''Matt.''

Matt walked inside the office, closed the door behind him. For days he had prepared this talk in his head, but now he was sitting here across the chief all words had disappeared from his mind and he had no idea what to say.

''Chief. I am ready to c-come back. I can do it.''

''I know you can. But are you sure it's a good idea?'' The chief took the glasses from his nose and started to chew one of the legs as he looked at Matt. Matt was clearly nervous and Boden knew he had to know he wasn't overestimating himself again. Matt seemed to get paler every second and his hands were shaking on his lap. Boden wished the boy wasn't so nervous because Boden also knew Casey was going to get back one day.

''I can walk again, I can use my hand –''

''Completely?''

''Well, I guess a m-messy hand writing won't keep me from saving people and neither will my stutter. I need to come back chief.'' Matt shrugged while he sounded like he was almost begging the chief. Lately, the work on the academy had become harder and harder for him. He had thought it was a good job but he wasn't made for teaching but for fire fighting.

''My hand writing has always been messy anyway.'' Matt said with a nervous smile, hoping to convince the chief.

''I know, it was always hard to read.'' The chief said with a smile. ''But that decision is not just up to me and you know that.''

Matt nodded and the chief looked at the former lieutenant sitting in front of him. He knew he should be able to get Matt back on truck if there was no medical reason he couldn't, but it was also up to the CFD. Matt wouldn't be a lieutenant for now, but he would at least be able to come back as he fire fighter. He was pretty sure Matt wouldn't be upset Hermann was his superior now.

''I will go to the CFD with you and we will talk, but Matt, you can't come back as a lieutenant after you been away for so long. I hope you understand tha –''

''I don't mind.'' Matt said immediately, worried that the chief would think that would keep him from coming back. Sure, he had loved being a lieutenant and beside from the paperwork he was going to miss it a lot, but right now all he wanted was coming back on truck and at 51 and he was so close right now!

The chief nodded and Matt left the firehouse again as he looked at the paper in his hands, saying where and how late he had to be at the CFD tomorrow. Gabriela was not on shift as the other shift was now and he went home, where she looked surprised he was home already.

''I thought you had a long meeting at the academy.'' She said as he kissed her and she paused the movie she was watching.

''It was not t-that long after all.''

He sat down next her, doubting if he should tell her about what Boden said, but he knew she would get so exciting and maybe it was for nothing. She would be the first to know if there was good news. But lately there also been a lot of other good news. They had finally picked a day for their wedding and had booked their honeymoon to Miami. Her parents had looked a little strange when they had told they were going to Miami for their honeymoon as they had expected them to go to Dominican Republic as her family was from there. But her dad had given his blessing again and Matt was happy her parents were so supportive. His mom had also gone with her when they went looking for a dress and she kept teasing Matt that she knew what the dress was going to look like, but honestly he didn't want to know yet. She would look beautiful either way.

He was going to get married now, even though it was the thing he would never expect to happen.

''Okay, you are telling me you are not just getting married but you are also getting a kid?''

Matt laughed as he drank another sip of beer and looked through the bar they always sat after shift. Andy nodded, drinking some beer as well and he laughed then.

''Me, a father, who had ever expected that?''

Matt wanted to laugh first but he also knew that Heather and Andy were going to be great parents even though Andy didn't seem very convinced now.

''Remember what I always said in high school? No kids, no marriage and you always said you did want a family and now I am getting married and a kid before you.'' Andy chuckled but Matt could see in his face he was actually really glad.

''You already getting married this weekend.'' Matt shook his head, he couldn't believe it. Andy was actually get married.

Honestly, although he had told Andy he wanted a family one day, he wasn't sure about it after all. Or at least, he was not sure if he would ever even get married. What if he would end up like this dad? Even if he didn't join the military, maybe he would get traumatized too and his family would suffer. What if he and his wife would ever divorce, just like his parents?

''Matt?''

