Author's Note: Could it be? An update? Sorry for taking so long. I just can't make myself happy with this chapter. Oh well. By the way, I made an ask blog for Jasmine. [ .com] Come ask any questions you have about her!
Making their way to the other side of the school, Jasmine pulled open the window, and they crawled inside. They went across the hall to the other room, which wasn't a normal classroom. It was a lab room, with four lab tables complete with sinks and gas nozzles. Jasmine turned on the lights, and under the florescent lighting, she noticed a red mark on Edward's forehead. She had to stop herself from snickering; he must have sat up a bit too quickly when he woke up underneath that dock.
Jasmine sat on the edge of one of the tables, and watched the other rogues pull off their coats, masks, and hats, with the exception of Jervis; he kept his top hat on. She stared at Jonathan, pondering on what exactly to do about him.
She understood that he could have abandoned her back there, but why didn't he? All three of them could have kept walking, and left her to deal with Bullock. Does that mean she could trust him now? Not likely. Could she trust any of them? No.
Well… That was unfair; maybe she could trust them… Either way, she figured she could rig the place with traps later, after they leave. For right now, she would just have to take some risks. "You guys can crash here I suppose, for a couple days." "Thank you, now was that so hard?" Edward responded. Jasmine rolled her eyes.
The three rouges pulled themselves onto the lab tables, since there were no chairs to be seen. Edward and Jonathan sat on the table opposite Jasmine, while Jervis sat cross-legged next to her. A strange sort of awkwardness settled overtop the group, but Jasmine couldn't pinpoint the cause. "If you a question you want to ask, fire away."
"Are you actually going to answer? Or just change the subject?" Edward asked.
"We'll see, won't we?"
"Are you a vampire?" Jervis asked the first question.
"In the sense that I drink blood? Yes. In the sense that I can't go out in the sun and I can't see myself in a mirror? No."
"But why do you drink it?" Edward asked next.
Jasmine shrugged, "Why do you like riddles so much? Why does Scarecrow like fear so much?"
"Point taken," Edward nodded.
Then Jervis piped up, "I should make some tea!" He jumped off the table and ran out of the room without another word.
"You do that," Jasmine muttered.
Edward spoke up, "By the way, would you care to explain why you left me under a dock?"
"Well, I couldn't drag you across the city now could I? I could've just left your ass at Arkham, now that I think about it." Jasmine answered. Causing Edward to give he a nasty look.
"You should wash your face, you know." Jonathan said flatly.
Jasmine looked at the professor for a second, and furrowed her eyebrows, then remembered her mouth was probably still covered in blood. "Oh, right," She turned a bit, and twisted the knob on the faucet. She leaned back and let the water run over her mouth and wiped off the blood with her hand. She made sure to wash off the blood off her fingers as well, and then turned off the water.
"There's no tea bags…" Jervis had his head poked through the door.
"Hmm, shame, I'll go get some tomorrow, 'kay?"Lady Luck offered. Jervis smiled.
She had trouble sleeping that night. She couldn't calm down, or relax, every time she'd get close to drifting off, she'd hear footsteps in the hallway. Or, at least she thought she did. The possibility of who they could belong to filled her mind. She thought it might be batman, the police, even Bolton became a possibility. 'Wait, I killed him, didn't I? He's dead... I know he is... But what if he isn't? What if he found me?' The longer she laid there, the more insane her imagining became, 'What if it's Nicholas?! No, no, no... He's dead, remember? Dead and gone... What's left is in Georgia... But what if he somehow gets here?!'
She quickly sat up, looking at the door, than Edward, who was sleeping in the bed next to Jasmine's. The girl really didn't want him sleeping in the same room as her, but he saw the bed, and asked. The thought of him doing something while she was asleep caused her to break out in a cold sweat. She got up, and walked to the door, the room was suddenly feeling very stuffy to her.
She went outside, and got back onto the roof tops. She felt the most free here, and the safest. It wasn't long before she was on top of some of the tallest skyscrapers in Gotham. Jasmine attempted to jump to the next one, but fell short. fortunately, she managed to grab hold of the fire escape, and pull herself up. When she stood at the top she felt someone push her, and she toppled over the side. She managed to look up and see the shadowy figure of Batman staring at her.
"Fuck!" Jasmine had fallen of and slammed head first into the cold tiles. She was still covered in sweat from her nightmare. She stood up, and saw Edward was still sound asleep, he was only his white shirt, and boxers which were adorned with green question marks. She climbed up, and got her jacket out of her gym bag, some money out of the briefcase, and went out of the nurse's station, closing the door behind her.
