Chapter 14
It's Not A Wedding Without A Little Drama Part (3 of 3)
Spencer loved the way her feet felt in the sand. She loved the way the ocean breeze just captivated her sinuses and made her feel at peace. She loved the way the ocean looked in the moonlight. Yeah, she loved the beaches of Florida, even though it left some bad memories.
She looked over her shoulder at the beach house behind her. Her family had rented it for her upcoming wedding. It seemed pretty clear that when she arrived there in tears that the wedding was gonna have a little delay. Her family and Emily bombarded her with questions as soon as she got there, but Jason stepped in to stop them.
Jason was the one who rescued her last night. After her fight with Toby and leaving the hotel, she walked around for hours with a suitcase until she called Jason at a pay phone. He picked her up and didn't ask any questions until he was sure she was calmed down. They talked about and Spencer convinced him to taking her to the airport and Jason just stuck by her side. Besides, Spencer thought it was time to clue the rest of the family in on the big secret about Jason. Everyone took it pretty well and then they dropped all questions about her and Toby.
Now, here she was. Standing outside in the darkness, staring out into the open sea. She took a seat down into the sand and brought her knees to her chest. She was thinking about him again and how his eyes would look magnificent in this lighting. She missed him, so much and she felt empty without him.
She was still staring out at the sea when she heard footsteps coming from behind her. She didn't see them, but she knew that two people had sat down beside her.
"Beautiful night out tonight." Jason muttered as he stretched his legs out in front of him and looked at Spencer for a reaction. But she was still just staring at the ocean.
Melissa cleared her throat before speaking."Yeah, it is. Don't you think so, Spence?"
"Please don't do this you guys." Spencer muttered and thought she was about to cry again. But it seemed like she didn't have anymore left in her.
"Why? We're just talking about how nice it is-"
"You're trying to get me to talk and then you'll ask about me and Toby." Spencer interrupted Melissa in a somewhat sharp tone and immediately regretted."I'm sorry."
"No, it's okay because you caught us. We want to know what happened. What did he do that was so bad that it stopped your wedding?" Jason asked and Spencer sadly smirked before shaking her head.
She sighed before glance at both of them and said."He didn't do anything, I did. I kept a secret from him and I was wrong for it. I screwed up."
Melissa sucked in breath when realization hit her."He found out? About the baby?" Spencer just nodded her. Jason wanted to ask about the baby, but knew that it wasn't the best time to do so.
"Well, whatever happened," Jason said as he took her hand in his and gave it a right squeeze."we're here for you. And we always will be."
Melissa grabbed her other hand and squeezed it."Yeah, Jason's right. We're gonna be here for you want us to be or not."
Spencer smiled and it was the first genuine smile since her fight with Toby."I want you guys to be there for me and I'm gonna be there for you."
Melissa wrapped her arm around her sister and held her close. Jason extended his arm out to hold both Spencer and Melissa. And Spencer rested her head on Jason's shoulder. This was what felt right to her. This is another place where she felt safe, where she felt at home.
Toby rolled out of bed the next morning feeling a little bit better. He had arrived in Florida sometime after dark and went straight to his beach house. It was hard to walk through that door since the last time he was here with Spencer. And ironically, they broke up here and he was now here alone. He didn't even sleep in the master bedroom because, well, it would just hurt too much. So last night, he passed by the master bedroom and headed for one of the many guest bedrooms.
He went downstairs to go to the kitchen to make some breakfast. Things were eerily quiet and he hated that because Spencer's voice our laughter always broke the silence. He didn't have her, so he opted for turning on the radio all the way up on high. He wished Snow and Tiger were with him, but they had to stay behind at a kennel until after the wedding.
He made his breakfast and sat down at the table to eat. As he was eating, his phone started buzzing. He didn't have to pick it up to see who it was. It was either one of the guys or the girls calling him. They had been calling him since yesterday morning, but he couldn't talk right now. He decided to get his mind off of all that's been going on.
So after he ate breakfast, he showered and got dressed. He walked out of his front door and just started walking. He didn't have a destination. He didn't know when he'd be back. He just wanted to clear his head for a few hours. Eventually, his feet lead him to a beach. He didn't know exactly where he was, but it didn't matter.
