"Will you stop worrying you look great," Clara laughed as she sat on her bed and watched as the Doctor paced up and down her bedroom while fiddling with his bow tie. Clara could see that it was nervous and she couldn't help but laugh at the fact, even though they both knew what tonight was. It was the last night that the Doctor met River and his nervous attitude wasn't just about looking okay but it was about making tonight perfect for his wife. "Doctor tonight will be perfect," the brunette smiled as she climbed off the bed and stepped towards him, her arms wrapping tightly around him as he sighed and buried his face into her hair.
"Of course it's going to be perfect," he blurted out as Clara stared up at him. "Why wouldn't it perfect? River and I are going to have an amazing time together and nothing's going to ruin that! No alien invasions, no wars, no death…" he began before falling silent, realising that the whole evening revolved around death. River's death, the death of the woman he loved! "I…" he whispered before sitting down and burying his face into his hands while Clara remained silent. "I don't know how I can sit there tonight knowing that this is the last time I'll see her. She's going to go to the Library and meet an earlier me who doesn't understand how wonderful she is and she's going to die alone when I should have been there," he declared into his hands, Clara moving to sit beside him before she grabbed his hands and moved them away from his face to reveal the tears that were running down his cheeks. "I just want her to know how much I love her."
"And she does know Doctor, everyone knows how much you love her," Clara whispered. "You married her, you had a baby with her," she smiled as she squeezed his hand before pressing a kiss to his cheek. "You had me Doctor."
"I know Clara," the Doctor sighed before tightly wrapping his arms around her and smiling. "I better get going, I don't want to be late," he explained before standing and brushing his hands across the suit jacket, making sure that it wasn't creased before he turned to face her. "Should I wear a hat?" he asked, laughing when Clara immediately shook her head.
"If you want to be target practice all night go ahead," she muttered as he nodded slowly and moved towards the door while Clara shook her head at him. "Try not to think about what's going to happen, just enjoy tonight," she called out as he smiled and began to run down the stairs towards the front door. Clara always had good advice; he had to agree with that. Leaving the house, the Doctor quickly stepped into the TARDIS before moving towards the console and resting his hands on the levers.
"Take me to River sexy," he said almost silently, smiling when the familiar noise began to ring around the room. "Thank you," he sighed as they landed and he danced towards the doorway. "Flowers," he groaned to himself, running back to the chairs where the bouquet of red roses was waiting to be given to River. Walking out of the TARDIS for the second time, he slowly approached the house and knocked on the door, surprised that it was already open. "River," he called out.
"I'm upstairs, come in," River replied as he rolled his eyes and stepped into the building, shutting the door behind him. Climbing up the stairs nervously, the Doctor ran his fingers through his hair before he approached River's bedroom and stepped inside to see his wife in a dressing gown while pinning her hair back. "I know I'm running late," she sighed as she turned to face him, a small smile covering her face as he continued to watch her in amazement. She really was beautiful! "Doctor?" River asked as he remained completely silent, his eyes looking down at where the gown was separating and revealing her cleavage. "Doctor, my eyes are up here you know," she stated, laughing when her husband blushed and immediately stared up at her face with a large smile covering his own as he moved towards her.
"These are for you," the Doctor stated, holding the red roses out to her as she smiled and took them from him.
"They're beautiful sweetie," River smiled before leaning forward and kissing him gently. "You really want to do the whole date thing don't you?" she commented as she held the roses for a moment before approaching an empty vase that as on her window sill. "Do me a favour and put some water in this for them," she smiled as he nodded and took the vase from her before disappearing into her bathroom. Returning moments later, the Doctor smiled as he watched her remove the black gown and grab the dress that was lying across her bed. "You're really in a staring mood tonight Doctor," she commented, snapping him out of his admiration of her as he quickly moved towards the roses and placed them into the vase while River finished putting her dress on. "Zip it up for me?" River asked as he nodded and moved towards her, zipping it up slowly as she smiled to herself.
"You're so beautiful," the Doctor whispered, leaning forward to press a kiss to her barely covered shoulder while her eyes shut at the touch. "How did I get so lucky that I married you?" he asked as she turned in his arms and stared up at him, her fingers running through his hair.
"People ask that every day Doctor," she smirked, laughing to herself when he rolled his eyes. "You've cut your hair," she commented, enjoying running her fingers through the shorter lengths as he nodded. "And you've got a new suit too," she noticed, glancing down at the newest outfit while his arms wrapped around her body tightly.
"I wanted to make tonight perfect for you River," he said simply before stealing another kiss from his wife while she laughed against his lips. "Tonight is about you and me and no one else Mrs Doctor," he whispered as he found her hand and entwined his fingers tightly with hers. "Ready to go?" he asked as she nodded, turning her bedroom light off as they left the room. Entering the TARDIS moments later, the Doctor smiled as River walked around the console room and move towards a seat. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"Sitting down," she said simply as he shook his head and moved her away from the seats, a laugh leaving her lips as he stood behind her and led her towards the console. "Doctor," she moaned as he began to kiss her neck again. "Stop it, you're acting like a horny teenager," she warned as he smirked against her skin.
