Nothing compared to the feeling of his lips on hers, not after so long. She had nearly forgotten the pure bliss she felt with every slant of his lips over hers. And yet, a part of her had always remembered, the part of her that had continued to love him, even after so long.
Moments turned into minutes as the couple continued to kiss on the balcony. He pulled her ridiculous wig off her head, and her chocolate tresses tumbled down her shoulders as his hands then found their way to her waist, and her fingers began to play with his silky blonde hair. Neither wanted this moment to end, but the need for air forced them apart. "I love you," he murmured repeatedly as he pressed his forehead to hers, panting in time.
"God, I missed you, Haruhi. I am so, so sorry. It was a stupid mistake, one I promise I will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for."
A small smile formed on her lips as she pulled away from his face. "So much time has gone by, and I hated you for so long." He stilled for a moment, but relaxed as she snuggled into his chest. "None of that seemed to matter, though once I saw you again. My walls were already crumbling by the time you came back that day. It just took a little bit longer. But if that was a proposal, the answer's no. You'll need to do much better than that." She grinned, knowing even as she said it that she was setting herself up for the embarrassment of a lifetime. But it would be done with the usual Tamaki style, and that was all that mattered.
He smiled, accepting the challenge. It might take a while – and more than one try, if she had been as angry as she claimed – but he would do it. A thought crossed his mind then, he anxiously searched his pockets. "I had a ring for you, I know I did. I kept it on me wherever I went."
"It's alright. It's not a big deal. Emilie has it."
The frantic search stopped, and he lifted his eyes to hers. "What do you mean she has it?" A moment passed, and his face clouded over with anger. "That's why it seemed so familiar. And how she convinced everyone she was my fiancée."
Haruhi nodded and pulled him back into her arms, reaching for him again. He grinned, complying happily.
"So, is this a random make-out session with some chick you don't remember, or was it a celebratory suck-fest?"
Haruhi quickly let go of Tamaki and jumped away at the sound of Hikaru's voice. Tamaki wasn't happy with the distance she put between them though and pulled her into his chest, resting his chin on her head. They'd been apart for far too long – he wasn't about to take even a moment for granted. "I remembered," he said, and left it at that.
The grin that split Hikaru's face was only matched by the one on Kaoru's. The happiness that radiated off the couple, however, beat both the twins. Hikaru clapped Tamaki on the shoulder. "It's about time, Boss. 'Cuz seriously, your girl here has been cra~zy since you've been gone. I mean, the wild parties, a different guy every night…"
Haruhi smacked him across the shoulder while Tamaki just laughed, knowing his friend was only messing with him. He did deserve it, after all, after putting her through so much. A little bit of teasing from the twins was nothing compared to that.
The older twin opened his mouth to spout more nonsense, but his brother put a hand on his shoulder and shook his head. "Now isn't the time, Hikaru. We have find Emilie."
Shocked, Haruhi just stared at the twins. It was a bad sign when Kaoru was the voice of reason in their group. Granted, Kyoya wasn't there, but still.
Tamaki nodded his head. "I would let her go – I owe her that much, at least – but if I do, I know she'll just come after us again, and I don't want to put Haruhi through that. Not when we just got back together."
"Don't worry. I have her location here." Kyoya stated, tapping on the screen of his laptop as he walked onto the balcony, Hunny and Mori right behind him. "She's in a café on Third Street. She just ordered a cup of coffee."
The Host Club shouldn't have been surprised, not after knowing Kyoya for so long, but it seemed his skills could still shock them. Haruhi shivered. There really wouldn't be any hiding from him, even if she did leave Japan. Not that she would want to. Not anymore.
Hunny's bangs covered his eyes as he hung his head. "I hate that woman. She's the reason it took us so long to get back together." His fists clenched with rage. "The Host Club is a family. She took that away from us!" He cried, throwing his head up and glaring at Tamaki. "No, it's your fault in the first place. None of this would have happened if you would've just proposed to Haru-chan that night like you were supposed to!"
His breathing was ragged, and the others just stood there, shocked into silence. Tamaki detached himself from Haruhi and walked up to Hunny, whose face was flushed deep red with anger. "Hunny…"
"You were going to propose that night?"
The sharpness of her words made him flinch. "Haruhi… I…" She crossed her arms, waiting for an answer. "Um… yeah."
Tears slipped down her face, but that was the only hint of emotion from her otherwise empty face. "You… were… going to… propose." He nodded slowly, not sure where she was going with her words. "That night, the night that you stood me up? The night you didn't call?" Again, he nodded, but a little more hesitantly.
Instead of saying anything further, she turned her back on the club and walked to the edge of the balcony, throwing her arms the edge. Her fingers dangled in the air, and she rested her head against the railing. He approached her slowly as the rest of the Host Club backed away slowly, wanting to give the couple space. But not so far as to be out of hearing range. They were still curious, after all.
"Haruhi, I had everything planned out. It was going to be perfect. If you said yes, of course. The restaurant was elegant, but not so formal that you would be uncomfortable, and the food would've been cooked to perfection. The champagne suited the chicken carbonara, not too sweet or bubbly. And just as dinner was reaching its end, I would excuse myself and walk over to the piano to play you a song I wrote for you. And then I would have asked you to be wife."
She turned around so swiftly that Tamaki took a couple steps back. "You would have, Tamaki. That's my point. I waited for you for hours, in that restaurant that you picked so carefully. And I know what the food tasted like. What I ate of it that night tasted like cardboard because I was sick with worry over you. Worried over nothing because while I sat there, anxious and sick, you were off with Emilie. You started all of this, Tamaki. You."
"Haruhi – "
"No. There's nothing you can say to make this better. Not this time. I saw you, playing the piano for her. On the night you were going to propose!? You left me, as far as I'm concerned, and I can't believe I was stupid enough to fall for you all over again." She stalked off, not wanting to be out on the balcony anymore.
"I didn't leave you that night, Haruhi! I was nervous and could barely think straight. And then there was Emilie, a girl I hadn't seen in years who I needed to apologize to. She wanted to hear me play, and I was only going to be there for a little bit. Twenty minutes, tops. But I lost track of time. It just slipped away, and I forgot as I played that there was something much more important."
She didn't turn around, but let the hand fall, not opening the door that would lead her into the hall. "You forgot? How is that any better, Tamaki? I must not mean that much to me if you forgot the dinner you were going to propose at."
"Haruhi, that's not –"
"I DON'T CARE!" She yelled, finally facing him. "I loved you so much. I don't think you understand how much. I waited for hours. I waited until the restaurant was closing, because you stood me up." He started to cross the floor, but before he reached her, she yanked the door open. "I can't do this again. I won't put myself through the pain." The tears she had tried so to hold back spilled over and ran down her cheeks as e reached out for her. "Goodbye."
The slam of the door echoed through the otherwise silent room. Tamaki ran and pulled it open. "HARUHI!" He screamed, but she had already disappeared.
And there's the end of that one. So, pretty much, Tamaki's mistake has come back to haunt him all over again, just minutes after getting his memory back. Sucks to be him right now. Review and I'll (probably) be a little nicer to our not-so-happy couple. If not… well, I can't be held accountable ;)
