Finn's sitting on the couch as he watches Liam crawl around and play on the floor. Rachel has a standard all day rehearsal today, so it's just he and Liam at home waiting for something exciting to happen. Liam's been standing quite a lot lately so Finn suspects that he will start walking soon. He can tell that Liam wants to walk, every once in a while he'll see Liam trying to move his foot, but nothing ever happens. So for now , Finn just sits and waits, never taking his eyes off of his son. He doesn't want to miss a single thing.
"Do you want to walk, Buddy? I can tell you are frustrated by the look on your face. You'll walk soon, okay, I just know you can do it." Finn says walking over to kiss Liam on the cheek.
Minutes later Liam picks up his foot and takes just a little bitty step.
"Oh my god! You're walking, look at you, my big boy. Daddy's so proud of you, Now come one you can do it come on, walk to Daddy, nice and slow now, that's it you can do it. good job you are doing so good. Finn says and then Liam almost falls backwards so Finn goes to help him get his balance.
"Alright, there you go, all fixed. Now just three more steps and you've gotten all the way to me, okay. You can do it. There you go you did it, my goodness, that was so good wait till Mommy finds out that you finally started walking. Let's surprise her when she gets home from work, does that sound good to you, Buddy?" Finn tells Liam smiling and kissing his tiny little cheek.
Fiffteen minutes after Liam has finished walking, he falls asleep on the floor, his hands curled up into these tiny, cute, little fist.
"Aww, all that walking wore you out didn't it, Little Man. Let's go put you down in your crib for a proper nap, you're exhausted." Finn says picking up Liam and being very, very careful not to wake him up. He carries the very sleepy little boy to his room and sets him in his crib."
"You have a good nap, okay Buddy. Daddy is very, very proud of you. You are growing up so fat I can't believe you are already walking all on your own. Please stop growing up so fast, you're going to make your daddy start crying, I will see you in a little bit, okay? Sleep tight." Finn tries so hard not to start crying, but he's just so proud of his son that he can't stop himself from crying.
Finn fixes himself lunch and sits on the couch watching the basketball game absentmindedly as he waits for Liam to wake up from his nap. Fifteen minutes pass and then Liam finally wakes up.
"Hey Buddy, you're up did you have a good nap? I bet you're hungry come on and Daddy will fix you some lunch, Alright?"
"Whoah, slow down, Kiddo, you're going to make a mess all over yourself and we don't want that to happen now do we."
"You like strawberry banana don't you, Liam it's your favorite isn't it?"
Liam giggles, his teeth showing brightly in his smile. "You silly little boy, I suppose I can take that as a yes, huh?"
A few minutes later Rachel calls.
"Hi Babe, I wasn't expecting to get your call this soon, you must've been put on break much earlier than usual." Finn says.
"Yeah, it's quite nice to be on break this early. So, how's Liam, is he doing alright, does he miss me? Rachel asks.
"Liam's fine Rachel, and of course he misses you, he's his mommy's little boy. We actually have a little surprise for you when you get home."
"Oh you do, I love surprises, what on earth could it be?"
"Well silly, I can't tell you, or else it wouldn't be a very good surprise."
"Alright, I suppose it wouldn't hurt me to wait till I get home from work to find out what it is."
"Good, because trust me you are going to be very, very surprised when you see what it is."
"Well I have to go so I can eat lunch before my break is over, I just thought I would call and check on the two of you, I love you, make sure you tell Liam I love him, I'll see you soon, bye."
"I will, and I love you too, goodbye."
"That was Mommy Liam, she told me to tell you that she loves you." Finn tells Liam. The little boy smiles.
"Yeah, I know buddy, you love her too, don't you."
"Come on Liam, let's go play, does that sound good to you?"
They play with Liam's colorful and squishy balls for a while because they are his favorite, he likes to slide them around the floor and even throw them around sometimes.
"That was a good little thrower aren't you. I bet you will be the quarterback one day. You might have to be just a little taller, but if not that's okay, if you really like to play football, I'm sure that coaches will be able to find the perfect position where they can put you on the team. Especially if I am the one who is your coach." Finn tells Liam smiling.
"You want to throw again, Little Man? Or maybe you can walk, I bet you can walk even farther this time. What do you say? Are you up for that?"
Liam gives Finn a big smile. "Well I would say that is definitely a yes."
Liam starts walking at a much faster pace this time, and to be honest is kind of scares Finn a bit.
