Chapter 15
Happiness
2 months later...
Spencer's eyes fluttered open as the sun shine through the window and down on her face. She smiled to herself because she knew it was gonna be another great day for her. She reached over to find Toby's body, but sadly he wasn't there. She finally opened her eyes to see that his side of the bed had already been made up all ready. He's been getting up every morning at the crack of dawn since they've moved to Nevada, so that he could be on time for work.
Yes, they made that move to Nevada, but Toby hasn't accepted the job. The man, who was so interested to buy Toby's company, offered to give Toby a one month trial of what it would be like to work for him, then at the end of the month he could make his decision. And Toby took him up on that offer. So, after their honeymoon in Thailand, they packed up and moved to a temporary home in Nevada.
Ever since they've arrived Toby's been swamped with work, or meetings with potential clients, or company dinners. It was a lot of stuff going on and Spencer couldn't always participate because of her own reasons. But he still came home every night, even though he came home late, just to hold her until she fell asleep.
She didn't know why, but for some reason she was really missing him this morning. But thankfully Snow and Tiger came in just in time to keep her company before she got too sad about Toby. She laid in the bed with them for a few more minutes before rolling out of bed.
She walked over to the closet and pulled out one of Toby's shirt. She slipped it onto to her body and immediately brought the collar up to her nose. It smiled just like him and that perked up her mood a little bit more. It was time to feed Tiger and Snow, so she headed for the kitchen.
As she was leaving out of the room, she stopped as she was passing by a mirror. She loved the way she looked in his shirt and she always loved what she saw. She placed her hands over her little baby bump and smiled down at her stomach.
"Well, at least you're here with me this morning."
Toby walked through the door of his home and immediately started to loosen his tie. He took of his jacket and threw it onto the couch in the living room. He glanced down at his watch to see that it was almost 1:30 in the morning. He had got held up at work, again.
He knew where Spencer was because she would be in the same spot every night. He walked up the stairs and to the master bedroom where he slowly opened up the door. And there she was. She was asleep on his side of the bed with a book in her hand. He walked over to her to peel the book from her hands. He looked at the book and chuckled when he saw it was another babies names book.
He sat the book down on the nightstand before kneeling down along side her."Spencer, wake up. Wake up, Spence."
Her eyes opened slowly and he loved the look he always got when he'd come home. It showed him how much she's missed him all day. He leaned over to gently kiss her forehead.
"Hey, you." She said in a raspy voice."I missed you."
"I missed you too," He leaned over again to fully kiss her this time. After a few minutes, he released her lips and his head traveled down to her stomach."and I've missed you too." He lifted her shirt up, which was really his, to kiss his baby hello.
Spencer's hand combed through his hair as he placed kisses on his stomach."How was work?"
He pulled away from her stomach to look at her."Actually, I have some news...I'm not selling Cavanaugh Construction."
"What? Why not? I thought you really wanted this job."
He stood up, so that he could sit next to her on the bed and held her hand."Yeah, I did in the beginning, but now I can't do it. I never see you, I'm always busy, I haven't talked to the guys in weeks, and I don't even have the job, but it's already consuming my life. And I don't want to miss any important moments in our lives." He placed his other free hand on her stomach."Especially this one."
Spencer didn't even know she was crying until he reached over to wipe the tears from her face. This is why she loved him because he always put her first. And now he was putting their baby first as well.
"So does this mean we get to go back to Rosewood?"
"Yep, we're going home."
Toby and Spencer pulled into the driveway of their home a few days later. It was so good to be home in Rosewood after all this time. The house still looked the same, but Spencer knew that in a matter of seven months that this place wouldn't be, so quiet anymore. Spencer unbuckled and got of the car and Toby was already at her side, helping her out of the car.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Cavanaugh." He said to her as he wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her cheek. He held her close as he lead her up the pathway to the porch stairs.
"Wait," she stopped him to look next door. On the front line there was a for sale sign, but a big red sold covering it. Andrew and Kate had left town after Andrews altercation with Toby that day in his office. They were glad that they were gone and now they could move past it."I think we're gonna be having new neighbors soon."
