn't crushed the mood which only made them all feel worse.
"My students are to follow me, the dorms for the two first-year hero classes are right next to each other," Vlad spoke over his shoulder, and just as the two classes were about to separate, Midoriya reached for Tokoyami, grabbing his sleeve and pulling on it, once he got his attention, he pointed towards to the 5 others.
"Friends, would you come closer? Midoriya wishes to say something." Tokayami asked for him, getting them all to pause as he gestured to the five to come forward, which they did even if they were confused by the request.
"What's up, man?" Tetsutetsu asked him, waiting for Midoriya to reply he reached for his hand, pulling it closer to him as he looked at the others.
"…Hands please." He asked them, still very much confused, they still did as asked as they reached out their hands towards Midoriya, to pull each of them close enough so that they were resting on his backpack.
"…Okay, what now?" Tokage asked a question Midoriya answered when he gently and slowly layered their hands on top of the other, with Shiozaki's at the top. With that done, he reached for his scarf, lowering it enough for them to see his closed mouth, with small scars also visible across his lower face but they didn't linger on that for long as he leaned down and kissed Shiozaki's hand before he moved back and quickly moved his scarf back into place.
"…Thank you for saving us. You were our heroes…" Even though he was speaking softly, the impact of his words was that of a sledgehammer as with him there, alive and well, they were assured that they made the right choice as Shiozaki moved to take his hand onto her own, grasping it tight.
"It's okay, you would have done the same." She told him, smiling at him that she was sure he would be returning but he shook his head.
"…Still, if not for you…we would have been made into those…things by now…" He didn't need to finish the sentence for them to all know what he was referring to, nor for them to know just how grateful he was for saving them from such a fate. Adding to this, Midoriya reached for the bag, searching for something before his eyes lit up, just a little, as he found it.
"…It's not just me…"He pulled out his hand, and in it was a handwritten letter which he opened to show them, showing off the rather poor penmanship and elementary school writing. "Kota sent a letter…he said he was sorry for socking me in the balls…" He turned it back to himself, hugging it close to his chest as he got the letter from the boy in question when he and Ragdoll were being discharged.
Midoriya wished to continue to speak, but took a moment to pause as if scared and unknowing of what to say"…" It took Tokoyami placing a hand of support on his shoulder for him to take a breath, and calm himself before he continued. "He also wanted to thank you…for saving his auntie. He's been giving her hugs every day…making sure she's doing alright…" He told them, as the boy had been latched to her the entire time he had seen them, not letting her out of his sight in fear something else would happen. It seemed to have a positive effect on Ragdoll as she doing as well as he was but could smile when Kota hugged her.
"You…you all broke the law…but I'm glad that you did." He bowed them, or as much as he could from his wheelchair. His words seemed to raise the mood again and bring smiles to the group as the teachers watched, keeping silent. Tokage hugged him here, a warm smile on her face.
"You very welcome, Midoriya." The shark-toothed girl told him, getting the others to agree with her as they replied in their way.
"You can pay us back for getting better, I wouldn't want to miss out on our re-match." Kendo placed a hand on his shoulder, smiling at him and winking as he seemed to regain a little of that strength at the fact, she wasn't treating him as any lesser.
"I will…" He nodded his head, wiping some tears away as the groups started to move towards the dorms, staying together for the most part as they intermingled. As they walked, Bakugo got close to Midoriya and passed him a fresh notebook for his hero notes.
"Happy you're safe, Deku." Bakugo didn't look at him as he handed him the get-well gifts, but Midoriya didn't need him to nor did Tokoyami mention this as he merely nodded his head as he carefully put the book into his back. As they walked, they saw the other classes being directed to their dorms, and among them was a certain sleep-deprived-looking student.
"Yo, Shinso!" Tetsutetsu called out to him, getting the boy to pause and turn from the conversation he was having with some of his general studies classmates. Seeing them, he bid them a quick word before approaching them.
"You guys doing all right?" He asked as he got close.
"Yeah, we wanted to check with you though, still not in the hero course?" Tokage asked as she was surprised he wasn't in either class yet with his performance. Unsanctioned or not, they did good work that night, they should count for something.