He slipped his socks and shoes off and picked them up before continuing his walk on the beach. He loved coming out here during the summers when he was a little kid. His mother would take him to the beach almost everyday, even when she wasn't feeling well because she knew that would make him happy.
He passed by a few family's and his heart ached when he saw a baby wobbled onto its legs and into it's fathers awaiting arms. This made him wonder what his and Spencer's baby would have looked like. He wondered if it was going to be a girl or a boy. He wondered what they would have named it.
"Toby!" His thoughts were interrupted when heard someone calling his name from further down the beach.
He squinted his eyes to see further, but the sun was in his eyes. It looked like Spencer because of the dark brown hair and similar skin complexion. So, he picked up the pace and started walking in the direction as the woman calling his name. As he got closer and closer his heart pounded because he was hoping it was her. Expect, when he got close enough he could tell that it wasn't Spencer, but Emily.
"Oh, hey, Em." He said solemnly. She didn't say anything, she just took a few steps closer to him and smacked his cheek. It stung like hell and Toby immediately reached out to touch it."I know I deserved that."
"Yeah, you did and you probably deserved a lot worse." She said angrily before taking a deep breath to calm herself."Look, I'm not gonna hit you anymore because you're my friend too. If I did then Spencer would be pissed at me for beating up the groom."
"It doesn't matter. We broke up and she doesn't care about what I do anymore."
Emily chuckled slightly as she shook her head at him."Why are the cute ones always, so clueless?" She gestured for him to follow her as she walked back down the beach to go back to Paige."If she didn't care about you, then she wouldn't have been bawling her eyes all day yesterday. If she didn't care about you, then she wouldn't be murmuring your name in her sleep. If she didn't really care about you, then she would have shut down the wedding by now, but she didn't."
The last sentence really caught his attention."She didn't? She didn't cancel the wedding yet?"
"Nope," Emily stopped a few feet away from Paige."I guess she was hoping that you guys could work something or something. And you need to. You need to fight for her because you both have been too much together to just let it all go."
"And how do I do that? Until I saw you I didn't even know that she was here? Where is she?"
"I can't tell you is right now because her family might try to kill you, but I can tell you where she'll be tonight. I'll text you where to go and you just show and make things right. Okay?"
He nodded his head and pulled her into a friendly hug."Thanks, Em."
"Alright," She retreated from his hug, but still smiled at him."you should go get ready for tonight."
He nodded his head and waved to Paige before walking off in the other direction. He had only one shot at this tonight and he wasn't going to screw it up. What happened in Vegas was just a mistake. A huge mistake and now he saw what it truly was. It was a test of their relationship and they had seemed to have failed, but this test wasn't over.
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and called Caleb. His phone was answered almost immediately.
"Toby, where the hell are you!?" Caleb questioned.
"Look, I need you guys to get on a plane and head down to Florida right now." Toby rushed out and his next words put a smile on his face."We've got a wedding to finish."
Spencer didn't really feel like going out tonight. She had a lot of things on her mind including the wedding that was happening tomorrow and how she didn't even have a groom. She came up with a plan to publicly announce it to everyone when the ceremony was set to begin. That's why she didn't want to go out tonight because she had to do that the tomorrow afternoon.
Still, Meliissa and Jason basically begged her to go out. Her parents pushed her as well to go out for the night, but Spencer wasn't budging. The thing that got Spencer to go was Emoly. Emily talked about how she was so excited to be here and all the things she wanted to see before she had to leave. She begged Spencer with puppy dog eyes and said she wanted to do some fun stuff before she grew sick again. That's what caused Spencer to crack and get out of bed to go with them.
So, here she was tonight in The Magic Kingdom with Jason, Wren, Melissa, Taylor, Emily, and Paige. Spencer's heart ached when she saw the smile Taylor got on her face when she saw all the bright lights around her. It made her wonder if hers and Toby's child would have been that excited by their surroundings. It caused a frown to slip into her face, but it isn't went away when she saw how much fun everyone was having.
It was true that being back here caused a little trouble for her. It's been a few years since her and Toby had came here, but the memories are still there. And the memories still hurt. She wondered what he was doing now. Did he move out of the house? Is he with someone else who didn't lie to him? Did he already call his lawyer to get divorce papers? Was he thinking about her like she was thinking about him?
