Final Chapter - The End of All Roads - Part 1

*This chapter is only in Marcel's POV

Last time...

Caroline, when stabbed by Claire with the Stake of Dessication, is sent into limbo where she relives some of the treasured memories in her life, particularly with Klaus. She is tempted to do so for all eternity before Henry intercedes and tries to convince her to wake up so she can help them all defeat Silas. Qestiyah and Esther are revealed to be attempting to manipulate Caroline's mind to control her like they are doing with Claire but Henry's magic is repelling them. During this time, Claire enters the room to announce to Silas, Esther, Mikael, and Qestiyah that Klaus and Co. have arrived. ..

This is the end! Almost. As you can see, I broke this up cause I had stuff I wanted to address and it just got way longer than I anticipated. Hopefully that's okay. I am off work all this week so trust me, the second part won't take as long as this did to come out.

Marcel POV

Um. Yeah. This was just awkward.

No one was saying...ANYTHING.

Why?

Because of what happened the last time someone talked and slipped up.

Prime example is when Sophie, while we were reminiscing about good times over drinks at a bar we stopped at for a break while going to Mystic Falls, mentioned Caroline by accident.

And that...was just the beginning of the end.

The sound of glass shattering is what made us all turn to Klaus's direction. His hand was soaked in his blood from the broken shot glass and his jaw was clenched so tightly that I thought it would be the next thing to shatter.

We all held a breath when we saw the bartender come up to him all concerned, asking if he was alright.

The laugh that left his mouth started slow then got loud and maniacal sending chills down our spine. We inadvertently took a step back, even Elijah whose usually calm, cool and collected looked disturbed.

"Am I...Am I..." Klaus managed between laughs, "Am I alright? He says!"

The bartender stared at Klaus like he's just grown two heads and the whole bar fell deathly silent, staring at the madman named Klaus Mikaelson.

And trust me, he definitely was looney tunes because he went postal a second later, killing everyone in sight, taking out people's intestines or hearts and stuffing it down people's throats...

Somehow, I managed to keep my cool bad guy card and not hurl my lunch on the spot.

When Elijah tries to stop him, Klaus slams his head so hard on the countertop Elijah's skull cracks open, exposing a part of his brain.

That's when I took Sophie and got the hell out, mentally scarred for life.

Sure I killed people before but that was just...

Yeah. There are no words for that shit.

While Klaus sat in the driver's seat of the car like a Walking Dead zombie, staring into nothingness with blood and gore clinging to him, (I swear I thought he was going to start moaning any minute), we cleaned up the bar and made a pact to not say a word on the off chance that we would say the wrong thing to set him off again.

We didn't even have the balls to tell him to clean himself up we were so scared.

I know. I said it. Scared.

He's the freaking Original Hybrid okay and I don't fucking got Davina on demand to shut him down...

That makes me pause.

Davina. I never let myself think too long about the young teenage witch I had under my care 20 years ago. That died because of my power lust.

But here I am making that mistake...

20 years ago I had gotten too greedy. I let the allure of power consume me. Klaus arrived and like a fool I believed he was alright with me being King of the Quarter. That Klaus, my mentor, my sire, my friend had only came through New Orleans on a passing fancy, nostalgia even. But then I found the house not hotel he was staying in, with a pregnant Hayley inside (I inwardly groan at the mere memory of the were bitch that I was fooled into joining forces with. Thanks for nothing Tyler Lockwood. ..). Not long after that, the Originals opened up Bloodlust, Klaus' obvious headquarters and that made it plain that he not only meant to stay, but to rival my power and eventually take from me all that I built. I thought little of Queenie, then bartender who quickly became head mistress of the joint that I met in passing opening night of the club. Caroline even made it clear during my numerous visits (What can I say? The drinks were phenomenal and diabolical scheming takes a lot out of you man) to the place that she wanted no part in the "pissing contest" that Klaus and I had going on. We were being a bunch of boys, (true) which is just a shame, cause "like seriously aren't you two like a billion?" I smile at the direct quote from my memory. So much endless talks and shared digs on Klaus we'd laughed hysterically about...

I still can't be believe she's dead, I can't help but think sadly.

