Title: We're inevitable
Reviews:
tomdarryecs: Sam is just trying to be a good friend but we get it lol. We think you will like this chapter much better ;)
onyx115: we are so sorry we had to end it there, but it was fun right? Lol. We hope this one leaves you satisfied. ;)
Iris7124: We love a good bro moment lol. And we definitely relate to the needing to just cry on someone's shoulder for a while too. Cannot recommend Schitt's creek enough! Both of us have never related to a character more than Stevie and David for sure! That show will make you laugh and sob like a baby but it's also so heartwarming it's ridiculous. Definitely one of our comfort shows along with Glee! Thank you and glad you liked it!
Guest: thank you very much! We are so glad you liked it so far! We think you will really like this chapter!
Picking up where we left off…
"So you were uncomfortable?" He finally met Blaine's eyes, his searching for something.
Blaine swallowed against his suddenly dry throat. "I… yes."
"I think we need to talk about why that is," Kurt replied, determination in his eyes.
Blaine sputtered. "Well, uh… the reason? I was uncomfortable? I mean… it's you and me… us…"
Kurt raised his eyebrows in encouragement for him to go on. He wanted Blaine to explain his feelings and then he would explain his own.
However, with the way his best friend was freaking out, he wasn't sure he would get that. But he needed to know Blaine wasn't uncomfortable with him before he opened himself up. If he was weirded out because of Kurt's former… well, not so former crush, then he wasn't sure what he would do.
"I'm just… Okay, I didn't want you to feel uncomfortable having to do a romantic scene with me. Because you used to have feelings for me." His voice was high and squeaky.
"But that wouldn't bother you?" Kurt's face gave nothing away.
"No! Of course not! A scene like that where we…" He swallowed. "Declare our love for one another. It would be fine! Amazing! A dream come true! But like, no big deal."
Kurt's heart sank. "It would be weird for you, wouldn't it?"
"What?" Blaine's brows furrowed. "No! Why would it be weird?"
"Because." Kurt picked at his nails. "I told you I liked you before and I thought it might bother you having to do something like that. With me."
Blaine laughed loudly, causing Kurt to look up sharply.
"What's so funny?"
"I just… The fact that you think I'd be freaked out by that." He picked at lint on his shirt.
Although he was a little irritated at Blaine for laughing, he relaxed. "So you're okay? With Cooper?"
Blaine scratched his head tiredly. "Not one hundred percent, but we are getting there. He's… the way he is. I'm trying to not get so jealous of him."
"Good." Kurt fidgeted nervously. He was seriously considering delving deeper into this conversation when sounds started coming from the kitchen. The cooks had begun preparing dinner. The conversation would have to wait. "Let's go get cleaned up."
They left together, Kurt with every intention of talking to Blaine about his newly discovered feelings. Well, the feelings that never went away more like it. He kept trying to find a good time to tell him, but things kept getting in the way along with the fact that he was newly broken up with Kent. It would probably hurt his feelings if he and Blaine were to suddenly date. Who was he kidding? Blaine didn't like him that way. But he reasoned that he should still wait a week like Kent had asked…
"You're still in love with him, huh?" Kent asked softly, a pained grimace on his face. "Blaine? I guess that's a stupid question…"
They sat together in Kent's cabin after Blaine told him to go away. There were so many things Kurt wanted to say; deny it, console him, tell him the truth. But he just said nothing.
Kent sucked in a deep breath and let it go as he brushed both hands through his hair. "I… I remember you telling me you had feelings for him and I thought they were gone…"
"They were!" Kurt exclaimed, his voice croaky from crying. But it felt like a lie. "I wanted them to be…"
Kent nodded grimly, lips pursed. "You… It was when you did your duet. That practice."
"What?"
Kent smiled sadly at him, eyes a little misty. "When you and Blaine sang and danced together that first audition practice… I knew then. That you were still in love with him."
That made Kurt feel like absolute shit. Poor Kent had seen it coming even when he was still in denial. It made a lot of sense now how Kent had kept trying to pull him closer. He had realized it was a losing battle, but hadn't given up on him. Yeah, Kurt was the absolute worst.
"I don't want to be in love with him. I want to fall in love with you." He hoped Kent believed him. He had truly gone into this with the best intentions. "When you and I started dating, I genuinely thought I was over him. You're just so kind and sweet and I never want to hurt you… but I have. I see that now. I'm so sorry. You deserve someone who won't hurt you. If you want to hate me, I get it. I kind of hate me."
"I don't," Kent said, drawing Kurt's eyes to meet his. "I really do like you and I believe you. I can't say I'm not hurt because I am. I have liked you for awhile. But… no, I don't hate you. How could I?"
Fresh tears filled Kurt's eyes. "You're too nice."
"Well, you know what they say, no pain no gain." Kent smiled ever so slightly.
"I don't thinks that what that means… You know what? Never mind." Kurt was a little surprised when Kent went in for a hug, but he accepted it. Even though he knew he wasn't in love with Kent, Kurt still felt the loss of him like an empty place in his heart. He only wished Kent happiness. He told him so. "And I hope you know that me breaking up with you wasn't your fault. You have been nothing but the perfect boyfriend."
