Ok, so here's an update as quickly as possible. Sadly this story has had few reviews so let me know if you want me to continue.

He walked, for how long he was not sure. The rest of the afternoon had been a blur, with giving statements and holding Jenny as she screamed in disbelief. All he could think to do was walk, and so that is what he did. Suitable weather to attribute to pathetic fallacy eluded him as the sun beat down, the streets littered with people enjoying a warm spring afternoon. The city was alive with the hope of a summer to come.
The sun's strength soon weakened matching the weary strength in Booth's steps. He was walking in circles, the warm spring air turning cold as the sun dipped below the horizon. As the night drew on Booth found the streets had become deserted, his world dark, except for that one light, the one lit up window in the block. The light that he prayed wouldn't be there, but inevitably was. He didn't know what to say to her. He didn't quite know how he ended up in front of her building having bargained with himself that he'd only go in if her light was on.
He tiredly made his way to her door making one solitary knock with his fist. Having given her just seconds to answer the door he made excuses to himself that she wasn't there and began to move away. He wasn't quick enough though, and she pulled back her door, a soft smile playing across her lips. Her smile quickly dissipated when she saw him. Maybe she was expecting someone else, he mused.
"Booth, what's wrong?" Brennan asked, her hand reaching out to catch his own. Booth backed away to avoid her touch, confusing her even more.
"Do you want to come in Booth?" She asked, cursing herself for never knowing the right thing to do.
"Sorry, Bones, I shouldn't have come. I'll um...I'll go. I'll see you in the morning ok?" He stuttered, beginning to back away from her.
After a moments hesitation Brennan moved towards him and caught his hand, more firmly this time. Booth's eyes focussed on the floor and she raised her free hand using it to tilt Booth's head towards her. Once she had his attention her fingers lingered on his jaw for a second longer before she dared speak. "Please Booth, please just come in."
Booth saw the worry in her eyes, guilt immediately flashing through him.
"I'm fine Bones, I shouldn't have come here; I probably woke you."
"Booth," she hesitated, her hand still wrapped around his, "you are obviously not fine and you know full well you didn't wake me. Come in, have a drink. Say nothing if you like, just do me a favour and come in."
Booth nodded what Brennan took as an agreement before she pulled him into her apartment, their hands breaking apart as she locked the door. Booth moved to sit on the couch, placing his head in his hands as he did so. Biding her time, Brennan went into the kitchen to get them both a beer, what on earth had happened to him?
She set the beers down on the table in front of him and sat nervously down next to him. After a moment she noticed small drips of water landing on the floor under Booth, silently his tears fell and she had no idea what to do. She debated the most appropriate course of action in her head until her heart could let her debate no more.
She fell to her knees in front of him pulling him into her arms. His tears soaked her shoulder, his body shaking with the effort of trying to keep his sobs in.
She held him in silence for what seemed like hours. Her only movement was to stroke the back of is head and pull him tighter to her. Her heart broke for him and she hoped that her touch would be enough, that it would be enough for him to feel all of the emotions that she had contained within her and did not have the words for yet.
His heart pounded against his chest, salty tears tracking down his face, eyes stinging with more tears yet to come. His arms were wrapped around her as if she was a lifeline, which at that very moment she probably was; her contact giving him reason to fight the demons within.
"I am so sorry." He whispered against her neck, his tears making tracks down her pale skin.
"Booth, you have nothing to apologise to me for." Brennan assured, turning her head towards him, placing a kiss on his forehead before smoothing her hand through his hair.
The ringing of Brennan's cell broke the trancelike state they were in.
"You'd better get that." Booth stated, his voice bereft of emotion. He released his grip on her, sitting back, turning his face from her so she could not see his weakness.
"Booth, I can leave it. It's probably nothing." She suggested, moving to sit next to him.
"How many people call you at 2am for nothing Bones?" He asked, daring to raise his eyes to meet hers.
Deciding he may actually want some space Brennan moved to answer her phone, which was on the kitchen counter.
"Brennan." She answered, her eyes focussed on Booth who was trying desperately to regain a sense of calm.
"Dr Brennan, It's Rebecca I am sorry to call so late, is Seeley with you?"
"Yes he is." Brennan replied, now aware, judging by Booths response he wasn't even trying to eavesdrop, this is not good, she thought.
"I just wanted to see if he is okay, his cell has been switched off all day and after I heard what happened I was worried."
"I…" How do I begin this? Brennan asked herself, "I have no idea what has happened." Brennan answered honestly.
"Oh." Rebecca replied "But he's with you now?"
"Just about." Brennan answered, the sigh Rebecca's end indicating that she understood.
"His old friend Major Peter Sampson committed suicide this afternoon."
"Oh god." Brennan sighed, leaning against the counter for support.
"Booth was there."
The line was silent as Brennan took in what Rebecca was saying and Rebecca thanked the heavens that at least she now knew where Booth was. He may not be the love of her life but she still loved him in a way that she doubted would ever fade.
"Look after him okay Dr Brennan?" Rebecca asked.
"Of course I will, thank you for… thank you." She faltered.
"You're welcome." Rebecca replied before hanging up the phone. Brennan listened to the phone go dead before hanging up herself. What the hell was she supposed to say to him?
As Brennan moved towards him Booth caught her eye, seemingly pulled from a daze he leaned forward and picked up the bottle of beer she had left him. He took a swig and smiled back at Brennan's worried face.
"I'm glad you didn't give me any of that Moroccan stuff Bones. That may have just finished me off." He smiled, neither of them believing in the sincerity of his smile.
"Don't look so worried Bones." He lectured, regaining control and ready to hide behind his tough guy mask.
"Booth of course I am worried about you. I wouldn't be a very good friend if I wasn't would I?"
"Well there is no need. I'm fine."
"What happened Booth?" She asked, her tone conveying her concern.
"Bones… one day, one day we'll talk about it. Just not now okay? Just let it be."
"I'm not very good at that." She replied, a frown making its way across her brow.
"Now you can say that again." He smiled, the first genuine smile in what felt like forever. She saw his smile and took that as a green light to sit down beside him.
"It's times like this I wish you had a TV Bones, still haven't replaced it?"
"Evidently not."
Booth just shook his head. She was so different to any other woman he had ever met.
"You should probably get some sleep Booth; you look exhausted." Brennan advised.
"Okay." Booth agreed, his face falling, "If you need to sleep I'll go. Sorry to keep you up." He said sincerely as he began to stand up.
"No, no Booth that's not what I meant." She assured, placing a hand on his arm to restrain him from standing.
"God, I just want to get out of this place." Booth complained, getting more agitated again.
"Out of my apartment?" Brennan asked, confused, removing her hand from his arm.
"No not from here, not from you, just away from all of this, from DC, from work, away. Just away Bones. I know it makes no sense it's just…"
"It makes perfect sense Booth." She interrupted, standing herself.
"Come on." She commanded, extending her hand to him.
"Where are we going?" Booth asked, allowing her to help him to his feet.
"You'll see when we get there."
