Explanations
It had been three days since Kakashi had had the team talk things out, it was Saturday which meant it was the girls get together lunch; just like every 10th was the day all the Rookie Nine and Team Gai met up as long as they weren't on missions. Naru was about twenty minutes late to the lunch, seeing as she was originally going to skip it, but decided against it.
"Naru!" Ino, Hinata, and Tenten greeted.
"Naru, I almost thought you wouldn't come," Sakura said, "I'm glad you did, everyone has missed you."
"Yeah, I almost didn't." Naru said, "But I'm glad I changed my mind."
"I'll leave if you'll feel better." Sakura gave Naru a sad smile.
"You can stay." Naru said.
"Of course Sakura's staying." Ino said.
"Ino's right, you two are never gonna fix anything if you don't talk," Tenten said, "We don't know what's going on but maybe we can help fix it."
"Um… N-Naru where's your r-ring?" Hinata asked, everyone gasped when they realized it wasn't on Naru's finger or around her neck.
"I gave it back when Sasuke and I broke up." Naru said, just then the waitress came over, with everyone else's lunch and Naru ordered a Chef's Salad and glass of water, interrupting their reply.
"What happened?" Ino asked
"Yeah, Sasuke seemed really anxious for you to return home." Tenten said.
"Are you alright, you seem a little upset?" Hinata asked.
"Naru?" Sakura asked concerned it may be too soon, Naru caught her eye for a second and nodded.
"He feel in love with someone else while I was gone," Naru told them, "he was anxious for me to come home so he could break things off with me before starting something with her."
"Who?" the three girls asked.
"M-Me." Sakura answered after a couple moments realizing Naru couldn't finish. "Sasuke fell in love with me."
"What?!" Ino asked
"How could you do that to Naru?" Hinata asked so enraged her Byakugan activated, while Tenten was silent.
"Calm down you two are drawing to much attention." Naru said, "I'm glad you're upset for me but you can't stop your heart from falling in love with someone. I'm not going to tell you I'm over it, because I'm not but I will be some day so don't make a big deal out of it."
"Fine," the trio sighed and looked at the table.
"So I guess that solves the mystery of why you've been so cold to your teammates." Tenten said, "Everyone was starting to get really worried, hey Hinata why's your Byakugan still active?" It was true Hinata's Byakugan was active and she was staring intently at Sakura's stomach.
"Hinata stop it." Naru said in warning, "Not now."
"What's going on?" Ino asked, "Hinata looks pretty shocked."
"Can we not talk about it?" Sakura asked.
"Is this about why you were crying the other day?" Ino asked, "Because you seemed pretty upset for what you guys just dropped on us."
"I'm sure she's just hormonal." Hinata snarled.
"I said stop, now not the time for this." Naru said.
"I think Naru's right, let's just eat lunch and calm down," Tenten said, "both Hinata and Sakura look pretty upset." Naru's lunch arrived and the girls continued to eat their lunch in tense silence.
"I'm three months pregnant with Sasuke's baby." Sakura blurted out as they were finishing, "I'm sorry I've got to go." Sakura throw her money on the table and left the stunned girls alone as she ran from the restaurant.
"So that's what she was talking about the other day." Ino mumbled.
"Well, I'm still confused." Tenten said.
"I'm not, she's a slut." Hinata said.
"Hinata!" the girls said.
"Don't think so horribly of her or Sasuke." Naru said, "They already explained what happened to me. Before you ask yes I'm angry they didn't wait for me to get back, but I've already forgiven them."
"So what did happen?" Tenten asked.
"They had two much to drink at Sakura's party and ended up sleeping together," Naru said, "They swear it was the only time before I came home that they got together as anything but teammates and friends."
"You really believe them?" Hinata asked skeptically.
"They are a lot of things, but I know they are trustworthy." Naru said.
"They are only human," Tenten said, "It's not a surprise that they would make a mistake like that at least once."
"So what now?" Ino asked, "What do we do?"