Kent shrugged shyly. "Thanks. I appreciate it. The only thing I ask is can we keep this quiet? I'm feeling okay now, but if anyone asks about us breaking up, I might cry. And you know I don't like to cry. My nostrils get big."
Kurt couldn't help but laugh. "Your nostrils do not get big, but I won't say anything."
Kent had asked for some space after that which of course Kurt gave him. He would do anything to make things up to him for breaking his heart. So far, no one had been the wiser, especially since everyone was pretty focused on the musical. But it wouldn't last. It would come out eventually. He just hoped Kent would be okay. Maybe they could even be friends.
So, the rest of the week passed with everyone working their asses off and Kurt casting longing glances at Blaine when he wasn't looking. He felt pathetic. It was as if he had been transported back into the previous year and he was hopelessly in love with his best friend again. Fucking fantastic.
Week four - Dance: Musical theater movement and characterization
The next week loomed and saw all the campers working furiously on their roles. They were in charge of everything from the set to the costumes and they had fallen behind on learning their lines because of Sue and Will's indecision. But they worked hard, even as they got to Dance Week. It was harder for some than others, but this year their instructor was very strict so that even the ones as talented as Brittany struggled. The mood was tense amongst everyone, especially with all the other personal drama coming into play.
"Your footwork is sloppy and you screwed up three of your turns!" The instructor screamed at Brittany. "Do it again, but right this time!"
Kurt was glad she was used to being yelled at by Coach Sylvester so it didn't seem to hurt her feelings. The same couldn't be said for the girl before her who ran out crying. He stood off to the side with the others doing their warmup stretches.
"If Brittany can't get the choreography, the rest of us are doomed."
Santana glowered at the instructor who was still criticizing her girlfriend. "She was fine. This bitch is probably just jealous that Brittany's a better dancer than she will ever be."
Kurt smiled at her loyalty. "Honestly, there's not that many dance scenes anyway and the big one everyone is all together so as long as we can be synchronized, we should be fine."
Since he and Blaine were switching off on the role, they would be filling in as an extra if needed so they were learning the background roles as well.
Santana was about to reply when the instructor tapped her cane against the floor. "Stretching doesn't require talking!" She looked down her nose at both Kurt and Santana.
Kurt just went back to stretching but Santana gave her a dirty look and grumbled something about Lima Heights Adjacent under her breath. "You better watch your man," she whispered and jerked her chin towards where Kent was stretching next to Trent.
They were laughing together about something as Kent helped Trent with his stretches. Kurt had a sneaking suspicion that Trent knew how to do them just fine, but didn't turn down Kent's help. They still hadn't announced their breakup. Kent had been kind of mopey, but he seemed okay. Kurt was letting Kent call the shots as to when they let everyone know they had broken up. And he was jealous, but not for the reasons Santana thought he should be. He wished nothing but happiness for Kent, and if that happened to be Trent, so be it. No, he was jealous because they got to flirt with whoever they wanted. They could just go out on a date. They weren't doomed to be stuck on someone who would never love them back forever. They didn't face the complications he did.
Speaking of, his biggest complication came trotting up. "Guys, can someone help me do a butterfly? I was going to ask Sam, but he's stretching with Christy." Blaine plopped down to the floor in front of them.
Santana smirked. "Why don't you help him out, Kurt? Make that boy toy of yours jealous." She winked and sashayed away.
Blaine seemed to not have heard her as he folded his legs in the floor and started bending forward over them.
"Fuck," Kurt cursed under his breath before sinking to the floor in front of him. Blaine sat up and Kurt mirrored him as they joined arms. He had kind of been avoiding Blaine, not completely of course, but just enough to ease the ache in his chest. Blaine didn't seem to mind. He had been better since Cooper left, but still pretty quiet.
"Hey, check it out." Blaine pointedly flicked his eyes to the side and Kurt glanced over to see what he was talking about. Rachel and Quinn were stretching together at the barre and trading flirty smiles. "You think they are together?"
Kurt shrugged and pulled Blaine back by his arms. "I don't know. Maybe it's not our business."
Blaine looked at him then. "You okay?"
"Yeah. I guess it's just starting to feel like we are invading their privacy, you know?"
Blaine considered this. "Yeah, maybe. It was fun though." He smiled softly at Kurt and stretched back.
"It was."
They continued in silence for a minute.
"You want to sneak out again tonight and go to our spot?" Kurt asked.
"Oh definitely," Blaine replied.
The instructor barked out Blaine's name and he stood. "Well, guess it's my turn to be verbally berated. Wish me luck." He helped Kurt stand which made butterflies swoop through his stomach for some reason.
"You'll do great," Kurt replied. "You don't need luck because you have talent."
Blaine grinned and jogged off to take his place. Kurt sighed involuntarily at the way it made his whole body thrill with want. They definitely needed a distraction.
Uh oh.
