ROYALS: CHAPTER THREE

Adrian

Nathan. My dear father, Nathan, was going lead the Moroi in Lissa's absence. I wasn't shocked at all because it does make sense, but I was hoping they'd pick someone, anyone, for the job.

I gave Lissa one last smile before frowning reflexively. Nothing good came out of my father and I's meetings.

Sydney

"Hey," said Trey as he took a seat across from our table in the cafeteria. I nodded in his direction in return.

"A nod is all I get?" he said as my fingers barely escape being squashed by my laptop closing in on itself.

"Hey!" I look up and see Jill grinning at me from ear to ear.

I glare at both of them in return. "Hi," I greet Eddie as he took his seat beside Jill.

"Hi, Sydney," said Eddie in return.

"Eddie gets a hi and Jill and I don't?" Trey complains as he take a bite of my lunch sandwich.

"Hey! Get your own lunch, Trey," I said as I take back my lunch.

"How's your schoolwork for the rest of the school year?" asked Eddie as he eyed the pile of clattered school work on my side of the lunch table.

"You miss him," Jill sang as I take my first bite of my lunch.

I roll my eyes at them in answer.

As much as I wanted to deny it, I did miss Adrian and I do wonder how he's doing at Court, but it can't be helped. We actually have acquired new "love phones" but for the sake of him taking his new job and responsibilities seriously, I decided not to distract him. Yet.

So, I've decided to distract myself instead. I've been doing homeworks and school projects that weren't due anytime soon in the near future so that I won't be tempted to text or call Adrian. So far, my plan is working well. Until Jill and Eddie came along.

"Have you called him yet?" Jill asked as she ate her lunch.

I nodded, "Yes, of course. I called him before he flew to Pennsylvania."

Jill rolled her eyes at me in return and sighed, "Because I'm a good friend, I'll let you know that Adrian hasn't had a drink since he got to court earlier today."

Pride for Adrian's strength filled me. Outwardly, I shrugged in nonchalance. "I always knew he could do it if only he got his head in it," and I did know because I believe in him. And I knew he'd be successful in leading the Moroi Court.

"Also, Sydney," said Jill hesitatingly, "There's bad news. Nathan is in charge of Court. Adrian is there as his adviser."

I close my eyes at that and tried to envision Adrian as his father's assistant, doing everything Nathan asks of him.

I open my eyes. "I'm sure he can do it," I said confidently.

Adrian

"I can't do it," I said to Rose as we were waiting for Dimitri inside the Military Meeting Room.

Rose sighed, "I know, but you have to try. Or at least act that you can obey his orders."

I grimace at the thought of obeying him. "I have no other choice, though, do I?" I said just as Dimitri entered the room.

"Rose, Adrian," said Dimitri as he each handed us a thick brown envelope. Rose groaned in complaint. Dimitri gave her a pointed look, "These are the security reports for the past week. Study them carefully; look for anyone with unusual behaviours, may them be Moroi or Dhampir."

"And if we did find someone with unusual behaviour? Will we just swoop in and arrest them?"

"No, you're to tell me and they'll be placed under surveillance for the time being," said Dimitri. He looked us in the eye and added, "There's been talk of another Court intrusion in the near future, and we want to avert it as soon and as efficiently as possible. Clear?"

"Clear," said Rose and I as a loud explosion shattered the fourth wall of the room we were standing in.

Sense of sound was the first to escape and the last thing I saw was Rose and Dimitri blurring in my line of sight.
