I sat waiting as my next patient walked in. I looked up to see a beautiful middle-aged woman with long black curls, big blue eyes, and a velvet maroon dress. "Gothel," I said standing up and approaching her. "I'm Dr. Russell."
"Pleasure to meet you doctor," Gothel replied shaking my hand before sitting on the couch.
"If you don't mind I just have some questions to ask you."
"Not at all."
"Alright, first question. Tell me about your childhood."
"There's not much to tell really. I had a pretty average childhood, loving parents and whatnot."
"Really? Nothing you want to talk about? Nothing significant ever happen to you as you were growing up?"
Gothel made a face as she shrugged her shoulders, indicating that she really had nothing more to add. "Honestly, for how long ago it was I don't really remember too terribly much."
"Alright then, moving on. What about a love life?"
"Now that is something I can talk about."
"Do tell."
"I was a young woman, about sixteen or seventeen, when I met him, the most beautiful man I had ever laid my eyes on. I don't remember his name to be honest, but it doesn't matter. Lucky for me he returned my feelings, constantly telling me how beautiful I was. It wasn't long before he and I got married. We lived a happy life just the two of us, since neither one of us wanted children. Little did I know though that what he did later on would end up changing my life."
"What did he do?"
"We were married for about twenty-five years at that point; I was about in my early forties and he was in his fifties. I had just come home when I thought I heard a noise coming from the bedroom. I went upstairs and I saw something terrible: my husband cheating on me with a child."
"A child?" I asked in shock.
"Well not literally, but she might as well have been; must have been around fourteen or so. I blocked the door, knowing that they were too high up to try to escape. As I stood there in shock, the girl appeared to be just as shocked as I was; apparently my husband never told her that he was married. As soon as I saw her naked little body climb out of bed and get dressed, she approached me, trying to convince me that she honestly did not know and continuously apologizing. I knew I couldn't directly punish her, or at least not yet anyway, so I stepped aside and let her leave. Once she was gone I demanded an explanation, and my husband had told me that he had fallen in love with this girl, despite her being young enough to be his daughter. He then told me that he no longer loved me on account of my age and fading appearance and that he needed someone young and beautiful again to love. It turned out that those were the only two reasons he ever loved me, just like how those were the only two reasons he loved this new girl. I was in such a state of shock, that I didn't know what to do but leave. But after he said that, for the first time in my life I no longer felt beautiful, and that's when things started to go downhill.
"Later that night while he was asleep, I grabbed my knife and I killed the bastard in his sleep. Once he was dead, I looked through his papers and eventually found the girl's address, and I wrote a letter to her in his writing stating that he had successfully left me and told her to meet him the next day before sneaking to the girl's house and sliding it under the door. The next day she showed up when I appeared and told her that he was dead. She continued to repeatedly apologize to me, and tell me that she had come because she wanted to end things with him after finding out that he was married before asking me if I was going to kill her too. I pinned her against a tree, holding my knife to her neck, when I told her that no, I wasn't going to kill her, for I had something far worse planned. I was going to let her live, cursing her with the knowledge that she may be young and beautiful for the time being, but before she would know it, both of those would be gone instantly, and that if I killed her, she would never know the pain that he put me through, before letting her go and watching her run off.
Ever since then I hadn't been the same. No longer feeling beautiful, I felt like no matter where I went or what I did, I felt like everyone was always judging me for my hideous aging. All those faces watching me, I felt like I was falling into madness, and eventually I left town, never wanting to see another face, including my own, ever again, planning to live out my days alone in the forest."
"Alright, let's fast forward a bit later on to when you found the flower. How exactly did you find it?"
"I was wandering around the forest one night looking for food when I saw something bright falling from the sky. As quickly as I could I followed it, and found the flower."
"How did you know that it was a magic flower?"
"When I touched it, I saw it glow as the wrinkles in my hand began to magically disappear. Shocked, I removed my hand from the flower to examine it, only for the wrinkles to suddenly reappear. I tried touching it again, but nothing happened. From that moment I knew that I had to find a way to absorb its magic and make myself younger again. I tried everything I could, but I didn't dare move the flower, afraid that its magic would fade should it be plucked from the ground."
"So then how did you figure out the song?"
"I was trying to find a way to get the flower working when I just so happened to hum the song, and saw that it started glowing again. You see the song was a lullaby my mother used to sing to me as a child and even though I forgot the words I never forgot the tune. So I hummed it a little louder, putting my hands over the flower, and felt its magic as I noticed that I was magically becoming younger. When I was done singing, I ran to the closest body of water to look at my reflection to see that I was now a young woman again. Afraid that anyone else would find it, I hid the flower so I could have its power for myself."
"With your new-found youth did you decide to try and find love again?"
"Goodness, no. After what happened with my husband, I never loved another man again. However I did take advantage of my regained youth and of course had some fun, sleeping with any young man who wasn't looking for anything serious. But before I knew it, another fifty years had passed by and I had become old again. I returned to my flower hoping that it was still there, and it was. So I sang the song again, this time adding lyrics, and it made me young again, only this time I wasn't as young as last time, and although not by much, it seemed like I was aging quicker than last time. I noticed the pattern of the more I used it, it stopped making me younger than my thirties, and I would age quicker, as in I would age by a decade or so within a matter of days rather than years. But by that time I had already been using the flower for about a two hundred years or so."
"Alright, so let's fast forward some more and talk about Rapunzel. Did you ever actually love her, even though you said that you didn't want kids?"
"Of course I did, I raised her. I know I said that I didn't want to be a mother, but for how badly I needed her, it was inevitable. Did I exploit her magic for my own personal needs, yes, but that's the only reason why I stole her in the first place. But at the same time she was my daughter and I wanted her to be happy."
"Even though you locked her in the tower her whole life never letting her go outside."
"Well yes. But besides that I still wanted her to be happy by giving her a loving home so that she wouldn't want to leave."
"What about when she met Flynn Rider? Were you really trying to protect her or did you just want her back?"
"What do you think? I couldn't risk losing her! But at the same time when I saw how happy this boy made her, I did think back to my own experience and knew that if he was anything like my husband he would do the same thing to her."
"And if you loved her as much as you claim you did, how come you chained her up and forced her to go with you rather than letting her be happy?"
"Because at that point I knew that it was too late; she was no longer my daughter, but my possession."
"Alright, last question. If you were to go back, what would you do?"
"There's nothing I could do at this point. Her hair has been cut, so all the magic is gone. I could never bring myself to kill Rapunzel, I mean she was willing to go with me in exchange for the boy's life, which I granted, so she never actually did anything. However, I could extract revenge and kill Flynn Rider. After all, it's his fault that I died and that Rapunzel's magic is gone. If it wasn't for him, none of this would've happened."
"Okay, I think I have everything I need. Thank you Gothel."
"Thank you for your time doctor," Gothel said as she stood up and shook my hand before out.
Once she was gone I sat down at my computer to see who was next. When I saw whom it was I couldn't help but groan, knowing what a pain in the ass this next patient would be. "Turbo."