It was close to midnight when they felt safe enough to sneak out of their cabin. They were both exhausted from the intense dancing session and another one of Sue's workouts. Making sure Sam and Artie were definitely asleep, they wordlessly stepped out into the night.
"It's nice tonight," Kurt said as they ambled along the path towards where their spot was.
Humming in agreement, Blaine really had to fight the urge to grab Kurt's hand. Stuff like that was getting harder lately. He wasn't sure if it was because their time together was limited to all the musical stuff or camp activities and he somehow missed Kurt even though he saw him every day. Or maybe it was because Kurt and Kent didn't seem to be giving each other much attention lately. Whatever the reason, Blaine felt like he was constantly on edge.
"How are things with Cooper? You seem to be feeling better about the whole situation." Kurt plucked a leaf from a bush and rolled it between his fingers.
"Honestly, it's a lot better. We still aren't all the way there, but things are looking up. He seems really determined to be different. I think I just need a little space for awhile."
Kurt nodded. "I get that. I was kind of glad Finn decided not to come. We are going to take a family trip right after camp before school starts again, so I knew I would need a little time away. Nothing wrong with some space."
"Yeah." Blaine bent to pick a flower that grew next to the path and sniffed it. It smelled sweet and light. "I do love Cooper and we came to more understanding of each other, but I still need camp to be my thing. Growing up it was like I couldn't get away from him. There have even people who said they wanted to be my friend so they could get close to him."
Kurt frowned. "Well that's shitty. I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault." Blaine shrugged and handed Kurt the flower.
He smiled a bit shyly and took it, sniffing it delicately. "Still. You don't deserve that."
They walked without speaking for a few minutes as they crested the hill where the turn off to the spot was. Blaine was honestly just enjoying the peace and spending this moment with Kurt. They could have those comfortable silences that didn't even need words and not feel pressured to fill it. He started to go down the path when Kurt grabbed his hand and pulled him into the bushes.
"Look!"
Rachel was sneaking down the path clutching some folder. She was headed back towards the girl cabins.
Kurt narrowed his eyes. "What's she doing?"
Blaine sighed. "There's so many secrets around here I wouldn't really be surprised anymore."
"She looks like she's coming from the auditorium." Kurt tugging at Blaine's arm. "You think she stole something? Like what if she stole the scripts so only she looks good on stage?"
"You seriously think she would do that?"
"She's been waiting to exact her revenge ever since we burned her socks!" Kurt pulled him towards where she disappeared to. "Let's follow her!"
Blaine had a bad feeling about this, but he would follow Kurt anywhere. Plus, she had been pretty pissed about the socks.
He should have listened to his gut.
They followed Rachel to Quinn's cabin where she waited outside until the blonde joined her. She was wearing jeans and a T-shirt instead of pajamas, like they had been planning this. Quinn kissed her cheek as she joined her.
"Let's go walk by the lake," Rachel said, tugging her towards the water.
"Brittany and Santana are off somewhere," Quinn replied. "You can come in if you want?"
Rachel shook her head. "I want to walk."
They walked off together, down towards the lake.
Kurt started to follow, but Blaine held him back. "Don't you think we should just leave them alone?"
"I don't care about them, I want to know what Rachel is hiding!" Kurt insisted.
"Kurt, I'm sure it's nothing." They stepped out of the bushes together, right in front of Quinn's cabin.
A mischievous glint in his eyes, Kurt opened the cabin door. "Ohhh, look! It's open!"
"Kurt," Blaine said nervously.
"I'm gonna go in!"
"Seriously, knock it off!" Blaine looked all around, afraid someone might see them.
Kurt chuckled and closed the door. "I'm just joking. Let's go to the swing and just relax."
"I just want my sweater!" They heard Quinn say.
"It's not even cold!" Rachel teased.
"Yes it is!"
Kurt and Blaine scrambled to hide, gabbing each other's arms and eyes wide with panic. Blaine pushed him into the cabin.
"What are we gonna do now?" Kurt hissed.
"Hide!" Blaine hissed back. "Under the bunks?"
Kurt shook his head. "Not enough room! Remember flashlight tag last summer?"
"The closet?"
Kurt grabbed him and pushed him into the tiny closet before jumping in himself. They had just wedged themselves in and slid the door closed when they heard the cabin door open and close followed by the girl's footsteps.
"Hang on. It's in the closet."
Kurt and Blaine pinched their eyes shut and waited to be discovered, but nothing happened.
"Unless you want to just stay in here?"
"But what if Santana and Brittany come back?" Rachel's voice was squeaky with nerves. "They'll want to know what we are doing in here."
"Yeah, they already know I like you. I kind of broke down to them the other day."
"Oh. Sorry."
"For?" Quinn replied.
"For hurting your feelings."
The bunk squeaked, indicating they were sitting down.
"Which time?"
"All of them," Rachel grumbled. "But you hurt my feelings too."
"Well, I thought you thought I was trying to sabotage you or something."
"To be fair, everyone wants to sabotage me. Especially Kurt since he's so jealous I got Christine."