"I'll be joining more of your hero classes, but for now I'm kinda in a transition between General and Heroics," Shinso replied, before his gaze towards directed towards Midoriya as he reached for his hand, pulling him towards him. "Hmm, Midoriya." Not knowing what else to do, he allowed it to happen, getting the same thing the rest got from the boy, leaving him red in the face from the embarrassment as he could hear his friends laughing about but, but unlike middle school, he knew they weren't laughing at him, but because they were happy for him.
Midoriya wasn't done, as with all 6 present, he reached into his bag again, only this time he didn't pull out a letter but several small boxes for them. "Gift…" He handed one box to Shinso before he didn't the same for the rest of them. "Gift for everyone." At his encouragement, they opened them up to reveal that they housed small bracelets. Tokoyami already had his, wearing it around his wrist.
"They're bracelets, Midoriya crafted them to match our hero gear, though you may wear them anytime you wish." He explained to them as they looked them over and saw that they each would match up with their different colour schemes and styles, with Tetsutetsu's seemingly more rugged while Tokage's seemed to have the same scale pattern as her gear.
"They're real gems, and they're built with trackers and an emergency transmitter so if you're ever in need, we can help you guys out too!" Dark Shadow popped out to add more information, getting them to recall how they found him.
"Never thought this would be my first bling," Kendo said as she placed it on her wrist, allowing her hand to grow a bit and to her surprise and amazement, it grew along with her wrist, he did make them with each in mind. "How does it look?"
"Looks great, man! Can't wait to see what my hero costume would look like you this, oh maybe I should get a second man, to match!" Tetsutetsu is happy about his, thinking if he couldn't get a matching set.
"I'll see if I can't alter it to fit into a belt, is that okay?" Tokage asked, and when Midoriya nodded, she smiled in return as she was looking forward to adding it to her gear, it would add to it.
"Each dorm holds one class. Girls are on the right, and boys are on the left. The entire first floor is the common area, the kitchen, laundry and baths are all on the first floor." Aizawa explained as he opened the door for the class's dorm building, allowing them in while Tokoyami pushed Midoriya up the wheelchair ramp, one that had been hastily added after they heard about it, though Aizawa questioned why they hadn't considered them earlier. While he wondered about that fact, the students were awed as they rushed about the common area.
"Guys, we even have a courtyard!" Kaminari called out.
"So spacious and new!" Mina danced around the tv area which was so much bigger than her family's living room, thinking of all the games they could host there.
"I'm living in a mansion…!" Uraraka had a much less excited reaction as she fainted, the sheer scope of the place frying her mind but Iida managed to catch her before she hit the ground.
"Uraraka!"
As the others looked around the place, Mineta's mind had been stuck on one thing that Aizawa told them. "Do my ears deceive me? Our baths…are located in the common space?"
"They're separated by gender. And you are on thin ice, Mineta. If I hear so much as one issue about you from anyone." Aizawa didn't even turn, but it was clear to all just how irritated he was with Mineta's antics as the shortest member of the class pulled himself from his fantasies out of fear.
"Yes sir." Mineta's answer didn't inspire as much confidence as he would have liked, with both the girls and boys making mental notes to keep an eye on him just to be sure.
"Living quarters start on the next floor, there are four rooms per floor for both sides." With that done, Aizawa led them towards the first floor, waiting for Tokoyami and Midoriya to catch up as they needed to use the elevator instead of the stairs. With the group together, he opened up one of the rooms that weren't assigned to one of the students as a way to demonstrate what they look like before any alterations are made.
"You should all be comfortable with your rooms, you each get your toilets, AC, fridges for snacks and closets." He listed off the amenities as he pointed them out, with most of the students surprised that UA would go this far, while the three rich kids only looked up and nodded, and with what Aizawa had seen with the Yaoyorozu family, he no doubt thought that their daughter saw this as a major downgrade.
"This room is about the same size as my closest back home, but I can manage." And he was right, he didn't need to know what kind of bedroom she had for a room this size to be counted as a 'closet', he wasn't paid enough to make to feel like he was poor.
"She says that like it's completely normal." Jiro wondered aloud, finding it funny that Yaomomo could come away from this with that statement as for her, this was pretty dope. Certainly, beat out what apartments she would have found in the town, she didn't even need to worry about annoying neighbours.
"It's the size of my house!" Iida at this point had seen this coming and moved to catch his friend, even if he couldn't understand why she was so overwhelmed by it.