She went to the window and slipped on her jacket, then crawled out the window. The sun was setting now, how long was she asleep? People were to busy trying to make it home, they wouldn't bother checking some random girl's face that was partly covered by her hood. She wanted to go to the store for a few things.
Jasmine wasn't sure where she was going, nor did she know where any stores were, and she really didn't like walking on the sidewalk, it was kind of boring. However, it attracted a lot less attention than if she was running across the roof tops like a madwoman.
Lady Luck saw what looked like a small grocery store, and she took the risk and went inside. She grabbed hair gel for herself, tea bags for Jervis, a bag of apples to eat, and a 5 cent newspaper. She got into line, and started to think about what to do that night. Her lips spread out into a sick smile when the obvious came to mind. The man in front of her gave her a strange look at the girl smiling at the floor.
Her face was back to a normal blank, trying to avoid eye contact with the young cashier. He looked about her age. She paid for things with a 10, and stuffed the change into her pocket. She headed out the door, and back up the street towards her hideout, when she heard someone calling for her. She glanced back ans saw the cashier. "Shit, he recognised me." Jasmine ran and tried to hide in alley, but he found her anyway.
"Hey," he spoke, "What's your name?"
"My name?" Jamsine quickly tried to come up with something. "Anne... Anne Bell."
"Wow, you must be from the south." Jasmine glared at him, and he laughed. "I'm just joking, I was wondering if you like to go out some time."
Jasmine took a step back, surprised. "What!?"
"Here, here's my number, call me sometime." he handed her a piece of paper which already had his number on it.
Jasmine stood in the alley dumbfounded long after he had left. But eventually came back to her senses. she looked at the number, and shoved in into her hoodie pouch. She walked back onto the side walk, and continued on, until she figured wandering around at night might make her a target of a certain vigilante, so she decided to head back into the alleyways. She was walking between the backs of several buildings, when she heard a lot of commotion up ahead, a loud clang of metal, like something hitting a dumpster. Jasmine ran and peeked around the corner, and saw a gruesome site. It was Zsasz, and some woman, but she was dead, he had slit her throat. Jasmine admired the red blood running down her white blouse.
Lady Luck watched as Victor took his large knife and cut a new mark on his skin, completing another set of 5 tallys. Jasmine licked her lips, but decided it may not be a good idea to try and approach the psycho killer in the middle of his work, especially since she forgot to grab her gun when she left her hide out. She backed up, and darted out the alley back onto the street, parallel to the one she was on earlier, and kept her eyes and ears open.
"Now it's rude to walk away and not say 'hello,'" A voice from behind her said. Her eyes went wide, and she turn her head to look, and saw him standing there. Even if she could outrun him, what if he followed back to her hide out? She was stuck, she had to find a way to talk through this... If he was even planning to hurt her.
"Oh, um, I'm sorry, h-hello?" She stuttered out.
"You wouldn't happen to be going to rat me out, now would you?"
Jasmine blinked a few time. "Are you out of your mind? The cops are after me too."
He tilted his head, "Oh, now I remember, you're that girl in the Arkham van with me."
Jasmine nodded quickly, "Yeah, that was me."
She couldn't help it when her eyes were drawn to the blood still leaking out of his cut. She licked her lips before saying, "Well, it was nice seeing you again, but I got to go. Now." She turned on her heel and darted as fast as she could back to her hideout, one part of her hoped he didn't follow her back. But another, blood thirsty part hoped he did.
She went into the lab room, flicked on the light and sat the stuff down on the table. She leaned and rested her forehead in her hands, thinking. She was safe now, or at least she tried to tell herself that. "I was wondering were you wandered off to." She jumped a bit, and looked, and saw Professor Crane, standing beside the lab table, hands behind his back.
"Oh, it's you." She took a deep breath, and turned and leaned back on the table. "I went and got a few things from the store." She explained.
He looked at the bags, and back to her, "Why did you help me? Back at the Asylum?"
"Why did you help me with that pig back there?"
"Stop avoiding my questions," He ordered with a tone that reminded her of a teacher.
"Well..." She stared at the floor, as if the answer was there. "I figured, we gotta look after each other, since no one else will..." She looked back up at him.
He slowly shook his head, "That's not it, is it?"
"What do you mean?" She asked him, confused. He brought both hands in front of him, and showed the black, leather book in his hands.