Kurt rolled his eyes at how paranoid she was. Blaine stifled a giggle. Things were not comfortable in the tiny closet. They had nestled into the corners with their legs bent and tangled together. This wasn't their best idea, but they were in there now. Blaine did feel slightly guilty for unwillingly eavesdropping on their private conversation, but it would be hard to explain things now.
"I need to confess something," Quinn said after a few moments of silence.
"What?" Rachel asked warily.
"It was my idea to bring Sue here."
"What?" A scuffle sounded as Rachel must have jumped up. "How could you? She's nearly ruined my life!"
"You mean your transcript?" Quinn replied dryly.
"Same thing!" Rachel shrieked. "Why would you do that? Did you hate me that much?"
"The opposite," Quinn replied softly. "You know it's the opposite. Sit back down. Let me explain. Okay, maybe part of it was because I wanted to irritate you. Get you to at least look at me, but mostly because if I came here I could at least try to talk to you."
Kurt and Blaine mouthed, awwww together silently.
"That's… Wow…"
Things got quiet again which confused Blaine until he realized they were kissing. Now he was really anxious to get out of there.
WE HAVE TO GO!!! -Blaine
Kurt read the text he typed out and started to type one of his own.
I know but how??? Kent just texted me. Apparently Artie and Sam woke up and found us missing and the three of them are looking for us -Kurt
Blaine ground the heels of his palms into his eyes. What a mess. Now Kent would want to know why Blaine and his boyfriend were sneaking around together at night. He was nice, but everyone had limits. Maybe he could run faster than Kent… But they had to get out of there. Not only did this feel wrong, he couldn't take being this close to Kurt any longer. Blaine took his phone.
We'll wait until they fall asleep and then sneak out. I'll take the heat for you with Kent. We'll say it was my idea -Blaine
Kurt read it and shook his head before typing a response.
Don't worry about Kent. We'll take the blame together. It's time anyway -Kurt
Blaine really wanted to ask what that meant, but it was probably too much for text. Kurt was already putting his phone away anyway and they heard Quinn talking.
"Let's take a little nap and we can talk more tomorrow? Santana and Brittany will be back soon, but they won't tell."
Rachel agreed and soon little soft snores could heard. Kurt pressed his ear to the door even though that meant his chest was nearly in Blaine's face. He sat on his own hands so he didn't touch.
"Come on," Kurt whispered lowly. He peeked out. "They're asleep."
Kurt slowly pushed the door open and crawled out as quietly as he could. Blaine followed, swallowing the grunt as he unfolded his legs from where they had been cramped into a pretzel. They saw the girls curled up together with eyes closed and quietly crawled towards the door. It was Kurt's misfortune that he put his hand on a squeaky board right at the same moment that Rachel turned in her sleep and opened her eyes slightly. Blaine was sure that in the dark they looked rather creepy crawling out of the closet across the floor. It was dark and they were probably unidentifiable, so it wasn't a surprise that Rachel screamed. Then Quinn started screaming which made Kurt and Blaine start screaming until everyone was just screaming at each other.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" Rachel screamed.
Hearing the commotion, Santana and Brittany burst through the door as they apparently had returned from whatever they were doing. Since their hair was wet and they carried towels, Blaine guessed they had been at the lake.
"What's going on?" Santana took one look at the girls and boys in front of her and frowned. "Are you having a party without us?"
"Let's play Twister!" Brittany said, clapping her hands in excitement.
"Okay, I can explain everything," Kurt said as he stood from the floor. He helped Blaine up as well.
"You can explain why you were in my closet? Spying?" Quinn yelled, hand clapped to her chest.
"Spies!" Rachel yelled.
"We weren't spying!" Blaine defended. "This time…"
"I knew you were trying to sabotage me!" Rachel shouted as she pointed an accusing finger at Kurt. "You knew you could scare me so that I'd scream and lose my voice, giving you the lead! Well, nice try! It didn't work!"
Kurt threw his head back. "Do you realize how insane you sound?"
"There you guys are!" Sam exclaimed as he came in behind Santana and Brittany. He was soon followed by Artie and Kent. They all looked tired and slightly annoyed. "We've been looking everywhere for you! Why is everyone screaming?"
"I texted you back," Kurt said, looking at Kent.
His boyfriend shrugged. "They said we should try to catch you."
"Catch us doing what?" Kurt folded his arms and glared at his bunk mates. "Well?"
Artie and Sam found the walls and floor very interesting. "Um…"
"Kurt, let's just drop it," Blaine tried.
"No, I want them to admit it!"
The door swung open and Trent peeped in. "What's everyone doing? Are we having another party?"
"Oh for the love—" Rachel threw up her hands.
That drew Sam, Kent, and Artie's attention. Blaine could see the wheels turning in their brain. It would only be a matter of time before they started asking why Rachel was there. Then they would be outed and it would be all their fault, even if it was an accident. He couldn't have that. But he also sucked at lying. He would have to tell the truth, or something like it.
"Why the hell are you here?" Santana asked Trent with furrowed brows.
"I heard these guys outside and thought I'd see what's up," Trent said with a grin.
