I sat waiting for my next patient when I heard him walk in. I looked up to see a tall thin black man dressed in purple, red, and black, sporting a top hat and a cane. "Dr. Facilier," I said as I approached him, putting my hand out. "I'm Dr. Russell."
Rather than shaking my hand, he took off his hat and bowed to me. "A pleasure to meet you Dr. Russell," he said with the deepest, silkiest voice I've ever heard. God damn it, I thought. Why is it that all these evil men who are old enough to be my father, who aren't even physically attractive, have these eargasmic voices? But specifically to Facilier, he was just so smooth. He then got up and took my hand as he put his hat back on, kissing it and looking at me into the eyes seductively.
I took a deep static breath as I stared right back. God f-ing damn it! I screamed in my head, trying to maintain my composure. "Please sit down," I said gesturing to the couch. Without taking his eyes off of me, he smiled as we both sat down. "So now if you don't mind, I just have some questions to ask you."
"Darling you can ask me anything you like."
This wasn't the first, or even second, time that I've been flirted with by a patient, but this was certainly the only time that he was getting to me, forcing me to fight my urges. Because of this, I didn't dare call him out on it, fearing how he would drag me into his alluring ways. "Alright, first question. Tell me about your childhood."
"It was a miserable one. My parents were both freed slaves, but were penniless. Our home was basically a one-room shack. Even as a child I couldn't help but notice that everyone who looked like me lived like me while those with lighter skin lived happier lives, and thinking to myself that it wasn't fair. Just because I have darker skin that automatically meant I was worth less to society? And ever since then, I always made it my goal to make enough money and power to make all those who looked down upon me fear me."
Hearing his response snapped me out of my trance as I realized just whom exactly I was dealing with. "But wait, didn't you say that you're royal on your mother's side?"
"That was just a joke and some random shrunken head with a crown on it."
"Alright, fair enough. What about any love life?"
"There was one woman. She had the most beautiful face that I have ever seen. I was already in my thirties, but this woman was still young; couldn't have been more than around twenty. She was white, which meant that she was automatically out of my league socio-economically of course, but with that blond hair, blue eyes, and pale skin, how could anyone not fall for her?
"I still remember the first time I ever spoke to her. I approached her and asked her if she wanted a free magic show. She said yes, so I brought her into my voodoo emporium. I could tell she was frightened of me, but amused by my tricks. Speaking of tricks, I cast a spell on her. I gave her a heart-shaped amulet and pricked both her and my fingers against it, filling it up with our blood, so that when she wore it she would be blindly in love with me. It worked, and when I asked her to marry me she said yes. But alas, the spell wasn't permanent and the blood eventually drained. By the time this happened we were already married. I still remember it well, waking up to the sound of her scream, horrified to be in the same room as me let alone the same bed. I tried to get it to refill, but she wouldn't cooperate; she just screamed and tried to run away, threatening to call the police on me. I couldn't let her do that, so I cast another spell on her. I killed her by extracting her soul from her body and putting it in a jar. It's not like I enjoyed resorting to that, but the look on her face as she cowered in fear of me as if I were some sort of monster hurt me. I did it though so this way I would have her with me forever, but the more I watched that jar glow with her essence, the more guilt I felt. So eventually I released her soul into the air and watched as it filled the night sky, swearing that I would never lose myself to women ever again. That is however, unless I find a woman who would be willing to love me in return without using magic."
"What was this woman's name?"
"Evangeline."
I couldn't help but notice that there was a pattern going on. Most of the men who came in here tended to have tragic lost loves, while most of the women who came in tended to be attention-grabbing seductresses.
"Alright, so let's talk about your powers. How did you learn voodoo in the first place?"
"I wanted to learn voodoo as a means of gaining power. There were rumors of a sorceress who lived deep in the bayou, so I sought her out, hoping that she could teach me. It turned out the rumors were true, and there she was, blind as a bat. She was a kind, short woman, went by the name of Mama Odie. I remember she pricked my finger and stirred my drop of blood into her pot. She told me that my blood was capable of magic, but that I had darkness in my soul. When she said that I was afraid that she would send me away, but she told me that there was a chance of redemption. She asked me why I wanted to learn magic, and I told her it was to help my family and my people. Of course I never said my true intentions, so she was willing to teach me. She taught me the basics, but it wasn't enough.
"While I was studying as Mama Odie's apprentice, on the side I learned about voodoo and how to apply my skills in that field. As I studied, the one Loa that caught my attention the most was Baron Samedi. I followed and worshiped, and sure enough he answered my prayers. He came to me and told me that he was impressed with my skills, and we made a pact that as long as I was a servant to him and his 'friends' and didn't squander their gifts for myself, I could use them in return for whatever needs may be. Of course Mama Odie found out and was not too happy, condemning me for giving in to the darkness and cutting me off from her. Although I wasn't too upset, for I didn't need her anymore anyway."
"And let me guess, when you offered them the souls of everyone in New Orleans, it was nothing more than payment?"
"Pretty much, although both parties would have benefited from that. They get their payment and I would've gotten my life-long vengeance."
"Now let's talk about that for a second. You made it clear that you wanted fortune, but why the LaBouff's specifically? Was there perhaps any personal relationship there?"
"Honestly, I've never even officially met them. But because they are the epitome of my targeted hatred, they were the perfect victims."
"But when Naveen came to town…?"
"The prince was a pawn, nothing more."
"But why exactly did you turn him into a frog?"
"Because I wanted to take this beautiful man and turn him into something ugly and disgusting. After all, what woman would ever actually kiss a frog? Then again, I wasn't really expecting him to talk, so that may have backfired things a bit."
"Apparently Tiana fell for it. Speaking of which, what would you say your relationship with her is like?"
"Again, another pawn. Of course I barely knew her. When I met her in the cemetery that was the first time we had ever met."
"Then how did you know so much about her?"
"Mind-reading powers. I'll admit she was a pretty girl, but definitely not my type."
"So just out of curiosity, what happened after you were pulled in by your 'friends?'"
"I woke up here, all my powers gone and all my debts wiped away."
"And with your powers gone, what do you plan to do once you're free."
"I don't know. Maybe go back home to New Orleans or maybe travel a bit. Probably go back to doing parlor tricks for tips. I might continue my vengeance on the rich, white man the old-fashioned way without magic or attack Naveen and Tiana and plan on conquering Maldonia as its ruler. Who knows?"
"I see. Well Facilier, thank you for your time," I said closing my notebook and standing up.
"No, thank you pretty darling," he said standing up, handing me a business card. "Call me anytime you like if you want a good time." I tried my best to suppress my ovaries from exploding, as well as the creepiness of the thought of dating him, from that as he exited the room. He opened the door, but stopped to tip his hat and once again smile at me seductively. "Doctor…" With that he exited.
As soon as he left I sat down at my computer to see who was next. "Please let it be a woman, please let it be a woman," I said, hoping that having a female patient would help me get my mind off of him. "Yes," I sighed with relief when I saw that my next patient was in fact female. "Mother Gothel."