Caroline quickly became the safe zone between us. "Uh, Switzerland here!" She would always tell us when Klaus and I got into it in her presence.

And somehow, some way, she would cool us off. She was good like that.

Then I took things too far. I let Tyler Lockwood poison my mind, fill it with thoughts of greatness and vengeance against Klaus for plotting against me. Little did we know that Hayley was manipulating us both, using us to distract Klaus while she used her baby's blood to turn her long lost family and friends into hybrids to kill us all.

She went after Caroline first, jealous of the affection that Klaus gave to Caroline and not to her and her baby.

And that was her end, for when she kidnapped Caroline, everyone united against her. She underestimated how many came to love Caroline in the short time she was in the quarter.

All were against Hayley except Tyler Lockwood, who simply hated Klaus too much. He took her side and smelling Caroline's blood on him sent Klaus in a rage that nearly made him kill the kid.

Luckily, the cries of a newborn put a stillness to the chaos and in Caroline's hands was a gorgeous newborn.

I still remember Klaus walking up to Caroline in a daze, staring at the baby in her arms in utter amazement...

*Desires of the Heart*

Flashback

"Claire," she whispers, smiling down at the child she is rocking in her arms. "Her name is Claire."

He tears his gaze away from Caroline with obvious effort, and looks at the child. His hand comes up, resting it gently on the baby's head. Instead of his usual stoic face, a million and one emotions are being shown across it like a kaleidoscope.

Finally, one emotion rests on his features and I know the words that will come out of his mouth won't be good.

Coldly, he steps away from Caroline and the child now cooing in her arms. The extreme anger I see seems to weigh down his next words but the rage embedded in them is unmistakable.

"Kill it. "

Caroline gasps just when Elijah says: "No brother. "

"I WANT IT DEAD ELIJAH!" He bellows. "I will not have the spawn of that traitorious were bitch slash whore or whatever you want to call her, anywhere near me! I will not raise it!" he spat.

"How could you. .."

Klaus' head snaps in Caroline's direction and he visually squirms at the look of disgust on her face.

"Sweetheart," he says in a placating tone that I never knew he was capable of using. "This doesn't concern you. "

"You can't do this!" She yells at him, holding the now crying baby close to her chest. "I won't let you!"

"Let me? Caroline, her mother tried to kill you!"

"Her mother Klaus, not her! And before you start your vengeance protocol, Hayley died giving birth."

"Excellent," he says without a beat almost gleefully. "Now the babe will have her mother to keep her company on the other side," he quips.

"Seriously Klaus?! This baby is innocent! You can't punish it because of its parent, something that I thought you would know all too well and never dream of doing to someone else. "

Klaus looks taken aback by that and a glimmer of what looks like shame settles in his eyes when he looks down at the floor while Caroline continues.

"Oh my God how is this even an argument?! This is your child too! I know you like to pretend that Hayley got pregnant like the Virgin Mary but you slept with her remember? Man up and take responsiblity! This child needs you! Needs us..." she trails off.

Klaus looks up at that, hope evident in his eyes. "Us?" Wow. Now I get it. He was willing to kill the baby because he thought he would lose Caroline otherwise, I watch on in awe. Is there no limit to he would do to keep Caroline?

She walks up to him with a faint smile and puts a hand reassuringly on his shoulder. "Yeah. I promised Hayley I would. It was her final wish."

Klaus growls at that. "You are much too kind for your own good sweetheart, making lifelong promises to your kidnapper and prospective murderer..."

"I know," she says cutting him off. "I didn't like her much either but helping her give birth to such a miracle," she throws winning smile at the kid before looking at Klaus again. "I realize that she was just a desperate woman looking for love and wanting to give her child what she didn't have; a family Klaus."

Klaus looks intently into her eyes then, his eyes welling up with clear affection for the woman before him as he raises his hand and starts stroking her face lovingly.

She leans into his touch, holding his hand to her face.

"You're definitely full of light Caroline Forbes," he says huskily, his eyes darkening as if he would take her and rip her clothes off right there. I hold back a gag.

"So I've been told," she whispers all seductive like, giving him an equally heated gaze before she kissing his palm, her eyes fluttering close on contact.

