The air was clean smelling. It was relaxing after having been stuck in New York for so long. They werent far outside of the city but it was enough for Newt to relax. Around them was farm land there was a small two story house in front of him.
Picquery had said when he tried to refuse the house, "Mr. Scamander we provide living accommodations to those who need it. The Goldstein sisters chose to live in the city rather than getting a house. Now go check it out with your friends to ensure it's up to your standards."
She obviously thought a lot higher of his standards than he did. Newt was 100% okay with staying in his case. It was what he did when he was traveling. Only occasionally did he stay in hotels or houses. Mostly his family's manor whenever he was in England.
Tina said with a frown, "There aren't any wards up. We will have to rectify this."
Newt didn't reply instead he headed towards the front door. The front was made of wood and he could feel a connection to the world around him. It was stronger here than it had been in the city but nowhere near the comfortable connection that he was used to.
Entering the house he was hit with a musty scent. It was obvious that no one had lived in the house for a long time. The room he entered was a living room that had a coat closet right as he entered. In the back of his mind he felt a fair of Low Magick. Turning he looked back out the door he just came through.
Queenie and Jacob were walking up the lawn. The baker had a giant grin on his face as he saw Newt standing there. Without his conscious thought for it Newt reached out with his magic towards Jacob. Slowly the other's reached back towards him and a connection was made. He felt the other's consciousness in the back of his mind now. It wasn't nearly as strong as the connection he had with his creatures but it was growing.
"Come in everyone," he called out, "I'm going to check out the rooms."
Tina called out, "There is a door to the basement on the backside of the house."
"Thank you."
Newt headed towards the back passing by the stairs that led up to the second floor. Every part of the floor was wood and well taken care of. He passed by the kitchen which was all new. In a hidden corner however there was a door that led down into the basement.
As soon as he opened it cool air hit him and he headed door stairs. He pulled out his wand and silently cast a Lumos. With that he headed down into the basement. It was fairly basic and with some enchantments it would fit his creatures. His and the creatures he would rescue for MACUSA.
With that done he returned to the first floor where Tina was checking over the security. Jacob unsurprisingly was in the kitchen. Queenie he could hear was somewhere on the second floor.
Tina asked, "Does the basement work for you, Newt? I can help with expansion charms if you need me to."
Newt answered with a glance at her through his fringe, "It will do what is needed. I need to add enchantments but that can be done later. How is the rest of the house?"
Queenie said from behind him causing him to jump slightly, "All the bedrooms and bathrooms are as Madame Picquery said. Are you sure you want this, Newt? You can stay with us as long as you need to."
With a critical eye he looked around the house again. Then he nodded. It was more than what he needed for a home and far enough away from the city that his connection to the world was clear. It was as good as he was going to get. They accepted this.
...
It took three days for Newt and Jacob to get moved into his house. It was at his insistence that Jacob stayed with him. This was both to expand the other's talents and for Newt to keep his friend close.
Tina and Queenie insisted on getting him furniture. While they did that he did the basic enchantments on the basements. This expanded it to accommodate what he needed. The more extravagant enchantments required a Master Enchanter. Luckily for Newt there was one in the southern part of the continent. An owl and two of the three days found it perfect habitats for his creatures.
The enchanter promised to return if Newt ever needed him. His final day was spent helping his creatures adjust to their new home. A few would continue to help him on his adventures but no longer would they be in danger if he was attacked.
On the fourth day basic wards were set up and he was settled in. He woke up to the scents of fresh pastries that made his mouth water. It had been a long time since someone cooked for him much less baked. Blearily Newt changed from his pyjamas into a plain white shirt and black slacks. Not bothering with his hair he headed down the stairs into the kitchen.
In his kitchen was Queenie and Jacob amicably chatting. When Jacob saw Newt he greeted happily, "Good morning Newt! Did you sleep well?"
Newt gave him a tired warm smile as he answered, "Better than I have in some time."
He didn't say that he avoided sleep like the plague and having more than an hour or two at a time was a win. That would only make them worry if he told them. Still his answer made Jacob beam and push a plate of unfamiliar pastries towards him.
The pastry he chose was fairly large and had some kind of icing on it. When he bit into it sweetness hit him.
"It's sweet," he breathed looking at Jacob in surprise.
Jacob looked at him unsure as he asked, "I hope that's okay. I didn't know what you liked so I made multiple kinds of pastries. You can have a muffin or maybe a turnover or..."
"Jacob," interrupted Newt and the other stopped, "It's perfect. Thank you."
Jacob blinked at him a few times before he said softly, "Of course Newt."