"I was trying to seduce Kurt!" Blaine blurted.
No one spoke. Everyone turned to slowly stare at him. Lava might as well have replaced his blood at this point.
Kurt's mouth fell open. "What are you—"
"I just told Kurt I wanted to go on a walk tonight and go to our spot so I could confess my undying love for him like I've wanted to do since the beginning of the camp. Well, I think I've been in love with you for a lot longer than that, but I was too scared and you had Kent—" he looked to Kurt's boyfriend who was staring at the floor sadly with his arms wrapped around himself. "Kent, I'm sorry. I tried. I really was listening to what you were saying about Kurt that day. He hasn't done anything. He's been loyal."
Kurt's stunned face turned to Kent. "What? What conversation?"
Kent just shrugged and wiped at his eye.
Blaine couldn't stop once he started. "It's all my fault. Tonight I was trying to tell Kurt my feelings and we thought we heard Mr. Schue. So we jumped in here and scared Quinn. Rachel must have heard and come running. And then the rest of you."
"Blaine?"
At Kurt's small voice, Blaine looked up. He was staring at him in shock. Blaine swallowed. "I love you, Kurt. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before, but I do."
"Are you… You're lying!" Tears filled Kurt's eyes and he was breathing heavy. "How could you say that when you know I…" He swiped his eyes angrily.
It was like a stab to his heart to upset Kurt like that. To make him think he was using his feelings to lie. But he wasn't lying about this. He let all his feelings and honesty show on his face. "I'm not lying. Not about this. I'm in love with you." It was a great relief and nausea-inducing all at once. Kurt deserved to be told this surrounded by flowers and candles or sweetly over coffee. Not like this. But it was too late now.
"Blaine, we talked about this…" Sam started.
"You knew?" Kurt wheeled on him. Sam looked away and a lot of other people in the room shifted rather uncomfortably. "You all knew?"
"I didn't!" Rachel said. "But I've been busy learning lines."
"I figured it out the first day of camp," Santana said with a shrug. "Then I told Brittany."
"Second day," Quinn murmured.
"Okay, wait." Kurt pinched the bridge of his nose. He dropped his hands and searched Blaine's eyes. "You— Seriously? You… love me?"
Blaine nodded. His heart was galloping a million miles an hour, but his mouth was like a river with the dam removed. "I do. I just didn't want to be that asshole who tried to get in between you and Kent."
At his boyfriend's name, Kurt's eyes went wide and he turned.
Kent was scratching the back of his head. "Well, this is uncomfy. Not my favorite move, bro." He said to Blaine. "It's actually kind of the worst timing." His face crumpled as he started crying and covered his nose with his big palms. "No one look at my nostrils!"
"Oh my god, Kent I'm so sorry!" It felt like he had stolen a child's ice cream cone. Everyone glared at him.
"Wow, dick move."
"This man has a heart of pure gold!"
"Shame on you!"
Trent patted Kent's arm. "There, there."
Kent immediately grabbed Trent in a bear hug and held him to his chest.
"Well this is a giant mess," Artie said as they watched the guy sob.
Blaine wanted to apologize to Kent, to Kurt, to everyone, but he didn't get the chance. All eyes in the room were staring daggers at him besides Kent who was crying and Trent who was comforting Kent. And Kurt. Kurt looked like he could be pushed over with a finger.
"What are you all doing awake and out of your cabins?" Mr. Shue asked from the doorway. He shone a flashlight into the cabin at the startled teens. "Why is Kent crying? And why does Kurt look like he's going to throw up?"
"We are in our cabin," Santana said with a sly grin. "We can't be in trouble for that."
"Yeah, you didn't catch us skinny dipping earlier," Brittany said triumphantly.
Santana smacked her forehead.
Brittany's smile fell. "Oops."
"Yeah, oops." Mr. Shue pointed towards the door. "Everyone to the office now."
"Kent, I'm so sorry."
Kurt looked up at his ex who had finally stopped crying. They were waiting for their turn in the office. Mr. Shue was making them all come in for a talking-to and calling their parents. He didn't understand why they couldn't just go to bed and do all this in the morning, but whatever. He didn't understand half of what Mr. Shue did. "I had no idea he… Are you okay?"
Kent nodded. "Actually, I think I am. I'm still a little sad, but I needed to get that out. And everyone knowing now helps too." He smiled sadly at Kurt. "Sorry you had to find out about your bestie that way."
His stomach swooped at the memory of Blaine's hazel eyes boring into him and saying all the things he dared only dream about. But that could wait until later when they had all slept and he could talk to Blaine alone. His heart beat a little faster at the thought.
"Don't worry about me. I'm sorry we got everyone in trouble."
"Well, we got out of bed. I mean, we can't get in too much trouble right?" Kent laughed softly. "Most of us are leads. Like, what are they going to do? Recast us?"
"Yeah, Kent. That's probably exactly what they will do."
Kent's laughter died in his throat. "Oh. Well crap."
"Yeah…" Kurt cleared his throat. "Anyway, I don't want you to think I'm not here for you just because we aren't dating. If that's weird for you though, I get it."