"Nothing, it doesn't concern us." Tenten said.
"I say we just leave them to themselves," Hinata said, "I personally don't want anything to do with either one of them for hurting Naru."
"You don't have to ignore them Hinata, they haven't done anything wrong." Naru said, "I told you I already I have forgiven them both."
"So you're really alright with them being together?" Hinata asked, and Naru nodded her consent, "You're too forgiving sometimes, Naru."
"Obviously Sakura didn't get your forgiveness memo." Ino said, "She spent Wednesday afternoon crying at my house while your team was supposed to be training."
"Kashi-sensei made us talk things out," Naru said, "We did and I headed home, she seemed fine when I left."
"Well, I'm not really sure what upset her," Ino said, "She just kept babbling about how she ruined everything, it was all her fault, and you were never going to forgive her."
"I guess I should go talk to her." Naru said, "She's stressing herself out more than she really needs to, it could hurt the baby."
"Did you get Medic training while you were away?" Tenten asked.
"No, I researched about pregnancies while I was away," Naru said, "I had down time and thought I should learn the basics because I planned to – plan to have a family one day."
"Oh sweetie." Ino said comfortingly.
"Don't worry it just means Sasuke wasn't good enough for you." Tenten said, "Give it some time and you'll find the prefect guy."
"Yeah, I knew he wasn't good enough from the beginning." Hinata said.
"Did that opinion come from stalking around the village?" Naru asked laughing.
"I wasn't stalking you," Hinata said blushing, "I was finding ways to improve myself, and you just happened to be wherever I was observing."
"I'm glad it paid off over the years," Ino said, "It used to take forever to decipher your stutter."
"Well she still stutters around Kiba." Tenten smirked.
"H-he thinks i-it's cute." Hinata said.
"It is cute when your boyfriend make you nervous." Ino said.
"I agree," Naru said, "Speaking of boyfriends. I want to catch up with Sakura before she gets to hers, I still don't like being near him when I don't have to." Naru paid for her lunch then walked out of the restaurant. It took Naru twenty minutes to find Sakura, only because it took twenty minutes to walk from the restaurant to the red bridge Team 7 used to meet at during their Genin days.
"I thought I'd find you here." Naru said as she sat next to the crying girl, "So want to tell me what's wrong?"
"No, I shouldn't bother you." Sakura whispered.
"You're not bothering me if I asked," Naru said, "But let me guess what's wrong. First, you think I hate you and haven't really forgiven you. Which by the way it's not true, I haven't hated you from the beginning of this whole mess, I was disappointed in you and upset that you had betrayed me; also I believe you when you say you don't know how you and Sasuke ended up in bed together and forgave you all ready."
"Really?" Sakura asked as she looked at Naru.
"Yes, so please stop stressing," Naru said, "You should know how bad that is for the baby, you know that. As a matter-of-fact I've been putting you under too much stress since I got home, we're going to see Baa-chan right now."
"Wait she doesn't know what's going on yet." Sakura said.
"So we just have to tell her what we told the girls." Naru said quietly.
"I going to tell her the truth," Sakura said, "The real truth, she cares too much for you to be lied to. Plus, S-Sasuke and I talked about it and decided to tell Kakashi-sensei, Iruka-sensei, and Tsunade-shishou the real truth."
"Do what you want but I'm fine with them all knowing the story." Naru said, "Now come on we have to go get you checked on." Naru grabbed Sakura's hand and shushined them straight to the Hokage's office.
"Naru you know it's illegal to just appear in my office unless you're one of my ANBU agents." Tsunade said.
"Yeah, yeah, you can yell at me later." Naru said, "Just check on Sakura."
"Why is something wrong?" Tsunade asked as she got up from her desk and walked to Sakura, "Naru I need you to leave, and I can't have you stay."
"Could she stay please, Tsunade-sama," Sakura asked, "She already knows about the baby, as a matter-of-fact she the one who wants the check-up."
"Why?" Tsunade asked.
