So I'm back again for those who enjoyed chapter one. Sorry for the long gap in my updates but I am still kind of locked down with another fan fiction I am working on. This chapter I really wanted to explore the kind of problems that would come about because of Raven and Robin's bond, my inspiration coming from the episode Fear Itself. Hope all of you enjoy this as much as I did writing.
Nightmares
Robin's eyes quickly parted as he quickly snapped out of his daze. The flashing blue lights pulling away from his desire to sleep.
This alarm was special. Unlike the normal alarm that sounded this one flashed blue and did not emit any sound. Only two people in the tower ever responded to this particular alarm. Robin had already reached for his communicator when it had already started beeping. He flicked the display open and was met with the face one of his closest friends someone he considered an older brother at times, Cyborg.
"Hey man you think you can get this one. The last time I had nightmares for weeks."
Robin smiled slightly
"Don't worry I can handle this. Compared to a night in Gotham this is a walk in the park."
"Just be careful man."
"I always am."
"Right…"
The display turned off leaving Robin to sit in the dark. He moved effortlessly across the room not needing his sight to navigate the vast expanse before him having memorized almost every detail of this room. He reached his closet and began grabbing his equipment.
He contemplated for a moment on whether or not to put on his uniform but figured the sooner he got this over with the sooner it would be done.
…
He moved through the halls of Titans Tower making his way closer to his goal when he heard a laugh echo around him. He froze drawing out his bow staff as he settled into a deep stance his muscles tensing reading for movement.
The hall way was barren except for the shadows that played against the wall. They began to flare, slowly taking shape as they pealed from the walls and stood before the costumed hero. The shadows folded and thickened till three figures stood before Robin.
Robin pulled a sharp intake of breath as he stared at the three figures before him and new something wasn't right.
"What's wrong wonder boy," The man said his smile growing impossibly wide. "Expecting someone or something else?" The pasty skin and those hideously green neon eyes that seemed to almost glow in the darkness were all things Robin wanted to forget. Robin knows this man better than he would have liked to. Scars all over Robin's body begin to burn the pain relived just like it was yesterday. "How long has it been, years?" He makes his way forward leaning against puts both arms out against the walls, his coat flaring around him. "Too long, too long," He says shaking his head. "If I had known that our little accident would have ended our fun…" He leaned his back against the wall placing a purple gloved finger to his lips as he begins to think. "I would have done it sooner! You know you're the reason he is weaker. He was so much stronger before you came, so much more driven, so much more fun."
Robin Lunged at him his attacks powerful hitting nothing but air as the Joker moved with an almost unnatural speed.
"You are his weakness. You hold him back from his true potential. You are useless, unnecessary, and pathetic. No wonder he pushed you away."
Robin lunged his anger flaring as he tackled the joker to the ground. He pounded away at the Joker's face, scattered jig and yelps echoing out between each punch.
"Good job Robin. Keep giving into your anger. It's worked out so well for you before."
Robin looked up as a figure clad in orange and black armor emerged from the darkness. "You shouldn't have come back Slade," Robin said venom dripping from his lips. He looked back down at the Joker but he was gone.
"Come now Robin you are smarter than this. You know what's going on. Don't fall for this."
"And why should I trust you," Robin said reading himself into a fighting stance.
"Because Raven here is having a nightmare .Specifically your nightmare and has manifested itself here and now." He made his way closer to Robin, picking up his bow staff from the ground and holding it out before him.
"And I can assume you are part of this manifestation," Robin asked taking the staff out of Slade's hand. "If you are I find it surprising we aren't fighting then."
"Probably because you fears are not of fighting me but of us being similar enough to be on the same side. You are afraid of being me. You and Raven are linked together I highly suggest you reel in those emotions till you get to her otherwise this will all be worse."
Slade leaned against the wall his body folding into the shadows till no one was there.
"Make sure you tell Raven I said hi."
Robin shook his head. 'Always has to have the last say,' Robin thought.
"So you fraternize with criminals, beyond disappointing Richard."
Robin didn't have to see to know who this was, the deep voice having been part of his life for seven years now. The deep gruff voice that commanded so much respect over the years now only filled him with anger.
"I am beyond caring what you think and its Robin," He said reading his staff. "You can't change that."
"You think you deserve the title of Robin," the voice said echoing around him. Robin readied himself as three batarangs flew out from the shadows. He held his ground whipping his bow staff against the incoming objects but was left open for the swift kick that came from behind him and sent him spiraling towards the wall.
"You are unrefined, weak. You were never meant for this life because you are not strong enough," the shadows bellowed as Robin was hit knocking him out of balance. He tried to get his Barings but each hit continued to knock him around never giving him a second to set himself.