Kent slipped his hands into the mesh pockets of his basketball shorts. "That's nice of you. I think I'd like to be friends eventually, but I'm just not there yet. But hey, maybe soon!"
Kurt smiled softly. "Of course. Whatever you need."
"You gonna go talk to Blaine?"
Kurt chewed his lip. "I didn't think you'd want to hear about that."
"Please." Kent tilted his head. "You guys are definitely meant to be together. I never stood a chance."
"Kent…"
"Seriously, it's okay. I uh, I kind of think Trent is cute." He blushed a little. "I'm not there yet obviously, but it's a good thought."
Kurt nudged him with his elbow. "He is cute and he's nice. You should go for it."
"You think?" Kent seemed skeptical.
"He definitely likes you," Kurt said after giving him a chiding look. "When you're ready, give him a chance."
"I might. Maybe this will be the one. Or maybe I'll just focus on me? Who knows!"
"Do whatever you want. You will be graduating soon, so maybe you will go off to college and find someone there."
"Who knows. I mean, there's more than one way to skin a knee, am I right?"
"I… That…" Kurt shrugged, resigned. "Yeah, Kent. Yeah there is."
They shared a slightly awkward silence for a few moments before Kent shrugged. "Goodbye hug?"
Kurt laughed softly. "You know we aren't saying goodbye yet? Like, we have a few more weeks of camp."
"I know, but this is a goodbye Mummel hug!" Kent said it so sweetly that Kurt actually teared up a bit. He went in for a hug.
"Oh, well in that case, goodbye. Never change, Kent."
Blaine watched the clock tick the minutes by up on the wall. He was seated in the office along with most of his other friends. Mr. Shue had Trent in the office while Kurt and Kent were talking outside. Blaine couldn't hear them, but they were smiling and talking. Blaine tried not to watch. They were obviously going to be fine. Kurt hated him, along with everyone else.
Rachel and Quinn hadn't even spoken to him and his other friends glowered at him for not only getting them in trouble, but also for trying to break up Kurt and Kent. And he deserved it. He was the worst. A fat tear dropped down his face and plopped on his hand. Sure, he had kept anyone from figuring out about Quinn and Rachel, but Kurt was probably never going to speak him again. Blaine put his head in his hands. He had finally done it, said his feelings to Kurt and it didn't matter. He was so fucking stupid.
"Hey."
Blaine looked up at the voice and wiped his face. Quinn motioned for him to move over and make room for her on the bench, which he did.
"I'm not going to pretend that I'm not annoyed about this whole situation, because I am."
"Quinn, I'm really sorry—"
She held up a hand and he stopped talking.
"But," she continued as if he hadn't spoken in that quiet voice of hers. "I do appreciate what you did. Whatever is happening with us…" She glanced up at Rachel quickly. The brunette had taken the time to work on her lines and wasn't paying attention. "We aren't really even sure anything is going to happen. So thank you." Her expression hardened. "Now are you going to explain why you two were in my closet?"
Blaine tried to smile but wasn't sure how successful he was. "It was an accident actually, but Kurt and I kind of found out about the two of you while we were… uh spying. Sorry."
Quinn raised an eyebrow, but let him go on.
"At first we just wanted to figure out why you guys were fighting, but then we… realized and we kind of stopped then because it didn't feel right. We've not told anyone, believe me." He hoped she did. He hadn't ever exactly been outed, but he had experienced fear when he shared about himself before.
The way her shoulders relaxed and the small nod she gave him made him think she probably did believe him. She brushed her hair back out of her eyes. "Well, we are good since you kind of made a fool of yourself and didn't tell. But if you ever spy on me again, my revenge will not be swift or gentle."
Blaine gulped at the threat, not doubting she meant it. "Never again. Honestly, now that I think about it, it was less about you and Rachel and more an excuse for me to hang out with Kurt. I should have realized what I was doing."
She looked towards where Kurt and Kent were hugging for a long time and winced. Blaine tried not to look. He was already dying in the inside. "I get that. So… you haven't talked to him?"
Blaine shook his head. "It's pretty obvious he's not going to pick me though. I should have known."
She put a sympathetic hand on his arm. "I wouldn't count yourself out yet. Who knows what might happen?"
Blaine shrugged, not really sure how to answer that. Why would Kurt want him after all the he put him through? Why would Kurt want him when he had Kent?
"Blaine," Mr. Shuester called as Trent trudged out of the office and slumped into a seat. Blaine felt bad for him, knowing how strict his parents could be. He offered Trent a smile of solidarity as he passed by on his way to the office.
Inside, Mr. Shue sat behind the desk and Blaine sat in one of the seats opposite him. The teacher stared sternly at him over his folded arms for a few seconds, but Blaine couldn't find it in himself to care.
"I'm told this all starts with you, Blaine. Now, you're such a good kid I'm going to give you an opportunity to explain yourself before I call your parents—"
"Just call my mom, please," Blaine asked quietly. "My dad's working— he's a surgeon— and I don't want to bother him."