"Spence, get that glum look off your face." Paige teased her, but Spencer only weakly smiled at her.
"I'm trying it's just that there's not much for me to smile about, you know." She said with a shrug and continued walking with everyone else.
"Don't worry, Spencer," Wren said as he pointed over to Cinderella's Castle and Spencer felt her stomach do flips."I'm sure the fireworks show will cheer you up."
"Great." She said unenthusiastically, but still followed them as they went to go join everyone else to get a good view.
Spencer noticed that after she had found a good spot, she had lost everyone else. She was alone now and didn't know where to look for them. People were all around her so she didn't even bother to try. She was starting to go grow impatient because she really just wanted to see this and then go, but the show didn't start yet.
"You have got to be kidding me." She groaned to herself and took a deep breath to call herself."How much longer are fireworks gonna take?"
She felt two arms wrap around her waist. She was scared for a moment, but then she recognized how those arms and hands felt. It was an all too familiar embrace for her to ever forget.
"Just wait for it." He whispered into her ear, causing a shiver to run through her whole body. She leaned her head back against his chest to look up at the sky. And almost only a second after he whispered that into her ear the fireworks show began.
"I'm sorry." They both whispered to each other at the same. He turned her around in his arms and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"You don't need to be sorry. I should be sorry for all those horrible things I said to you." He said and she looked at his sincere face and could see that he was on the verge of tears."I never, ever want to talk to like that again. I don't ever want to behave like I'm some animal. I could have hurt you that night and I don't like that person I was. I should have listened to you because you've had to deal with the lose of our baby for six years by yourself. I'm sorry."
She caressed his cheek with her hand."I have a lot to be sorry for too, Toby. I should have told you along time ago about the baby, but I was afraid that you'd be so mad at me that you'd leave me. I've only ever wanted us to be happy and I know it's been a tough road for us. What I'm really trying to ask is if we still have a chance? Do you still believe in us?"
He smiled at her and nodded his head."I can never give up on us."
She smiled at him and leaned up to kiss him, but he pulled back. She was a little disappointed when she didn't get a kiss and the fact that he unwrapped his body from hers. But he made up for it when he got down on one knee and grabbed her hand.
"Spencer Cavanaugh," He pulled her wedding ring out from his pocket and held it up to her."will you still marry me tomorrow. If it's not too late?"
"Yes, of course I will!" She said and when he stood up, she launches herself into his arms for a kiss. She missed this, she missed him and how a simple kiss could posses her so much.
"Okay, break it up!" Spencer and Toby broke apart when they heard Hanna's voice yell out to them."I'm happy you guys are back together, but you're breaking the rules. It's bad luck to see the bride before the wedding, so say your goodbyes until tomorrow."
Spencer turned back to Toby."You planned this?" She looked over in Hanna's direction again and saw Emily, Melissa, Paige, Wren, Taylor, Jason, Caleb, Holden, Ezra, and Aria standing around watching them."You made them take me out and told everyone to fly down, so that you could apologize?"
"Yep, I did it for us because this wedding is gonna happen tomorrow." He leaned down to whisper his next words in her ear because they were just for her."But now I'm thinking I should have called Hanna and the others in the morning, so that I can take you home with me tonight."
She blushed because she knew exactly what he was implying. She leaned up to kiss him one once more.
"Don't worry I'll see you tomorrow at the wedding." She pecked his lips once more before Hanna and the girls dragged her away.
"You have got to be kidding me." Toby said as he adjusted his tie one more time, but it still seemed crooked and he wanted everything needed to be perfect.
The sun was in the sky and the birds were singing, it was the perfect day for a beach wedding. The wedding was going to be on the beach, but was right behind the church which, if they needed to, they would move the wedding inside. Things couldn't go wrong today because they only had once to get it right.
"Need some help with that?" Toby turned around to see his father standing in the doorway. His father was doing much nowadays and he was really glad his family could make it out for his big dad.
"If you don't mind."
His walked over to him and started to work his magic on his bow tie. After a few moments, his father turned him around to face the mirror and the tie looked perfect.
Toby smiled."Thanks, dad. I really appreciate your help with his."
"You're welcome, but I just didn't come in here to help with your tie. I wanted to talk with you about something."
"Sure." Toby went over to shut the door before turning back and sitting down with his father."What did you want to talk about?"