"You nothing, just a joke. You can't save anyone you can't even save yourself."
Robin let his anger explode delivering a haymaker into the dark that sent the shadows spiraling away from him. "You think I'm not good enough," He shouted rushing forward following up with a quick knee as he shifted his weight grabbing the bulk of the shadow and sending it slamming into the wall. "You're just an illusion, a fake!"
He followed up with multiple powerful strikes, hitting the ribs, head, legs and spine. "Otherwise I couldn't do this," He yelled throwing the shadow to the ground. He lunged forward as he slammed his foot against its jaw holding it in place as he raised his bow staff up high. "YOU'RE NOTHING!"
He brought the staff down bursting the shadows open and spewing their contents across the floor. They soon dissolved disappearing as he made his way down the hallway.
He stumbled slightly in the grasp of this illusion as it folded around him. "This can't be happening she can't know this much," he told himself repeatedly as he walked. "If she does she'll turn away, hate me. Be disgusted by the true darkness I really am."
"Robin where's my little Robin." The shadow said as it steadily came into focus.
"No not you. It can't be you."
"Oh Dick how can you forget your own mother," the shadows said.
Robin focused his mind. He reminded himself that none of this was real as he continued his way towards Raven's room.
Robin walked slowly into the room making his way to the sleeping girl's bed, sitting down and giving the sleeping woman a small nudge. "Raven its Robin. Wake up," he said pulling the sleeping form close to him. She stirred slightly in his arms till she her eye's pried open.
She felt warm and safe. 'Where am I,' Raven thought as she rapidly drew from the recess of her mind and awoke in a warm embrace. She let out a gasp as she realized exactly where the warmth she was feeling was coming from and could do nothing but watch as dark energy left her body and shattered the vanity in her room. She would probably have mourned it if she had really cared about her appearances but what she cared more about was the person who was currently holding her against his chest.
"Robin," she said, drawing slowly from her slumber. "What's going on?"
"It's ok you were having a bad dream."
She stared up at him flashes of her nightmare came back to her and she shuddered in his arms.
He looked down at her and said, "How about we get some tea." He picked her up effortlessly carrying her out into the hall way. They reached the living room, Robin moving to the couch and placing her on the soft cuttions.
She fought not to show it but she missed the warmth the closeness, odd as it was. She generally didn't like anyone getting close but with Robin it was different. Since the creation of their bond it she took comfort being near him. When he was close to her like this she felt like she could allow herself to feel.
Robin came back to her with two steaming cups of tea in both his hands. She took the cup from him staring down at its contents, the steam rising and warming her face. He sat next to her maintaining a slight space between them. Raven took a sip from the liquid.
"Chamomile?"
Robin nodded. "It is still two in the morning," he said not meeting her gaze.
She could feel it the void of things unsaid so she spoke. "We need to talk about what I've been dreaming about."
"I know," he said taking another sip from his cup. "I assume you realized that that those aren't your nightmares."
"They're yours," she said remembering the dark figures that had plagued these recent dreams, people she had never met before. "I think when we're asleep that there is a bleeding affect through our bond. Both our guards are down and some of our memories are transferred to each other." She looked down smiling to herself as she shook her head. "We're lucky this hasn't happened before."
Robin shifted his wait and Raven found herself leaning against his shoulder. "I'm going to be waking you up from now on," he said finishing his cup. "I don't want Cyborg to see any of that."
"I'm sorry," she said nestling closer to him.
"It's fine. If there is anyone I'm comfortable with knowing it would be you."
She took reassurance from that and began to relax. "Who where they," she asked. She could feel the tension coming from him and the walls start to go off but then something unexpected happened. They all dropped and for once she could finally feel everything from him. She swore she heard, "Screw it," echo throughout her mind.
"The Clown with the creepy make up is the Joker. He's part of the reason i left Gotham," Robin said letting out a small groan. "He almost killed me once. I caught a stray bullet while chasing him a few years back. The bullet was a few centimeters from my heart."
"What's the other reason," Raven asked looking at him. She didn't want to push but she needed to know what was going on with these people and why they were in her head.
"My mentor he blamed himself said he never should have taken me in done this to me."
He looked at her for the first time. Really looked at her and she felt it all the emotions he kept locked up hidden form everyone. "I need this," He told her. "I can't give this up even if… even when it kills me. I have to be this."
"I understand," she said to him.
She sat there silently enjoying this moment for as long as it would last.
…
Cyborg woke up making his way through the hallways of Titans Tower. It was seven and he knew he had to start making breakfast. Lord knew nobody here could cook, especially Raven. He remembered briefly the time she had tried to make pancakes for everyone before she decided to offer herself to Trigon to protect them all.
