The Maconie's exited the lift onto Darwin. The couple held hands whilst Jonathon carefully and proudly carried the baby car seat with their daughter in. Once onto the ward in view of everybody they were quickly joined by various colleagues who seemed to 'coo and arr' in equal measures. Nurse Maconie placed the car seat on the work surface and gently unstrapped the tiny infant- lifting her out tenderly. Jac looked on smiling.
'This, ladies and gentlemen, is Flick Maconie. I'll never bore of saying those very words'
'You ole' softie Maconie!' retorted Mo 'So come on then, do we get a hold?' placing her arms in the correct positioning Effanga took hold of the child, talking quietly to her.
'Congratulations, both of you' exclaimed Elliott shaking Jonny's hand and kissing Jac on the cheek 'I have absolutely no doubt you will be fantastic parents'
'Elliott, there's something we would like to ask you' spoke Jac before briefly looking at her husband who nodded in agreement 'We'd love it if you would agree to be Felicity's granddad. It occurred to us that as our parents aren't around she would miss such a figure in her life-'
'Absolutely! I'd be beyond delighted to fulfil such a position' he then embraced the teary woman.
Dressed in a new pair of jeans and brown brogues, as well as a red checked shirt, Jonny carried his well wrapped up daughter, in her car seat, out of the hospital for the first time. Beside him, holding his other hand, was Jac dressed casually in a loose fitting pair of trousers and top, along with a cream cardigan.
At less than a day old the youngest member of the Maconie family was able to briefly experience her first feel of winter. The fresh snow that lay on the ground crunched under her parent's feet, with flakes still falling around them.
'Careful Jac' warned the male holding onto his wife securely; stabilising the red-heads every move 'Not too far to go now' Trudging across the car park in the arctic weather Jonny watched his footing, aware he was carrying precious cargo. The usually confident female Consultant seemed a little apprehensive; still sore from the delivery and her body was slowly adjusting to the absence of a foetus.
The Scotsman unlocked the black Range Rover as they approached. Opening the right back door he proceeded to secure their baby into the seat holder. He checked the attachments once, twice and a third time just to be on the safe side.
'See, told you you would master it!' encouraged Jac as she climbed in the opposite rear back door to be near her daughter. Her husband responded with a beam that spoke louder than any words ever could. Gently closing the back door so as not to wake the newborn, Jonny climbed into the front of the car and started the engine.
'Right, let's take my family home!' he announced proudly.
A day ago it had just been the two of them, a couple; now they were a family.