Mr. Shue took a few seconds to consider this before seeming to come to some conclusion. He wrote a little note down and dropped the pen. "Okay. Go ahead."
Blaine inhaled deeply and let it go. "It's all my fault. No one else's. It was my idea to go out tonight. I made Kurt. No one else would have been out of bed if they hadn't been woken by me. Going in the girls cabin was a stupid dare, but one I take full responsibility for." He pulled a crumpled piece of notebook paper out and handed it to Mr. Shuester. "This has my full confession on it. Please don't punish anyone but me. I actually have an idea for that as well."
Blinking in surprise, Mr. Shue read the paper. "Um… well, okay then. How about we call your mom and we can discuss that."
They did and predictably, his mother was pretty angry with him about the whole situation.
"I just do not understand why you would think it's okay to sneak out at night! You could have been hurt! And dragging everyone else along! Blaine, I'm very disappointed in this behavior! Your father is going to lose it! What do you have to say for yourself?"
Blaine took it all, tears dripping down his cheeks he didn't bother drying away. His mother being disappointed in him was just the icing on the cake. "You're right. Everything you said. I agree."
His mom was silent on the other end for a few moments before addressing Mr. Shue. "May I speak to my son in private please?"
He agreed and stepped out of the office so that it was only Blaine and his mother via speaker phone. When she spoke again, her voice was soft and careful. "Blaine? Honey, what happened?"
It was then he broke down. He tearfully told her everything he hadn't already. The actual truth. Then he told her what he had told everyone else and how he intended to take the blame.
Mom waited for him to finish before speaking. "Sweetie, I need you to take a deep breath for me. Can you do that?"
He breathed.
"Good. Now listen, I'm not exactly thrilled about a late night phone call about my son sneaking out at night and having some sort of party when you are there for theatre, but everyone makes mistakes. I believe you are sorry and there will be consequences, but I think what you're actually upset about is Kurt."
Blaine could only make a sad gurgle noise.
"I know it hurts, but life is full of disappointments. You will get over this, trust me. And Kurt is not the type to hold it against you. You can't help how you feel. I would apologize and let everything blow over before you—"
"I want to come home."
"What?"
Blaine's voice held no doubts. "I'm going to tell Mr. Shue that I'll take the blame. I'll leave camp and give up my lead— Well, half lead— and in exchange he can't punish anyone else."
"Sweetie, that's a little extreme—"
"I just want to come home Mom." A painful lump grew in his throat and more tears poured down his face. "It really hurts and I just want to come home. Please?"
"Oh, baby. Of course. If it's what you really want, you can come home. I'd really like for you to think about it some though."
Blaine wiped his face with his shirt. "I have. Can you please come get me?"
"I will be there about noon tomorrow. Go get some sleep for now and I'll let you know when I'm on the way. I love you, okay?"
"Love you too," he blubbered before the line went dead. He let himself cry for a minute more before grabbing a fresh sheet of paper and writing one more letter. This one to Kurt.
Mr. Shuester came back in and Blaine told him the plan. He seemed taken aback, but went along with what Blaine said. After leaving the office, everyone looked up, including Kurt who had joined Kent in the waiting area. Blaine barely met his eyes except to wordlessly hand him the letter he had just written to explain himself.
"Blaine?"
He didn't reply, but just followed Mr. Shue to the door.
"Everyone, please stay back for a few minutes while I ask you all a few questions. Blaine, you're excused to go sleep and pack."
He nodded and quickly slipped out the door, ignoring everyone yelling all at once and the shouts of his name.
He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep, so he just decided to go ahead and pack and then wait in the office for his mother. He tried to hurry so his friends couldn't try to talk him out of leaving. Not that they probably would at this point. He just hoped that no one else would be punished since he was taking the fall. His clothes were packed and he was just starting to take down his photos when the door slammed open and Kurt stomped in.
Blaine was half-shocked at his sudden appearance, half-transfixed by how pretty he looked. He was mad, oh boy was he mad, with eyes hard like glass and hands balled into fists. He marched straight up to Blaine and threw a ball of paper at his chest.
"Read your letter."
Blaine held up his hands. "Let me explain—"
"No, you're going to listen!" Kurt's chest heaved and angry tears gathered in his eyes. "You were just going to leave? After all that?"
"I—"
"You're my best friend! I need you! And I was fine! I was doing better! I wasn't pining away after you and I thought I had moved on!"
Blaine watched him pacing back and forth, not really sure how to help. "I'm sorry—"
"No! Shhh!" Kurt stopped pacing and grabbed Blaine's shirt in his fists. "I was doing better, feeling good about life, and then you decided to catch feelings!"
"I did but—"
"And you didn't tell me!"
"I couldn't!" Kurt's face blurred in front of him. "You're with Kent and I never wanted to hurt either of you."
Kurt sighed and let go of Blaine's shirt. He thumbed away Blaine's tears. "We broke up."
"What?" Now Blaine was definitely shocked. "But, but…"
"Yeah, I fucked up my first relationship. Happy?"
