AN: Hey guys! So here's the epilogue. Just thought I'd tell you that there will be M-rated content in this chapter/epilogue. I'll make sure to put a short note right before it to warn you though, so don't worry! Enjoy. (Also, I feel like I should tell you guys, that Alec is 21 years old, while Magnus is 25, and I probably should've mentioned that a while ago... sorry!
November 21st
"Who do you want to have over for Christmas?" Alec asked as he looked up from the book he had been reading. He had felt Magnus eyes on him, so he knew he wasn't asleep or doing something else. And just as he thought, Magnus was resting his head on the airplane seat's side, staring at him.
"I don't know. Ragnor, maybe Will. Catarina if she has time to take a break from saving the world," Magnus said, reaching over and resting his hand on Alec's thigh. Alec smiled a bit at the gesture and nodded.
"Whoever you want, just invite them. I'll invite the usual, alright?"
Magnus nodded and smiled. He did not take his eyes off Alec even as Alec looked out the airplane window. There were still about two hours until they arrived in Paris, and even though Alec had tried reading, he couldn't focus. Magnus had been trying to sleep for the last hour or so, but not succeeding either, so he had been staring at Alec for a while. Alec looked at Magnus again. "Why are you staring at me?"
Magnus grinned. "Because you're beautiful."
Alec gave a sort of amused snort and laughed quietly, attempting to laugh it off but not being able to hide his blush. "Shut up."
Magnus frowned. "It's true. I know you don't ever look in mirrors, but if you did, you'd see how gorgeous you are."
Alec's blush deepened and he looked out the window. Magnus squeezed his thigh gently, demanding his attention. Alec looked at him.
"I mean it, Alec."
Alec nodded again. "I know. I just don't understand how someone like you can see any kind of beauty in me."
"Someone like me?"
"Someone so… Perfect. No, that doesn't even cover it. You are beyond perfect, Magnus. I don't understand how you can see beauty in anyone who's not as amazing as you."
"Alec, you are-"
"No, don't. I know what you'll say, and you know I won't believe it. So can't we just leave it?"
That upset Magnus. He was determined to make Alec see how gorgeous he was. So he reached over to Alec, pulling him up from his seat and having him sit down so that he straddled Magnus' lap. Alec looked at him and blushed deeply, and then he looked around to see if anyone was looking at them. "People are looking, Mags…"
"I don't care, Alec. Let them look. All they're going to see is a beautiful man, a beauty beyond this world. I want you to understand how amazing you are, Alexander. You're my everything, and if you don't believe me when I tell you you're beautiful…" He let his voice trail off, looking into Alec's eyes that had found their way back to his golden greens. He reached up and placed a hand of either side of Alec's jaw, cupping his face.
"You can think I'm beautiful all you want, but how can you be okay with people staring at us like this?"
Magnus smiled a bit and pulled his face down to be levelled with his own. Alec's face flushed and his eyes darted over to the people in the row next to theirs. He looked back into Magnus' eyes as he started talking.
"I can be fine with it because I want them to see us. I want them to know you're mine, that you're taken. I want to show you off to everyone."
Alec's eyes widened and his mouth fell slightly open. "I…"
"Don't," Magnus said and leaned forward, eyes slipping shut, and caught Alec's lips. It wasn't questioning, it wasn't an offer; it was a demand. Sooner or later Alec would have to get used to showing affection in public, and Magnus was determined to make that soon.
That evening
"Hey Jem. What are you and Tess doing for Christmas?"
"I don't know. Probably just staying here. We don't really have any plans. Why?"
Alec smiled and poured the recently boiled water into his cup. He was making tea. He changed hands so he now had his phone in the left hand so he could use his right hand to make tea. "We're having this sort of… Christmas gathering, I guess you could call it. Everyone's coming. We're inviting some of Magnus' friends, too. So I was wondering if you guys wanted to come too."
"Oh, yeah, that sounds cool. I'll ask Tess when she gets home later, alright. Text you the answer."
Alec nodded even though he knew Jem couldn't see it. "Yeah, text me. We'll talk later."
Alec hung up first for just about the first time in his life.
December 24th
Isabelle and the others stumbled in the door all at the same time. Isabelle and Jace were having some fight about who got to get the first present of the night, and Alec couldn't help but roll his eyes at them. Isabelle hugged him tightly as soon as she saw him though, holding him close for a moment and whispering I missed you in his ear. He nodded and patted her back, and she let go after a moment.
Later that night, after they had dinner, they were all gathered around in the living room area – the big Christmas tree in the middle of the living room. They were sitting on chairs and the two couches. Jace and Isabelle had eventually agreed on giving Alec and Magnus the first gift of the night, handing it to Alec to let him unwrap the not-very-neatly wrapped present with red wrapping paper and yellow ribbon. He looked up at them and shook his head. Then he looked at it and opened it.
It was a car key. Alec looked up at them and raised an eyebrow. "A car key? I'm sorry, but I can't use the key for much."
Isabelle stuck out her tongue and got up from the couch. She walked over to them – Magnus and Alec had been sitting in a couch next to each other – and pulled them up from their couch. Alec rolled his eyes, but followed her when she left the apartment and down onto the street. She walked over to a shiny black car – a 1967 Chevy Impala and leaned her back against it, crossing her arms and looking at them with a grin.
"Did you…"
"We all pitched in. I even called Jem and Tessa and they wanted to help too, even though they couldn't be here. This was the kind of car you've wanted since forever, so this is the one we chose. Do you like it?"
Alec didn't say anything. He just stood there, staring at the beautiful car and holding the key in his hand tighter. His eyes were wide. "You… You shouldn't have."
Isabelle grinned wider and got over and hugged him. He refused to let go of her for a while. "Thank you, Iz. It's beautiful."
Just then, someone shouted Magnus' name from down the street. They all looked up to see a young man who looked just like Alec – the blue eyes, the black hair and the pale skin.
Magnus lit up in a smile and ran over to him, hugging him. Alec couldn't help the small sting of jealousy he felt. Alec just watched them as they hugged and talking briefly before Magnus brought him over to the others. He looked sort of closed off – probably one of those people who was only really nice to people he knew well. Like Magnus, apparently.
"Guys, this is Will. And Will, this-" he gestured to all the others except for Alec, "is a bunch of really cool people." Magnus smiled at him. Alec looked away, biting his lip. "But this," Magnus continued and gestured towards Alec, "is probably the most amazing person I've ever met. My boyfriend, Alec Lightwood."
Alec looked up at Magnus and blushed. Then he looked at Will and tried his best to give him a friendly smile, and Will returned it, giving him a nod.
After talking for a bit, they all went inside and sat back down in the couches. Will sat down next to Magnus on the couch, leaving Alec to sit in the arm chair on the other side of the room. He bit his lip and sat down, looking away. Magnus looked over at him, smiled and shrugged.
A little later, when a few more gifts had been given out, and there weren't a lot more for them, Magnus pulled Alec into the kitchen. Alec sad down at the table and looked up at him. "What's up?" he asked, looking at Magnus as he sat on the table almost right in front of him.