In return, Klaus lets a breathy sigh, the sound totally grossing me out when I realize where this is quickly heading.

God. Someone burn my eyes out with vervain.

Thankfully, Bekah clears her throat loudly. "Now that's been sorted, can you both put this horrid Spanish novella romance to rest with all those vomit worthy gazes and not so subtle flirting techniques? Come on Caroline. The baby probably needs a bottle or something," she says coming up beside them.

Reluntantly, Klaus steps away from her, but his gaze remains trained on Caroline who looks at him hopefully.

He glances at the child, then back at her.

"Go with Bekah love. I'm sure she'll assist you in attaining whatever the child may need."

She smiles widely at him and Klaus can't help but return a smile of his own back.

It immediately falls when Bekah extends her hand out to Klaus.

He frowns at it.

"You know buying baby supplies costs money right?"

He rolls his eyes before he gives up a gold credit card from his wallet.

"Just go," he growls annoyed.

With a brilliant smile of her own, which clearly mirrors a little kid in the candy store, she loops her arm around Caroline's free one, who is beaming with as much excitement as her. They start to leave but Caroline stops, her eyes landing on me for the first time since she's entered the room. She puts the baby in Rebekah's arms, flashes to me and gives me a big hug.

She pulls back and I quickly glance at Klaus, far behind Caroline whose watching us with a clenched jaw, not happy.

"You came," she says, forcing me to stop looking at Klaus.

"Of course. My liquor drinking future depended on it," I say with a smirk.

She smacks my arm. "Of course that was it! Jerk!" She chastises me playfully.

"You should go love," says Klaus in a controlled voice.

She turns around, her smile dropping from her face when she reads his expression.

"No..." she says slowly as she realizes what's about to happen. "NO! Klaus you can't kill him! He was tricked by Hayley. You both were!"

I put an arm on her shoulder to reassure her which Klaus growls loudly in disapproval. "It's all right Care. Or should I say Queenie?"

Her eyes fill with tears. "I won't be his Queen," she snaps and from the corner of my eye, I see a flash of hurt pass Klaus' eyes. "Not at the expense of your life."

She turns to Klaus. "I'm serious Klaus! You can forget about a relationship with me like forever if you kill him!"

"Forever's a long time sweetheart," he says with a dark smile. "I doubt you'd last a day. "

She narrows her eyes at him, not amused. "Wanna bet?" she shoots back.

He looks calculatingly at her. Finally he says: "First I spare Tyler for you now you want me to spare Marcel. Both of which tried to kill me multiple times. Aren't you Switzerland?" he grins, throwing her famous phrase back at her.

"Not in this."

"Would you prefer to see them succeed in killing me before you agree to having them killed?"

"That'll never happen. You're the big bad original hybrid. You can handle them in your sleep," she says automatically. He smiles at that.

"So please, don't kill him. He's my friend," Caroline begs.

Klaus looks at me and lets out a huff. "The mercy I continue to extend for your sake..." he grumbles. "Fine. Go ahead with Bekah. I won't kill him. I give you my word."

She smiles, then turns to me and gives me a peck on the cheek. "See you around Marcellus."

She saunters away. When she passes Elijah, she whispers without breaking her stride: "Please help him keep his word Elijah."

"I promise Ms. Forbes," he responds.

She tries to pass Klaus without a sideways glance but he grabs her arm and pulls her to him.

"Must you have Elijah babysit me? I gave you my word. Is that not enough?"

She touches his face, softening his gaze. "It's more like an insurance policy for myself to eradicate even the slightest possibility of me having to follow through and be away from you for killing him because honestly..."

She traces her finger over his lower lip, his eyes fluttering close in response. "I don't think I could survive it anymore. "

She leans in and lays a kiss at the corner of his mouth staying there to only murmur with her lips brushing his stubble: "Don't make me."

With that, she pulls away from him, breaking the spell she so obviously and effectively casted on him for Klaus stares at her adoringly till she leaves the building with the baby and Rebekah.