He felt like it was rhetorical, like Kurt wasn't really asking so he didn't say yes. "I'm sorry about that," he said instead.
"Hmm. Are you?"
"Of course."
Kurt searched his face. "Aren't you going to ask why?"
"His muscles are too big?" Blaine replied with only a little sass.
"Ha. No. Because I'm in love with you, dummy. I don't know if I ever stopped, truthfully."
"Oh…" Blaine breathed and saw the corner of Kurt's mouth twitch. "You… Oh…"
"Nothing else to say?" Kurt asked as he stared at Blaine's mouth. "You wrote me a whole letter and now nothing."
"Can I kiss you?" It was the only thing he could think of at the moment. Kurt didn't seem to mind. His best friend nodded and leaned in, eyes closed.
Blaine had imagined this moment (and honestly, so much more, but now wasn't the time) but nothing could have prepared him for how soft Kurt's lips actually were. He could never have anticipated the shivers that would shoot down his spine at the little gasp Kurt would make against his mouth. He couldn't imagine how it would feel to cup the back of his neck with one hand and his cheek with the other as they explored each other's mouths. Kurt was a good kisser, that was for certain. He hoped he was just as good. What was most perfect about the kiss was the overwhelming sense of correctness. There was no hesitation or thoughts that they had made a mistake, just bliss. For Blaine especially, it was like oh. This is what it's supposed to feel like!
Blaine was really getting into it when Kurt managed to disconnect his lips. "Honey. Hey, hang on."
The sound he made should have embarrassed him, but he was too dazed and happy to care. "Hhhm?" he replied intelligently.
Kurt was fighting a smile. "As much as I want to keep kissing you—"
"Okay," Blaine said as he dove in towards Kurt's lips. Kurt giggled and moved away.
"As much as I want to keep kissing you," Kurt said as he gently pushed Blaine back. "We need to talk."
"Oh. Okay."
Kurt paused, obviously waiting for Blaine to say something, but his brain had left the atmosphere. The only clear thought humming through it was to keep kissing Kurt. Regardless, he took a cleansing breath and put his hands on his hips. "What's up?"
"Are you still going to leave?"
Oh. Just as his heart had floated to his throat, it sunk back down to his shoes. He didn't want to leave now. He frowned. "I don't want to, but I don't know how to stay. I already told Mr. Shue that I would take the blame."
Kurt tugged him down to sit on his bunk. "Well, right after you left the office Coach Sylvester came in and yelled at Mr. Shue for not informing her about the situation. They screamed at each other for awhile and Brittany fell asleep. Most of us did, actually. It kind of takes the drama out of it when they do it all the time. Anyway, once we finally explained what was going on, she proposed that all of us have to polish her trophies and run laps instead of you taking all the blame. All of us agreed because none of us were letting you take the fall. We will be having words about that too. Mr. Shue finally agreed and asked me to go talk to you, but I was still pretty pissed off." He rubbed his arm sheepishly.
"Wow. It will suck being at Coach Sylvester's beck and call for a whole week, but I'll take it." He looked back at Kurt. "But why is she being so nice?"
Kurt rolled his eyes. "Before I left to come talk to you, she grabbed me and told me to convince you to stay. She said she believes in 'Klaine'."
They stared at each other for a few moments before bursting into laughter.
"Oh my god, she is such a weirdo!" Blaine said as he wiped at his eyes.
"Such a weirdo," Kurt agreed. They sobered a bit and Kurt shyly took Blaine's hand. A thrill shot through him at Kurt's warm touch. "So you are staying?"
Blaine nodded, a pang squeezing his heart at Kurt's hopeful expression. "Yeah. I'm staying. I'll have to text Mom ummph!" He was almost knocked down as Kurt gave him a bone-crushing hug. Without hesitation, he hugged Kurt back. He breathed him in and just let himself the feeling of having Kurt in his arms. They stayed like that for a long time until Kurt got a text from Artie asking if it was safe to come back in so they could go to bed.
"I know we still need to talk some more and we all need some sleep, but uh… Are we…" Blaine pressed the hem of his T-shirt flat, scared to ask the question he wanted to ask the most.
As usual, it was like Kurt could read his mind. He had stood to climb up into his own bunk while Blaine stayed seated. He grinned widely and kicked Blaine's foot. "Ask me."
"Are we boyfriends?"
Kurt didn't hesitate, but bent over and grabbed Blaine's chin. He kissed him sweetly on the lips, lingering but chaste. Blaine leaned into it, closing his eyes and letting Kurt have control. He didn't think he would ever get tired of kissing Kurt. It was going to be his new favorite thing.
"Yeah, we're boyfriends," Kurt said against his lips. "But we are also best friends."
We had originally planned to end on a cliffhanger and not have them get together yet, but we added that part since y'all have waited for so long . There is one more chapter after this for some fluffiness and to wrap everything up. We have a one shot planned for this verse, but if you have anything you would like to see, we would love to hear from you. We love all the ideas even if we can't always get them in, but we try! Thanks for reading and hope you liked this chapter!