"What's wrong with you tonight? You seem... off," Magnus said, putting his right hand on Alec's jaw line and trailing gentle patterns on Alec's cheek with his left hand. Alec pulled back a bit and looked up at him.
"Nothing's wrong."
Magnus sighed and looked him in the eyes. "Why are you acting so weird when I'm around Will?"
Alec looked away. "I'm not," he said, reached up and rubbed quickly under his nose for just a second. He leaned back in the chair and crossed his arms over his chest. Magnus sighed. He knew body language, and these weren't good signs.
"Why are you lying to me?" he asked in a stern voice, looking straight at him.
Alec didn't look at him. He sighed and bit his lip. "He looks like me," he said quietly. Magnus merely stared at him for a second before his shoulders slumped and he grabbed Alec's head by his jaw line with both hands, gently making him look at him.
"Listen to me, Alexander. I don't care one bit what he looks like. I know he looks like you. But you're ten times as beautiful as he is. And it doesn't even matter, does it? Everyone has a type, and mine just happens to be black hair and blue eyes. But he's my friend and you're my boyfriend, and I love you so, so much, Alexander."
Alec yanked back and stared at him. "You guys dated?" His eyes were wide open and his mouth hung slightly open as well.
Magnus sat up straight and looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "I thought I told you that already."
Alec got out of his chair and walked over to the sink. He put a hand on either side of it, putting all his weight on his hands, as if he was going to throw up. "Well, you didn't."
Magnus jumped off the table and walked over to him. He pulled him by the shoulder, forcing him to face him. He reached up with both arms and clasped his hands together behind Alec's neck. "Listen to me now. It doesn't matter that I dated him. I love you, not him. Alright?" he said, pulling Alec closer until they were forehead to forehead. Alec only looked away and bit his lip.
Magnus let go of him and pulled away. He walked over to the window, placed his hands on the sill and looked out. "I don't know what to do anymore, Alec. You're my everything, but you never believe me when I tell you these things. Why don't you understand that I love you more than anything else in the world?"
Alec's eyes widened, but he didn't answer. He walked over to Magnus and wrapped his arms around his chest, hugging him from behind. He hadn't meant to upset him. "I'm sorry. I'm just so scared of losing you, because I don't understand it. I don't see the reason you love me so much, but I'm so happy you do."
Magnus sighed and turned around towards him without letting Alec's arms release their grip around his chest. He put his own arms around Alec's shoulders, pulling him closer. "You idiot, I adore you."
Alec sighed and rested his head on Magnus' shoulder. They stood like that for a little while, before they let go of each other and went back into the living room to the others. They sat back down where they were before, Alec in the chair and Magnus next to Will in the couch. Magnus had a little surprise, though.
"I have a gift for you, darling. Come over here and I'll give it to you."
Alec looked up at him and got out of the chair and over to him. When he was there, Magnus got up. "Okay, sit down and I'll go get it." Alec sat down next to Will and looked after Magnus as he went inside the bedroom. What could he give him that wouldn't be under the tree for some reason? Soon enough Magnus got back out from the bedroom, but he was carrying something in his arms, something alive and tiny, it was...
A kitten.
Alec's eyes widened. "Is that...?" Magnus grinned and nodded, walking over to him and letting him take the kitten from his arms. "Oh my god. I did think something was making an awful lot of noise in there," Alec said, smiling widely and petting the blue Persian kitten. It was adorable. He looked up at Magnus and smiled, got up and kissed him. He didn't get close to Magnus though, scared of crushing the little kitten. The kitten, which would later be named Church, meowed and jumped from Alec's arms down on the floor, strutting around the living room. As Alec looked at it he couldn't help but laugh. He looked up at Magnus. "Thank you. I love it already."
The night went on with presents, and as they all had had enough to drink, a lot of singing and laughing as well. It was the best Christmas Alec had had for a lot of years.
April 31st
Alec had not expected this many to be there. This big of an audience. His book had been out for about two weeks now, and a lot of people had already bought and read their copy, giving them a bigger profit than they had expected in only a matter of two weeks.
As Alec heard himself being introduced, he got even more nervous than he had been at any point in his entire life. There were so many people out there, cheering for him, having come to see him and hear him talk to people about his book and everything on his and their mind.
As he walks out onto the stage prepared for him, he dully wonders if they will ask about Magnus, and how many of them already know about his sexuality, and if anyone would choose to push his books away because of it. No doubt it would be an issue discussed much and often between his readers.
As he reaches the podium with the microphone, he forces himself to be calm and collected. He smiles at the crowd. "Hello. I'm Alexander Lightwood."
February 7th; a year later
Alec was sitting in his office at home when Magnus opened the door and walked in. Alec had been working on his next book, but looked up to see Magnus looking at him. Church was lying on the couch, sleeping and purring, creating a nice background sound for Alec.
"Magnus, I'm working. Can't it wait?"
Magnus shook his head and took the chair that had been standing by the wall, and sat it next to Alec. Alec looked at him and sighed, turning his chair so that he was facing Magnus completely. "Be quick."
Magnus nodded at this. "Okay, just one question. I know we haven't been together for that long, but I thought it was kind of important to discuss it. What about children?"
Alec raised an eyebrow. "Children?"
"Do you want kids?"
Alec hesitated, his mouth falling open. "I… I don't know, do you?"
Magnus looked down and nodded slowly. "I think so. I mean, not now. Eventually."
Alec nodded, surprised - he hadn't expected a yes. "Well, maybe we should adopt then. In the future."
"It's not an issue?"
Alec's eyebrows went further up in surprise, then furrowed in confusion. "Why would it be an issue?"
"It's just, if you don't want kids..."
Alec spun the chair to face the desk again and he looked at his computer screen, where a word document was open with a rough draft of his next book – the rough draft was finished, and he was editing it now. He shut the screen down, closing his computer, and looked out the window above the desk. It was a good view of the city, the Eiffel Tower in the distance. "It's not really that I don't want kids, I just... I don't know if I'd be a good father to a child. And what if the kid gets bullied in school because of us? I don't want that. I'm not good with kids anyway, and if they would get bullied because of me..."
Magnus took one of his hands, and Alec looked over at him. "Shut up, Alec. You'd be a great father. I saw you with Max, even if it wasn't long, and you're good at handling kids. That kid adored you. And if they get bullied, we can help them; go to the school's teachers, whatever. I don't care. I don't want you to be scared of that because of our sexuality."
"You really think I could be a good father?"
Magnus smiled. "The best. Now get back to work."
July 25th
"What are we going to do today?" Magnus asked. He was lying in the bed on his stomach, head propped up in his hands, his elbows resting on the bed and looking at Alec. Alec was sitting up with his back against the wall, running his hand slowly through Magnus' messy hair, and Church was nestled on his lap, meowing for attention every now and then. They had spent about two hours in bed now, not doing anything, just talking to each other about everything and anything. It seemed Magnus was getting a bit impatient now, though. "It's such good weather outside."
Alec smiled at his boyfriend, however keeping his eyes on his own hand playing with Magnus' hair. "Yeah, it is. Is there anything particular you want to do?"
"We could go to the beach."