"I just wanted to let you know that your mother would have been proud of you,"
"Dad-" Toby tried to get him to stop because he didn't want to trouble his father with the memories of his deceased wife.
"No, she would have and she would have love Spencer too. I know if she were here now, she'd be talking your ear off about having grandkids soon." His father said and Toby knew that his mother would do something exactly like that."I just want you to know I'm proud of you too. And I just wanted to let you know that you are the greatest achievement of our lives. I love you, son."
Toby's voice cracked as he spoke."I love you too, dad." He pulled his father in for a right hug and he felt like a kid again when he and his father used to have talks like this. This is what he needed today to calm his nerves. A knock at the door broke their moment.
Holden walked, but stopped when he saw Toby and his father."Am interrupting something?"
"No, we were just finishing up. What's up?" Toby asked and Holden held up his tie.
"Well, me and the guys need help with our ties. Mr. Cavanaugh, do you think you can give us a hand?"
"Sure, just tell them to come on in and I'll help them. But hurry because it's almost time."
On the other side of the church a similar dilemma was happening in Spencer's dressing room. Expect, she didn't need help getting ready, but she needed help calming down her nerves. She had been throwing up all morning, but her mother said she was just nervous. But Spencer didn't feel like throwing up on her groom today.
"Spence, just breath and relax. Remember I went through the same thing when Caleb and I were about to get married." Hanna said and Spencer remembered all too well about Hanna's panic attack before her wedding. They thought they were gonna have to call an ambulance for that girl.
"I know I just I can't for some reason. I'm feeling sick and in really hot and-"
"Spencer, just focus on what a happy day it is today. You get to marry the man of your dreams." Aria encouraged and that seemed to calm her down a little, but not a lot.
"Do you want me to get mom?" Melissa suggested, but Spencer shook her head. She didn't need her mother right now. She needed to get a grip.
Emily stood up and grabbed Spencer's arm to lead her over to a seat."Just sit here and try to calm down. Think about happy things, think about Toby."
Spencer closed her eyes and started thinking about Toby. Her thoughts lead her all the way back to when he was just the boy who climbed into his window. She still remembers his cute boyish face and shy smile. It brought a smile to her face, but as she was starting to calm down a knock came from the door.
She opened her eyes to see her father coming with his hand covering his eyes.
"Are you ladies decent?"
"Yeah, we're already ready, so you can open your eyes." Melissa said.
He removed his hand from his eyes and fully stepped into the room."Can you girls step out for a moment? I need to speak with Spencer alone."
"Sure, but just remember that we've only got twenty minutes left." Aria reminded as her and the girls piled out of the room. Peter closed the door behind them before going over to sit next to his daughter on the couch.
"Wanna tell me what's bothering you, Spence?" Peter asked and she couldn't help the laugh that escaped her lips.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Yes. I can always tell when you're at your best and when you're freaking out." He teased."Your mother does the same thing when she's nervous. Melissa too."
She looked over at him with a look of interest."Really? What do they do to get over their nervousness?"
"What every Hastings does."
She rolled her eyes at that."Let me guess, they suck it up and be a Hastings?"
"No, we think about how good we'll feel once we've achieved out goal. And Spencer this a pretty big thing you're about to achieve."
She moaned and leaned her head on her fathers shoulder."Then why can't I stop feeling like I'm going to puke every ten seconds?"
"Because you're in love. Love does that to you and you're about to take that big leap in a relationship with the person that you love." He said and what he was saying was finally starting to make since to her."You love Toby so much that all that love and all those other emotions are rushing through you. You just have to get control of them and flip them, so that you're seeing the big picture. And the big picture is that you're in for a lifetime of happiness with Toby."
She leaned up to place a gentle kiss on her fathers cheek."Thanks, dad. I really needed to hear that."
"I'm glad that I could be here to say it." He smiled and kissed the top of her head."I love you, Spencer, no matter what happens or who you marry. You'll always be my little girl."
Spencer pulled back to fully hug her father. And it was a tight hug like those ones he used to give her back in the day. It felt right to have that it at this moment. A knock on the door broke them apart and when the door opened it was her mother who stepped inside the room this time.
"It's time. Are you ready?" Veronica said and Spencer exchanged a look with her father before nodding her head. It was finally time.
