"You're insane," Clara blurted out before realising what she was saying, her eyes shutting for a brief second before she glanced across at the alien who was standing perfect still in shock. "Doctor, you need to get some sleep. You need to calm down and relax and start getting over this whole incident with River and your little girl," she explained as he shook his head, knowing that she didn't believe him. Why would she believe him anyway? "Doctor you need to get out of the TARDIS and start living life, you're starting to go mad in here."
"I'm not going mad," he immediately responded as he walked towards her, not surprised when she stepped back. "River and I had a daughter and that daughter is you," he stated as Clara continued to shake her head, terrified about what had happened to the man she thought to be her friend. "Clara you have to believe me."
"Believe you Doctor," Clara exclaimed. He really did believe that she was his daughter! "My parents were Ellie and Dave Oswald, they met when he was almost hit by car and they got married and had me. I was their only daughter, Clara Amelia Oswald. I was blown into this world on a leaf; you told me that, you showed me that. That leaf Doctor, the leaf you had. The leaf that practically saved me," she stated nervously, shaking her head in determination as she stepped away from him while he shut his eyes for a second. "I'm not your daughter Doctor, your daughter is a little girl called Amelia who you gave up for adoption because you were unable to keep her safe."
"Her name wasn't Amelia, her name was Clara Amelia Song," the Doctor insisted as he remained beside the cot, not knowing how to prove to her that he was telling the truth. "Your parents, Ellie and Dave, they lost their baby and River and I needed a family who we could trust with our little girl Clara," he blurted out before realising what he'd just said. "I'd seen them with you Clara and I saw how much they loved you," the Doctor explained as she remained completely silent, her head still shaking.
"You make me sick," she blurted out quickly, clearly angry at him. "They're my parents Doctor," she shouted. "Ellie and Dave Oswald were my parents, they are my parents."
"No," the Doctor insisted as she moved towards the door, turning away from him as he started to think. "There was an engagement ring we gave to our daughter," he stated as she stopped. "It was silver, with a diamond, nothing overly fancy and it belonged to Amy, River's mother," he explained as she remained perfectly still. "And a blanket, it was old but it was still completely perfect. It was white but it had gone off slightly over the years," he commented as Clara slowly turned to face him. "It belonged to River's dad Rory."
"Doctor," Clara said quietly as she reached up and removed a necklace that was underneath her dress collar, revealing the diamond ring he'd been discussing. "Mum and dad said it belonged to a relative and when I was old enough they'd tell me more but then mum died and it didn't seem to matter anymore," she said quietly as he slowly moved towards her. "My whole life has been a lie," she whispered, clearly upset as he wrapped his arms around her, keeping her close to his body as she buried her face into his chest.
"Clara," he said quietly, not surprised again when she stepped away from him and shook his head. "Clara…"
"How long have you known? How long have you known that I was your…?" she began before shaking her head again, confused about everything. Her whole life had been a lie, the people she'd called her parents weren't her real parents and the man she'd trusted and called her friend was now apparently her father.
"Since River gave birth, she named you and then I realised. I promise I didn't know any sooner, none of our friendship has been a lie Clara," he explained as Clara shook her head and crossed her arms around her body. "Clara please we need to talk about this," he begged, desperate to explain everything to her as she remained perfectly silent while slightly shaking her head. She couldn't do this!
"Doctor," a voice called out almost angrily as he turned to look towards the doorway in amazement. This seriously couldn't be happening right now.
"This can't be happening, not now," he whispered to himself as Clara glared across at him while the sound of approaching footsteps got louder.
"Is that?" Clara asked as the Doctor nodded slowly. "Does she know?" she questioned as the Doctor shook his head, forcing a smile onto his face when River entered the room and stared at him, not noticing the woman who was standing slightly behind her.
"Hello sweetie," River smirked as she walked towards him and wrapped her arms around his neck, his eyes shutting when he realised that she'd been drinking.
"River, you need to get some sleep," he suggested, not wanting her to say anything in front of Clara as she stood nervously, thinking about everything she'd just learnt. "You need to get some sleep and then we'll talk later," he began before leaning forward so that Clara didn't hear his later comment. "You need to sober up."
"I don't need to do anything," River responded, stepping away from him before she turned to see the stranger in the doorway. "Who the hell are you?" River immediately blurted out as the Doctor groaned and stepped forward, resting his hand on River's shoulder as she felt her tense underneath his touch. "Doctor why is there a random woman in my daughter's room?" she shouted quickly as Clara continued to stare at her in amazement while the Doctor kept hold of her shoulder.
"River this is a friend of mine," he stated as Clara opened her mouth to speak, stopping when the Doctor shook his head slowly. "River, you're upset so why don't you go and get a drink and we'll talk about everything later," the Doctor suggested as he pressed a kiss into her hair while Clara watched as River shut her eyes for a moment. "River please, you need to sober up," he whispered into her curls as she slowly nodded and turned to face him, a small smile covering her face as she leant up and gently pressed a kiss to his lips.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," River whispered as she slowly wrapped her arms around her husband while the Doctor sighed and buried his face into her hair while Clara watched. "I was a useless mother, she was so beautiful and tiny and I should have protected her," his wife said into his chest as the Doctor glanced across at Clara who was staring at them in amazement.
"River you need to go to bed now," he said quietly as Clara shook her head, still trying to take in everything she'd just learnt.
"Doctor, we'll talk another day about everything," the dark haired woman commented as she slowly moved towards the door.
"Clara wait," he called out as he felt River tense in his arms at the name he'd said.
"What did you just say?" River asked as she stared up at him before turning to face the other woman who was now standing in shock. "Doctor tell me what you just said now," River warned, desperate to know whether she was hearing things or whether she was right and he'd just called the stranger Clara.
"River you need to go and sober up," the Doctor stated as Clara remained perfectly still, not knowing what to say. "You're tired, a bit drunk and you're upset. You need to go to bed and we'll talk about it in the morning, I promise," he begged, brushing his fingers across her cheek while Clara watched the couple. They were clearly well suited, in a strange way and they clearly loved each other, she could tell that by how much they cared for each other as he kept his arms around her body.
"Okay," River finally sighed, giving in to her husband's demands as she slowly stepped away and walked through the room towards the doorway where Clara was standing. Smiling weakly at the younger woman, River slowly turned and disappeared towards her bedroom while Clara remained silent and faced the Doctor.
"She isn't normally like that Clara," he stated as Clara nodded slowly. "She's strong and wonderful, she doesn't usually drink that much but it's been hard on her. She was determined to be a brilliant mother after everything that had happened to her as a baby," he blurted out as Clara stepped forward, still trying to adjust to the idea that her best friend was actually her father.
"So you're my father," Clara said quietly as he nodded quickly, knowing that she was still in shock. "And she's my…" she began, falling silent again as he nodded once more, trying desperately to work out how to deal with the situation he was in. "I think I might go home Doctor," she admitted as he nodded, knowing that she needed to think about everything she'd learnt. "We'll talk later."
"Clara," he said quietly as she moved towards the door. "I'm sorry," he whispered as she remained silent for a moment before nodding briefly and disappearing from sight. Sighing, the Doctor turned before collapsing into the rocking chair and shaking his head. Now he had two confused and angry women to deal with!
