Sorry it's been such a long time since I updated this. I had lost my passion for writing for a while. I'm hoping that that whole thing is over now and I can update more often. I hope people are still interested. This is one of my favorites so far and I'll be updating it more.
She had only been there a week and she was more of a mystery than when she first arrived at Camp.
Cedric saw a cloud of dust appear on the horizon, signaling that is was time for lunch. He climbed out of his hole and dusted off his hands. It wasn't getting any easier to dig. Everyday was a little more brutal than the last and Cedric knew he wouldn't be able to make it much longer. Unfortunately, he had no choice as he was stuck there with a eighteen month sentence and he's only been here for two. He let out a deep breath to calm his nerves.
"Dude, how do we still know nothing about her?" X-Ray helped Armpit out of his hole as they all prepared for the arrival of lunch. "She's been here long enough, right?"
Magnet appeared next to Cedric, "She doesn't say anything, Man. It's not that easy to find things out." He glanced over at Giselle, who didn't break stride as shoveled more dirt out of her hole. "I can't believe this but she's weirder than Zero."
They all agreed as Cedric looked over at her. Magnet was right. Giselle pretty much kept to herself. The only time she said anything was if she needed something. He wasn't even sure if he knew what her voice sounded like. Maybe the reason she kept quiet was so that she didn't draw anymore attention to herself. It wasn't working because her presence alone made her stick out like a sore thumb. She always kept her hair in a side ponytail and even though she was out in the sun all day, she never seemed to get sunburn, let alone tan. Which was strange too since she was so pale to begin with.
That's what kept her on Cedric's suspect list.
"You know what, Torch?" Squid smacked Cedric on the back, breaking his train of thought. "You should talk her. See if you can at least find out why she's here. I'd be happy just knowing that."
The others agreed. "Yeah, man. You are her mentor." X-Ray adjusted his glasses.
"Why me?" Cedric looked at them all in shock.
"Like I said. You're her mentor." X-Ray crossed his arms, taking his status of the King of D-Tent seriously. "Besides, after her, you're the newest person her. That means you got to do all the things we don't want to. And none of us want to make a fool of ourselves."
Cedric rolled his eyes, "So it's okay for me to look like an idiot?" He looked around as the others avoided making eye contact with him. As they got in line to get their lunch, he let out a small growl. "Fine."
oooOOOooo
Giselle tried to pace herself as she kept shoveling. It wasn't hard at all. Sure, she had the help of being extra strong and the blisters never lasted long as her accelerated healing always kicked in. She still had to try and blend in, which meant keeping her shoveling to a somewhat human pace.
She got bored easily since digging wasn't as difficult as she thought it would be. So, she kept herself entertained by listening in on the boys' conversations. For the first few days she was there, almost every word centered around her. They stilled talked about her now, but it wasn't as much. Which she couldn't be happier about. All she had to do for the next 18 months was kept a low profile.
"Hey."
Giselle looked up to find a boy named 'Torch' standing over her. It surprised her a little. Obviously she had been too wrapped up in her own thoughts to hear him coming. She looked up at him, not sure what to say.
He squatted down, handing a brown lunch bag in her direction. "I grabbed your lunch since you seemed really into digging. Thought you might be hungry."
She looked at the bag a few moments, processing the situation. She really wasn't hungry for mortal food but it would look odd if she never ate. She took the bag slowly. "Thank you."
"No problem." He smiled at her as he went to walk away. Suddenly, he turned back to her. "Would you mind if I ate with you? I know it's weird to ask but I thought maybe we could talk a little."
It was going to happen eventually and she knew it. "Sure."
They both took a seat on the edge of her hole and opened their lunch. It wasn't the greatest food but it was something. She took a bit a stared into her hole, not sure what to say to him. "What did you want to talk about?"
Torch swallowed loudly as he wiped of his mouth. "Oh yeah. Uh, well, I was gonna ask you a few questions. You know, if you don't mind."
Giselle could hear his heart as it started to beat faster. He was nervous to talk to her. That or he was scared. Either way, she never would have guessed it. On the outside, he seemed absolutely calm. "I won't mind at all. What do you want to ask?"
"Well, we're all sort of curious why you're here. What did you do?"
"Do you want to know what I did to be sent here? Or what I did to get punished at all?" She shifted he glance to the other boys, who tried to pretend like they weren't staring at her.
He looked at her a moment, "Both, I guess."
She placed her sandwich on the bag beside her. "Well, I'm at Camp Green Lake because I did some...things at the last two facilities I was at and they didn't want me there anymore. No one else would take me after they saw my records. It got to the point that I was almost placed in prison. Thankfully, my lawyer fought for me and made a lot of phone calls. Green Lake is the only place that said they would take me." She picked her sandwich back up before continuing, "As for why I'm here at all, I don't think I'm ready to talk about it just yet."
Torch nodded, "Fair enough. I won't force you to talk about it if you don't want to."
They sat in silence for a few moments before Giselle spoke up, "May I ask you a question?"
"Uh, sure, I guess" He cleared his thought. "I mean, you let me ask you something. Why not?"
She swallowed the last bite of her sandwich and dusted off the crumbs. "Why do the others call you Torch? Seems like a strange choice for a nickname." She leaned back on her hands. It was something that bothered her. They all had weird nicknames and she had spent a lot of time thinking about it. In the end, she decided they did it for a reason. Now, she wanted to know.
He took a deep breath and cleared his throat, "It has to do with why I'm here."
"And what's that?" She leaned her head to the side.
"Well, I set fire to the principal car one night. Outside of his house." He nodded his head, "Seems stupid now but then it made a lot of sense. I didn't like the guy. It always felt like he was out to get me and I wanted to send him a message. Obviously, it didn't work the way I planned and I got caught."
She studied his face a moment. He seemed out of place amongst the others. They were all rough and loud. When she watched them together, she noticed that he was a little different. At times, he even seemed like a gentleman. He didn't belong and part of her craved the truth. "Wow, I didn't expect that."
He let out a short laugh, "Yeah, well, it's all true." He glanced behind him and got to his feet, "Well, if I wanna finish my hole today, I should go finish. Thanks for talking to me."
She smiled at him before he walked away. Before, she got back to shoveling she watched him a moment as the others gathered around him. If it took everything she had, she would find out what made him so different.
oooOOOooo
"Well, what did she say?"
"What did you guys talk about?"
"Did you think she knows we sent you over there?"
All the guys crowded around Cedric as he made his way back to his hole. He pushed them back a step, "Calm down, would ya? Geez, if she didn't know you guys wanted me to go over there before she does now."
"Tell what she said, man." ZigZag pushed past Magnet. "She talked to you for a while. Did shes say anything interesting?"
He gave them the short version of the conversation, leaving the important parts in. Once he finished, she shrugged, "She seemed normal, I guess. Although, I've never seen anyone eat a sandwich so daintily." Looking back at her, he shook his head. "At least we know something about her, now. It's better than nothing."
He jumped back in his hole as the others talked amongst themselves. The whole time he was with her, he couldn't help but study her every move. Everything she did made her seem like she was from a different time. It was almost like she was royalty as some point in her life and she carried herself with grace. It captivated him. And now, he was more sure than ever that she belonged at the top of his watch list.
