Steve came home with his family and got Lyla out of the car, and then got Liz out and carried her on his lap into the house. "What's up daughter? Did you enjoy your party?"
"Yes Daddy. My party was a 10," Liz said showing Steve her open hands.
"A ten? Where did she learn that, Cath?"
"I don't know, Steve. Probably on some show on TV. "
"I'm glad you liked it, honey. You deserve all the best," Steve kissed her forehead and set her down.
Caroline arrived soon after because she had returned home with Edward.
"She's delivered, Mr. McGarrett," Edward said to Steve.
"Good Edward."
"Ed, did you enjoy my party?" Liz asked the boy.
"Of course I did, Liz. Your party was beautiful just like you."
"Edward gave you a compliment. How do you say it?" Steve said to the girl.
"Thank you," Liz replied.
"You are welcome," Edward told her. "Well, I need to go. Good night Caroline, Mr. McGarrett, Lyla, Liz and Mrs. McGarrett."
"Good evening, Edward," they replied.
"Thank you for the invitation, Mrs. McGarrett. My father and Lidia loved the party too. Everything was perfect."
"Thank you, Edward. Tell them I appreciate their presence," Catherine replied to him and saw once again what she had realized for some time: Caroline didn't like it when Edward interacted with her family. She was jealous of him with his own family.
"I will," Edward replied and left. Caroline followed him out onto the porch.
Catherine looked at Lyla and Liz and Lyla immediately understood her. "I know, Mom. It's time to go take a shower, brush my teeth, and go to sleep."
"Exactly," Catherine replied and went upstairs with the girls while Steve went to get the things they brought from the party in the car. "Are you still there, Edward? Then help me get the stuff from the car," Steve said when he saw Edward with Caroline on the porch.
"There you go exploring Edward, Dad."
"Am I exploiting you, Edward?" Steve said to the boy.
"Of course not, Mr. McGarrett. It's a pleasure to be able to help you."
"Mr. McGarrett, may I ask you a question?" Edward said to Steve as they picked up their things in the car.
"As long as you don't ask me if you can marry my 17-year-old daughter, that's fine."
"It's not that...at least not yet..."
"Speak up Edward. I don't have all night," Steve told the boy.
"Do you think I have what it takes to be a cop?"
"Forget about it, Edward. There are plenty of careers for you to pursue."
"Do you think I'm weak?" Edward asked.
"It's not that, Edward. This job has taken a lot out of me, given me a lot of enemies, and I don't want that to happen to you. Whether or not you marry Caroline at some point in your life, I want you to be happy, and I'm sure your father wants that for you too. Talk to him and ask his opinion. That's my opinion."
"My father doesn't talk to me much. He pays more attention to Maggie."
"Well, Maggie doesn't live on the island anymore. She married my ungrateful son, remember?"
Edward laughed at the way Steve spoke. "Yes, I remember."
"Then try to talk to your father more."
"OK, Mr. McGarrett. I'll try."
Edward helped Steve and then Steve told him to go home and pointed at Caroline. "This girl needs to sleep."
After putting everything away, Steve went to the children's room. They were already in bed in their pajamas. "I came to say good night."
"Good night, Daddy! Love you!" Liz said to Steve.
"I love you too Daddy. Good night!" It was Lyla's turn to respond.
Steve kissed their foreheads. "I love you both too."
Steve went into the bedroom and he went into the bathroom while Catherine was taking a shower. "Got room for one more in there?" he asked her as he was already taking off his clothes.
"Of course," Catherine replied and he joined her.
"The party was good wasn't it? Liz was so happy," Catherine said as Steve kissed her neck.
"The party was good. Now we're going to have our own private party and it's going to be great," Steve whispered in her ear.