He shuddered slightly at the memory but then remembered exactly what happened last night. Raven had another one of her nightmares. He stopped by her door debating for a second on whether to knock but decided she deserved to sleep in.
When he made it to the kitchen he saw a sight he had never seen before. Raven and Robin were both asleep on the couch. Not just that but she was resting against him.
His first instinct was to yank the boy wonder arms off and throw him off of Titans Tower and see if a robin could actually fly but stopped when he got around the couch and saw Raven's face. For the first time since their trip to Tokyo since they formed this team, she was relaxed. The small scowl that was perminantly attached to her face was nowhere to be seen. Even with her eyes closed she looked happy.
That's when he finally knew, the reason why and he wanted to hit himself for not noticing earlier. Raven loved Robin.
…
Raven slowly roused from her slumber her eyes slowly prying open. Her first thought was that this was not her room and the warm fabric she had her face against was not her pillow. As she sat up she surveyed the room and came to the realization that she was in the living room and interesting enough she had been using Robin for a human pillow.
She stared at his face slowly taking in all its features. His normally stern and rigid face was now relaxed showing more of his youthfulness than she had ever seen. His hair was down hanging in front of his face, no longer defying gravity with its long spikes. She wanted to run her hand through it and see if it was as soft as it looked.
She gazed down at his thin lips and felt herself being slowly pulled towards them.
"Do it," courage shouted. "You can't have fear. You have to be brave and take him."
She moved even closer.
"Take him it's what you want," Lust moaned. "It's what you need."
She moved closer still even as the dark energy slowly spilled from her body and fought desperately to reel it all back in. It worked the shadows receading as she continued towards him.
"Ah hem."
The soft cough snapped her out of her daze instantly as she scanned the dark room. She saw the soft glowing red eye watching her. She slowly stepped away and made her way towards the table.
"Got some food and tea for you," Cyborg said taking a large bite from a steaming hot sausage. "Should I even ask what that was?"
Raven had to fight down the small blush that was burning its way across her face. "It was nothing."
"You don't want to tell me that's fine just say so but don't lie to my face," Cyborg said leaning on closer. "Look if you're in love with Robin then that's great I'm happy but he's with Starfire."
"You think I don't know that? You think I'm going to do anything to hurt Starfire? I'm in control of my emotions. I'm not allowed to feel."
Cyborg rolled his eyes. "And what exactly was that just now?"
"A lapse of judgment," Raven said. She could feel anger taking over slightly. "It won't be happening again." She shot him with her signature glare.
"Calm down Rae. Look I'm just worried about you. Worried about everyone. Honestly if Robin was single I'd be one of the happiest guys on this team. I think this is something you really need but the problem is he's not."
"I know it sucks," Raven said throwing her arms up. "Whoopee." She looked up at Cyborg. "It doesn't matter I don't need anything. I just need to focus and control this. It's not like I need to waste my time on something as ridiculous as love."
"Oh thanks Raven," she heard deep down inside her.
"You trying to convince me or yourself," Cyborg said taking another bite. "Look I just have one question. Does Robin know and am I going to have to have a talk about this later?"
"Of course not," she said shaking her head. "You know he wouldn't take advantage of that."
"I don't know anything. All I do know is that he's a teenage boy with two beautiful girls after his affections. Now eat up you had a long night last night and need the energy."
She stared down at the plate in front of her and decided to eat mostly because she didn't feel like arguing with Cyborg over the fact that she wasn't hungry, especially since Cyborg took the benefits of a healthy breakfast very seriously.
The two of them sat there silently eating breakfast until Robin slid into the seat next to Raven with a small cup of coffee. "You feeling better," he asked her. She responded with a small nod.
Robin brought his gaze to Cyborg. "Look from now on I'll handle the manifestation of nightmares in the tower."
Cyborg shot him a questioning look. "Why's that?"
Robin debated silently for a moment on whether or not to tell Cyborg the truth. "Because she manifested some of my nightmares last night."
Cyborg sat there for a moment. He looked over at Raven and when she returned a small nod confirming his statement. Cyborgs eye grew wide. "Man you know what that's fine. The idea of something being out there that scares you scares the crap out of me." "But how," he asked.
"Our bound," they responded at the same time.
Cyborg tried to process everything. "You know what. Take it. Lord knows I don't want to know what you have nightmares about," Cyborg said scarfing down the rest of his food and placing the plate in the sink. He left quickly digesting everything as he went to the garage, the only place he could find peace anymore. The truth was since there where almost no villains for the Titans to fight anymore they had too much free time. He began working on the T car his Pride and joy and really could only come up with one conclusion. If things stayed the way they where it was going to end badly.