"As long as it's not Andrew and Kate, then I'll be fine." He said before continuing to lead her into the house. Opened up the door and they walked in. He lead her into the living and flipped on the light.
"Surprise!"
Spencer covered her mouth to stop her scream. She wasn't expecting anyone to be here. But all of her friends and family were here just to welcome them home. Her parents and Toby's parents were there. Melissa, Taylor, and Wren. Aria, Mike, Ezra, and Amelia. Emily and Paige. Hanna and Caleb. Jason and CeCe. Jenna and Garret. Alex and his girlfriend. Holden and Mona. Everyone she loved was standing in her living room and that brought tears to her eyes.
"Don't cry, babe." Toby whispered into her ear as he pulled her in for a side hug and kissed the top of her head."It's just a party."
"I'm not crying because I'm sad. I'm crying because I'm happy. Damn these prenatal hormones." She said and then slapped Toby on his chest."I can't believe you didn't tell me about this."
He chuckled before saying."I think this secret was worth keeping. Now, go see you're friends and your family."
She didn't waste any time because as soon as he let her go, she headed straight for her friends. She hugged Emily and then they just all gathered around for a big group hug. She pulled out of the hug and just looked at Emily for a moment.
While they were on vacation, Emily called with good news. The doctors say the treatment was going well and that she was gonna make it. The even better news was that her and Paige were gonna be adding a new addition to their family in a few months. They finally heard back from the adoption agency and were expecting a three year old little boy. Things turned out good for Emily and Spencer couldn't have been more happy for her.
"You guys have no idea how much I've missed you." Spencer said.
"We've missed you too, Spence." Aria said as she reached out to run Spencer's stomach."And we've missed this little gal too."
"Hey, we still don't know the sex yet, so can't say little gal. It's like you're jinxing it." Spencer said and Emily smiled at her and cocked her head to the side.
"You and Toby have a bet on the baby's gender, don't you?" Emily questioned. Spencer momentarily glanced back at Toby to see him talking with the guys, his dad, and her dad. He looked over at her for second as winked before turning back to his conversation.
"It's something like that."
"I just can't believe how great you look for a pregnant women." Hanna said as she looked her friend up and down."I'm not saying it in a bad way, Spence, because you're caring something beautiful inside of you."
"Thanks, but trust me there's nothing beautiful about me when I wake up almost every morning and puke my guys out." Spencer looked over her shoulder at her sister and mother playing with Taylor."Can you guys give me a sec."
She walked over to her mother, sister, and niece and was instantly pulled into the comfort of her mothers arms. After she was released from her mothers death grip, she moved on to hug her sister.
"I've missed you, so much and I've missed our weekly get togethers." Melissa said while she hugged Spencer.
"Oh, I've missed you too." She pulled back from their hug and her eyes darted to Taylor."And I've missed my little angel." She reached to pick up Taylor from the couch, but her mother picked her up before she could grab her.
"Spencer, you're pregnant and shouldn't be lifting anything heavy." Veronica chastised her daughter.
Spencer just rolled her eyes and smiled at her mothers concern."Mom, I'm only pregnant that doesn't mean I'm disabled. As besides Tay isn't all that heavy."
"I can't allow it. You can hold her when I'm not around, but not now." Veronica took Taylor with her as she went over to join Jason's conversation with Alex and CeCe.
"Don't worry I'll let you hold her later." Melissa whispered in Spencer's ear as she passed her to make her way over to Wren.
Spencer turned her attention back to Toby for a second. He noticed her looking at him again, so he smiled and then whispered something to Ezra before standing up and making his way over to her.
"Excuse me miss, but do you think I could borrow you for a sec? There's something I gotta show you upstairs." Toby asked and pouted a little to soften her up.
"Toby, we have guests to entertain." She warned, but was really loving the thought of just slipping away with him for a few minutes.
"Yeah, we have guests, who aren't even thinking about us." He said and gestured to everyone actively in conversation as of their own. Nobody was paying attention to them at that moment."Come on." He grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the stairs.
He placed his hand on her lower back to help her up the stairs. He walked them down to one of the empty bedrooms. He opened up the door and flipped on the lights.