When the door shuts, I have no time to muse on how a teenage blonde can so masterfully manipulate the most powerful creature on the planet before I'm thrown up against a wall and held there by a vice grip hold owned by that said creature who only moments ago, looked more human than in all the years I've known him.

"Now what to do with you Marcellus?" He croons. "I kidnapped your dear Davina and delivered her to the witches with the set agreement that I would only do so if their families', present and future swore allegiance to me for all eternity..."

"No! They'll kill her!" I shout panicking.

"Oh...I know," he grins at me devilishly. "How else could they summon enough power to take out a 100 hybrids sired to Hayley while we come in here uninterrupted to save Caroline?"

"You son of a bitch!" I cry furiously, moving to lunge at him. But he simply pushes me back against the wall roughly with ease.

"YOU BROUGHT THIS UPON YOURSELF!" He roars in my face, his anger making his hybrid features appear. "I SAVED YOU! RAISED YOU AS MY OWN AND YOU REPAY ME WITH TREACHERY!"

In his rage, he crushes my windpipe. I try to cry out in pain but instead I struggle to breathe with no luck until it heals.

It's nothing short of agony in the meantime.

"Niklaus!"

"SILENCE ELIJAH!"

"Caroline..."

"To hell with that woman!" He snaps, but the level of anger in his voice has already dropped exponentially. "She'll forgive me soon enough!"

"Will she Brother?" Responds Elijah, moving to lean calmly on a nearby doorpost. "What if she does not? Will you risk an eternity of possible loneliness for a fleeting indulgence in vengeance? It is not worth it Niklaus. "

With a roar, he tosses me towards Elijah.

"What would you have me do? He cannot go unpunished!" He says, pacing back and forth like a menacing, caged animal.

"Of course not brother," replies Elijah softly.

"Well?" Klaus presses.

Elijah gives me an eerie smile that sends shivers down my spine. "There is this place called the Garden where The former King of the Quarter sent all his disobedient subjects. .."

And the smile on Klaus' face seals my fate.

For 15 years, I stay entombed in the Garden that I created. The voices of all those I sentenced there taunting and mocking me without rest. Eventually, the anger I felt towards Klaus for putting me there is replaced with the realization that my undoing was of my own making. That I deserved all the hatred aimed at me from my once subjects that I took everything away from. Never again will I take for granted second chances like the one Klaus gave to me when he saved me from the slave master's whip all those years ago. If I ever got out of here, I would be grateful and be content with whatever gifts life throws my way, I vow.

So when my second chance comes in the form of an inquisitive 15 year old named Claire, I make sure to embrace it and not squander that chance...

Under the bricks I'm sealed under, all I could do is see, for my eyes were the only part of my body that wasn't covered.

When she comes into view and turns towards me, I gasp, struck with a pair of Navy blue eyes that are owned by the most beautiful creature I've ever seen. Her full, raspberry lips that are somehow familiar, part slightly as she tucks her long chestnut Brown hair with the hand that was holding the strap of the bag hanging on her arm not long ago.

She comes up to me slowly, stopping only when she comes close enough for her strawberry scent to assault my nostrils and her breath to fan my dry eyelids.

"Who are you? Who did this to you?" She asks, her eyes filled with sadness. With great effort, I manage to answer her.

"Marcel," I say hoarsely. I try to answer her second question, but it's too much, and my eyes roll back in exhaustion.

Before I know it, I'm falling forward, landing in the embrace of soft arms, my head resting on supple breasts that do nothing but pollute my mind with images that are definitely naughty.

I barely keep my eyes open long enough to see her pull out a bag of blood from her bag.

My vampire features come forth immediately, the thirst nearly overcoming me but curiosity prevails.

"Why?" Is all I can say.

"Because I can't wait to see Care's face when she finds out that her friend Marcel, the one she complains about all the time of being an epic douche for not sending her at least one postcard for 15 years, has been trapped in this horrid place the whole time."

She brings the blood bag to my lips which I bite into eagerly, draining it record time.

"Good thing I like to stock up," she mutters, giving me another bag.

5 blood bags and a stop at a souvenir store later, we are walking towards the outskirts of town to an open field hosting a pale yellow mansion, stables, a greenhouse and a lake.