Alec's hand stopped moving for a second, but he quickly continued. "I don't have any swimming trunks."
"We'll get you some."
"Magnus..."
"Oh come on! It would be amazing! Maybe you could even get some colour. And I'm sure you look sexy as hell coming up from the water with wet hair and water running down your body..."
"What you're describing is coming out from a shower, and we've showered together before, so you've already seen that. And at the beach we don't have any privacy."
"Very true. And we like privacy. It gives me the opportunity to do whatever I want to you whenever I want. But at the beach I get to show you off to everyone."
Alec blushed and pulled his hand back. "People will be staring at you, not me."
"Alexander, please? Just let me take you to the beach. If you don't have fun, I won't ever ask you to come again, I promise."
Alec sighed. "Okay, fine. This one time. But we have to go and buy swimming trunks first, I really don't have any."
Magnus smirked. "No problem."
An hour and a half later
Magnus pulled his shirt off, tossing it into the bag next to the towels lying on the sand. Alec was sitting on one of them, but he hadn't taken off his shirt yet, even though he was wearing his new swimming trunks.
"Come on, come swim with me."
"I'm fine here. Just fine."
Magnus took his hand and forced him to stand up. "Come swim with me, or I will rip the clothes off of you and force you out into the water."
Alec sighed, grabbing his shirt by the neck and yanked it up and over his head, throwing it onto the towel, not bothering to put it in the bag. They had already taken off their shoes, so now Magnus pulled him down to the water. Alec was glad it wasn't one of those beaches with a bunch of stones you had to get through, and then a bunch of seaweed. This was all white sand so far his eyes could see. He stumbled after Magnus, trying not to trip in the water.
As soon as they had gotten out to where the water reached Alec's waist, Magnus let go of him and threw himself into the water, taking a few strokes and enjoying the water. Alec followed him quickly, swimming father out and diving into the water. When he got up from the water, his hair was soaking wet and he wiped his eyes so that he could see again.
He looked over to see Magnus looking at him with a huge smile on his face. "I knew this would be a good look on you."
Alec stuck out his tongue at him, and they continued swimming for about half an hour before they got out of the water. Alec sat down on the towel after drying himself off with a smaller towel and grabbed the bag. He got out a piece of paper and a pen, along with a portable desk. Folding it out, he put the paper on it and looked out over the water.
"You're going to write now?" Magnus asked, lying down on his back on the other towel to dry in the sun. He looked over at Alec who was still looking out over the water.
"The best way to know how to describe it is when you're in the situation, Magnus. If I need to write about a popular beach and describe that in one of my books, this will be perfect, don't you think?"
Magnus smiled at him. He really did love it. "Yeah, I guess so."
January 16th, 3 years later
Alec woke up to a knocking on the front door. Magnus was not lying next to him in the bed. What the hell? Alec got up, out of bed and put on some clothes as quickly as he could. He had been to the gym the night before, pushing himself as far as he could, and his muscles ached. He glanced to where Magnus should have been lying asleep. Where the hell is he? He got out to the front door, opening it and had to stare for a few second to wake up enough to take in what was in front of him. There was a man standing in front of him in a uniform consisting of a red polo shirt and khaki pants and a red cap sitting firmly on his head. In his arms, he had a big bouquet of white and light pink roses and a few different coloured primroses. A few burgundy and red roses caught his eyes immediately, standing out from the bright colours. They were all thorn less. "Uh… Hello?"
The man smiled a charming smile. "Are you Alexander Lightwood?"
Alec nodded and looked at the flowers. "Yes," he said, quietly but loud enough for the man to hear. The man handed him a paper and asked him to sign it. Afterwards he handed the flowers over to Alec. He left right after.
Alec went inside, finding a vase to put them in and put some water in it. He looked at them and noticed a black card. Opening it, he saw a short message in gold italic letters. Meet me at the Luxembourg Gardens. Wear something nice. No signature or anything.
Before he left though, he wanted to check up on the flowers. He knew a bit of flower language, but had forgotten about the roses and primroses. He sighed, turning on his computer and looking up flower language. Let's see. White is innocence and purity, light pink is desire and passion and joy of life. Primroses are eternal love. Red roses mean true love and burgundy roses mean unconscious beauty… His thoughts immediately went back to Magnus, who he had completely forgotten, seeing the flowers. They must have been from him, right? But why did he send flowers, and why wasn't he there?
Alec sighed, not bothering thinking much more about it, and went to change his clothes. He took a shower and brushed his teeth. He had been told to wear something nice; however he didn't want to overdo it. He wore a pair of black jeans and a white button up with a black blazer over and figured that had to be good enough.
As he walked out, he looked around for the car, but Magnus had taken it. He sighed inwardly and walked to get to the subway, buying a ticket and getting on the train just before the doors shut and it drove off.
20 minutes later
As Alec arrived in Luxembourg Gardens, the first thing he saw was the lights still in the naked trees. It was still very early, so the sun wasn't up yet, so they were the only thing that lit up the place. Soon he saw a figure a few hundred meters away and started walking towards it. As he got closer, he saw Magnus. He was wearing black jeans as well, but he was wearing a black shirt underneath a sparkly purple suit jacket that stood fantastically to his blue green eyes, that look mostly green in the dark. Alec was speechless.
"Hey love," Magnus said, smiling and looking at him. Alec just stared at him, keeping direct eye contact with dilated pupils. "I know it's early, but it's most beautiful now, and there are no people around. What's the matter? Were you expecting someone else?"
"No… No, I wasn't, I just-" he paused and looked away shortly. He sat down on the bench next to them. "What's with the flowers?"
"I wanted it to be as special as possible. Did you like them?"
Alec nodded, smiling and looking at Magnus. "Yeah. They're gorgeous. I put them in water before I left. Why are we here, Maggie? What's happening?"
Magnus took a deep breath, and then sat down next to him. He took Alec's hands in his, brushing the backs of his hands softly with his thumbs. "Alec, we have been together for a long time now, right?" Alec's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but he nodded. Magnus took another deep breath. "I'm sorry, I'm really nervous."
That made Alec even more confused, but he didn't say anything. He didn't want to make Magnus even more nervous than he obviously already were, so he just smiled reassuringly. Magnus had never been nervous around him before, and it made him want to hug him forever and tell him that no matter it was, it was alright.
"Alec, you know I love you. You know that, don't you?" Alec nodded, brows still deeply furrowed in confusion. Magnus moved closer to him. "I love you. I love you more than I could ever even describe. Alexander, ever since we started spending every day together, my life has been worth so much more. I didn't care about love before. I used to think everyone ended up miserable anyway, so what's the point of trying to find someone to love?
"But then... Then you came along. At first I didn't realise it. You were just... Another guy, you know? Even if you were stunningly beautiful. But as I spent more time with you, my world started... falling apart. Everything I ever thought was right is wrong. I thought I didn't need love to survive, but I do. Oh God, I do. I am so reliant on you telling me you love me every day. And I know you might think I don't need it. You think I don't need it, don't you? That I'm so confident that I can take care of myself and-"
Alec interrupted him then. "Magnus, I don't think that. You're a normal person, everyone needs someone. If you didn't, I'd be surprised."
