Enjoy!
Blaine looked around the gymnasium. There were tables and booths everywhere for the different clubs and organizations he could join. Blaine walked passed all of the sports booths. Despite what his dad wanted, Blaine had never been able to get into sports and love it like his dad did.
Instead, Blaine headed toward the back of the gym to see what other clubs the school offered. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do, but there had to be something at this school that at least sounded somewhat exciting. Chess Club and the Future Business Leaders of America didn't catch Blaine's attention and neither did any of the foreign language clubs.
Blaine was just giving out hope when he saw one booth he hadn't seen yet. Come join the Westerville Show Choir, the banner said. Blaine was intrigued. He had always been singing and dancing throughout his room, much to his parent's annoyance. Maybe this club could be interesting.
After talking with one of the members, Blaine decided that this was definitely the club he wanted to join. There was no question about it. There were only two things standing in the way of joining the club. First he had to get his father to fill out a form saying that Blaine would be allowed to participate. Second, there was a fee for participation. That was going to be a little bit harder, but he was sure he would be able to work something out.
Blaine quietly stood outside of his father's office, trying to build up the courage to ask him if he could participate in the school's show choir. He honestly didn't have a clue as to what his father would say when he asked him. He didn't think it would be too bad since his father was always telling him that he should make friends. This would be a great opportunity to meet some new people who shared similar interests.
Taking a deep breath, Blaine stood outside his father's door and decided he had to ask now. He had been putting off talking to his dad about it for the last week because he hadn't been able to find the courage. But now he had no choice. The first rehearsal was tomorrow and if he missed that rehearsal, he would lose his chance to join.
Blaine quietly knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Blaine pushed open the door and stepped into his father's office. "What do you need, Blaine?" his father, Michael, asked him.
"Um, I was just wondering if I would be able to join a club at school." Blaine hoped that if he phrased it this way, his father wouldn't ask too much about the nature of the club. If Blaine would be joining any kind of sports team, he knew his father wouldn't mind, but because it was show choir and something that his father considered 'girly', he wasn't sure if his father was actually going to go for it.
Blaine watched his father's eyes light up. "You've finally decided to try a sport?"
"Uh, not exactly. It's one of the other extracurriculars," Blaine explained.
"Which one?"
That was the question Blaine had been afraid of getting. "Show choir," Blaine mumbled.
"I didn't catch that," Michael said.
"Show choir," Blaine said a little louder.
"You want to join the show choir?" Michael asked.
Blaine simply nodded.
"Why on earth would you want to do something like that?"
"It sounds like it would be fun," Blaine reasoned.
"Blaine, show choir is not fun for boys. It's where all the girls go. You want to do something manly, like a football."
The idea of playing football definitely did not sound like Blaine's idea of a good time. "I don't want to play football."
"Basketball would be a good idea to," Michael suggested.
"I want to do show choir," Blaine repeated.
"Blaine, I'm not paying any money for this extracurricular so you can spend all of your time with a bunch of girls singing and dancing and wearing make up. I won't allow it."
"But dad—"
"That's the end of this discussion. Show choir is useless. There's no point in doing it. Even if you did something like the Future Business Leaders of America, that'd be better. That would be really good for you."
"But that's not what I want to do."
"I'm not paying for you to waste your time with some useless club. Pick something else and then maybe I'll reconsider it."
"What if I paid for all the fees?" Blaine asked. Maybe then his dad would reconsider it. All he would have to do would be to sign the form saying it was ok for Blaine to participate. Surely, his dad would be ok with that solution.
"I'm still not signing the form," Michael said with determination.
"But I'll pay for everything. You don't have to come to anything. All you would have to do is sign the form saying that it is ok."
"And I said that I'm not going to do it. You need to find a better way to spend your time. Singing and dancing are useless and a waste of your time."
"But dad—"
"That's enough, Blaine."
Blaine swallowed back any retorts he had and walked out of his father's office feeling incredibly defeated. It was the one thing he had wanted to do and his father had shut him down. Now, he had no idea what he was going to do. There was no way that he was going to be able to do show choir now. His mom was out of town for the next week on a business trip so she couldn't sign the form and his dad was definitely determined to not budge on his decision.
Blaine went to school the next day, completely miserable. Since his father wouldn't fill out the form or give him the money there was no way he would be able to participate in the show choir.
As he was leaving school for the day, he ended up walking past the choir room where the first rehearsal was already in progress. Blaine couldn't help but feel jealous that all of the people in that room had parents that were willing to support what they wanted to do.
He hurried away from the door and out of the school building, determined that next year he would join.