Spencer couldn't believe it. It was like her eyes were playing a trick on her. There was a nursery in what used to be an empty bedroom. She walked further into the room until she was standing in the middle and did a slow 360 spin.
The room had been painted a light yellow color, so it could work for either a boy or girl and had various murals of different animals. Her rocking chair that he had made for her was sitting in the corner of the room next to a little table with a lamp on it. There was a bookshelf in the room and when Spencer looked more closely at the shelves and noticed had different types of books on them. Some books were for learning, some books were bedtime stories, some books were for music and art, and some books were for her.
She looked over by the window to see that a large group of stuffed animals were placed under the window. She smiled when she saw the big stuffed animal Toby had won for her years ago was amongst the other animals. Finally, she walked over the crib because it stood out to her the most and that was saying a lot because there was a lot of stuff in this room.
The crib was crafted out of pure wood, she could tell because she skimmed her hand over it. Her hands stopped on the railing to see that was something engraved there. She looked closed and saw that it said 'Our Greatest Creation'.
Spencer felt Toby's arms wrap around her and she turned around to face him."How did you do this? When did you."
"Well, I had a little help from our guests downstairs. That day I told you I had to go to a conference a little after we moved to Nevada, well I lied and came here." He smiled at we when he saw the look of surprise on her face."I painted the room and put in new wood floors. Aria painted all the murals on the wall. Hanna helped me pick out furniture. Emily and Paige went shopping for the books and toys. The guys helped me with all the heavy lifting. And Jason and Melissa went out to buy all the things we would need for the baby."
"Okay, so if they did all that, then what did you do, Mister Carpenter?" She teased as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I had a special task to do. I built our baby a crib and it took me the whole trip just to make it perfect." He glanced over at the crib before looking back at her."I wanted to make something great for our greatest creation."
"Did you hear that baby? Daddy really loves you." Spencer whispered to her stomach. Toby got down on his knees and placed his head gently against her stomach.
"Hey, in there," He said to Spencer's stomach."I know you're tired of hearing from me because you know I do this ever night when your mommy goes to sleep. But I just wanted to let you know that daddy loves you very much. Hurry up and get here because I can't wait to hold you and I promise I'm gonna be there for you forever. I love you." He kissed her stomach over her shirt before standing back up.
"Come on," She grabbed his hand and laced their fingers together."we still have guests to attend to."
It was getting late and that's when everyone decided to go home. It has been a night full of laughter and love, but Spencer and Toby just wanted some time for themselves. The guys had made plans to help Toby move the stuff that they took with them to Nevada back into the house in the morning. And the girls were dragging her off to some new baby store, so they needed tonight otherwise they wouldn't see each other all day tomorrow.
Spencer was saying goodbye to everyone as they left out of the house. Jason and CeCe were the last to go, but when CeCe left the house he didn't follow. He lingered behind at the door. He pulled an envelope out from inside his coat.
He handed the envelope over to Spencer."Alison wanted me to give this to Toby, but I though I should pass it through you first."
Spencer eyed the envelope questioningly."Do you have any idea what it is?"
He shook his."You know Alison, she's the kind of person that you never know what they're thinking."
"You're right about that. Goodnight Jason and thanks." She pulled him in for a short hug before he slipped out of the door and she locked it behind him.
She turned her attention to the envelope in her hand. She checked to make sure that Toby wasn't around before ripping it out. Surprisingly, it was just a letter. She unfolded it and began to read it.
Dear Spencer,
I knew you would be reading this because I told Jason to give it to Toby, but I knew he'd pass it off to you first. Before you just throw away this letter listen to what I have to say. I know it may not count now, but I'm sorry. I just wanted you to know that. For all the things I put you through and Toby and the girls. I've changed and I've moved on because I've learned from my mistakes. I just wished I would have learned sooner because maybe if I had, then all of us still might have been best friends. This is not just an apology letter, but a congratulations letter. I heard about the baby and I'm happy for you and Toby. You both deserve that kind of happiness. Just do me a favor and take care of each other. And I don't just mean Toby, but the girls too and the rest of your friends. See you soon.

