The Flow Of The Wind

Sebastian loved to gallop—flat to the horse's back, with the wind in his hair, and hooves eating up the road underneath him. Now that he was out of castle grounds, he felt both a gnawing worry and a strange freedom. It was odd to feel both at once, but he could not help it. After these last couple months at court it would be strange to feel okay, between the threats to Mary's life and castle being invaded his nerves were on fragile ground. He tried to push all that down and think about the present, right now, riding with the wind in his hair and Mary on the horse beside him.

Ever since The Count had attempted to rape her and the multiple brushes with death recently it was needless to say the entire court was keeping a close eye on her. She was rarely aloud to wonder the gardens and was carefully watched when she managed to convince them to take her outside, the French didn't want to make her feel like a prisoner but they needed her alive and if keeping her close by was what it took, well so be it.

So you could say he was breaking a few rules by taking her outside the castle grounds, but he knew he would be able to protect her and staying stuck inside had been getting to her. He casually slipped her out from her room and they went straight to the stables. Bash knew if Queen Catherine or even Francis found out what he'd done they would be less than happy but he couldn't bring himself to care right now.

Slowing the horse just before the edge of a lake he gracefully dismounted the horse and reached his hand up to help Mary down. She murmured polite thanks at his gentlemanly actions and began walking towards the bed of water, she looked simply stunning. Her long locks falling down her back and blowing in the wind, she took his breath away. She always did really.

"I can't express my thanks enough. French Court is beautiful but I was feeling rather imprisoned." She said, her gaze never leaving the water. "I know they are just trying to keep me safe but it feels like no matter what we do something bad always happens… And I am beginning to think that this is how it will always be." She sounds so exhausted and he can't help but feel a stab at his heart.

"Long ago I figured out that not every crisis can be managed. As much as we want to keep ourselves safe, we can't protect ourselves from everything. If we want to embrace life, we also have to embrace chaos." And he vowed "I will always protect you Mary, if you choose to believe in anything, believe that."

She stared at him not quite sure what to say, so she gave him a warm smile and a nod of tilt of her head.

They will eventually have to return to the castle, to all their problems but right now on the lake with the sun setting leaving a beautiful purple and orange sky he shut his eyes and listened to the sound of leaves blowing across the field and water lapping at the edge. And for the first time in a while he was perfectly content.
