I originally had this and the next as one chapter but I split it up due to it being longer than I thought it would.

The halls of Elementary High were eerily quiet. Everyone had gone home for the day, all except a certain group of kids. Carrie led the Newman's and Kin through the empty halls. Konnie held a butterfly net, Larry wore a football helmet, and the others held baseball bats. They were prepared for Hex to attack at a moment's notice.

The 5 walked close to each other as they approached a door. Carrie looked through a crack in the door to see something moving inside. She motioned for the others to follow her as she crept inside. Inside was a science classroom. The beakers lay on the desk awaiting their next use and the lights were turned off. Konnie's eyes darted around cautiously. She felt something bump against her and looked to see a fake skeleton in a sombrero.

"AAA-" Kim swiftly pinched her sister's lips shut "Shh, we don't want to let Hex know we're here." Kim whispered. "Oh, I already know you're here."

The gang was startled and looked for where the sound had come from. One beaker started smoking and a set of eyes set its sights on them "AAAAAAAH! He's here!" Konnie shrieked.

Putting on a brave face, Kin rushed at Hex with his baseball bat "Die evil demon!" he smashed the bat directly through Hex, breaking the beaker underneath him. "I'm not solid, you know." Hex deadpanned. Kin shrugged "Eh, it was worth a shot."

Hex's smoke expanded towards the group, Kin backed away and dropped his bat "Everyone, scatter!" Carrie ordered. The five split up as Hex came towards them, ducking and running out whatever doors they could reach. Kin and Kim escaped to the hallway, Larry hid in the janitor's closet, and Carrie and Konnie headed towards the stairs. Hex contemplated which to pursue, settling on the girls as he floated up the staircase.

WICKED COOL TRANSITION

Carrie and Konnie climbed the stairs as fast as their legs could carry them. The drummer tripped on a step and fell down "Konnie!" the frontwoman turned around to help her bandmate "Get out of here Carrie! My stubby legs will only slow you down!" Konnie pleaded.

"No Newman gets left behind!" Carrie grabbed Konnie by the wrist and pulled her along with her, dragging the drummer against the stairs as her head hit every step along the way "Ow-ow-ow-"

The two made it to the school's roof. They searched for an exit but the only one to be found was by jumping down to the ground below "Oh sh-" Carrie nearly swore till her friend yanked her around towards the door. Smoke phased through the metal door as Hex caught up to them, "Here's Hexy!"

The Newman's clung to each other, terrified of what could happen to them "Konnie, if we don't make it out of here alive, I just want you to know I always thought you were an amazing friend!" Carrie confessed.

"Carrie, if we die then I need to say... I was the one who clogged the toilet in the girls' bathroom!" Konnie cried hysterically. The guitarist stared at her in bewilderment.

Hex formed himself into a spear, one that looked pretty solid, even though he was made of smoke. Konnie hyperventilated while Carrie peered over the edge of the roof. A defiant smile crossed her face. The guitarist pushed herself and her drummer over the railing within a hair's reach of the spear.

The girls screamed as they plummeted downwards and into the bushes below "... oh my rock gods… WE'RE ALIVE!" Konnie cheered, then she noticed the leaves and twigs in her hair and gasped "My hair! You monster!" she waved her fist at Hex. Carrie put her arm in front of her friend "Wait, look!"

Following Carrie's eyes, Konnie noticed Hex had not followed them. Rather, he tried to float over the side but repeatedly bumped against an invisible barrier of sorts. "Is there like a wall up there that we missed?" Konnie wondered, "It's trapped in the school! The creepy janitor was right!" Carrie pointed out, "We gotta go tell the others."

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHERS

Kin and Kim scurried into the empty cafeteria. It was so lively during the day that it was a tad unnerving to see it unchaotic "Wow, I haven't seen the cafeteria this empty since they showed us what was in the mystery meat surprise." Kin remarked.

Kim took a seat at one of the tables, followed by Kin moments later "How do we beat something that isn't solid?" Kim sighed. They couldn't hurt Hex but Hex could absolutely hurt them. Kin wasn't as concerned "Hey, my band has beaten alien orbs, a happiness sucking robot, and an evil guitar. We can handle an old demonic ghost with a misplaced lust for vengeance. I mean, for once we had absolutely nothing to do with it."

"You let him out." Kim reminded her counterpart, "Can we drop that already?!"

Kin noticed the thoughtful look on Kim's face. She probably hadn't even heard what he had just said "Something on your mind Kim?" The Newman nodded "I'm thinking about that gift of heart mentioned in the prophecy. Corey thinks it's music, but I'm not so sure."

The Grojbandian had to agree "Yeah, that's just how Corey thinks. Hex's sealing had nothing to do with music. It's obviously something else. Something so obvious it's right in front of us." the two keyboardists pondered for a moment, "I got nothing." "Same." They shrugged.

"So wait, if you knew music probably wasn't it? Why'd you let him and Kon go off to make Trina go diary?" Kim asked. Kin sat there blankly, then pounded his head into the table. "You didn't think about that, did you?" "Would you stop being right all the time!" Kin complained.

"Aw, you two fight like an old married couple." the nerds gasped, noticing the smoke that crept into the room while they were distracted. Kin grabbed Kim and ran over behind the food counter. They grabbed some spoons and opened a box with a hazard warning on it "Launch the mystery meat!" Kim shouted. Grey sludge catapulted over the counter and made a direct hit with Hex. Surprisingly,The spirit shivered "Oh gross! Were there sheep bladders in that?!" "Actually, it's sheep's liver!" Kim corrected.

Not deterred by their attempt to fight him, Hex formed an axe and swung down towards them. Kim pulled Kin out of the way as the shadow axe made a dent in the floor right where Kin's head had been moments prior. The nerds escaped as Kim got a hold of the fire extinguisher on the wall and blasted it at Hex, stunning him as Kin pulled her away and into a storage room.

Hex broke free of the foam and looked around for any sign of the two ""Dang, all I want to do is cause unnecessary murder and destruction?! Is that so much to ask?! I destroyed countless villages and I can't even kill a couple of meddling kids?!" he huffed, slumping over and mumbling to himself as he left, "Well I guess I'll go after that weenie next."

Kin and Kim held each other in a frightened embrace, waiting until they heard Hex leave "I think he's gone, for now." Kin informed her. The two blushed as they realized they were still holding each other and let go quickly. Kim tried to open the door, but it wouldn't open. "Awesome, we're stuck in here." Kim smacked her forehead "If I don't get some sleep before tomorrow night I'll be too tired to perform."

"The play is the least of my worries right now." Kin looked at his watch "The deadline for waking Laney is in 18 hours, we have to stop Hex before then!... When did I start wearing a watch?"