"Spence, I got the bath ready," Toby said as he came walking down the hall from their bedroom. He noticed the letter in her hands and furrowed his eyebrows."What's that?"
She folded the letter up and slipped into her back pocket."Nothing, just something from an old friend."
"Okay," He grabbed her hands and brought them to his lips."I think we deserved that alone time, so are you ready to join me?" She nodded her head and in a quick motion Toby picked her up bridal style and carried her off to the waiting bath.
Toby laid across their big bed and rubbed Snows back as he waited for Spencer to come out of the closet. She had told him, she was getting some clothes to get ready for, but she was taking a long time. He was about to go check on her when she stepped out of the closet wearing one of his shirts.
He sat up and smiled at her as he said."Spence, if you don't stop stealing my shirts, then I won't have any shirts to where."
"Well, that doesn't sound so bad to me." She teased as she crossed the room to sit on her side of the bed. Before Toby could get to her Tiger got to her first and planted himself in her lap.
"Great, first out pets steal you away from me, then it's gonna be the baby hogging you all the time." He joked, but kept a pout on his face to look sad.
She laughed at him, then reached over to kiss him."The baby isn't going to be hogging me all the time. He or she is just gonna take up a huge chunk of my time, but not all of it."
"Speaking of he or she," He reached over to pull something out of nightstand drawer. He placed it on the bed and Spencer noticed it was a babies name book."we still haven't picked out a name yet."
"Toby, we have plenty of time to pick out a name for our daughter."
"Well, I think we should start picking out our sons name now." He said and Spencer almost got away with him agreeing that it was gonna be a girl.
When they first found out that she was pregnant, they wanted to keep the baby's gender a surprise. But Spencer was really adamant that it was gonna be a girl and Toby was really positive that it was gonna be a boy. So, they made a bet and whoever got the baby's sex wrong, then they'd be on diaper duty for a whole month.
"Fine, you want to pick out baby names, then we can." She picked up the lounging dog in her lap and placed him on the bed. She sat facing towards Toby and he sat up, so that he could be faces towards her too.
"Alright, I'll tell you three of the boy names I like. I like Grayson, Aiden, and Matthew."
She nodded her."Those names are not that bad. The girl names I picked were Hadley, Sophia, and Emma." She said."I even picked out a few boys names in that book just in case. Noah, Jacob, and Daniel are my top three for the boys."
He smiled because he knew where she got Daniel from. It was his fathers name and his father was having health problems again. He guessed this was her way of making feel better and he was touched that she would do that.
He cleared his throat before he spoke."I like Ava, Madison, and Olivia. And if we do have a girl I want her middle name to be Marion."
She peered down at her stomach and put a protective hand over it."Well, we've picked out names, so all we have to do his wait for you to get here."
"Spence, do you think I'm gonna be a good dad?"
She looked at him questioningly because she could hear the doubt in his voice. He was doubting himself."Hey, you are gonna be the best dad in the world. And I know it's scary because I get like that sometimes too. I have doubts that I'm not going to be a good mom. But then I start to think about you. I start picturing you holding our baby in the rocking chair. It lets me know I'm not alone and you're not alone either."
"Thanks, babe." He leaned up to place kiss upon her lips and then another and then another."I've got an idea. When the baby is born and whoever loses gets to name the baby, since they're gonna be on diaper duty."
"I like that idea."
"Now, I'm actually hoping I lose." Toby teased and Spencer playfully rolled her eyes at him.
"Oh, please, you're gonna lose anyway."
He raised an eyebrow at her."It's okay if I lose this bet because I know I can still kick your ass at scrabble."
She squinted her eyes at him."Are you challenging me, Cavanaugh?"
"I think I am, Cavanaugh." He responded and he loved the way it sounded."Best two out of three."
"You're on."
He helped her up out of the bed and walked them down to the den where he proceeded to kick her ass at scrabble. They continued to play until the wee of the night until Spencer had enough and said she just wanted to lay with him. So, they laid on the couch and Toby held her close all night. His one arm wrapped around her shoulder and the other softly rubbing her stomach. Yeah, he could get used to this type of life.