"You can fly her tonight River, I've already put in the details," he whispered into her ear as shock covered her face. Had he really just said that? Had the Doctor really agreed to let her fly the TARDIS without any help? Feeling him step away, River turned her head to see him sitting down before she started to move the various levers he'd taught her to use in order to fly the TARDIS. Landing the blue box moments later, River quickly turned with a large smile covering her face as the Doctor beamed and ran towards her, lifting her into his arms as she squealed. "You're definitely a better pilot than I am," he stated as she shook her head and kissed him quickly.
"I had a good teacher Doctor," she whispered before he shrugged, her eyes rolling as he led her out of the box. "Is this…?" she asked as they stepped outside, shock covering her face as she stared at the view while her husband nodded slowly.
"I said I'd bring you one day," he whispered into her hair, laughing when she quickly ran ahead to look around in amazement. "River Song welcome to Darillium."

"You're spoiling me and it's not even my birthday," River laughed as she lay beside him on the grass, the sound of the Singing Towers behind them echoing around as she stared at her husband. "Want to explain to me why you're doing all this?" she asked as he glanced at her for a moment before staring up at the night sky.
"Am I not allowed to spoil my beautiful wife?" he asked as she straddled him before glaring down while he stared at her in amazement. "It's been an eventful year River. We lost Amy and Rory, we had a beautiful baby who is now a wonderful and intelligent young woman and you've got this amazing job opportunity that's going to take you away from me for a while," he stated, trying desperately not to think about her dying in the library with an earlier version of him. "I guess I wanted to celebrate this next step in your career and spend some time with you without anything happening," he explained as she nodded and leant across for her glass of champagne while he remained silent, not wanting her to move away from him.
"They're really as wonderful as you described," River commented as she glanced across at the Towers. "I knew they'd be good but now that I'm here…" she began before shaking her head and laughing when she felt his hand sneak up her back. "Doctor," she whispered as he sat up and kept her straddling his lap, their lips almost touching as she stared at him.
"I have something for you," he whispered as her eyebrows rose.
"I don't think here's an appropriate place sweetie, there are people all over the place and I really don't want to be caught," she smirked before her lips brushed against his lightly, the Doctor shaking his head at her comment.
"Not that River," he hissed before reaching across for his jacket which had been pulled off earlier in the evening. Removing the sonic from his jacket pocket, the Doctor sighed before he found River's hand and pressed it into her hold. "I want you to have this," he stated as she glanced down and found herself staring at the screwdriver in shock. Was he really giving her his sonic screwdriver?
"Doctor I…" she began, not knowing what to actually say. He was really giving her this!
"I have a new one and it was either get rid of it or give it to someone special who would I could trust to use it," the Doctor stated, laughing when she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, knocking him back into the grass. "I'm going to guess that you like it then River," he smiled, watching her as she sat up and nodded.
"I love it," she stated before she moved off him and lay down beside him, his arm wrapping around her as she cuddled into his side. "Doctor," she said quietly as he nodded, his eyes shutting as he continued to listen to the music that was becoming louder. "After the Library, I think I might stop the digs and stuff," she admitted as shock covered his face. Did River Song just say that? Glancing across at her, the Doctor saw the determination that was on her face as she clutched onto his shirt and smiled. "I'll still teach of course and I won't stop my adventures but I think I might spend more time with you, in the TARDIS."
"What's brought this on?" he asked quietly as she shrugged.
"Seeing Clara again, knowing that she's okay and I've had time to think about my life," she admitted as he turned onto his side so he was facing her. "I love my work Doctor but I love you more and nights like tonight and also the time I spent with Clara has made me realise that my work isn't everything! I want to be a wife and I want to be a mother, I know I can be a decent mother," she explained as he felt the walls of control that he'd built come crumbling down.
"Clara's a bit too old now to be mothered sweetie," he whispered, his hand reaching out to brush curls away from her face as she shook her head.
"We could try again," River suggested as she sat up and looked across at the towers, still amazed by how brilliant they were. "We would have to talk to Clara first, I don't want her to think we're replacing her or anything but we could do it. I know mum and dad wanted to have more kids and they would have done if it wasn't for the fact that mum couldn't," River blurted out as he remained silent. "And they adopted, they had a son."
"Antony, I know, Brian told me about him," the Doctor responded, not knowing what else to say. His wife was discussing a future, a future they'd never have. Shutting his eyes, the Doctor hoped that River wouldn't notice as he attempted to gain control of his emotions again.