She stared at it for a few seconds before realizing just what it was, her journal, she'd had it for years, she hadn't written in it every single day, but only when she felt it was necessary to get her thoughts down. Her mouth fell open, and a few seconds later, she snatched it from his hands. He didn't bother trying to stop her, he already looked though it.
"interesting read," He said, almost mockingly.
"Oh, fuck off," She growled, clutching the book to her chest.
"You know, most girls glue pictures of the favorite rock stars in the diarys, not their favorite serial killers."
"Yeah, well," She looked and the journal and slowly opened it, and it landed on a page that had an newspaper article glued to the left side, it was about Jonathan's trail, and his sentence to Arkham. It didn't say much about his capture however, which puzzled her. The right side her thoughts, and several angry words about it. There was even a little scarecrow doodle on the top right corner of the page. "You are more interesting than Syd Barrett," She smiled.
"Tell me," Jonathan tilted his head, "You talked about killing animals in some entries, but they weren't really animals, now were they?"
"No, because I knew better than to write, 'I killed my brother,"
"What did you call him?"
"He was the snake."
"The birds?"
"The parrot, the crow, the mockingbird, and the blue jay, those were all girls that were my so-called "friends"." She spat out the last word, as if it had a bitter taste.
"And the dove?" He asked.
Jasmines eyes widened for a second, and she looked down at the journal again. She flipped to a page close to the front which had a picture of 2 little girls smiling, one was blond, the other was a brunette with braces. "Jessica," Jasmine mumbled.
"She died in the bus accident?"
Jasmine nodded, unsure why he was asking, he must have known. "Along with everyone else," She added.
"If you didn't kill her, then why disguise her name?"
"I do that with everyone, I think of an animal that matches them best, just in case someone find that book... like you did," She looked back up at him with a blank expression.
"Hello everyone!" Edward strolled into the room fully dressed with the exception of his hat, mask and coat.
Jasmine slammed her journal shut, "Hey, Edward." Jonathan didn't say anything.
"Toss me an apple, would you?" Edward asked. Jasmine put the book down on the table, pulled the fruit out of the bag, and tossed it to her new roommate. It was then Jervis entered with a tray with a tea set.
"Where did you get a tea set?" Edward lifted his eyebrow as he asked.
"I went back to my old hideout," He responded. Edward picked up a cup, and poured tea into it. The vampire picked up the box of tea bags she bought, felling it had been a waste to buy it. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know you went and got some. I really didn't want to trouble you with it." Jervis apologised.
"Don't worry," She put the box down, "I needed some air." Edward added a single cube of sugar to his tea, while Jervis added 3 to his, and Jon took his without any sugar. Jasmine took her's last. However, before she could grab the tea-pot, Jervis moved it away from her, setting it on the table opposite her. "Hey!"
"Would you like a little more tea?" Jervis asked. It took the girl a moment to realize he was acting out part of the tea party scene, and she couldn't help but join in.
"Well, I haven't had any yet, so can't very well take more."
"Ah, you mean you can't very well take less!" He turned and picked up the pot, and poured her some, "You can always take more than nothing!"
Jasmine took a sip, after added 2 cubes of sugar, she was parched from running, so she was very grateful. Jonathan put down his tea and snatched the newspaper from the table, scanning over the pages. "What are you looking for?" Jervis questioned.
"An... opportunity..." He answered.
"Like what?" Jasmine asked.
The doctor didn't answer for several seconds, until he spotted something of interest. "There's a banquet going to be held at Surh Complex on Saturday..."
"For what?" Edward raised an eyebrow.
"For the return of one of Gotham's socialites."
"Can anyone come?" The question tumbled out of Jasmine's mouth before she realized.
"I doubt they'd let people like us just stroll in," Edward told her.
"That's rude."
"Yes Jasmine, it's very rude... Perhaps we should let them know that." The girl blinked at the professor's first use of her first name. "It would be a good way to test out my new toxin... and we could all use the money that will be there."
"But what if Batman shows up?" Jasmine asked.
"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when." Edward responded
"What if we created a distraction?" Jasmine put her cup down, having finished off her tea.
"What did you have in mind?" The professor inquired.
"Well... We could created a fake crime, something bigger than a banquet... Like maybe holding the mayor hostage?" Jasmine spoke, unsure how the others would respond to the idea.
Edward furrowed his eyebrows, and looked at the ceiling, before speaking, "That might just work actually. With your luck, and my genius planning, anyway."
"Alright, now we must work out the details!" The Mad Hatter said, with some amount of excitement in his voice.