"Uraraka, please control yourself." With the show and tell done, Aizawa pulled out a mall chart and showed it to them, with it having their dorm assignments on it.
"These are your dorm assignments. The belongings you sent ahead have already been placed in your rooms so spend the day unpacking and getting settled, understand?" Aizawa asked them as they looked it over. On the boy's side, the second floor was Midoriya, Tokoyami, Aoyama and Mineta. Their next floor was Ojiro, Iida, Kaminari and Koda. After that were Bakugo, Kirishima and Shoji. With the final floor going to Sero, Todoroki and Sato.
The girls' side had Jiro and Hagakure sharing the 2nd floor to themselves. With Mina and Uraraka taking the 3rd and finally Asui and Yaoyorozu taking the final floor.
"Yes, Aizawa-sensei!"
"I'll tell you more about your lesson in the morning, but for now, get to work." He told them as he turned to leave, allowing them the time to sort through their things and style their rooms however they liked.
"Man, I'm so beat!" Later, in the evening, some of the boys had gathered down in the common area, having spent the day organising their rooms which for some, was a long and exhausting task as they long since changed out of their uniforms for it, wearing more casual clothes. With the rest in the kitchen area, making use of the space as Midoriya, with some help brewed cups of his mom's special hot chocolate for them.
"You and me, both, you done unpacking?" Sero asked Kirishima.
"Think so."
"Hot chocolate…for helping me unpack." Midoriya gave the cups to Ojiro, Tokoyami and Shoji, both accepting them with a quick thanks as they left to join the others.
"It wasn't any trouble, Midoriya. I didn't have much to unpack." Shoji told him as Ojiro nodded, as he had seen Tokoyami helping Midoriya and couldn't just stand there, it wasn't like Tokoyami didn't have his room to get to.
"Same here." The tailed quirk user said, but he still accepted the drink and with a single sip, he could tell why he called it special-it was delicious.
"I know we almost died, but it's kinda exciting to be living here." Kaminari pointed out as while it was a bummer, there was a silver lining in it.
"Yes, a unified living experience will increase your cooperation and discipline, how smart!" Iida added his two cents, which only got them to smile at the fact Iida only thought about such things in terms of benefits and detriments to their education.
"Always with your eye on the prize, Iida."
"Hiya boys, all done with your room?" Mina asked, catching their attention as the girls made their way down the stairs.
"Yup, we're just unwinding," Sato told them as Shoji took the seat next to his. Hearing this, Mina and Hagakure shared a look, and going by the smile on Mina's face, they could all tell she had something cooked up for them.
"Well, we girls have been talking and we came up with a great idea to break into the dorms," Hagakure told them.
"What would that be?" Sero asked as Todoroki drank his water, the boy claiming to be tired and just holding out for a few more minutes before he went to bed.
"We see who has the coolest room!" The two said simultaneously, which got mixed reactions as some of the boys didn't seem to care, others were pumped by the idea and three of them blanked in terror.
"All right!" Kaminari jumped to his feet, joined by Sero who had a knowing smirk on his face.
"Sounds like fun!" Sero cheered as well while Midoriya looked down, really wishing they wouldn't do this.
"Maybe this isn't the best idea…" Todoroki didn't feel like doing this as Midoriya was fruitlessly pulling on Tokoyami's shirt, trying to get them to stop but it was all in vain as they left the common area and went up to his room, opening the door to reveal that Izuku's fashion sense was in a word: Hero. Izuku had hero merch all over the place, from the All Might action figures, the Endeavour statuette in the corner, Crust bedsheets and Mirko work-out gear, it was a hero fan's dream, all of which had him slumping in his wheelchair in embarrassment as they looked around the place.
"Your room isn't that bad, Midoriya. It speaks to who you are as a person." Yaoyorozu gave him a, hopefully, encouraging pat on the shoulder, though her gaze was less on the hero merch, and more on the study table he had which all manner of books on mechanical engineering and material science, similar to what she would read.
"There's hero merch everywhere!" Uraraka looked around, laughing as she imagined her friend buying all of it piece by piece, even getting into those infamous store brawls the news liked to talk about to lighten the mood. The image of him drop-kicking another hero nerd for his Mt. Lady plushie made her laugh even harder, even if she knew he could have always just asked her for one. "You're such a fanboy!"
