I do not own Twilight or the characters in it. I just like messing with them in my own way.

Unexpected Turn of Events

Alice sat alone in the dark, thinking. Her mind flitted from one focus to another. First she would focus on what Lyle Cullen had revealed about himself and his hatred toward her and her family. She, also, tried to figure out exactly where she was and how she could possibly escape.

Lyle must somehow be related to the woman Carlisle had a one night stand with. He could be a much younger brother, maybe a younger cousin or a nephew. The last option that popped into Alice's head was maybe he is that woman's son and Alice's half brother.

From their two previous encounters and now, she knew that he is tall with a lanky build. His muscles were taut and sinewy. She saw a flash of pale fire in his hair when it was touched by the moonlight. When she concentrated on the car accident where he sliced her stomach, she remembered focusing on his muddy brown eyes that didn't seem quite right as they stared back at her. Alice shook her head trying to get rid of those eyes.

Changing her thoughts to her surroundings, Alice could tell that a large body of water is not that far away. She could hear the water slosh and smack onto its shore when something heavy splashed into it not too long after Lyle Cullen had left her. Depending on how far Lyle had driven with her unconscious, the only two large bodies of water are the lake Dr. Gerandy had created on the edge of his property and First Beach in La Push on the Quileute Reservation. The orderly line of trees that she had quickly glimpsed outside of the door when Lyle opened it supported the first location.

Alice moved her body this way and that, wincing as she did. She was trying and failing to loosen the ropes that bound her to the chair. Frustrated she huffed and yanked her fists into the wooden slat they were bound around. She heard the smallest creak of the wood. Alice leaned back into the chair, even tipping it back some. Then, she jerked forward to hit the wood again. The wood creaked a little more this time.

Alice repeated these actions over and over again until on time she leaned to far back. She crashed to the floor with the wood making an echoing crack and snap. She could tell she had broken a finger or two when she landed on them, but she didn't care. The wooden slats had all snapped. She rolled to her side with her legs still attached to the chair. Being able to move her arms more, she worked to free them from the rope.

As she laid there struggling, she heard movement outside of the dark room that she was in. The door opened and moonlight spilled into the doorway and glinted off of the barrel of a shot gun.

"This is the last time I am going to ask you politely, Edward." Carlisle said in an eerily calm voice as Ben got off his cell phone. "What message did the man tell you to pass on to me?"

Edward's face went pale. "He said… he said… you made the bed, but your daughter has to lay in it."

All of the officers, fire fighters, and paramedics in the bar looked back and forth between Edward and Carlisle. Sheriff Black finally broke the silence that had filled the room. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means I slept with his mother twenty-six years ago. One drunk, one night stand lead to all of this: to Alice needing a kidney transplant and Rosalie with a hairline fracture in her skull, to me being in this wheelchair for the rest of my life, to the girls' car accident where Rosalie lost her baby and Alice was sliced, to that once beautiful woman being killed by her son, and finally to Alice being kidnapped."

"What do you mean that woman was killed by her son?" Jacob Black questioned after everyone let Carlisle words sink in.

"I received a visit right before Esme and I were going to come here." Carlisle started. "The Aberdeen Police drove here to meet me. That woman was dumped in front of their station house this morning. She had been stabbed repeatedly in the stomach and was barely alive. They rushed her to the hospital in squad car, but she only made it for a block or two. One of the officers found a note safety-pinned to her breast just over her heart."

"What did it say?" Emmett, Sheriff Black, and Edward all asked quietly at the same time.

"Carlisle made the bed, but his daughter has to lay in it." Carlisle said in a deadly calm voice.

After several minutes passed, Emmett plopped hard onto a stool. "I still can't believe you slept with a woman that had Cullen for a last name. I would have been afraid of sleeping with a long, lost relative."

"Her last name isn't Cullen."

"But her son is Lyle Cullen!" Sam exclaimed. "Did he change his name?"

"Not legally that I know of. The Seattle Police have always thought he had twisted my name for himself because all of his documents turned out to be false. At the time, no one besides Lyle had ever been fingerprinted or DNA tested before that was even similar to his." Carlisle said looking toward Edward.