Matt shook his head, realizing he wasn't listening to Andy was he was thinking.

''Yeah, sorry.''

''I asked you what you think of the name Lisa.''

''You are going to have a girl?'' Matt said surprised, picturing Andy trying to braid the girls hair in his head and Andy shook his head, laughing.

''No, it is not sure yet but Heather is determined it is going to be girl. No, the echo is only in two weeks, so we have to wait a little longer.''

''I like Lisa as a girl's name. I mean, of course it is obvious Matthew is going to be the name for a girl, as the best man on earth is of course called Matthew.'' Matt goofed.

''I like Matthew Bellamy too!'' Andy laughed as he heard Muse playing in the back and he shook his head.

''No, Griffin, after my old man.''

''Oh, the Darden bloodline has had enough of the Griffiths? Griffin for a change. No, I like the name.''

Andy nodded and Matt tried to picture Andy holding a little baby. It was a strange picture in his head but yet it also seemed to fit. The kid would get the warmest household he could possibly grow up in and Matt hoped that every kid could grow up by parents like Heather and Andy, different than his home situation.

Nervous Matthew walked next to Boden through the hallways of the large CFD building and they entered an office.

Matt was quiet as Boden explained the situation and the officer looked at Matt.

''When was you last attack?'' The woman asked Matt as she was taking some notes.

''You can't exclude him from being a fire fighter for that.'' Boden interfered immediately.

''It's okay.'' Matt grabbed a sheet of paper from his bag and handed it to her.

''The last attack was t-two months ago, triggered by a wrong dose of medication. With my medication attacks will not happen anymore.''

The woman nodded and Boden looked aside at Matt, proud he seemed to prepared.

''Here is the list with all the medication I am t-taking.'' Matt handed her another sheet of paper and she arched her brows, reading them.

Finally she shove them back over the table and Matt looked at her. She just had to say give him a yes.

Half an hour later the car of Boden pulled back into the station and Hermann came running towards the car.

''Chief, the next time you should tell us when you are gone.''

''Guys, gather around!'' Boden yelled as Matt also got out of the car and Gabriela looked surprised and he gave her a mysterious smile. Hermann turned around and joined the other guys, annoyed Boden did not listen to him.

''Truck, you are getting a new fire fighter.''

The guys looked surprised while Boden pulled Matt closer and Matt gave Gabriela a short wink as she already seemed to have guess what Boden was going to say.

''Please welcome Casey back!'' The guys looked surprised at first as their jaws dropped as Casey walked towards them everybody shook his hand, hugged him, hit him on the shoulder and Hermann handed him the helmet with candidate, pulling it on his head. He also got his jacket handed and was carried inside the common room where they told the ones that were in the common room the news as well. Boden hit him on the shoulder as he walked back to his office.

''The next shift, Casey will be back and Hermann, keep that boy to sticking to orders.''

They all laughed and Hermann greeted him back as well.

''No more recklessness, okay? I would miss you if something happened to you again.'' Hermann said with a smile and Matt knew Hermann was happy he was glad and honestly, he was okay with Hermann being his superior. He had been here longer and Hermann has always been some sort of a father for him. A lot of things he knew were from his candidacy when Hermann had helped him out a lot, together with Severide.

Severide just smiled at him from the other side of the common room but finally approached, giving him a big friendly hug.

''I missed you here.'' Kelly whispered.

''I missed you too.'' Matt whispered too.

As the shift was almost over they went to Molly's a little later and they drank one on his return now their shift was over. Walking to the toilet Gabriela was waiting for him there. He knew he had to explain to her why he hadn't told her he was going to come back but he had been so worried they would say no in the end she would be disappointed too.

''Why didn't you tell me?''

''Are you mad?''

''Of course not. I am so happy for you.'' She kissed him on the mouth and tapped against the helmet on his head. He kissed her too.

''Thank you, I c-couldn't have done this without you.''

They hugged, realizing they had come a long way, but he had finally made it back.