"…I like heroes…" If they could see his face, they would see just how much like a tomato he looked right now with all the blood rushing to his face, but at least there was another distraction from that, perched on a stand near his bed.
"Dude, is that a mechanical parrot? When did you get that?" Kaminari asked as he approached the sleek-looking black, white and golden robotic bird, but sadly for him, it didn't move till he got close, at which point it let out a high-pitched whistle, scaring the hell outta him as it flew over to Midoriya, landing on his lap where he pats the robot's artificial feathery head.
"…I built it, I named him Haro…"
"What, doesn't this mean they're judging our rooms as well?" Sato asked.
"That's what they said, dumbass." Bakugo wished he was in bed, and not dealing with this crap but Kirishima had already dragged him this far. After that, the group toured some other rooms. They found that Tokoyami's room was just as edgy and dark as they expected from him, though he took great offence to Kirishima noting he wanted a room just like it back in middle school. Aoyama's fashion sense was glamour, brightness and mirrors, an exact opposite of Tokoyami's as you would think he was trying to harvest holy light.
The class collectively avoided Mineta's room, they were sure that UA wouldn't have allowed him to have anything too risky, but none of the girls wanted to be inside, and none of the boys wanted to touch anything that might not have been properly disinfected. In contrast to whatever they would have found in Mineta's room, Ojiro's room was lacking in any style, to the point that they wondered if he moved anything in or if he just altered the base design a little. Iida's room looked the most mature out of the rooms, looking like he was a single well-mannered office worker in his mid-30s.
He kept a large bookcase filled with study material, spare books and tons of spare glasses for as he stated 'whenever he broke his glasses as he expected to while they trained and worked in the field' which just had them wondering why he didn't just get corrective eye surgery, or contact lenses. Kaminari's room certainly had more style to it, but that was part of the issue as he had too much style to it. the room suited his personality as it didn't seem like he could decide one 1 or 2 things and rather took 8 of the coolest ones he saw, to the point Jiro's on it looks like a store fit it quite well. Koda's room was an early front runner as while he decorated it in soft colours and plush animals, the girls were won over by the live rabbit he kept in there, which just made Midoriya feel bad as his robotic sea eagle was way better than a rabbit-it was super cute, smart and you didn't need to worry about cleaning up after it!
All this left the boys feeling depressed by it all, with the ones with the rooms judged to be the most boring sitting in a corner. "Man, this sucks. I feel so judged right now." Kaminari looked as angry as one would expect, he knew he wasn't the smartest guy in class but he liked to think he was the trendiest, and his room reflected that! Yeah, some of it was older stuff, but was he supposed to just throw it away?
"Join the club, I don't feel like sunshine either." Never had Ojiro felt like his lifestyle was as unpopular a choice as he did now.
"That's because the boys are the only ones getting picked on." Mineta stalked up to the group, having the most reason to hate the results considering they didn't even WANT to see his room and just gave him the automatic last place! "They said it was a contest to judge who has the best room, but what about them? We have to see the girls' room to tell who has the best, and yet they haven't done that!" He pointed towards the girls, who stopped their conversation.
"You know what I think? I think they just wanted to make fun of our decorating skills!" Mineta accused, his fury evident while some of the boys agreed with him, if this was a contest that the girls suggested, they should have even been the first to display their rooms!
"I'm into it!" Mina clapped her hands together, dispelling the aura of discontent brewing among the boys, but also catching Jiro off guard.
"What?"
"What are the rules? Are we just figuring out who has the best taste in the class, or who has the overall coolest?" Mina pushed on ahead, trying to get info on how they were deciding this.
"When did I agree to this?" Jiro asked again but was again ignored by the group.
"This isn't needed to be a contest, different people-different strokes." Shoji offered, but they didn't seem to care. At the very least, it didn't seem like anyone was getting hyper-competitive so hurt feelings wouldn't be much of a thing come morning.
"But didn't this start as one? It's not like it needs to be high stakes." Ojiro offered as the girls agreed to that.
"Yeah, it'll just be seeing whose room is better, not like we'll give you crap for it." Hagakure nodded her head, something they knew by the fact her hoodie was moving in that fashion.