Magnus took another deep breath. "I'm sorry; I didn't mean to talk about that." He looked down. "Alec, every little thing about you makes me want to scream out with joy, because... You're mine. And you're better than anything I thought I'd ever deserve, and you still want me. And I've built a life with you now, Alec. I know every little thing there is to know about you, don't I? Even the simplest things. What kind of coffee you want, what music you listen to when you're writing, what you do when you have a day to yourself. I've seen your face light up when you talk to one of your readers. Every little thing you do makes me so happy, and you don't even realise it.
"And when we're fighting, because, we have fought, every couple does that. When we're fighting, I hate myself for upsetting you. I want to do everything for you to take me back. And every single time I'm so afraid of losing you. Maybe you'll realise how amazing you are, and decide you're too good for me, and that's the worst thing I can imagine; losing you.
That's what you do to people, Alec. You're this ray of sunshine in everyone's life, and you don't even think about it. You're just... being you. And that's the best thing in the world to me. You don't try to please everyone, and you don't change yourself for them. You just are this amazing person that showed me I need love and made me fall in love with him."
Magnus let go of Alec's hand and reached into the pocket in his blazer. He pulled out a small box; the kind you'd carry a ... ring in. He got off the bench and got down on one knee in front of Alec. Alec covered his mouth with both his hands, muffled "oh my god"'s escaping him over and over again.
"Alec, I know I might not be the perfect husband. But I love you so much, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I'll do whatever it takes for you to be happy. Anything, Alec, I'll do anything. So, please... Will you marry me?" Magnus opened the ring box and revealed a beautiful silver engagement ring. It was simple, but had three diamonds nestled on it, two light blue and a white in the middle.
Alec took in a breath and lowered his hands. He stared at the ring without saying anything for a while. Eventually the lid was closed again, the clicking sound startling him and he looked at Magnus again.
"I guess that's a no, then. I'm sorry, this was stupid, we can just-"
Alec's hands darted forward and grabbed Magnus hands around the ring box. "No! No, that wasn't a no; I just... I don't know what to say, I'm so ... overwhelmed. Magnus you just proposed to me, I..."
"I wasn't going to talk for that long, I'm sorry. I can just... I can talk about you for hours, Alec. I don't know how to stop. You're everything that matters to me."
Alec had paled visibly very quickly. He looked down at their hands wrapped tightly around the box and bit his lip. "Do you really want to marry me?"
"Of course I do, Alexander."
Alec took a shallow breath. "We've got a problem, then."
Magnus' eyes watered slightly as he looked away and braced himself for being rejected. "And what problem is that?"
Alec couldn't help but laugh as he said, "Alexander Bane sounds absolutely horrific, and so does Magnus Lightwood." Magnus broke into a huge smile and he laughed, reached up to wrap his arms around Alec. His Alec. Magnus kissed him and held him close. Eventually they broke apart, Magnus looking up at him.
"What do you say to some 5am breakfast? If we go now, we can be at your favourite 24-hour café by 5."
Alec smiled and nodded, but pecked Magnus on the lips before allowing him to let go. Then he let Magnus put the engagement ring on his finger and got up so that they could walk to the car and get a nice breakfast.
"There," Magnus said, smiling, before they left. "Now you've got a very important ring on a very important finger."
March 25th, 2 years later
"Magnus Bane and Alexander Gideon Lightwood, today you are surrounded by your friends and family, all of whom have gathered here to witness your marriage and to share in the joy of this special occasion. Today, as you join yourselves in marriage, there is a vast and unknown future stretching out before you, and the story of your life together is still yours to write. The possibilities and potentials of your married life are great; and now fall upon your shoulders the task of choosing your values and making real your dreams. Through your commitment to each other, may you grow and nurture a love that makes both of you better people, a love that continues to give you great joy, and also a passion for living that provides you with energy and patience to face the responsibilities."
Time seemed to slow down around them as Alec looked up at Magnus, standing before him in a classic black suit and a canary yellow tie. Underneath the suit jacket, he had a sparkly black vest over his white button up. His hair was spiked up slightly with a glittery hair styler gel. He wore blue, sparkly nail polish, and when Alec had asked him about it, he had said that he wanted something to match Alec's eyes.
Alec himself was wearing a black suit too, with a golden tie and a golden brooch flower. Alec, not being too fond of too much colour, had not wanted more than that, but Magnus had convinced him to wear a pair of black shoes with golden shoelaces.
They both had huge smiles on their faces, eyes shining with joy, even though watering up slightly. The priest continued.
"Love should have no other desire but to fulfil itself. But if your love and needs must have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night; to know the pain of too much tenderness; to be wounded by your understanding of love; and to bleed willingly and joyfully; to wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; to rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy; to return home at eventide with gratitude; then to sleep with a vision of the beloved in your heart and a song of love on your lips."
Soon enough, it was time for Magnus to start speaking. At first, he just stood there looking at Alec, smiling, with tears in his eyes, but eventually he started speaking. "Alexander, for a long time you were just a dream of mine. Something I could look at all I want, dream of, speak to, touch, but I couldn't quite reach you the way I wanted. I could admire you all I wanted, but that didn't mean I could have you. For a long time I thought you didn't want me. That is, until I was walking to work and saw you at a café with your aunt, Olivia." Alec's eyes widened and his mouth fell slightly open. Magnus had never told him he had seen or heard anything; Alec didn't even know he had been there. But he let Magnus continue. "You were talking about me. And the things you said, Alec... I felt like walking over there and kissing you right then, but I couldn't. You said you weren't sure I really liked you, like I said I did, and your aunt told you I might just be blunter than everyone you'd met before. And she was right, wasn't she?
"Alec, this is a dream come true for me. After a while of us being together, I started thinking about this day, if we would ever end up here. And we did. And I promise you, Alec, I will do whatever it takes for you to be happy. I love you more than I have ever imagined loving anyone. And with this ring, my darling," he said, putting the wedding ring on Alec's finger, "I pledge you my love, now and forever."
Alec smiled up at him with teary eyes. "Before I met you, I had no idea what I wanted. I thought I wanted someone like myself, but I don't. You're the complete opposite, and you're better than everyone I've ever even looked at. I'm happier than I have ever been when I'm with you. I love you so much. Sometimes I don't even think I understand it. I'm sorry I'm not as good with words as you are, and I'm sorry you make me so speechless that I can't describe how amazing you are. I really wanted to. All I can say is that if you would be in my life right until the end, I would be more blessed than I thought I could ever be. And with this ring," he put the ring on Magnus' finger, gripping his own hand tight around Magnus', "I pledge my love, now and forever."
The ceremony continued like a normal ceremony, and ended with them kissing just like every other wedding ceremony – it was just a kiss, but Alec didn't think it was going to feel that special.
The ceremony took place in a rose garden. There were rosebushes surrounding them all around, also making a small path down to a river very close by. They had their wedding photos taken by some guy Isabelle knew, so he went all around the tables during the reception. He took pictures of speeches and everything. Only about half an hour into the reception, Magnus dragged Alec over to a tall, white man with black hair and scary green eyes.
"Alexander, this is my father, Gerald Bane."
