Chapter 13
It's Not A Wedding Without A Little Drama (Part 2 of 3)
"Let me just confirm what you just said," Spencer said before taking a deep breathe."So you're my brother."
Jason took a deep breath before nodding his head."Yeah. Your dad is my dad too."
"How did this happen? When did this happen?"
"My mom told me it was few years back and your dad, well, our dad slept with her and they had me." He explained as simply as he could.
Spencer just couldn't believe it. She knew that her father had some fidelity problems, but she didn't know this is how it all started. She wondered if her mother or Melissa knew about Jason. Her father couldn't have kept this secret to himself all these years.
When Jason offered to give her a ride back to the hotel he said that he wanted to talk. The car ride conversations started with him saying how close their families were at one point until they moved. How he was upset that he never got to know Spencer better over the years. He was just dropping little clues until they got back to the hotel. But when he parked his car in the parking lot, he just let it all come pouring out.
"Does anyone else know?" She questioned and she noticed the sympathetic look on his face.
"Your mom knows and my dad knows about what our parents did. Ali knows too, but Melissa doesn't." He said and let her digest that before he continued."I was gonna tell you, but you left town. Then I find you here and I knew it was a sign to tell you. And I'm glad I did because I wouldn't want to miss my little sisters wedding."
His words brought tears to her eyes. Jason didn't have to get to know her, but the truth is that he really did want to know her and be apart of her life. She couldn't believe she had a brother and was just know finding out about him after all these years.
"I'm glad you did tell me," She whispered with a smile as she wiped away her tears."because I wouldn't want my brother to miss my wedding either." He laughed, but still in the dark, Spencer could see the tears in his eyes too.
"I, uh, I should get going. I promised that I'd be back in time to take Ali out tonight for a little while." He said with a shrug before turning back to her."But I'll call you tomorrow."
"Yeah, I'd like that and maybe you'd join me and the girls for lunch?"
He smiled and nodded his head."Goodnight, Spencer."
"Goodnight, Jason." She sent him one last smile before getting out of his car and heading inside the hotel.
He was sitting on the couch in her hotel living room. He was sitting hunched over, his hands wrapped up together as he rested his chin on them. He was angry, hurt, confused, and drunk. Toby knew that this was a bad idea to confront Spencer in the state he was in now, but this was something he couldn't just hold off.
He didn't want to, but he asked for Alison's help to take him to the front desk to find out the girls room number. Of course they told him because his name was on the credit they used to pay for the room. Alison gladly escorted him to the room before leaving him alone, but promising to see him again.
When he was finally alone, he just let the tears spill from his eyes. He was crying because he was tired. Tired of all the hurt and pain that they'd been through. Maybe this was just a sign telling him that love didn't conquer all. Maybe it was true that they wouldn't last forever. Well, he was about the find out because he heard the door open and he looked over to see his wife enter the room.
She smiled at him instantly when she was it was Toby."Hey, you! You have know idea how much I've missed you today." She walked over to him, but her smile faded when she saw his bloodshot eyes and solemn face."What's wrong?"
He played with his ring on his finger and sadly smirked before looking back at her."So when were you gonna tell me?"
"Tell you what?"
"I thought we weren't gonna keep secrets from each other." He said before he chuckled to himself in disbelief."But you've been keeping the biggest secret from me for all these years."
"Toby..." She eased down to sit next to him, but when she sat, he stood up and walked towards the kitchen to put some distance between them. He had never acted so cold to her before.
"What happened to our baby? Huh?" He questioned and watched as the color drained from her face. That was all the conformation he needed."Yeah, you didn't think that I'd find out, but I did."
She did her best to try and stop the tears, but she couldn't contain them."It's not what you think. You don't know the whole story."
"Then tell me the damn story, Spencer! You might as well do it now because I've spent six years in the dark about the whole thing."
"Look, I couldn't tell you because you wouldn't understand." She said calmly while wiping the fallen tears from her face. He crossed his arms over his chest and his face was as hard as stone."Fine, you want the truth then I'll tell you the truth. I screwed up."
His jaw clenched before he spoke again."Tell me everything."
She took a deep breath and stood up to pace the living room."It was our first time and I told you not to use protection I thought that since I was on the pill it would be okay. You got me pregnant." She finally said the words and Toby felt like his heart had stopped for a second."I didn't find out until after we broke up and I went back home. I was pregnant for eight weeks before I decided to tell you. But when I was going to tell you...I...I-"
"You what?" He questioned before a thought popped in his head."Did you...did you get rid of our baby because you hated me that much!?"
"No! Toby I would never do that." She yelled back at him, now angry because of his accusations.
"Then tell me what you did!"
"I lost the baby, okay!" She yelled before those words made her heart drop down into her knees. She wished that she'd never have to relive this, but she had to."I was on my way to tell you and I...I fell down the stairs and lost the baby."