"I'm out." Bakugo turned to leave as Kirishima tried to stop him.
"Come on, Bakgubro, it'll be fun!" He put a hand on his shoulder, but Bakugo shook him off as he continued to walk towards the elevator.
"Like hell, I'll be letting you extras into my room!"
"Are you afraid they won't like it?" Todoroki's question got him to stop as Kaminari hid before Sato, the group wondering where Todoroki got the urge to poke their resistant volcano of vulgarity and explosions.
"What was that, Icyhot?" Bakugo turned his head towards Todoroki, his red eyes filled with rage and a dare for him to repeat his question. Todoroki, being the only one not to realize what he had done, pressed on like normal with the same confidence as a man unknowingly walking over paper-thin ice.
"It's an honest question. We all have our flaws, maybe your decorating skills aren't that good. Nothing to be ashamed of." Todoroki scratched his head.
"I don't know what's worse, the fact he said that, or the fact he doesn't mean it to be insulting," Uraraka noted to which Asui and Mina nodded their heads.
"My decorating skills are top-notch, IcyHot! I'll show you!" Bakugo pointed towards him before he yelled for them to follow, seeing that they wouldn't get a chance like this again, they obliged and went after him.
"Here it is!" Bakugo told them as he opened his door with his usual level of tact, which meant nothing. But they looked past that and inside the room and they had to admit, it was a surprise as his room had some All Might stuff in the corner, sure, but more than that it was filled with pleasing colours, a small recliner, a sleek study desk and chair, the place looked like if you took the best aspects of Aoyama's and Kaminari's room and put them together, leading to a bright but stylish set-up.
"Wow, I wasn't expecting this from him! It looks like a magazine cover in here!" Mina laughed as she had only seen such placement whenever she went to the store, but Bakugo didn't just copy that as it was if he adjusted that to suit the place even more.
"What's that supposed to mean, Raccoon eyes!" Bakugo yelled at her, taking a seat at his desk. At this, the group looked at him for an answer, but he only glared right back at them while giving them the middle finger. So they turned to Midoriya for answers as he had known him the longest.
"…Parents are involved with fashion…"
"Oh, that explains it!" Kaminari noted.
"Now you've seen it, so get out!" Bakugo told them now that they're seen his superior skills.
"But I wan to-!"
"Out!"
"It's a shame I was busy before this, else we could have saved Wilson the time."
"You got it?"
"That I did, as well other things, such as confirmation of whose the next holder of One for All."
"Should I dispose of him now?"
"No, I think that the doctor would much prefer if we keep him around, after-all, what are the odds of running into someone who's quirkless yet so young."
"No…No!"
"Help me!"
"If only you had a quirk, you might have been a challenge."
"Useless!"
"Weakling!"
"Get outta here!"
"A hero, get real!"
"Don't worry, I can make you strong, just surrender and it will all be over."
"No!" Midoriya woke up, sweaty, breathing at a mile a minute and close to throwing up his dinner. Remembering that his mother told him, he tried to calm himself with a mantra to bring him some semblance of peace as his heart raced so fast it felt like it was going to come flying out of his chest. "I'm safe. She's safe. Think of mom…think of dad…think of Yu." "Think of mom…think of dad…think of Yu." He went on for a while, he didn't know. All he did know was that once he was calm enough, he wiped away his fear-provoked tears and looked at the clock, seeing that it was 4:49 am, almost 2 hours before they needed to wake up to get ready for class.
"I should have seen Hound dog before I went to bed…" He said to himself, removing himself from his bed and slowly getting himself into his wheelchair. Not even bothering to change out of his sleep clothes, he left his room and made his way for the elevator. Soon enough he was in the kitchen, the lights being the only ones on in the entire building as the rest of his classmates slept. Of course, while he wanted to make himself a cup of coffee for what felt like a long day ahead, he ran into a problem in the form of the fact the coffee beans were kept on a tall shelf, far out of his reach.
"Why did they put all of them in the cupboards?" He muttered to himself, only for another hand to reach up, pick up the bag he wanted and place it in his hand.
"We'll place some in the lower cabinets in the morning." Jiro, also in her sleepwear told him as she went about getting her own early morning breakfast supplies.
"Jiro…?" Midoriya asked, wondering when did she get there, and why she was awake.