"Are you sure about this kid?" I ask apprehensively. "I know I said I owe you my life and I'll spend it paying you back however I can but going to see Klaus is counterproductive on so many levels."

"No! He has to answer for this! Him trapping you and leaving all those vampires in that Garden? Totally NOT cool."

"You can't stop him from putting me back in there or killing me! No one can."

"Oh you'll be surprised what me and Care are capable of together..." she replies ominously with a smirk that really, REALLY reminds me of..."

"Who are you?" I ask, just as she pushes open the double front doors hard enough that it hits the walls loud enough to alert everyone in the house.

In a flash, the whole Original family crowds the foyer with vast arrays of emotions on their faces. Some shock, surprise or...

"Marcel!"

...happiness.

I'm tackled by a flash of blond hair. When Caroline pulls away, another blonde steps up and smacks me across my face.

"Bekah!" exclaims Caroline in an admonishing tone.

"Have you forgotten?" she snaps, glaring at me. "Dear Marcellus here has not spoken to either of us for nearly 2 decades. I'm far from greeting him with open arms."

Caroline turns to me, her arms folded and her face just as angry as Rebekah's now. "You know what? She's absolutely right," Caroline seethes. "I almost thought Klaus killed you, asshole, but Elijah swore to me he didn't! Why didn't you...call?" her face falls then, etched in hurt.

I pull out the two postcards that I bought at the souvenir shop.

"I know it's late..." I start with a winning smile.

"Cute," Caroline and Rebekah say in unison, both not amused.

"Um, I think Care just asked a great question, DAD," chimes in my chestnut haired savior, pissed. "Mind explaining to everyone why Marcel couldn't call anyone?"

Dad? Wait...I think, my mind spinning as Klaus comes into view, his eyes meeting mine. They are cold and clearly calculating how the hell he was going to get out of this one.

"You're Claire..." I murmur, looking at her with new eyes.

"Oh," she smiles brightly at me. "You've heard of me. Fantastic."

I smile back as she glares back at Klaus. "We're still waiting for an answer, Klaus," she hisses.

"Don't you dare take that tone with me," he snaps at her.

"You lucky I didn't just put a bullet to your head and asked questions later," snaps Claire. "How could you do that to him? And Uncle Elijah how could you let him?"

"Okay. Don't talk to your father that way," says Caroline to Claire who rolls her eyes. "And Klaus, what is she talking about? What did you do?"

He clenches his teeth, under her accusing gaze. "What was necessary," he growls.

"Seriously?!" shouts Claire. "You call..."

"...banishing me for 15 years necessary?" I finish before Claire could. "I'd say so. I did take over his Kingdom and tried to kill him."

Claire stares at me in shock, about to retort but I give her a severe look that thankfully she heeds. With a huff, she reluctantly says no more, while Caroline glances at her suspiciously.

"Really? You still could of called," says Rebekah.

"Actually no. I was to have no contact with anyone here. Conditions of my banishment and all that. Right Klaus?"

He assesses me warily before he nods softly.

"Well then, looks like brother has become quite the softie. I would of thought he would at least had tortured you. No doubt Elijah..."

"Try Caroline. He said she was the reason he was extending such mercy."

His lips twitch in a smirk while Caroline smiles at him brightly. "Really?"

Claire scoffs loudly. "Can someone say bullshit? Fuck it. I will." She cups her hands around her mouth. "Bullshit!"

"Claire..." growls Klaus.

"Are you lying Marcel? Did Klaus do something to you?" asks Caroline quietly.

"He tossed me around a few times but nothing serious Care."

"Why don't we prepare the dining room for our guest?" says Elijah, finally making his presence known. "We would remiss if we do not have a nice dinner in his honor. Then Marcel can regal us with tales of what he's been up to the last 15 years. Rebekah, Caroline, Claire?"

Caroline and Rebekah give Klaus and I a long curious look before following Elijah to the dining room.

Claire doesn't budge.

"Feeling quite rebellious today aren't we Claire?" Klaus says, his eyes narrowing dangerously at her.

"No. I'll be going." She looks at Caroline at the doorway. "I promise."

Caroline nods. "I'll see you three inside."

