'Good morning one and all!' smiled Jonny as he approached the Nurse's station on Darwin 'I have one black coffee for you Mo and...where's Jac?...got a cup of tea for her' placingthe hot drinks on the side
'Somebody woke up in a good mood. What was it? Hot sex? Cooked breakfast?' joked Mo, taking her drink whilst looking through a patients file.
'Now now Mo! Where's Jac?'
'In with a patient that was bought up from AAU. If only she was as cheery as you this morning'
'Not everybody has my natural charm and enthusiasm for life Ms Effanga. And why can't I be happy? I'm going to be a dad soon!'
'You've reminded us of nothing else for the past two months Maconie!'
As he walked away Jonny stuck his tongue out to the Doctor to which she laughed and carried on with her work. The nurse entered bay seven and popped his head around the curtain.
'Good Morning!' He greeted 'What's going on in here then?'
'This is Mr Jarvis; possible endocarditis. Can we run a full blood count U's and E's, ECG, MRI and half hourly obs' ordered the red haired consultant handing the notes over to her husband.
'Right away' responded the Scot chasing after his wife as she walked towards her office 'Jac... What time did you leave this morning?'
'About five thirty. Some of us had to be up earlier than others!' entering her office Jac eased herself into the cream leather chair
'Have I got to remind you you're pregnant- very pregnant. Jac, you're meant to be taking it easy not dashing everywhere!'
'I'm perfectly capable of carrying out my ward rounds and treating patients. I haven't got a life threatening illness!'
'Very well. There's a cup of tea on the nurses' station for you' he added before walking out. Jac stayed sat in her chair, uncomfortably, and tried to focus on the work that lay on the desk. A sharp and unrecognisable pain shot up her back causing her to catch her breath.
'Y'know when I said you needed to take it easy I actually meant it Jac' insisted Jonny as he pushed his wife down the corridor in a wheelchair 'I knew this was going to happen'
'Shut up, just shut up will you!' the Consultant replied whilst breathing deeply
'Okay-okay sorry. Just try and stay calm'
'Calm? How the hell am I meant to 'stay calm' with you rabbiting on!'
Jonny twisted the wheelchair around as they approached the ward door and pressed the buzzer on the wall. After a brief few seconds a member of staff answered.
'Hello?'
'Hi. Ms Naylor and Mr Maconie'
'Come on through' instructed the woman.
Jonny pushed the door open with his back as the lock buzzed to let them through.
Ms Naylor had gone into full blown labour by lunch time- still desperate to conceal the obvious agony she was in. The red haired woman had spent the majority of the morning hidden in her office trying to convince herself the pain would pass shortly- to no avail.
Jonny had barged into the room to pass on Mr Jarvis' blood results, but instead found his wife leaning on the windowsill groaning. Immediately the male had discarded the results onto the desk and dashed to the woman's side, placing a hand on her shoulder.
'What's up?' he questioned, panic clear in his voice
'As a nurse I would have thought that was quite obvious! But just in case you need help, it would seem I'm in labour!' she huffed, irritated by the question
'You're not due for another 2 weeks'
'Sadly I have no control over that Jonathon'
Briefly pausing Maconie seemed a little perplexed over what to do, before sprinting off. He could be heard from the office announcing the news.
'MO-MO! Jac's gone into labour!'
The pair of them ran back into the office, Jonny in possession of a wheelchair, a sense of complete excitement on their faces.
Peering over her shoulder Jac mustered up her energy to highlight her displeasure of the situation 'I'm your wife Maconie, not a bloody zoo animal. Why don't you go and announce it to the whole world that I'm in labour!'
The surgeon and nurse eased the consultant into the wheelchair. Jonny dashed out of the office pushing the wheelchair with Mo following. As he sprinted down the corridor to the life Ms Effanga stood watching.
'Good luck! Keep me posted'
At 16:16 Jonny was at his wife's side, one arm behind her neck and his other hand being crushed in hers, as they welcomed their baby daughter into the world. Being the gentleman he was Jonny had spent the time uttering words of encouragement to his wife and trying his very best to make her comfortable. Just four hours after arriving on the maternity unit and a barrage of swear words on Jac's behalf the married couple had become parents. The male was stood holding Jac as their daughter entered the word. He too had almost let a cry out as the newborn did.
'You did it Jac...you did it!' he whispered whilst kissing her head. The baby was immediately placed onto her mother's chest and in that moment an unrecognisable wave of love swamped the Consultant. Cradling the small child and absorbing every detail of tiny body, happy tears slipped down Jac's cheek. Jonny stood behind his wife and child- completely elated.
Two hours after the birth the Scottish nurse sprinted to Darwom, hardly wanting to spend a second away from his new family. Once kidding into the reception area by the Nurse's station he banged a discarded teaspoon on a cup.
'Hello-hello...can I have your attention for just a few moments please' he urged as the staff piled around intrigued 'At 4:16 this afternoon Jac and I welcomed our beautiful baby daughter into the world weighing 6lb 5oz. Felicity Tara Maconie and her gorgeous mum are doing well resting in maternity.
His short speech was welcomed with a round of applause and cheering. Elliott shook his hand whilst Mo hung around his neck a little too tightly.
'Tara?' questioned Mr Hope smiling
'Yeah... after the one and only Dr Tara Lowe. If our daughter grows into a fraction of her we'll be more than happy. And it seemed appropriate. I do hope we haven't upset you Mr Hope'
'On the contrary Jonny. Oliver will be delighted'
'When do we get to meet her then?' butted in Mo
'I'm so proud of you Jacqueline Maconie' soothed Jonny as he hugged his wife close on the hospital bed- their newborn daughter lay just feet away fast asleep 'Thank you for giving me the greatest gift imaginable'
The Consultant snuggled in closer to her husband's chest 'No, thank you. You've taught me to love again and you've given me more love and support than I thought possible'
'That's what husband's are for! She's beautiful...our very own Felicity Tara Maconie'
'What did Elliott say about her name?'
'He was touched'
'Tara had real promise, Jonny. She had something about her that I had never observed in an F1 before'
'I know- I know she did' he empathised; the hole on Darwin was still evident nine months on from her death 'You're going to make a great mother. Flick will be the luckiest child around. Trust me. And I'll look after you both; you don't even have to question it'