"She's not the only one," The two turned to see Tokoyami entering the kitchen area, yawning into his hand as he did so. "I heard you wake up, wished to check on you." He picked up one of the apples and washed it in the sink before taking a bite. At his unspoken question, Jiro tried to act natural and shrug, but both could tell she was having her issues at the moment.
"Couldn't sleep. Decided to have an early breakfast." She replied, turning her gaze towards Midoriya who could make out, like with Tokoyami, there was no pressure to speak here. If he wished to keep it himself, there would be no judgement.
"…Bad dreams…" After that, the three sat in silence, Tokoyami eating his apple, Midoriya with his freshly brewed cup of coffee, and Jiro with some toast and eggs. After a little bit before Jiro placed her fork down, suddenly not as hungry as she was when she came in.
"Ojiro talked, you know." Her words grabbed the other two's attention, though neither knew what she was talking about.
"Pardon?" Tokoyami asked, placing the apple core in a tissue to toss it when it left.
"He…after what happened with the camp, we was all on edge, you know? Villains just knowing where we were, us only walking away with our lives because they didn't feel like killing most of us." Jiro rubbed her arms there as if trying to warm herself from the chilling notion that their summer camp could have been a massacre, with that gas knocking out most of them, the flames and the nomu-it wouldn't have been hard for the villains to have ensured man of them left in body-bags.
"Yes, it was… a stressful time." Tokoyami looked away there, as while he had gotten out with a few scratches and bruises, he couldn't help but look back on it with shame.
"No shit." She stated, looking down as she recalled what she had overheard. "Ojiro…he was scared, and Hagakure was trying to calm him down and I overheard him say something."
"…Traitor…?" Midoriya asked her, suspecting that he knew what this was all about.
"Yeah."
"Traitor?" At Tokoyami's confused face, the two gave him a quick explanation of the situation, which drained him of his strength as he leaned more into his seat. "What a tragedy. You suspected something like this as far back as the USJ?"
"And now…I can't help but wonder if one of us sold out the rest. It's kinda hard to sleep when you can't be sure one of your friends isn't gonna slit your throat in your sleep." Jiro laughed, at the insanity of the situation catching up with her as she could picture it now, some shadowy figure over as she slept, the kitchen knife in hand. Or maybe it'll be in training, made to look like an accident?
"Jiro."
"I have super hearing, I should have noticed something was off, right? I overhear conversations all the time! I've gotten used to hearing people say embarrassing shit under their breath, hearing secrets they wouldn't want to get out but apparently, I was deaf to a traitor in our class!" She went on, growing in intensity and emotions.
"Jiro!"
"And now we're all under the same damn roof? Sure, it's to keep the villains out but what about the villain who's already inside? All they did is lock us in with them!"
"Kyoka!" She was knocked out of her over-deepening hole when Tokoyami grabbed her shoulder and shook her back to her senses. "Please, take a breather, calm herself down." She looked directly into his eyes, seeing his concern burning bright as even Midoriya has wheeled himself closer to take her hand.
"…Sorry about that." She looked away, but neither made anything of it as this conversation was proving to be an emotionally taxing one.
"There is no need for apologies. It's perfectly reasonable for such thoughts to weigh on you. Such an idea…it's a bitter truth to swallow." He replied as if he had overheard such, he would have been a bundle of nerves himself. He wouldn't even be sure he could have trusted his classmates with his plan to save Midoriya as bar Shinso, all would be suspects.
"…Trust our friends…We need to stand by them…right?" Midoriya added his thoughts to it, as he had been dealing with as well, even longer than Jiro but he tried his best to give his classmates the benefit of the doubt, which he could admit in the privacy of his mind, may be part of the problem as he had been watching them whenever he could, and he hadn't seen a single suspicion thing from any of them. The closest was Yaomomo and Bakugo, which he immediately disregarded as the idea of those two would be league spies was just insane, and more likely came about due to him trying to fit pieces into places they didn't belong, or overreading something.
"He's correct. If we let suspicion and paranoia take us, we'll fall apart faster than a deck of cards on a windy day." Tokoyami, not knowing of these thoughts, agreed with his friend as while he would be distressed by this, he couldn't let that get in the way of their studies, or their bonds.
There was a little more, but I can't do it since I'm hungry as hell and need to go eat something.
