They were both wet the moment they returned home. Maya went to take a shower, and Phoenix went to his room to put on something dry. He was thinking in what happened. Thinking about Maya. Was it true what Larry said? She really had feelings for him? Or did she just felt in debt with him for saving her life? After all, his feelings were clearer, he really liked her.
He didn't know since when he did, maybe since the first time she visited him in the hospital, maybe since that afternoon in the lake Gourd, or maybe since before all this, before losing his memory. Maybe Pearls was right 'love is something you can't forget'… although, that sounded like a fantasy from a fangirl form princess stories.
"Nick…" He heard.
Phoenix instantly stood upright and he turned towards Maya, she was in the doorway. For how long? She was already out of the shower and was clinging to a new robe that showed her shape, she still had some beads of hair in her shoulders.
"Ah, Maya, did you wanted something?" He asked, recovering from being startled.
"Well, I found this and I thought that you might want to see it." She answered, pointing to the item in her hands: an album. "Maybe it can bring some of your memories."
"Photographs?"
"No, this are from the newspapers, from your trials."
Phoenix raised an eyebrow and took a better look at the album, he made a gesture to Maya, indicating that she should come closer and so, she sat in the bed by his side. With a smile she started going from page to page, showing many cut outs from newspaper. Some of them were tiny, secondary headlines, but there were some big ones, from some really big cases: 'progress in the investigation from the murder in the prosecutor's office.' 'The defense saves Lana Skye from suspicion…'; 'President from Bluecorp, Red white, under arrest for the murder of local lawyer…', 'prodigy prosecutor, comes from Germany, and promises a superb victory…', and some others.
"It seems like I went through a lot of things…"
"We went through a lot of things." Maya corrected him. "I was with you on almost all of those moments. You needed someone taking care of you."
"You took care of me? Wasn't the other way around?"
"Don't think of me as a child, Nick. I'm already an adult." Maya pouted, like if she was angry.
"Alright, sorry." Phoenix apologized. "Maya, I don't think of you as a child, at all." He decided to change the topic. "From when is this one?" He asked, pointing to the cut out of a very attractive guy, his hair was covering one of his eyes.
"That… that's from Matt Engarde's case, your last case…" She mumbled. "I talked about it, remember? It was one of the worst."
"From the Steel samurai? Was it worse from Edgeworth's case?"
"Actually its from the Nickel samurai." She corrected. "And I do think it was worse."
Phoenix looked at her, animating her to continue.
"You see, you were working under a lot of pressure… because my life was on the line."
"What?"
"Well, it's a long story." Maya shock her hands to reduce the importance of her statement. "I was kidnapped and they wanted Engarde to be declared innocent at any cost, so that's why they make sure that you cooperated."
Phoenix stuttered for a moment, shocked. Finally able to talk.
"I'm sorry."
"What are you saying?" She was surprised. "You don't have to be sorry, you saved me!"
"But you were kidnapped because of me, because you are important to me."
"Don't be silly." Maya shocked her head. "You saved me, that is the only thing that matters. Why would you blame our relationship for what happened?"
"Our relationship?"
"Yeah, you know…" Maya looked away, blushing. "I mean our friendship."
Phoenix breathed deeply, he decided that it was time to let things clear.
"Look Maya, there's something I need to know… What's exactly between you and me?"
The medium's eyes widened, surprised by the question. She stammered before answering.
"W-well… I believe you know, Nick, I'm your best friend…"
"I can't believe it." Phoenix answered, resolved to go all the way. "I don't know what I was thinking before losing my memories, but knowing everything that happened to us, all those trials, all those movements… Did I really let you be nothing more than a friend?"
"Nick…" Maya mumbled, but she didn't say anything else. Her eyes were following his lip's movement.
"What I'm trying to say is that I believe that you're the best thing that happened to me. I feel stupid for saying it like this, but I have to do it because… I like you, and I don't know if you feel the same for me."
Maya turn her back to him and placed her hands over her mouth. Phoenix couldn't see her face, so he didn't know how to explain her reaction, but he immediately felt guilty. Did he said it too soon? He thought about everything that he did wrong, maybe he misunderstood the signals, and maybe Maya only saw him as a friend. Maybe there was something more, he couldn't tell.
In any way, he had the feeling that he just ruined the moment. He looked away, the situation turned terribly awkward.
"I'm sorry." He mumbled. "I shouldn't have said that. I…"
"No." Maya muttered. "Its… it's alright, I just wasn't expecting…"
She looked at him, Phoenix saw a tear rolling down her face to her chin, where it fell. Her face had an insecure smile, she wasn't reproaching anything.
"You… like me? You mean you really love me?"
"Yeah… that's what I said." Phoenix looked at her in the eyes, he could see a swirl of emotions in them.
"But… you haven't got your memories back… you can't do that to me."
"Why not?"
"What do you mean why not?" She exclaimed. "What if the moment you recover your memories you realize you don't love me?"
"I… You mean that you feel the same for me?"
Maya opened he mouth to talk, but she looked down as if she was regretting what she said. Phoenix smiled warmly and put a hand on her shoulder to make her raise her head.
"How could I not like you? You always been so kind, so stupid from time to time, but you always been nice to me… Now I feel stupid, you only believe you like because of what I had been doing these last few days for you. When you recover your memories you will realize that it's not true."
"No." He replied, seriously. "Maya, this is something real. I know that before the accident I felt the same."
"How can you be so sure?"
From all the answers, he kissed her. It was a bit clumsy since she was startled and tried to back away, but she ended closing her eyes and go along with it. When they broke away they looked at each other in the eyes.
"I love you." He repeated.
"Me too." She replied.
They kissed again, they lips meet and their kisses became more impudent, more deep; they laid in the bed, looking for a more comfortable position.
A few moment Maya forgot all of her doubts, she returned all the caresses and the kisses form Phoenix as if she wanted to do it from a long time ago. And, as he could tell, she did. And he as well, let himself go for the feeling that was too intense to be real.
After a while, maybe minutes or hours, all the kisses and caresses derived into something more. He then felt Maya struggling and he broke away to look at her. She was beautiful, her hair was messily loose on her shoulders. Her robes were half open and showing part of her body, from the line of her breast to the curves of her belly, Phoenix could almost feel the heat emanating from her, raising his desire for her. But she had a look of remorse, like if she doubted if what they were doing was right. He understood that he was going too fast, at least to her, so he sweetly kissed her and lay by her side.
He wanted to continue, that's what he wished in those moments, but he didn't want to rush Maya. Besides, the day already was going fast. She hugged him tightly and rested her head on his chest, Phoenix smiled and closed his eyes, but for some reason he felt incredible tired, so he lowered his head until he buried his face in her hair, breathing her scent. He lay like that for a while, until falling asleep.