Alec stared at the man before him, feel some sort of honour of meeting this man, at last, or fear of what kind of man this was. Magnus had told him that he was a horrible man – but how horrible exactly?
He forced a smile. "Hello." He held out his hand for the older man to take, but when he did his grip was way too tight. It hurt.
"You should know that I don't support this kind of thing. Homosexuality isn't right in any way, and the fact that you got married in a church is even worse. That being said, enjoy your marriage for longer than I enjoyed mine." Then he let go of Alec's hand, leaving the rose garden to go home. He got a cab right out on the street.
Alec looked up at Magnus, sadness clear on his face. His parents had at least come to stay, congratulated them and acted happy, even if they despised homosexuality and same sex marriage. Magnus just shook his head and looked away. "It doesn't matter. He's always been like this. He even blames me for my mother's suicide, and I barely even remember my mother. I just wanted you to meet him. Now I don't suppose we'll have to deal with parents for a while after today."
Alec nodded and bit his lip. He forced a smile as some of his relatives came up to them and wished them luck in the future. He just thanked them and smiled, and then he went with Magnus back to their seats.

That night
Tearing off Alec's boxers, Magnus eliminated the only clothing between them. Leaning down over Alec to kiss him, he gently wrapped his hand around Alec's manhood, jerking gently and making Alec whimper against his lips. He sighed in pleasure over simply pleasuring Alec, prying his lips open with his tongue and gently massaging Alec's tongue with his own. His other hand ran softly over Alec's abs, a part of Alec he would never get tired of running his hands over. Alec took good care of his body with working out and eating healthy.
One of Alec's hands, placed on Magnus' shoulder, began to softly dig into Magnus' skin as he got more and more aroused. Soon he was gripping as tightly as he could, panting into Magnus' mouth, fighting to catch his breath between kisses so they wouldn't have to stop. Magnus gripped him firmer, jerking faster. Alec was ready to almost scream of pleasure; the only thing stopping him was Magnus' lips on his own.
Magnus groaned from the back of his throat as he wasn't getting much attention, but was very aroused himself. On the edge of pleasure, Alec realised Magnus' erection, harder than he'd ever seen it, wasn't even being touched and he reached down, weakly gripping around Magnus' erection, but Magnus stopped jerking Alec and stopped Alec from touching him, and he was pulling away from the kiss. Alec lay there, looking up at him and panting heavily. "Why the hell did you stop?" he asked, loosening his grip on Magnus' shoulders. "I was so close."
"Because your face twisted in pleasure is something I need to see for just a little while longer," Magnus said quietly, getting between Alec's knees. He pulled up Alec's legs so his feet were flat on the bed, his legs bent slightly. He pulled them a bit further apart, closing in on Alec. Neither of them said anything as Magnus got the lubrication from the nightstand, first putting something on his fingers and not touching Alec's or his own erection just yet. He slowly eased a finger into Alec, Alec panting and moaning softly. Soon there were two fingers, then three, slowly pulling out before quickly being thrusted back in. Alec moaned louder with every thrust.
"Oh god," Alec moaned loudly, shutting his eyes, "please, I'm gonna-"
"Oh, no you won't," Magnus said, pulling his fingers out and smearing lube on his erection. He lined himself up, at first only pushing softly. He was all the way in in only a matter of seconds, only having to force very little. This was by no means Alec's first time. Alec cried out in pleasure at the same time as Magnus as he bottomed out.
It didn't take Alec long to be screaming at the top of his lungs. Every thrust had him in an agonizing pleasure, and while he was in so much pleasure he could barely lie still, Magnus was thrusting away, the hardest he could, harder than he ever had when he was with Alec. He had eventually taken a hold of both of Alec's hands, pinning them to the bed with his own hands and putting most of his weight on them. Alec was lying as still as he could.
As Alec screamed again, Magnus leaned down to capture his lips in a sloppy, messy kiss. They were both moaning into each other's mouth Alec on the edge of screaming. After a bit, Alec pulled his head back, still with closed eyes, face twisted in pleasure. "I'm gonna- oh God, Magnus- I'll-" And before he could continue any further, they both came almost at the same time. Alec with a scream, and Magnus with a deep groan. Magnus collapsed onto his back on the bed, looking up at the ceiling, dizziness almost overpowering him. The only sound in the room was their loud panting.
"I love you," Alec said, staring up in the ceiling as well. He couldn't believe they were actually married now. They had talked about it for two years now, and he had known the date for the most part of those years, but God, it felt so surreal.
"I love you too."
March 30th
"Welcome to Hotel Habana Libre, Mr. Bane and Mr. Lightwood. We have prepared the honey moon suite for you, so you can leave your luggage with this man, and I will have someone come and take you to your room, alright?"
Magnus smiled and thanked the woman, Rachel, behind the reception desk. He and Alec walked a little away and looked around the lobby. In the middle was a huge spiral staircase, leading up to the floors above them. It ended on the fifth floor, even though there were many more floors than that – if you wanted higher up, you would have to take the lifts.
On the bottom floor, in the lobby, there was a sort of pond in the middle of the staircase. There were wish swimming around in the shallow water and there were small fountains with lights in them, so the water that came from them would be coloured. In the pond itself there were normal yellow lights. Around the pond were several small café tables, two chairs by each table. From the banister hang fake green leaves and thin branches, giving the entire area an exotic feel and beauty.
Alec smiled up at Magnus. "I'm so glad we went here. It's beautiful." Magnus looked at him and smiled.
"I'm glad you like it. Wait till you see the rooms, they're gorgeous. There were pictures on their website."
After a few moments, they were approached by a young man, Adrian, who led them to the elevator and took them to the very top floor – the 25th and to the room by the end of the hall. As Magnus tipped Adrian, Alec slid in the key card and opened the door. For a moment he just stared. This was the largest hotel room he had ever been in and it was absolutely stunning. Magnus came from behind and wrapped his arms around his waist, leaving butterfly kisses on his neck.
Alec smiled and looked at Magnus over his shoulder. "The door isn't even closed yet, and I haven't seen the room yet."
Magnus' eyes were full of affection as he looked up into Alec's eyes. "I know. It's just so hard to stay away from my husband."
Alec's smile widened and he turned around to look up at Magnus, trailing a light pattern over his chest with his hand. "How about we take a look around the place, and then we'll do whatever comes to mind?"
Magnus smirked and let him go; pulling him inside and letting the door slam shut on its own. He took the key card from Alec and put it on the nightstand, walked back to Alec and taking his hand. Firstly he pulled him through a small hallway where there was a large wardrobe area on one side, and a granite counter top with two sinks and a huge mirror on the other. Through there was a door to the bathroom, which had a big bathtub and a separate shower. The tub was big enough for both of them to fit into without any trouble.
Then he dragged him out to where they began, by the door, where there was no hallway, but an opening into the sleeping area. There were two king sized beds pushed together to form a huge bed with an ottoman by the foot of the bed. The linen was all red. On the opposite wall of the beds were a big TV and a desk. The first thing Alec thought was that he could get some writing done while they were here, but Magnus probably wouldn't let him. They were on their honeymoon, but Alec couldn't help but think it would be a golden opportunity to write about something in Cuba while they were actually there.