"Liam, you have to slow down just a bit ok? If you don't you are going to fall down and hit your-" Finn starts, but it's too late for warnings, Liam has already fallen down and hit his head on the floor, must have been a pretty hard fall too because the poor boy is crying his head off.
"Shh, shh, it's okay, you're alright Liam, Daddy's got you, don't walk so fast next time and this won't happen again, I promise. No let's just go sit down for a few minutes so we can get your head to feeling better, alright?" Finn says kissing Liam on the top of his tiny cheek.
"I love you, you know that right Liam? You make me so proud, well me and your mommy, you are the best thing that has ever happened to us, you really are you are the most special little boy in the whole entire world, make sure you remember that, okay?"
A couple minutes before half past six, Rachel gets home. Finn is so excited to see her face when she finds out that Liam can walk all on his own now. She is going to be so proud of her sweet little boy.
"Hey Honey, how was your rehearsal, busy I'm guessing, you look really tired."
"I am, dance steps half of the rehearsal today. Anyway, did you and Liam have a good day today?"
"We sure did, would you like us to show you your surprise now."
"Oh, yes please. I almost forgot that the two of you have a surprise that you've wanted to show me."
"Come on Liam, let's show your mommy what you finally learned how to do."
Rachel looks at Finn curiously as he helps Liam stand up and then lets go of his hands. She smiles when she sees Liam take a step towards her.
"Oh my goodness, Liam, you're finally walking. Mommy is so proud of you, you're growing up so fast, come on you can do it, it's not that much farther, come on walk to Mommy." Rachel encourages and she smiles when he finally reaches her.
"Good job Baby! I knew you could do it, now, time for some celebratory mommy kisses, mwah." Rachel says picking up Liam and twirling him around and peppering his tiny cheeks in kisses.
"I knew you would just be so proud of him." Finn says smiling.
"I am, I didn't think it was possible to get any more proud, but I guess it really is."
"Yeah, I am not going to lie, I totally cried this morning, I was just so proud of him that I couldn't help it."
"Aww, that's so cute, my husband is such a proud father."
"Oh, there were tears in your eyes too, don't you even try to lie to me about it, Rachel."
"Oh, you're right there were, can you believe that he will be a year old in less than two months from now?"
"Please don't bring that up I think I've had enough reminders of how fat Liam is growing up for one day?"
"Isn't that right Liam, you are such a big boy, aren't you?" Rachel coos.
Liam smiles. "Okay Liam, time to give your bath , so you can go to bed, you must be really tired from all of that walking that you did today." Rachel tells her son.
"Oh trust me he'll be fast asleep tonight, he worked really hard."
"Is Daddy right, Sweet Pea, are you tired?"
After Rachel puts Liam to bed, she joins Finn to find him looking at Liam's earlier pictures on the camera.
"Feeling nostalgic?" She asks him, kissing his cheek.
"Yeah, I guess you could put it that way, it just he has grown up so fast and learned so much and I don't want him to grow up, he's our little boy, and possibly our only child. I just want him to stay little like this forever." Finn says, and he starts to cry.
"I know you love him, and trust me I don't want him to grow up either, but you know, it's going to happen anyway, but think of all the wonderful things that are going to happen because of it, you teaching him how to play sports, taking him to games , and to watch my shows, the first time you teach him how to be nice to girls, you know all of those great things."
"It's not that, it's just I don't want to see anyone hurt him, he's such a good little boy and that would just break my heart."
"I know, I don't want that to happen to him either, but he'll know that he has us to go to and that will make it better, I promise ."
"Do you think I'm a good father?"
"Of course I do! You are a wonderful father!"
"Then why don't I feel like I'm a good father?" Finn says breaking down and sobbing just a little.
"Hey, hey, look at me, you were there for him when he took his first steps, you give him kisses and don't waste a single opportunity to tell him you love him, you teach him things, you're constantly playing with him and helping him feel better when he gets hurt, now tell me how that makes you such a bad father, because as far I'm concerned it doesn't."
"You're the best wife in the entire world, you know that, don't you."
"Thank you very much, and you are the best father in the world, don't ever forget that."
"I won't I promise, you're always right about all of that. I just never have the confidence to believe you when you say that to me."
"Well you should learn to have it, because it's true. Absolutely, one hundredd percent true."
"Okay, I will, I promise.
Rachel smiles. "Good."