"They had another child Doctor even after they lost me," she insisted as she smiled to herself. They could do it. They could have another child and they could be a proper family this time! They knew what had gone wrong last time and they could change that! "Doctor I want us to have a future," she stated before turning around, shock covering her face at the sight of tears running down her husband's cheeks. "Doctor?" she said quietly as he opened his eyes and forced a smile onto his face. Why did he have to cry? Why couldn't he just enjoy their evening? "Why are you crying?" she whispered as she brushed the tears away from his face, concern covering her face as he shook his head. "Sweetie, talk to me."
"I'm fine," he promised before kissing her gently. "I'm just happy that you want to do that," he said quietly, forcing himself to smile again as she continued to watch him, clearly not believing him. "When you come back we'll talk about it more River," he whispered as she smiled, turning around again as he shut his eyes for a moment. He had to stay strong for his wife. He had to make this a night that River would remember and treasure when she was about to die and that killed him.

"Doctor," River called out as she sat on the bed with the sheet wrapped around her, confusion covering her face as she stared at the en-suite that her husband had gone practically running into. "Are you okay?" she asked nervously, climbing off the bed with the sheet wrapped around herself tightly before she knocked on the door and waited for him to respond. "Sweetie what's going on with you? I've never seen you this emotional," she questioned as she stared at the wooden door before groaning and moving towards her clothes that were all over the floor. Finding the screwdriver he'd given her, River quickly unlocked the bathroom door and opened it to see her husband sitting on the edge of the bath dressed only in his boxers. "Are you going to tell me what's going on now?"
"There's nothing going on," he smiled as he stood up and wrapped his arms around her. "And you're already using that screwdriver against me," he stated as she shook her head and cuddled into his arms, worried about him as he pressed a kiss into her curls. "Stop worrying about me, everything's okay, I'm just being silly River," he whispered as she glanced up at him and brushed her fingers across his cheeks, noticing the red tear stains.
"It's not normal for even you to go running off after sex," she commented as he groaned, realising that that was probably a bit too obvious. "Was something wrong?" she asked quietly as he shook his head and smiled at her.
"You were amazing, you're always amazing River Song. Never doubt that," he promised as she continued to stare at him. "I'm just thinking about things," he admitted as her eyebrows rose, waiting for him to go into more detailed. "I'm trying to get over the fact that my beautiful wife will be abandoning me for a while to go gallivanting around a Library with strange men," he lied as she laughed and hit him gently. "I'm jealous River, I'm jealous of the men who are going to spend time with you while I'm stuck here on my own waiting for you to come home and I'm worried that someone is going to try hitting on my wife and I'm worried that something might happen to you while you're away and I won't know," he stated as she wrapped her arms around his neck and laughed at him for a moment.
"Anyone who tries to hit on me Doctor will be firmly informed that I'm a married woman and that they'll be in a lot of trouble if they try anything because my husband is one particularly dangerous man to mess with," she stated as he brushed her curls away from her face, cupping her cheek with his hand as she stared at him in amazement. "Is that seriously all you were worrying about? The fact that I'm leaving for a while," she whispered, still worried that there was something wrong. "Nothing is going to happen to me," she stated as he watched her. "We've studied the place, we're well equipped and I've got a sonic screwdriver," she explained before kissing him. "Nothing will happen sweetie."
"I know, I'm just worrying for no reason. I guess it's gotten worse since we had a baby," he explained as she nodded and kissed him again.
"I should be going now Doctor," she stated as he shook his head, his hand grabbing hers as she laughed. "Doctor they're collecting me in about two hours and I need to finish packing," she explained as she moved away from him and grabbed his shirt off the floor.
"Mrs Doctor that is not yours to wear," the Doctor stated as he watched his wife put the shirt on before collecting her own clothes off the floor. "You're not seriously going out dressed like that," he sighed, not surprised however when she winked and walked out of the room. "River," he called out as he followed her through the corridor, smiling when they entered the control room. "You are not leaving the TARDIS in that," he announced as she turned to face him.
"Sweetie we're parked right outside my house, no one is going to see me," she stated as he shook his head and moved towards her. "Will you stop being all protective Doctor? You're being ridiculous now," she whispered, her fingers running through his shorter hair while he stared at her.
"We have a time machine, we could just go back to bed," he whispered as she shook her head and stepped away again. "I'll even let you fly her, I won't get involved at all River. Let's just head back to bed for a couple more hours," he suggested while she shook her head at him and moved closer to the exit. "River Song," he called out as she began to open the door.
"What now?" she asked as she looked at him.
"I love you Professor River Song," he stated as she laughed and stared at him in amazement.
"I love you too and I'll see you soon, you wonderful man," she declared before walking out to get ready for the Library. Collapsing onto the floor moments later, the Doctor buried his face into his hands as he realised what had just happened. River Song had just walked out of the TARDIS and his life for the last time!
I hate this chapter- that's all I can say.