Next they turned towards what should have been a wall. But it wasn't. It was an entire glass wall, with a door in the middle that led out to a terrace with a table and two chairs like the ones in the lobby. Magnus didn't neglect telling Alec about the gym they had at the hotel, so that he could still get his workout done while they were there.
There was the most magnificent view over Havana from there. You could see out to the sea in the distance, and at night the city would light up and just be alive. It was the most beautiful view he had ever seen, even more so than the one they had at home. He sighed and smiled.
"This is perfect, Mags. You were right about this place being perfect for our honeymoon."
"I know. Now come over here and kiss me."
April 4th
Alec turned on the TV and found CNN news. He just wanted to watch something in English instead of Spanish, because he barely understood any Spanish at all and there was no way he was joining Magnus at the outdoor pool. Now he was just lying on one side of the bed, planning to watch TV all day.
"Oh come on, Allie! It won't be that bad."
"Tell me that again when you've got sunburn because your husband dragged you out before you got any sunscreen on." Alec said, running his hand through the drawer in the nightstand to find the After Sun they had brought with them. Magnus smirked and got onto the bed beside him, kissing his cheek lovingly.
"I love it when you call me your husband."
Alec couldn't help but smile and look at Magnus. "I love to call you my husband," he said just as he pulled the bottle of After Sun out of the drawer. "Will you rub this on my back before you go?" Magnus nodded and was handed the After Sun. Alec laid down on his stomach, having already taken off his shirt, and Magnus squeezed some of the After Sun into his hand and then putting the bottle down on the nightstand. Then he gently began massaging Alec's back and rubbing in the cooling cream. Alec gave a relieved sigh as some of the pain from the sunburn was taken away.
"Don't make sounds like that, I won't be able to go swimming."
Alec giggled softly. "You're too sweet, Maggie."
"Sweet isn't the word I'd use." Magnus pressed a bit harder, but because of the After Sun it didn't hurt, it only made Alec give another sigh of relief and satisfaction.
"Mags, I have sunburn. Not today."
"You're going to deny me that body?"
"For the time being, yes-" he was interrupted when Magnus stopped rubbing in the After Sun. "No, don't stop! Being massaged was so nice."
Magnus' hands resumed the massaging, but on Alec's legs this time. Slowly, gently, working their way further up. "Come on, you want it too."
"You know I do."
"Then why fight it?"
Alec's breathing slowed a bit by every second. "Because I have a sunburn, and I'm tired from my workout yesterday, plus you haven't given me time to recover for more than a week now. As sexy as you are, every now and then I need a day or two off."
Magnus said something, but Alec didn't hear. He had fallen asleep and was soon snoring lightly.
November 12th, next year
"Alright, well, you can go and meet the kids now, if you would like to. They're all either in the lunch room or outside, so they should be quite easy to find. If you find someone you like, we can bring them in for a personal interview so you can get to know them better."
Alec and Magnus got out of the chairs, smiling at her and thanking her, and left the room. At first they went outside, where kids were running all around the playground. It seemed a bit chaotic, but the kids would no doubt be used to adults coming and going around them.
"Is it overwhelming?"
Alec nodded a bit. "A little."
"Do you want to sit down and watch them a bit at first?"
Alec nodded a bit, and they went over to sit on a bench. There were kids in all ages there, the oldest one looking about 17, the youngest looking about 3. There were some of the kids around 7 or 8 picking on one of the youngest kids, looking about 3 or 4.
"What are they doing? They can't do that!" Alec exclaimed, standing up. Before Magnus even got a chance to answer, Alec had left and gone to pick up the little boy. By the time Magnus got over there, Alec had told off the older kids, sending them away. He had the young boy in his arms, and the boy was crying. Alec got out his keys, dangling them a little bit away from the boy's face. The boy lit up in a grin, reaching out for the keys and playing with them when Alec handed them to him. Alec looked up at Magnus and smiled, and then he looked back at the boy. "His name's Lewis."
Magnus could immediately see that Alec had made a decision. He liked this boy, and so did Magnus so far. He seemed to be pretty easy to cheer up when he was crying too. Magnus smiled. Now Lewis had given up the keys, Alec taking them and putting them in his pocket, and he was already asleep. His head was leaning against Alec's chest, his one arm across Alec's chest like a tiny hug. Alec looked up at Magnus. "I think he likes you," Magnus said, smiling.
Alec laughed quietly. "I like him, too. Do you like him?"
Magnus nodded. "Have you made a decision?"
Alec smiled, took at look at Lewis, and nodded. He already loved this boy.
It hadn't taken long to get the paperwork done. The woman they had been talking to earlier said that even though they were glad they wanted to adopt Lewis; they should know that his parents had died only a few days before and he had only gotten there after that. They had died in a plane crash, and it wouldn't be unusual if he had a fear of flying now or later on.
August 15th, 3 years later
"I can't believe he's starting school, Magnus," Alec said, smiling. He had just put Lewis to bed and read him a goodnight story, tugging him in. He sat down in the arm chair next to Magnus'.
"I can't believe you won't be here for it," Magnus said, looking up at him. Alec's smile fell immediately and he looked away. He didn't want to miss it, but he had to go back to meet with his publisher, and there was a photo shoot too. They wanted make one of those bus stop ads, and for that they needed a picture of him, so they had organized a photo shoot. Church jumped up into his laps, and lay down, immediately purring. Alec decided to pet him, and running his hand over his blue fur, he looked at Magnus.
"I know. But my publisher said it had to be tomorrow, and I have to leave early. They hired some fancy photographer to take the pictures, so it can't be rescheduled either. But I'll be back tomorrow night, I hope. You can handle it though, right? Have him call me from your phone when you pick him up from school. I want to hear all about it as soon as possible."
Magnus nodded, assuring him that he would have Lewis call him after school. Alec smiled, sighed, and got into his office to check out the emails he had gotten for his new book – there was a sketch for a cover and some technical stuff about the photo shoot.
August 16th
When Alec heard his phone ring from the other end of the room, he had to call a break, even if he might not be entitled to. "It's my son's first day of school and he promised to call me when he got home, so I have to answer it," he said, apologizing to the photographer, and went over to answer the phone.
"Hi daddy," Lewis said on the other end. He sounded happy.
"Hey," Alec said. "Did you have a good first day?" He could hear the ruffling of Lewis' curled hair as he either shook his head or nodded.
"Yes daddy! Papa took me inside and he was there for the first bit, and then all the daddies and mommies had to leave, and then we had to play together in groups," Lewis told. He explained how the whole day had gone, Alec only interrupting a few times to ask a question, and said "yeah", "really?", and things like that to make sure Lewis knew he was still there.
Once Lewis was done telling, the photographer had motioned towards the clock three times already. Alec sighed. "I have to go now, Lewie, but tell papa I'll be home tomorrow morning, alright? And I'll see you then, too, if I get home before you leave for school."
They said their goodbyes, and Alec went back to the photo shoot. He hated missing Lewis' first day of school, but there wasn't much to do about it. He just couldn't help thinking about what else he'd miss.
