As Hermione rushed up the stairs to Harry's room, she felt elated. Even Professor Trelawney's third prophecy had managed to slip her mind. The prophecy, made now almost a year ago, claimed that when Harry found his true love, the demons of the underworld would be unleashed on Earth. But Harry had managed to defeat the last death eater, an actual demon, who was currently rotting in Azkaban. After everything that had happened, maybe they would get a second chance after all. Hermione found Harry standing on his balcony, looking out to the city. She wondered if the relief she felt would be mirrored in his face.
"You know, it's over," she said, but Harry didn't turn to look at her and didn't answer. She could see the tension lining his back as the silence ticked on. "Isn't it? Over?"
"I'd say yes, Hermione, but I'd be lying and," he said, "we both know I don't do that to you anymore."
He turned to face her as she felt her heart sinking and crashing to the ground. The despair in his face pained her.
"Tonight, we won but we just plugged one hole in a very flimsy boat," Harry said to her, his eyes bright with tears. "He told me that he's just the beginning. They'll continue to hunt me."
She couldn't believe what he was saying was true, that the fight would never be over. Nearly a year after she and Harry had first gone out on the hunt for Voldemort, they were doing more and more battling instead of less. What Dumbledore hadn't known about was Voldemort's second army, the one that had been in it's early stages when he had died.
"It's only a matter of time until the other demons come to earth," Harry said. Hermione nodded, trying not to cry. "And they'll come for Ron again"
Ron was currently lying in critical condition at St. Mungo's after the demon had cast a particularly nasty spell on him.
"Or…" Harry continued and then he hesitated, the pain of saying the next words evident on his face. She watched him, his handsome features etched into her mind forever. "Maybe you."
She could not break eye contact with him as she nodded again. He could not be doing this to her, not now.
"I see, so what, what are you saying?" she asked. She had to hear him say the words out loud.
"I have to keep going," he ground out, clearly not wanting to say the words out loud. He kept eye contact with her and she could see his eyes shining. She could feel the tears coming to her eyes.
"So for how long?" she asked. "A couple weeks or months or…"
She did not finish and he did not answer.
"You were right," he said instead and she suddenly found she did not want to hear this.
"No," she said and she closed her eyes, shaking her head. She did not want to beg but even her pride would not get in the way of asking him to stay. "No. No see this…this is…is what I meant. You can't leave me. Please don't go. I…I love you. I love you."
She had not meant to say it, but the words had just slipped out and the moment she uttered them, she knew they were true. Harry laughed humorlessly.
"My first love was never Ginny," Harry said, walking towards her. He wiped the tears she didn't realize had started to fall. "It was you, Hermione."
He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. After a moment, she put her hands on either sides of his face, holding him close. Too soon, he was pulling away as she held onto his jacket collar.
"Goodbye," he said, backing away. She could feel her heart breaking in two at the idea of losing him forever. He reached out a hand to touch her cheek and her eyes fluttered close, unable to see him leaving her behind.
And after the familiar whoosh of someone disapparating, she knew she was left standing alone.
