I don't own Twilight. I just like twisting the characters in my own way.

Should Have Been Alert

"Ben, here's the last case of beer."

"Thanks, Sam. Can you put it with the others in the back?" Alice asked popping up from behind the bar.

He shook his head as he walked to the storage room to drop off the case. When he came back out, he laid his head on his folded arms on top of the bar. "Alice, what the hell are you doing here? Don't you know the meaning of taking the day off?"

"Why would I? I love this place. Plus, I live upstairs." She said pointing to the ceiling.

"Is that why you refuse to put in a karaoke machine?" He asked with a smirk.

"No, I refuse to get one because you boys can't sing." She answered as she began wiping down the back of the bar. "You seem to forget, I grew up around firefighters. You all are notoriously hot, but you can't sing to save you lives."

Sam cringed. "You're right, I am hot."

Alice threw her rag at him, laughing. "Keep that kind of talk for your wife and get your ass back over to the firehouse."

Sam just caught the rag and smiled. "Emily is not a jealous woman. She lets me share my hotness with the world. But you are right; your father could make the deaf cry with his singing. Everyone hates it when he sings in the firehouse shower."

She laughed, hearing him singing in the shower in her memories from when she was a kid.

Sam laughed with her and pushed off the bar to head back to across the street. When he got to the door, he turned and yelled, "I expect a free one of those beers when I get off, Alice."

"I know. You always do." I called to his back as he opened the door. "By the way, thanks for walking ALL the way across the street to help carry them in."

The rest of the night was slow. A few regulars, like Dr. Gerandy and his wife, popped in for a beer and a bite. For the most part, Alice was able to give the bar a good cleaning while a couple of the sheriff's men was patrolling around the outside of the bar.

Jasper and Sam came into the bar just as she was about to lock the door for closing. Jasper wrapped his arms around her shoulders to pull her in for a hug and kissed her forehead. Sam chuckled at how Jasper had changed since Alice become the center of him world.

"This is all cute and everything, but we came over here for a reason, Jasper."

"You are right," Jasper said sliding his hands to her shoulders. After gently forcing her to take a step back, he began, "There was a big accident out on the highway between here and Forks. A couple of rigs and a few cars were involved."

Alice began to shake. "What? Who?" She manager to whisper before her throat closed with a sob.

"No one we know, but it is still a big accident." Sam said taking her hand and squeezing it. "The way it affects you is the sheriff needs to pull his men to the accident and to cover the rest of Port Angeles."

Alice nodded her head and swallowed the lump in her throat.

Jasper took her hand and began to lead her to the kitchen. "Let's go pack you a small bag for tonight. You can sleep at the fire house tonight. Maybe we can even get a poker game going and you can help me clean these guys out."

"Okay," Alice said with a small smile as the door opened up again.

"Jasper," Edward said as he walked into the bar. "Do you have to go to that accident?"

Sam looked confused. "No, I thought that Forks was handling the two small car fires."

Edward nodded his head, "They probably are. I had just gotten out of a movie when I heard the sheriff say he had to pull Alice's detail over my scanner. I came to see if I can help."

"Alice is going to come over to the firehouse." Sam explained still confused. "We have her taken care of, Edward."

Jasper continued to walk Alice out while Sam tilted his head to indicate that Edward should leave.

"What will happen if you get a call?" Edward said stopping everyone. "What are you going to do about protecting Alice if that happen? You didn't think about that, did you?"

"If we get a call, I will stay behind and call things from the fire house." Jasper said turning around as he and Alice rounded the bar.

"Jasper, you know as well as I do that arrangement will never be effective." Sam said seeming to be conceding.

"I can stay here with her, so she doesn't have to sleep on an uncomfortable fire house bed." Edward said calmly to Jasper. "I know what you are thinking. I'm sorry. I was a jerk the other night. I know it is not a good excuse, but I was tired and I am still getting used to more responsibility at the Forks fire house since you left. "

Jasper looked at Sam, then at Alice, and back to Sam. "If Alice agrees, I guess that would help."

"Edward ad I will be fine." Alice commented as she wrapped her arms around Jasper's waist. With a small smirk, she giggled, "Maybe he will even let me braid his hair."

"Not a chance, Alice."

Alice went up on her toes and kissed Jasper quickly. "Come on, Edward. I have to start brushing your hair straight away if I am going to braid it."

"No, Alice."

"Lock up as you leave, Sam and Jasper." Alice called walking through the kitchen door.

"Alice, wake up."

Shake.

"Alice, you need to wake up. Please, wake up."

Shake. Shake.

"ALICE! WAKE THE FUCK UP!"

Shake. Shake. Shake.

"Sam, it is time to go! The floor is going to collapse soon."

"I can't get Alice to wake up!"

"Just grab her! I have her meds. Get her out, Sam!"

Alice felt Sam's strong arms slide underneath her and lift her away from her bed.

Then, she heard and felt a resounding crash shake echo and shake her home, livelihood, and world.

"Alice, wake up."

Shake.

"Alice, you need to wake up. Please, wake up."

Shake. Shake.

"ALICE! WAKE THE FUCK UP!"

Shake. Shake. Shake.

"Darlin', please wake up!"

Alice was still shaking, this time on her own when she opened her eyes. She sat straight up and immediately wrapped her arms around Jasper.

"Alice, what happened? Edward called over to the firehouse because he couldn't wake you up. I could hear you screaming through the phone!" Jasper said holding her tightly. "When I stepped out of the fire house I could hear you screaming across the street.

"It was a dream. It was all a dream." Alice whispered into his chest.

Jasper kissed the top of her head. "Alice, what was a dream? Can you tell me?"

"The bar went up in flames along with the apartment." She choked out. "Sam was trying to get me to wake up, but I wasn't waking up. You told him to grab me and go. He had just taken a couple of steps with me in his arms when the floor collapsed. That is when I woke up."

"It is going to be okay. No one is going to burn the bar." Jasper assured her.

Edward and Sam exchanged glances. Edward looked confused, but Sam looked worried. Sam knew that in the past Alice's dreams had come true.

"How did I let Edward convince me to come back to the fire house?" Jasper said pacing the truck bay over and over again in front of Sam. "Why did I leave her? I mean she had just stopped shaking when you got that radio call."

"She will be fine." Sam said reassuringly. "You will be off in just a little while and can go to her. Alice is stronger than she looks."

"I know. I know." Jasper said as he slowed down his pacing. "Let's get a few hours of shut eye. Alice will yell at me if she finds out that I didn't get any sleep because I was worrying about her."

"Alice, Edward, I'm home." Jasper called as he opened up the apartment door for Sam, Emmett, and himself.

No one answered.

The three men began to panic. Emmett ran down to check for Alice and Edward in the bar. Sam ran toward the bathroom and threw open the door. Jasper began looking behind furniture and out of the windows hoping to find Alice or a clue as to where she was.

Emmett appeared as Sam and Jasper were standing up from looking under the bed. "They aren't in the bar or kitchen. Where can they be?"

A couple of minutes of silence became deafening in the apartment. Then, a giggle from the bottom of the stairs broke that silence. "You mean to tell me that Jasper, a native Texan, puts beans in his chili." Alice said between more giggles that were getting louder. "I know his mamma didn't teach him that."

Jasper crushed Alice to his chest. "I thought you were gone."

"I just went to the grocery store. You came home early." Alice joked to break the tension in the apartment. "I am just glad I let Edward carry the bags up the stairs."

Edward clapped Jasper on the shoulder over Alice's head. "I told you. You can trust me."