Emmett noticing Carlisle eyes stood and stepped slightly toward Edward. "What was her name, Carlisle?"

"Elizabeth Masen."

"Alice!" yelled Dr. Gerandy as he lowered his shot gun. "What are you doing tied up in my shed?"

"Oh, is this your shed? I thought it was someone else's. I'm sorry." Alice said sarcastically. "Can you help untie me so I can go to that other person's shed?"

After flipping the light switch, the doctor propped his gun up against the wall and ran to the young woman on the floor. "I kind of opened myself up for that one, didn't I? I will have to work on not doing that if I am going to continue to be your doctor."

"I don't think you are going to have the time to work on that, Doctor Gerandy." A harsh voice corrected from the doorway.

Alice and Dr. Gerandy both looked of his shoulder at the person in the doorway. The newcomer was standing tall covered in moonlight with the doctor's shot gun in his hands.

"Edward?" Alice whispered. "What are you doing?"

"I am not Edward, Alice." The man answered chuckling. "Though, he has been an excellent cover the past few months."

The man followed Dr. Gerandy with the gun as he pulled Alice, who was now unbound, to a standing position. The older man stood slightly in front of the young woman. "What do you want, son?"

"I am NOT your son!" The man yelled as he took a step into the shed. "I want the life I was supposed to have if my father had followed through with his responsibility. He made my mother fall in love with him. Then, the man left her when she was pregnant." He took another step into the shed. "My mother had to raise two boys on her own. We didn't have a father. My mother's parents cut us off. We didn't have half of the things we needed that you took for granted." He added using the gun barrel to point at Alice. "Finally, to round out my perfect childhood, my mother was arrested, just days before my high school graduation, for being the secretary and girlfriend of a violent loan shark."

Angela began to worry even more than she already had been before Ben called her. He told her that Alice was kidnapped and Edward had fallen into her step father's lake. The police were on their way to check out the lane for tire tracks and possibly the lake for clues.

Her step father had already gone out there. He had been gone for over thirty minutes. She decided to follow his path out to the lake to warn him about the incoming police.

Angela ran through the empty fields west toward the lake. When she was just a few yards away, she heard shouting coming from the shed that is in a field about fifty yards away from the north side of the lake. Using all of the knowledge she had learned from watching spy movies with Ben, she crept around the lake and toward the shed.

Angela grabbed a shovel that was lying in the middle of the field. She was suddenly thankful for her step father's habit of forgetting to put away his tools. Holding the shovel like a baseball bat, she approached the shed to hear an unknown man ranting about his absent father and his struggling mother. She knew that he was yelling at her step father and Alice.

Angela whistled like a mocking jay from the Hunger Games movie that Alice hated in order to warn her. The next couple of seconds seemed incredibly long as Angela stood outside the shed hoping the unknown man came out to investigate the whistling. After hearing a small gasp come from her friend, Angela leapt into the doorway and swung the shovel straight toward the stranger's head. Alice drove out of the way and brought the doctor with her. Lyle jerk when he was hit with the shovel and the shot gun created a window in the back shed wall.

Angela called Ben back to tell him what happened as the police arrived at the lake. Dr. Gerandy ran over toward the police to bring them over to the shed. Alice was kneeling on the floor holding a bloody rag to the gash on Lyle Cullen's head.

Jasper, Carlisle, Emmett, Sam, and Edward pilled into the bed of Ben's truck. They were supposed to follow the police cruisers out to the Gerandy Farm. Ben was too nervous for his wife, so he floored it and beat the cruisers and the ambulance by three minutes.

Angela ran straight into Ben's arms.

Sam and Emmett helped Carlisle out of the bed of the truck.

Jasper took off toward the shed with Edward still limping after him.

Alice looked up as Jasper appeared in the doorway pushing through the police that were already there.

Edward came in to see his sister refusing to move to allow Jasper or Dr. Gerandy to check on his brother. Edward lifted her chin. "Alice, we need to let Jasper, Dr. Gerandy, and the paramedics work on him. There is nothing more that you and I can do right now. Carlisle is outside. He needs to see that you are safe."

Alice cried, "I don't even know him real name."

Edward helped her stand as Jasper took over applying pressure to the head wound. "They will take care of our brother, Anthony."
