Chapter 11: Zonic's Origins
Zonic widened his eyes and started to shake again, stepping back, away from Zavok as he shook his head in denial. No, this couldn't be true. It couldn't be. He's always been a hedgehog. Why would he be lied to all these years?
"H...how?" He asked.
Zavok sighed. "It was years ago. Your mother died in childbirth and I had to raise you all by myself. That painting you saw was of us, and that blanket was yours as a child. That...cave...you saw was our home, many years ago."
Zonic continued to listen but was still in denial. If he was a Zeti, how had he been a hedgehog and why was he on Earth? All of this...made no sense to him. He was actually...scared. His Father had been his enemy and now his leader. His old home was actually like a new home and his new home is his old home. What happening to his world? His head was spinning with confusion as he could hardly think anymore.
"How...how did I come to be a hedgehog and land on Earth?"
The red Zeti's expression changed to sadness and a tear ran down his cheek. "The Chaos Emeralds had something to do with it. We created them to use as a power source for our planet...but they grew too powerful and almost destroyed our planet's core. It caused a massive earthquake, causing the gravitational pull to go haywire. You fell...and the Chaos Emeralds merged with you, transforming you into a hedgehog. I tried to save you but you were...lost."
Zonic still couldn't comprehend all this. How? The Zeti create the Chaos Emeralds? Impossible! He had always been told by Knuckles that an echidna had created the powerful gems. He looked at Zavok. "Why can't I remember anything about my past, then?"
"It is possible that you got amnesia and forgot everything about being a Zeti."
Zonic frowned at him. That would make it even less for him to believe Zavok. "Why should I believe you?" He asked, still skeptical. Zavok frowned and placed a hand to Zonic's head. In an instant, more flashbacks...memories...appeared in Zonic's mind. He saw Zavok smiling down at him and turning him to face the weakened and during form of Mother. Zonic flinched away and grabbed his head in shock, gasping for breath. His emerald eyes showed shock in them. "Y...you...I can't believe this," he said. "You're my...father, and I...I was a Zeti at birth."
Zavok nodded. Zonic shook his head, still not believing this. Then all of a sudden he was filled with anger and hatred toward Zavok. He killed his friends. Did he even know it was him as a hedgehog and he was fighting him, torturing him to kill and destroy his friends. Why though? If he was his Father he wouldn't have done that...would he?
"If you are my father...then why did you try and destroy me when I was a hedgehog?" Zonic nodded, hurt and upset.
Zavok sighed. "When you fell...I grew so angry that my rage blinded me; I forgot all about you. However, when you showed up...I felt a sense of recognition. Finally, during our final battle, I remembered who you were."
Zonic was still hurt and angry. It had been Zavok's plan to drain Earth of its energy and destroy it, killing all the innocents living on it and all his friends. He glared at Zavok, wondering that if he was such a good father then why would he do that. Without another word, he ran off, creating a sonic boom as he left. Zavok called his name but sighed, hoping Zonic would accept what he told him. Zonic was angry at Zavok. Not only had he kept something like this from him since they met, but also destroyed his home. Well, the place he had called home for the past years and he had also killed all his friends and mechanized his best friend and little brother.
He ran back to the cave and looked around. Zonic groaned in pain as more memories flashed through his mind. He couldn't believe it, he didn't want to. But he had to accept it. Zavok was telling the truth.