The next day
Walking into the apartment, Alec almost tripped over a few of Lewis' toys. There was a doll and a stuffed teddy bear lying on the floor, and Alec wondered how Magnus had managed to close the door after them without nudging the toys farther away from the door. He picked up the two toys, walking in and putting them in Lewis' room.
Lewis' room had light blue walls, that Magnus had insisted painting in that colour. Lewis didn't seem like he cared that much about it, but he had never said he wanted something else, so they never repainted it. In a nook in the wall was Lewis' bed with black linen that Lewis had picked out himself. Alec and Magnus had suggested something that suited a little boy, or even a girl, better, but Lewis had been set on the black. On the opposite wall there was a bookshelf they used for toys instead of books. Under the window was a desk for Lewis to sit and draw or do his homework when he got a bit older.
Putting the toys on the shelf, he exited the room. He had arrived home only a short while after Magnus and Lewis had left, so he was alone for now. He decided to lie on the couch and watch some TV until Magnus got back – Magnus didn't have work that week. He got onto the couch in the living room, lying down on his side, and picked up the remote from the TV, pressing the on button.
Nothing good was on though, so he decided to watch a re-run of an old season of Project Runway. Magnus had made him watch it before, and even though he would never admit it, he enjoyed it. He didn't hate it as much as he thought he would. Some of the clothes were even nice.
After a while, he got bored, but he had been up all night, so he didn't have much energy to do anything. So he just turned around and fell asleep.
Unlocking the door and pushing it open with a bag of groceries in his hand, Magnus walked in. He heard that the TV was on, and figured he had forgotten to turn it off before they had left that morning. First off he went to put away the groceries in the kitchen, but then he heard a light snore in the living room. He had slept by the side of that snoring for years, he would recognize it anywhere. His face lit up in a smile, and he quickly put away the rest of the groceries, and then he went into the living room to see Alec sleeping on the couch.
He walked over to Alec, softly pulling at his shoulder, shaking him, and watched as Alec's eyes blinked open and looked up at him. Alec smiled up at him, leaned up to give him a short kiss, and then sat up properly in the couch, rubbing his eyes. Magnus sat down next to him.
"You taste like sleep. When did you get home, babe?" Magnus asked, wrapping his arm around Alec's shoulder and placing his other hand at Alec's chin, softly pulling so that Alec would look at him. Alec glanced at the clock hanging on the wall.
"About an hour ago, I think. Where have you been?"
"Just out getting the groceries. I missed you."
Alec smiled and leaned in to kiss him again, this time a little longer. "I missed you too. How was Lewis this morning?"
"Good. He couldn't wait to go back to school. That'll change soon enough, though."
Alec breathed out, smiling and nodding. "I missed him. What time does he get off school?"
"We'll go pick him up at around 1pm if you wanna come."
"Sure. What do you wanna do until then?"
"I think I've got an idea, lover," Magnus said quietly and leaned in, capturing his lips again.
Stepping out of the car, Alec looked around. The school building and schoolyard looking like every other; a big red-brick building and a schoolyard with asphalt and a playground. It wasn't quite 1pm yet, so there was still a little while before Lewis would be coming outside, and Magnus had told Lewis to meet him there.
Leaning against the car, Alec looked up at the blue sky, and sighed. He had never been patient, even though he tried his best. Magnus got out of the car on the other side and walked around to stand next to him. He looked at the school building and back at Alec. "He missed you last night, too. He said you cook a lot better than I do, which is a total lie."
Alec smiled and looked at him. "Oh, is it really? Remember that time you burned the water you needed for spaghetti? How do you burn water, Mags?" Magnus stuck out his tongue at him and laughed.
"It wasn't my fault! You were being adorable, so what was I going to do? Let you just sit there and tempt me while I cooked? That wouldn't be fair!"
Alec laughed and shook his head and looked at the school building again. The doors were opening and a ton of kids were running out in one big group. Before Alec knew it, Lewis was running towards him, and when he got there, he hugged him tightly. Alec smiled and picked him up; like he had the first time they had met.
"Hey pal," Alec said, grinning. "Did you miss me?"
Lewis' arms were flung around Alec's neck within seconds, hands clasped together behind his neck, and he hugged him. Alec smiled and hugged him again. "A lot, daddy!"
"Well, let's go home, then," Alec said, and carried Lewis to the door to the backseat, opened it, and sat Lewis inside. "Give me your back pack; I'll put it in the trunk." Lewis handed him the back pack, and put on the seatbelt after Alec had closed the door.
In the meantime, Magnus had gotten into the driver's seat, starting up the car. Lewis looked at him in the rear-view mirror, and Magnus looked at him too. "I know. Don't tell him. We'll talk later," Magnus said, looking into Lewis' eyes, right before Alec opened the door on the passenger side and got in. Both Magnus and Alec put on their seatbelt, and they drove home.
Later that night
After Alec had gone into his office to work, Magnus had walked into Lewis' room. As he opened the door, Lewis looked up at him and put down his toy. He had been playing with Church and his toys, and Church meowed and strutted out the door. Lewis would usually be sitting in the living room, but the last few months he had stayed in his room.
Walking in, Magnus closed the door behind him and sat down on the bed. Lewis got up and sat down on the chair by the desk, turning it to face Magnus. Magnus looked at him.
"What did they say?"
Lewis looked down. "Johnny said his mom told him he couldn't talk to me because you and daddy are fags."
Magnus' lips became a thin line and he looked at Lewis. He sighed. "Lew, listen to me. I know you don't understand that word – "fag" – but I don't want you using it. It's an insult, and I don't understand how Johnny's mother could even use that word around her son, but that doesn't matter now. Did you find anyone to talk to at all today?"
Lewis nodded slowly. "There was a girl named Jade. She told me to come play with her and some of the other girls."
Magnus nodded. "Well, did you have fun?" He waited for Lewis to nod. "How about you stick with her for a little while? The most important thing is that you have someone to play with, and if you had fun, that's good. Don't let Johnny and the other guys bug you, just come talk to me about it, alright?"
Lewis nodded again, and Magnus then decided to change the subject. He got some of Lewis' toys and attempted cheering up Lewis by playing a bit with some of his toys with him. Eventually, they had both forgotten all about school.
May 19th, 2 years later
"Why don't we ever go with daddy when he goes somewhere to work?" Lewis asked, taking a bite of his toast. It was Sunday, around 10am, and Magnus had only just gotten home from driving Alec to the airport. It was a sort of tradition for them – every time Alec would go somewhere, Magnus would drive him to the airport, and they would stand there kissing and hugging each other for about half an hour before Magnus even thought about letting him go, if even then. That also meant they always had to leave a lot earlier though, but Magnus didn't care.
"You don't like flying, so we don't. Besides, he has to work most of the time, so he won't have much time to spend with us, anyway," Magnus answered, looking in the paper. One of the models he knew, Camille, had told him one of Alec's books had been reviewed in the paper, so he wanted to check it out. "He'll be home tomorrow, anyway, so it's not that long. I do miss him though," he added quietly.
"I'd like to travel like daddy. Can't we go on a vacation this year?"