There was a reason Elijah recommended the dining room, because it takes a long time before Klaus growls:

"What exactly are you up to Marcellus? Obviously, when Claire took you out of the garden you could of just ran. Why did you come here?"

"Because you owe him an apology for being an ultimate douche!" answers Claire for me.

Klaus inhales sharply before he responds. "Claire, your sharp tongue has really been trying my patience lately. If you insist in carrying on in such disrespectful manner, do not be surprised if you find your tongue missing from your mouth. Do...you...hear...me?" With that, his eyes flash golden in her direction, and she visibly cringes.

"Yes Father," she replies meekly.

"I'm not up to anything Klaus," I say, taking the heat off Claire. "I know it may be hard to believe, but I don't blame you for what you did. I...I was wrong."

He looks at me incredulously . "Forgive me if I don't just take your word for it mate. For all I know, this can be a ploy to gain my trust so you can bide you time before you attempt to overthrow or kill me again."

"Then I'll watch him."

We both look at her like she's grown two heads.

She raises her hands in surrender. "Listen. Hear me out. You were already complaining about how you didn't like me roaming around the quarter by myself. Now, Marcel can watch me and I can watch Marcel to make sure he isn't plotting against you. Two problems solved."

Just when Klaus opens his mouth to retort, Claire interjects.

"Or I can just tell Care and Aunt Bekah where Marcel really was for all these years." She smiles at him sweetly, knowing she had won.

After a brief staring contest, he grinds out a fine.

Giggling, she claps happily. "Cool! Now all we have to do is get the rest of the vampires out of the garden!"

It took a year and half after that statement, but eventually Claire convinced him to.

"It would only build up your empire by 15%," she said nonchalantly at the time. "Plus, you know that they aren't loyal to Marcel since he put them in there. They will most likely swear allegiance to the man who freed them."

By that time, that little girl who was supposed to die at birth, had grown on me. Her sharp tongue never really went away, much to Klaus' dismay. I always knew it wouldn't because talking trash to Klaus was a Mikaelson family trait. She grew more beautiful over time, and ended up having an infatuation with guns that was sexy as all hell. Queenie and Claire, because I owed them both my life in so many levels, became dear to me. Even if I wanted to kill Klaus for what he did to me, I never could because of them.

End of Flashback

*Desires of the Heart*

I sit in the car, watching as we cross the Welcome to Mystic Falls sign. Thoughts of the past and the realization of losing Caroline and possibly Claire weighing down on me. I can't help but wonder that if I was feeling all jacked up, how was Klaus feeling with all this? If that bar massacre was any indication, he wasn't coping. Not. At. All.

"Niklaus..." starts Elijah.

Both Sophie and I take a sharp intake of breath.

Oh hell no Elijah. Don't talk to him now. We are in a confined space bro! There is nowhere to run!

"Don't Elijah," growls Klaus.

Yeah. Please don't. I want to see at least another 100 or so years...

"We must talk about this Niklaus. I mean, look at you. You are not well," presses on Elijah, who obviously doesn't give a rat's ass for those of us in the car who aren't freaking indestructible!

"I'm fine."

"No you're not. You're still drenched in the blood of your last victims!"

"If it bothers you that much Elijah, I'll take a shower as soon as we reach the mansion."

"That is besides the point. We all loved Caroline and feel the pain of her loss. I am here for you. We all are. We'll help you get through this!"

He faces Elijah angrily. "THERE IS NO GETTING THROUGH THIS ELIJAH!" He snaps. "SHE WAS EVERYTHING! SHE WAS MY LIFE! JUST HOW DO YOU PRESUME THAT I GET THROUGH..."

He doesn't finish, because a gunshot comes through the windshield and hits him clean in the head, rendering him unconscious. Before I can recover from my shock, another wooden bullet comes through, hitting Elijah in the head as he attempts to take control of the wheel.

Sophie screams beside me, as I look out the now shattered windshield.

I barely make out Claire's smiling face, nearly a mile away, as she shoots her gun once more before the car barrels out of control...

A/N And I leave you right there. Part 2 is coming up this week I swear! In the meantime, leave a review! Pretty please with sugar on top ;)?