"I've put her under lots of unnecessary stress since I got back." Naru said, "I'm sure you've noticed the tension in my team."
"The whole village has noticed the tension." Tsunade said as her hand glowed green with healing chakra as she scanned Sakura's abdomen, "The baby is still fine but I would recommend you reduce you stress levels before it does do damage to the baby or worse," Tsunade told Sakura, "That means resolve this thing with Naru."
"We've already talked things out, baachan." Naru said, "Why else would I be worried about Sakura's baby?"
"Because you value the lives of innocent people." Tsunade told her, "Now do either of you want to tell me what happened or do I have to guess?"
"Umm…" Naru said uncomfortably.
"IsleptwithSasuke, weweredrunkanditwasamistake." Sakura rushed out afraid she would lose the nerve to say everything.
"So I take it he's the father?" Tsunade asked the girls, they both nodded enthusiastically, "How have you been handling the whole situation?"
"Fine," Naru said, "Kashi-sensei had us talk things out a few days ago."
"Sakura?" Tsunade asked.
"I think we're better now." Sakura said.
"Am to take it that you and Sasuke are no longer seeing each other, Naru?" Tsunade asked.
"We broke up when I learned about the baby," Naru said, "I know what will happen once the council learns about the pregnancy."
"Huh?" Sakura asked.
"Anyway, I was really hurt when I found out," Naru said, "But I still think of Sasuke and Sakura as family, so I've forgiven them; even if I'm not completely over it all yet."
"It's nice of you to take the high road, Naru." Tsunade said, "I am however severely disappointed in you Sakura, I thought you had better judgment skills than to be having drunken one night stands with your best friend's boyfriend."
"I'm sorry Tsunade-sama," Sakura said crestfallen.
"I think you should go home and rest," Tsunade said, "While checking on the fetus I realized you've been sleeping poorly if at all recently. You know that is not good for you or the baby. Naru, I need to speak to you so you stay."
"Hai Shishou." "Got it Baachan." The girls responded and Sakura left.
"So care to tell me why your being so forgiving of those two," Tsunade asked, "I can tell you're anything but alright with this. Not to mention no one is so forgiving as to forgive their boyfriend and best friend for sleeping together, especially when said boyfriend practically proposed to you in the past."
"It wasn't their fault." Naru said.
"Don't give me that excuse," Tsunade snarled, "I spend 90% of my time three sheets to the wind, and you don't see me accidentally sleeping with Jiraiya. So drunk isn't a reason."
"We both know that wouldn't be an accident, it'd just give you both an excuse to write off your feelings some more," Naru said, "As for Sasuke and Sakura they explained what happened, so I know it wasn't their fault."
"Oh really?" Tsunade said, "And you trust their word after what happened?"
"Normally I wouldn't have, but it was just too coincidental," Naru said, "It happened at Sakura's 16th birthday party. She is the youngest of us because of how the academy accepts students. Anyway we made a promise after we all became Genin that no alcohol until we were all 16, which is legal drinking age for shinobi."
"I know the drinking age, gaki," Tsunade said, "I don't care if they were drunk for the first or hundredth time, it they were able to have sex they should have been able to identify each other, which means they knowingly betrayed you."
"I don't think they did know," Naru said, "According to them they each only had a handful of drinks, which isn't enough to do anything to a trained shinobi because charka burns off the alcohol faster. Anyway they don't remember anything and I believe one of the Elders had something slipped in their drinks; we know how unhappy they were about mine and Sasuke's relationship."
"They wouldn't go that far," Tsunade said incredulously, "I know they are all sneaky bastards, but for them to sink so low."
"I've been thinking about it and I think they wanted to achieve a couple things," Naru said, "I think they wanted to separate me and Sasuke, as well as hoping that such a betrayal would lead me to losing control of the Kyuubi. They always feared Sasuke and I would have children and they would be touched by the Kyuubi."
"So that's your only reason, because you house the Kyuubi?" Tsunade asked.
