Chapter 19:

(Eddie P.O.V)

After talking to James and his father, I headed in the direction of the guardian apartments. Needing to talk to Rose about the man who I'm pretty sure is one of Robert's minions. Looking around as I crossed the court yard, I saw Rose a few feet ahead of me.

"Hey, Rose!" I called, picking up my pace.

Stopping in her tracks, Rose turned around to face me. "Hey yourself."

"I've been needing to talk to you," I blurted out once I was standing in front of her.

"Really? Me too."

"What do you want to talk to me about?"

"You first," she answered after a few minutes.

We continued to walk as I told her about the bathroom incident. Her face went from sleepy to furious in a matter of seconds.

"Did you tell Hans?" Rose asked, her voice tight.

"I ran into him in the hallway," I replied, making sure no one was listening to our conversation. "I told him what happened and he said he'll take care of it."

Rose took a deep breathe to calm herself down. "Let's just hope Hans locks that sucker up like the rest of his friends."

Sighing, I nodded my head in agreement. When is the trial going to place? The sooner it's over, the better. I really hope those horrible people are out of here and in the maximum prison in Alaska.

"Anyways, what did you want-"

I was cut off by someone shouting my name. I turned my attention to the person running toward Rose and me. I know Rose can take care of herself, but it didn't stop me from jumping in front her.

"Eddie! Eddie!" a voice shouted, coming closer to us.

Feeling my stake in hand, I sized up the person as much as I can. When he almost ran into my chest, I realize the shouting was coming from the one person I haven't seen in a while.

Ambrose.

He was panting like he just ran a mile or something. I wonder what's got him so worked up? His black hair sitting in a mess on the top of his head like he just woke up.

"Rhonda needs to talk to you, Eddie," Ambrose said between breathes.

He might be a dhampir, but he lacks in physical conduct. Has he even tried be a guardian or was it too much work for a pretty boy like him? After he flirted with Jill at some royal party a while ago, I never liked him.

Even though Jill told me it was nothing and I shouldn't be worried, I couldn't help, but very protective around him. I clasped Rose's wrist in my free hand while I waited for Ambrose to elaborate.

"What does she want to talk about?" I asked when I noticed he wasn't going to say anymore.

"It doesn't matter because you're not going," Rose chimed in, moving to stand next to me. "Tell her we have-"

"It's important!" Ambrose protested, eyes wide. "You have to see her now!"

What's got into him lately? Ever since Rose and Dimitri got back from Russia after having Rosalie, Ambrose hasn't been the same. I looked over him, trying to find any clues to what in world is wrong with him.

"Ambrose, where your aunt?" I asked slowly, watching him carefully.

"Where she usually is," he answered like we should already know that. "In her office."

A beeper went off and Ambrose dug into his pants pocket for it. He read whatever was on the screen and then looked back at us.

"Gotta go, bye!" He ran in the opposite direction of where came from and turned the corner.

"That was weird," Rose remarked, shaking her head. "I mean seriously what's with him? I miss the old Ambrose."

The old Ambrose wasn't in a hurry all time or was flirting with every girl at court. Shrugging my shoulders, I continued to walk. Instead of going to the guardian apartments, I headed Rhonda's office.

"Where are you going?" Rose asked, still standing in the same spot.

"Turning, I answered, "going to see what Rhonda wants."

She just starred at me like I was crazy which I probably am since I'm going to see what a fortune teller wants. Or as Rose use to call her a scam artist until Dimitri told Rose that Rhonda is a Romanian witch.

Now Rose calls her the wicked witch of the west even though we live in the east. I didn't believe Rose when she told me Rhonda's reading for Dimitri came true until I saw it myself.

Rhonda told Dimitri he will lose what he values the most and it was his soul that he valued. Rose still believes Dimitri got turned in a Strigoi because of Rhonda. I on the other hand don't believe that Rhonda is as bad as Rose points her out to be.

"Don't you remember what I told you?" she asked, coming right up to me. "Don't you think it's a little weird that Ambrose is acting totally different and we haven't even seen Rhonda in a while because she never comes out of her office?"

"Yes, I do think it's a little weird, but-" I began.

"But, I'm going with you," she finished, eyes dark and face serious.

I knew fighting with my little sister was hopeless because she always ends up winning no matter what the situation is. Sighing, I turned around and continued walking with a very grumpy Rose following closely to me.

"What did you want to talk to me about?" I asked, looking down at her.

Taking a deep breathe, she answered, "well, you know how the guardians went to Las Vegas to get the kids?" She didn't wait for me to answer. "It turned out that when they were loading in the cars Rosalie saw-" she cut herself off.

"Rose, what did she see?" I asked in a low voice.

"Mason. She saw Mason. It turns out that he hadn't moved on that there's something or someone keeping him from finding peace."

Mason? Rosalie saw Mason? I would do anything to get a chance to see my brother again. I still remember the promise we made back when we were in kindergarten.

Flashback:

It was the first day of kindergarten and I was scared to death. I didn't know anyone here or wanted to get to know any of them. All I wanted to do was hide in a corner and wish my mommy was here to take me home.

I did just that. Finding a quite corner away from all the other kids, I buried my face in knees. I softly cried to myself as I heard the other kids laugh and play with each other. Footsteps came closer and closer to the spot I was at.

Looking up, I saw a freckled face, red-headed boy smiling at me. His head was tilted slightly to the side as he stood there in front of me. Not knowing what he wants or what to say to him, I just sat there starring at the kid.

"I'm Mason," the boy said at last. "Want to be my friend?"

Mason doesn't even know me, but he still wants to be my friend? I nodded my head up and down, feeling kind of happy that I made a new friend. Sitting down next to me, Mason reached out and held my hands tightly in his.

"Don't worry. Everything is going to be alright," he assured me. "We're going to be friends forever."

"Really?" I asked in a small voice. "You want to be my friend forever?"

"Of course! Hey, you never did tell me your name."

I don't really like my name, but since Mason wants to be my friend, I guess I can tell him. "My is Edison, but I don't like it."

"How about this," Mason said cheerfully. "To me your Eddie."

Eddie. I can live with that name.

"I like it!"

"Let's make a promise!"

I looked at him in confusion.

"What promise?" I asked, not understanding what he's talking about.

"A promise that no matter what happens we will always be best friends," Mason answered, smiling at me. "Well...more like brothers I hope since I really want a brother."

"I can be your brother!"

It's barely the first day of kindergarten and I already a have best friend/brother name Mason whom makes me feel happy and safe.

"I love would to have you as a brother!"

Just then, Mason wrapped his arms my body and hugged me. Smiling, I hugged him back. I can really see Mason and me being friends forever.

"So, it's a promise?" Mason asked, pulling away to look at me.

"It's a promise," I answered happily.

End of Flashback:

The memories were replaced by a bright light being flashed in my eyes. I tried to move my head away, but it was too heavy. I can hear voices all around me, but I couldn't place who they belonged to.

I noticed that I was laying down in a soft bed instead of walking. There were lots of blurry faces who were talking way too fast that I couldn't make out a single word they were saying.

Feeling my head throb from all the noise, I tried cover my ears, but my arms wouldn't move an inch. For some reason I felt really exhausted and I closed my eyes to rest and fell into a deep sleep.