He was seething with anger and hurt. He had lost his mother, he almost lost his father, Emily could be dying, he had lost Sky for the second, and now he found out that he had lost his baby too. He couldn't deal with all of this. It wasn't how his life was supposed to go.
"Toby, look at me," She finally approached him, but he didn't raise his head to look at him. She tried to hold his hand, but he pulled it out of her reach."I didn't know how to tell you and I didn't think you'd be able to handle it with what's going on."
His wiped his tears from his face, before looking up at her with cold eyes."You are so selfish."
"What?"
"You're a selfish liar. You probably didn't even want the baby and you were just gonna use it to get back at me because of Alison. You're just like Kate." She smacked him hard across his face, but she didn't feel guilty about it. Even when he looked at her with shock and hurt in his eyes. He reached up to touch his cheek to try and soothe the stinging.
"That's not how it is." She insisted.
"You talk about how you did this to protect me and how I couldn't handle it right now. Spencer, you had six years to tell me this!" He yelled before pushing past her to pace the living floor because it was best that she stay far away right now."Did you think about me?Did you stop for one second to think about how I'd feel when I'd found out." He asked, but his rage was getting the better of of him. He kicked the hotels television, sending it crashing into the wall.
"Toby, stop!" Spencer called out to him when he want for the lamp to throw it, but it didn't stop him from throwing it at the bedroom door."I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. What did you want me to do?"
"What did I want you to do? I'd don't know, Spence, maybe you could have told me." He shook his head rapidly as he looked for the next thing he could break, but he had broken and punched everything he could. He walked up to her, his chest heaving up and down."Im glad that I can finally see you for who you are now.
"I couldn't tell you! I couldn't look you in the eye after I knew that I failed you. That I had failed us."
"I'm just really sick and tired of this. The lies, the secrets, the drama, the arguments, and the lost goes on. None of this happened when we-"
"When we were just friends." She finished."Maybe that's our problem. We thought it could work when it really wasn't meant to be."
"What are you saying?"
She sighed softly before running a hand across her face and through her hair."I think we were doomed from the start."
Caleb, Holden, and Ezra walked up to the girls room early the next morning. Toby never came back to the room and they were pretty sure that he went looking for Spencer. When they got there they noticed something strange.
"What the hell?" Caleb muttered under his breath once he saw that the hotel door was cracked open.
Caleb pushed the door open, so they all could enter. The sight they saw made them lose their breath. The whole hotel room was destroyed and there had to be broken glass almost everywhere.
"Aria?" Ezra called out for her once he saw how the room looked because he was worried about her."Hanna? Are you girls here?"
"This does not look good, guys." Holden commented when he saw some spots of blood on the carpet."I think we should call the police."
"I agree." Caleb said before pulling out his phone to call, but before he could hit dial, a voice sounded from the doorway.
"What happened in here?" They all turned towards the doorway and let out a sigh of relief when they saw Hanna and Aria standing there.
Caleb went over to Hanna and pulled her into his arm. Ezra did the same and embraced Aria into his arms.
"Thank, god, you're alright." Ezra said as he kissed the top of Aria's head. He looked over at Hanna before saying."Were you guys here when this happened?"
"No, we spent the whole night out because we lost track of time. But what happened to our room?"
"We don't know." Holden said as he looked around at the destroyed room."Where are Toby and Spencer?"
"We don't know. We know that Spencer left the club with Jason, but you don't think he has anything I do with? Hanna asked, but Aria spoke up next.
"No, I remember seeing Jason at a different club that we went to. He said he just dropped Spencer off and that he was out with Ali."
"Then where are they?" Caleb asked, but everyone just looked around at each other because they didn't know what to say.
"You don't think they'd run off again? Like they did when they got married the first time?" Ezra suggested.
"No, this wedding was too important to them and their family." Aria explained."They wouldn't just leave."
"Alright, why don't you girls go get changed and then we'll go out and look for them for a little while. If we don't fine them before tonight, then we can call the police. Deal?" Holden said and everyone agreed to the idea.
While the girls went to go change, the guys took it upon themselves to clean up the hotel room a little but. They cleaned up the glass and all the broken objects before discarding them into the trash. There was going to be a huge bill for all the destroyed property. They were almost finished when the girls reemerged from the bedroom.
"We won't have to go looking for them." Hanna said meekly as she held up a folded piece of paper.
"What is that?" Caleb asked as they gathered around the girls.
"It's a note," Aria said and everyone turned to her and held up another folder piece of paper."that's the note that Spencer left for us and here's the note that Toby left for us."
"What did they say?" Ezra asked.
"That they couldn't do it anymore and that they just left. They said they were sorry to all of us."