Toby waited nervously for Spencer to come out. He was fearing the worst like she had ran. That she had stood him up at the altar. Or that she changed he mind about them.
He looked back at Caleb, who was the best man, with a worried look on his face. Caleb sent him a look telling him not to worry about it. But how could he not worry? He looked over at Melissa, who was the matron of honor, with a questioning look. But sadly all she did was shrug her shoulders.
Toby looked out at all the people in their seats as they murmured. He would hate to send all these people packing without having a wedding, but time was ticking by. And to too it all of the sky wasn't looking too sunny anymore. Toby was about to walk back inside the church when the music began to play and everyone stood up.
His heart finally stopped pounding in his chest, but when he saw Spencer step through the doors of the church, his heart started pounding again. He guessed it was true what people said when a woman looked their most beautiful in a wedding dress or pregnant. And right now, she looked absolutely beautiful.
She looked, so beautiful that it brought tears to his eyes. When she finally made it down the stairs of the church and her heels hit the sand reality set in for Toby. When they got married in city hall it didn't compare to a moment like this. She was making her way closer and closer to him.
When she was finally in from of him, he almost forgot to shake Mr. Hastings had when he handed her off to him. When he sat down, so did everyone else and now all eyes were on Spencer and Toby. But to Spencer an Toby it just felt like it was the both of them.
Toby held both of her hands in held and gave them a right squeeze. She smiled at him and he swore his melted just a little bit more for her. It was nearing closer and closer to the part of the vows and Toby was nervous. He hadn't wrote anything, so he was gonna speak from his heart.
He cleared his throat before speaking."We've known each other since we were both fourteen years old and here we are now at twenty-four. That means we've know each other for ten years and have been daring for six. If you asked me I'd say we beat the odds. I'd say that we were meant to be. We've been through ups and downs, but we've always found a way back to each other. That's how I know that what we have is real. You're the only woman I've ever thought about marrying or having kids with. You're the one I want to provide for. You're the one I want to come home to at night. You're the one for me. Plain and simple, there's no one else or anything on this earth that could break us. I love you, Spencer."
Spencer wiped away the few tears that were falling down her face. She got it together because it was here turn now."You've always been my safe place to land and I've never had that before. You're the first person I think about when I wake up and go to sleep. You're right we've been through a lot and I think this is finally the time when we get to be happy. And I don't just love you because you're smart enough to kick my ass at scrabble," That last part earned a few laughs from the guests and from Toby."no, I love you because you're kind. I love you because you always put me first. I life you because you love me for me. I know I can never love any as much as you because no one even comes close. I love you forever and always."
The vows were said and done and the wedding was coming to a close. And there was only one thing left to do.
"You may now kiss the bride."
And Toby kissed her. He kissed her with passion and love. He kissed her like he hasn't seen her in years. Because he just want kissing Spencer anymore. He was kissing his wife Spencer.
Halfway through their kiss is when it happened. The sky began to rumble and it came pouring down outside. People were scrambling to get inside the church, but Toby and Spencer didn't make a run for shelter. He grabbed her hand and they started running down the beach. They could hear in the distance that people were calling after them, but it was their day. And besides they could always meet up with them at the reception.
When they were finally far enough from the crowd, Toby stopped running and pulled Spencer into his arms. He whisked her up into his arms and spun around as he kissed her and kissed her and kissed her.
"Why is it that every time I go to wedding with you, Mr. Cavanaugh, that we get caught in the rain?" Spencer teased as the just stood on the empty beach not focusing on the rain, but each other.
He shrugged before smiling."I think the rain is good luck for us. I think being in the rain is our thing."
"Our thing." Spencer tested the word out and she loved the way it sounded.
"Now, Mrs. Cavanaugh, there is something you must do with you're new husband."
"And what is that."
"Dance with me. Right here. Right now."
She nodded her head and he pecked her lips before setting he back down on the sand. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he pulled her flush against him with his arms securely around we waist.
And they danced. They dance in the pouring rain, not caring about their surrounding. Or the fact that were being drenched in water. They didn't even have any music, so the beating of their hearts was their stereo and now their hearts were in sync again. Everything was perfect again. Well, at least for now.
Review for me? I really wanna know what you guys think of this chapter.