"No, but it is the main reason." Naru said, "Not very many people understand fuuinjutsu, that's where most of the hatred and fear towards me comes from, I'll even admit it was one of my fears that Kyuubi would have some influence over any children that stopped me from having a physical relationship with Sasuke before I left."
"You were thirteen." Tsunade said.
"Yeah, and my team had also witnessed the blood deaths of about 30 men on our first C-rank mission." Naru said, "I think that marks us as fully qualified shinobi, don't you?"
"Yes," Tsunade said, "Have your fears of the Kyuubi's influence been resolved?"
"As I learned more about fuuinjutsu from Ero-Sennin they have," Naru said, "He even said in another year or two I'll be a Fuuinjutsu Master, but we were talking about the Elders and my teammates."
"Fine, so what other reasons do you have to suspect the elders of such a treacherous act?" Tsunade said.
"What if I told you Jii-chan would let me hid under his desk during his meetings with the Elders when I was younger?" Naru said, "He couldn't interfere in my life, as it was not a top-priority. So his way of protecting me was to simple let me in on their plans before hand; you see the Elders wanted me to become a member of this organization called Root."
"But Sensei disbanded them." Tsunade said.
"Officially yes, but Jii-chan knew that Danzo didn't and even had the other Elders silent-backing." Naru said, "Long story short the Elders and him were always in a silent war over my freedom, until I became a Genin. The Elders wanted me to become an emotionless weapon for the village and Jii-chan just wanted me happy."
"What about the council?" Tsunade asked.
"They were split 50/50," Naru said, "so really if Jii-chan or the Elders made a move unchecked it could have started a civil war in the village, one that Jii-chan would have won but it would have ruined our village. Once I became a Genin and found out about the Kyuubi Jii-chan and the Elders made a verbal agreement that should I ever lose control of the Kyuubi I was to be given a choice."
"I have never heard any of this!" Tsunade outraged, "How dare hose old coot keep this from me. What are your choices?"
"I'm gonna guess they never said anything because they knew you would try to protect me like Jii-chan did," Naru said, "As for my choices they are die and have a new vessel be chosen or have my memories wiped and be placed under Danzo's direct command."
"Their right," Tsunade snarled, "That old War hawk will get his hands on you over my dead body."
"I appreciate that but I don't think it's really necessary at this point." Naru said, "Ero-sennin has been helping me learn to control both my temper and the Kyuubi's chakra. So I can handle up to three-tails worth of his chakra; my temper is still a work in progress, but he said as long as I keep myself in check I should be fine."
"What happens is you use more chakra than you can control?" Tsunade asked.
"At four-tails I have a sort of out-of-body experience," Naru said, "I can see and hear what's going on around me but I don't really have control of my body; however Ero-sennin came up with strong suppression seals for if that happens. The real tricky part is they need to be placed on my skin somewhere, hence why I wear such revealing clothes now." Naru gestures to her orange top that had a low V-neck collar and ended two-inches about her navel and the tight low-riding shorts she was wearing. "It can be placed by anyone they just have to be fast enough to evade any attacks I might make."
"And what happens beyond four-tails?" Tsunade asked, "Also how many tails can the seal suppress?"
"Were not really sure how many tails it can suppress, but the most I've reached is Six-tails according to Jiraiya," Naru said, "I don't remember because I blackout completely at five-tails."
"Naru, what happened?" Tsunade asked at the tone Naru was using.
"I hurt him really bad, I thought he was going to die," Naru said as she started to cry, "We were at a natural hot spring when I came to, we were miles from where training. His chest was crushed and his lung was punctured, he just smiled and said he was glad I was alright. I started to panic and he used some of his remaining strength to summon a toad; if it wasn't for her knowing medical jutsus he would have died."
"Why didn't you guys return after that?" Tsunade asked shocked.
"I wanted to, but he said he was fine and we didn't need to worry you about it." Naru said, "The toad healed him as best she could and then I brought him to the closest hospital I could, we henged and hid our headbands saying we were unaligned shinobi and there was a training accident."