"This just doesn't make sense. They were fine yesterday and today they broke up? How does that happen?"
"I can tell you how it happened." Hanna said and shrugged her shoulders."He found out a secret and it was a secret that had been kept too long."
Toby was waiting around in the airport, just waiting for something to happen. He was hungover, he was sad, and he was ashamed. His fight with Spencer escalated further than he had intended. Now, he was just a broken man, wandering around an airport and without a place to go. The things he has said to her last night, some were his real feelings and others were fueled by his drunken state.
Either way, he was without a wife and he didn't know where she went. After he had said that all of their problems started because they should have stayed friends in the first place. And she seemed to agree with him. So, he stood motionless in the destroyed hotel room while she brushed past him to pack her stuff.
Before she left, she stood in front of him again. She leaned up to gently peck his cheek for what might be for the last time. And said those words she had even reporting the whole night, but he wouldn't listen.
"I'm so sorry, Toby." She whispered to him.
He watched her turn away from him and pull her ring off her finger. She placed it onto what was left of the coffee table. She shut the door quietly behind her and Toby raced over to grab her wedding ring. He picked up and placed it into his pocket before taking off his own and joined it with hers in his pocket.
Now, here he was wondering around an airport. He was just waiting until he either got tired or security kicked him out. He plopped down into a seat in an empty section. He closed his eyes and tried to ignore the buzzing phone coming from his pocket.
"I told you I would see you again." He heard her a girl, but he knew who it was because of her voice and what she had said yesterday at the bar.
He sighed before opening his eyes and looking to his right to see Alison sitting next to him."What do you want, Ali? Aren't you supposed to be with your family?"
She smiled at him before pulling a magazine out of her purse and flipping through it."I was, but I decided to leave early. I never like to stay in one place for too long."
"Then where are you headed?"
"I don't know," She said in an amused tone as her eyes still scanned the magazine."but I don't think it'll be Rosewood or anywhere close to there."
He chuckled lightly in spite of himself."So you're leaving Nevada, but don't know where you're going? Are you sure you're not just following me?"
"Oh, please, I've been over you for years," She said but then turned to him with a serious look on her face."but I was worried about you when I say you sitting here. Your eyes are red, clothes are winkled, and you're hands are a little bloody. I take it that you had a pretty wild night?"
"Something like that. Actually, I think it was one of the worst nights of my life."
"Is that why you're running from it?" She questioned and he raised an eyebrow at her."All I'm saying is that problems don't disappear if you run from them."
He leaned back to look at her with squinted eyes."Are you trying to give me advice right now? Are you seriously trying to help me?"
She shrugged her shoulders."I'm not always, so bad. I used to really care about Spencer, Emily, Hanna, and Aria very much. I still do, but I've made too many mistakes and I deserve to not have their friendship."
"Well, I'm just tired. I'm too tired to be dealing with all of this. That's why I'm getting out of Rosewood and taking another job. But before then I need a little vacation, a little time for myself." He said and that seemed to make Alison smile for some reason.
"Well, then," She passed her magazine to him. He finally realized it was a travel magazine that had all these different places that people loved to travel to."close your eyes and pick a place to go on a vacation."
"Really?"
"Yep, we'll make it into a game. You pick a place and I'll do the same."
He couldn't believe he was siting here with Alison and was actually having a normal conversation with her."Alright, I'll pick first."
He closed his eyes tight, he twirled his fingers around above the magazine for a few seconds. After waiting for the right time, he placed his finger tip on the magazine and opened his eyes.
"It looks like you're going to Florida." Alison commented as she took the magazine from him. He felt like he was gonna be sick, he couldn't go back to Florida and the fact that he was supposed to be getting married there in three days."And no you can't back out of the place you picked to go."
He groaned as he watched her close her eyes to make he pick. It only took a few seconds before her finger hit the magazine and she smiled. He leaned over to see, but she pulled it out if his eyes view and stood up.
"Hey, wait, aren't you going to tell me where you pick?" He asked.
"We never agreed that we had to tell each other." She glanced at the watch on her wrist before looking back at him."You might wanna get a plan ticket soon before it's too late."
"I can't go back there, Alison. I just can't."
"Toby, everything happens for a reason and maybe this is a good thing that you go there. Don't let your stubbornness get in the way of your heart or else you'll end up like me." She smiled weakly at him before continuing."I really hope you make the right choices, Toby. Spencer means a lot to me, all of the girls do, so take care of them for me." She winked at him before walking off and leaving Toby with his thoughts.
Maybe Alison was right and he couldn't believe he was actually listening to her. This had to be a dream, but it wasn't because he would be dreaming of Spencer in his arms right now. Maybe that was the point that Alison was trying to get across, that Spencer is too great to let go. Either way, he was heading to Florida to either make things right or make things worse.