Magnus looked up at him. "We go on a vacation every year."
Lewis looked down into his toast. "I want to do something else than camping sometimes, too."
Magnus sighed and looked into the paper. "We'll talk about it for next year, Lew."
Lewis nodded, but Magnus didn't notice. He had finally found the review and he was already reading. It was a good review, giving Alec's book 4 out of 5 stars and mentioning a few things they liked or didn't like in particular, even though there were more of the former. Smiling, Magnus put the paper down. He would show it to Alec as soon as he got home the next day.
The next day
Pacing back and forth in the living room, Magnus dialled Isabelle's number and pressed the call-button. Lewis was sitting on the floor, playing with Church, and the TV was on some of Lewis' favourite cartoons.
Alec should have been home now. He always called Magnus when he got to the airport at first, and he had done that this morning, too, but he should have been home 6 hours ago, and Magnus was worried. Isabelle picked up on the fourth ring, sounding like she had been crying.
"Magnus," she sobbed, "I'm-"
Magnus interrupted her immediately. He didn't have time for this. "Izzy, have you heard from Alec? He should've been home hours ago, but I haven't heard from him since this morning. Please tell me you've heard from him."
He could hear Isabelle sucking in a sharp breath and releasing it before she answered. "No one called you?"
Magnus froze. "Called me about what?"
"Is Lewis in the room with you?" she asked, and waited for him to confirm. Right after he did she spoke again. "Get out of the room, or get him out."
Magnus left the living room and went into Alec's office. He sat down in the couch, which smelled faintly like the Sandalwood body wash they both used. He breathed in, letting the soft scent of Alec overwhelm him and calm him down a bit. "I'm in the office. Now what is it?"
He could hear Isabelle's voice cracking slightly, even though she tried to hide it, when she began speaking again. "You need to come here as soon as possible. I know Lewis doesn't like flying, and he's going to hate it even more, but you need to be here. Alec- Alec's plane crashed, Magnus."
Magnus felt like all the air was sucked from his lungs in a second. He couldn't breathe, his hand grabbed the phone firmer as he attempted to breathe while still listening to what Isabelle was saying, but he couldn't. He tuned her out as he tried to suck in a huge breathe, and she quieted down, letting it sink in. As soon as he could breathe again, he realised he was crying. He never cried, but if Alec was- ... He couldn't even end the sentence in his head. So instead he said, "what... what happened to him? Is he okay?"
"He's... Magnus, he's gone. Most of his face was screwed up, and they called me to get him identified. His eyes were so dead, Magnus, fuck! His eyes were the only reason I knew it was him. His whole body was smashed, and most of his face, but his eyes were still that hauntingly blue colour, but they were so empty. There was no spark in them, nothing! Shit, I don't know what to do with myself. Magnus, are you there? Are you okay?"
Magnus felt like there were a thousand knives in his chest. He couldn't breathe, the sobs were wrecking his body, and his chest felt like it was cramping with every sob. He couldn't speak. He hands clenched and unclenched unwillingly, the phone dropping to the floor. Magnus put his face in his hands, tried to stop crying. If Lewis sees you like this- Just as he thought it, the door creaked as it was being opened. Magnus looked up to see Lewis stand in the door, looking at him with big eyes.
"What's wrong, Papa? Did you talk to Daddy?"
Another sob escaped Magnus as he hid his face in his hands again. He didn't want to cry in front of Lewis. He wanted Lewis to believe he was a strong superhero that no one could touch, and now Lewis would think he would cry over everything. And from now on, he guessed everything that had anything to do with Alec would make him cry.
Without Magnus noticing, Lewis had walked over to him, and now he swung his arms around Magnus and hugged him. Magnus took in a huge breathe, trying to calm himself, but it only resulted in another wave of painful tears and sobs. Lewis hugged him tighter. "Don't cry, Papa! Daddy will cheer you up when he gets home!"
Magnus almost choked as he said, "Daddy's not coming home, Lewie. Daddy's gone."
Lewis pulled back with big, sad eyes and looked at Magnus with his head slightly to one side. "Where has daddy gone?"
Magnus looked at him. "Daddy's gone back to heaven with all the other angels."
A few days later
As Alec's casket was carried out and put in the back of the funeral carriage, Magnus could barely look. He tried his best not to cry, but a few tears had escaped him anyway. He was trying to be strong for Lewis, who didn't quite understand what had happened and why Alec wouldn't be around anymore.
Alec had told him long ago that he wanted to be cremated, so of course Magnus was doing that, even thought it felt wrong that he wouldn't have a proper grave. Of course there would be a grave and a gravestone, but in the earth it wouldn't be Alec, it would be a jar of ashes, and Magnus couldn't quite wrap his head around that.
Isabelle was a sobbing mess, and even Jace had shed a few tears. Simon was attempting to cheer up Isabelle as they drove Alec away, but it wasn't working. Magnus could see Clary being concerned about Jace, but they all knew that pointing something out while they were around everyone else wasn't a good idea, so she would probably say something when they got home.
Magnus had always known that one of them would die first, that's the way life works. But he hadn't expected to lose his husband this soon, and he wasn't sure what to do anymore. Alec had only been 34, and he had had many good years ahead of him. But not anymore.
For many years to come, whenever Magnus got sad about Alec's death all over again, he would go into what once had been Alec's office. They hadn't changed it at all – Alec's laptop was even still standing on the desk. The sandalwood scent still hung in the furniture, but after a while Magnus figured it had changed to be his sandalwood scent instead of Alec's.
Sometimes, Magnus had cried himself asleep on Alec's couch, and he would wake up smelling the sandalwood and he would think, for just a moment, that Alec wasn't dead after all. But then reality came crashing down around him, forcing him to tear up and cry all over again.
And for each and every time Magnus cried, Lewis would pretend he didn't see, that he couldn't hear him through the wall at night, and he would pretend he was strong, for Magnus' sake. He didn't want to burden Magnus with him crying over Alec when Magnus could barely stop crying himself.
Magnus really tried being strong for him. He took him camping every year like they used to, so that they could both stay off airplanes, he would attempt to hold a decent birthday party for him every year, and he would do his best to act like he was in a good mood when he was around him.
It just wasn't quite as easy without his Alec by his side.
AN: So that last part was kinda intense. Sorry.
But that ends this story! I hope you enjoyed it, and thank you guys for all the lovely reviews and follows and favorites, it means the world to me!
Someone talked about a sequel (I'm sorry, I don't remember your username), but this epilogue is exactly so that I wouldn't have to do a sequel for this. I don't think I could make it as interesting as this one, to be honest, so I think it's better to stop. You gotta know when to stop.
Also, I'm sorry this took a while to get out, but as you can see, it's really long, so I hope that's okay. Like seriously, I think above 13k words make up for it, don't you?
And I think that's all I have to say, actually. Thanks for sticking with me. If there's any questions or anything, regarding this story or literally everything, send me a message on here OR my tumblr (sparklesbeforeducks) on anonymous if you want, or not, it doesn't matter. I'm here for anyone, so just send me a message any time, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible!
Once again, I hope you enjoyed this story!
Lea