"I see," Tsunade said, "Does Kakashi know all this?"
"Yes, Ero-sennin even gave him a handful of suppression seals," Naru said, and on the off-chance he uses them all up I know how to make more. But like I said earlier I have enough control that he council won't get their way and eventually I will prove myself and the villager will support me; as it is some of them are already changing."
"Well, I know most people were glad you make it home from your trip safely," Tsunade said, "As a matter of fact a lot of people were complaining it was to quite with you gone."
"I'm being serious here," Naru said, "The lady who lives next door to me asked if I was alright after Sasuke and I broke up. The walls are really thin and I was sorta shouting at him when I first learned Sakura was pregnant. The woman used to yell at me and call me all sorts of vile things, but instead of rubbing salt in the wounds like I thought she was kind and almost comforting; saying all men were like pigs only five times as stupid."
"Which is true." Tsunade said, "So what are you going to do now?"
"Train with the team like usual," Naru said, "Sasuke and Sakura want to fix our friendship, and if I'm honest I'm not really all that willing to give up my two closest friends over the meddling council and bad decisions."
"So you do blame them for what happened?" Tsunade asked.
"Partly, shinobi train their body to be unaffected by regular 'date' drugs," Naru said, "So whatever was used on them just removed their inhibitions about being together; which means they already had feelings for one another, even if they aren't admitting it now."
"So you're saying they are already attracted to one another?" Tsunade asked.
"Sakura, was madly-in-love with Sasuke all through the academy and was still crushing on him when we started dating, she didn't speak to me the whole Chünin Exam unless she absolutely had to." Naru said, "But after the Sand and Sound Invasion and my fight against Gaara she said she was so afraid she was going to lose me that it made her jealousy seem petty and she accepted me and Sasuke being together, saying it was probably for the best anyway."
"That was mature of her," Tsunade said, "then again she had grown-up and really realized what it means to be a shinobi, which is the reason I agreed to her request to become my apprentice instead of handing her off to Shizune."
"Well, I thought she had would have grown pass her childhood crush for Sasuke," Naruto said, "But I still feel more betrayed by Sasuke seeing as he promised to wait for me and swear he wouldn't even look at another girl while I was gone. Now, don't get me wrong I didn't expect him to isolate himself from the female population or to stop training with Kakashi and Sakura while I was gone, but I did think he loved me enough to not check out our team mate while training. I knew while I was growing and maturing they would to but I never thought he'd find her attractive in anyway."
"Why?" Tsunade asked seeing Naru was just venting her frustrations.
"He used to do nothing but complain about her." Naru snarled, "'She doesn't take training seriously.' 'Her voice is annoying' 'Why must she wear so much pink, isn't her hair enough.' 'She's ugly, and has nothing but book smarts.' 'She worries about her appearance too much.' The list of things he said could go on, but other than no longer screeching all the time and taking being a kunoichi seriously she hasn't changed all that much. I mean she's still looks the same as when I left, except her muscles are more toned, she's taller, and she now has an A-cup chest. Her personality is even almost the same, except she's less self-absorbed, what about her made him fall in love with her and out of love with me?"
"Oh Naru," Tsunade said as she rounded her desk and wrapped the girl in a hug, "I don't think it's that simple, it never is." She just let the young girl cry on her chest until the tears stopped, "There feel better now? It never good to keep things in."
"Yeah, I feel much better now," Naru said, "I'm still upset but I'll survive."
"Good, why don't you go home and take a nice long bath," Tsunade said, "You could even use the bathhouse or hot springs if you want seeing as Jiraiya is out of the village for the next few weeks."
"Yeah, I think that's what I'll do," Naru said, "I haven't done that in a while, even though I know he'd never peep on me, I never really wanted to risk it when we were traveling."
"Wise decision," Tsunade said, "sometimes Jiraiya's brain doesn't work properly."
"True, so I'll leave now," Naru said, "I'll see ya later."
