''I do n-not like this.'' Matt said as he sat down behind the wheel, ready to drive away to where ever Kelly was taking him.
''Why not, we are going to have fun!'' Severide said and Matt frowned.
''And that is probably going to end b-bad.''
''No, everything will go right and we will have a great time.'' Severide smirked as he took a bag of cheerio's out of the plastic bag by his feet and opened it; ''Make mistakes...then memories.'' He smiled and Matt smirked.
''Put t-that away though, I can't stand that smell in the car.'' Matt said and Severide wanted to give his friend a silly smile but realized he was not smiling...memories.
''I am sorry man, I didn't know that smell still reminds you of-''
''It's okay.'' Matt said then but Kelly told him to stop the car and got out, threw the chips away...sometimes he didn't realize Matt had different memories of Andy than him.
''Matt can we please stop at the next gas station?'' Andy said as laid over the backseat, eating chips and Severide looked back and at Matt.
''Ugh, please do. Darden farted again.'' Kelly said disgusted and Matt checked the signs for the next stop.
''I told you Cheerios made me gassy.''
''Well don't eat them.'' Kelly said as he laid his head against the window, knowing he shouldn't open it as they were on the highway.
They were on their way to Denver for a training with the fire department there and Matt had offered to carpool but he already regretted it at as Andy was messing up his car with his Cheerios and Kelly had already spilled a bottle of mountain dew. He had saved for this car for almost three years since he was sixteen and now he got it and the guys did manage to mess it up within moments.
He stopped at the gas station and waited in the car as the guys got out and he hoped so badly Severide had left his fake-id at home before beer would be flying through his car. His stomach turned around when he saw the guys leaving the gas station with a plastic bag because it meant they had bought something. Andy walked up to him with a guilty face.
''Kelly told me how careful you are with your car. I am sorry I messed your backseat up with my chips, Will clean your car when we are in Denver.'' He said as he handed Matt the bag and Matt looked inside.
''You shouldn't have, it's okay.'' Matt said as he saw the stash of CDs and knew they would have awesome new music from here to Denver.
''No more cheerio farts, I promise.'' Andy said then as he sat back down in the car.
''Can you text Gabby that we just passed the border with N-Nebraska and Iowa? Maybe she can figure out where are g-going.'' Matt said as they kept driving.
''Denver, we are sleeping in Denver.'' Kelly said but he still took Matt's phone.
''Don't worry, I can still text Gabby.''
''Give me my p-phone back.'' Matt said as he reached out and tried to snatch the phone from Kelly's hand but instead his head pulled the wheel a little off and the car swayed for second and Matt grabbed the wheel, quick before something could happen and Kelly looked backward as he heard the police siren.
''Shit.''
The police car caught up with them and Matt stopped the car and lowered the window as a cocky police officer leaned against his pick up and looked at him.
''Have you been drinking, sir?'' The police officer asked and Matt shook his head. ''No, I h-haven't.''
The policeman frowned and nodded at Matt. ''Get out of the vehicle, please.''
Matt got out, worried and Severide jumped out as well, worried they were mistaking his friend for a drunk. The office was commanding Matt to walk in a straight line and Matt did so, spreading his arms as he looked at the officer, annoyed.
''I haven't been d-drinking.'' Matt said and the police officer still didn't seem to the believe it.
''Sir, can you please take the PAS test.''
Right now, Severide was done with this and walked up to the officer.
''He is not doing any test.''
''Sir, get back in the vehicle.''
''He is not doing any test because he hasn't been drinking a sip of alcohol since he got in an accident doing his job as a firefighter about half a year ago and -''
''K-Kelly, it's okay.'' Matt tried to calm the situation before it could get out of hand.
''What's your badgenumber?'' Severide asked the officer mad, refusing to listen to Matt and the rookie looked up at him, scared and showed his badge.
''I am going to file a complaint against you, consider yourself warned.''
''But why...sir? Your friend might have been drinking.'' The policeman said and Kelly tried to keep himself from punching the man.
'''Because his speech is slurred because of a brain injury and yes, we were goofing around in the car and we know we shouldn't have swayed to the other lane. Still no way to treat a man like this without knowing what is going on!''
''Sorry.'' The rookie said as he was started to get red in his face as he looked at Matt.
''It's okay.'' Matt said as he was kind off embarrassed Severide had made such a scene.
''Can we go now?'' Severide asked angry. The officer nodded and he and Matt got back in the car. Upset Matt sat down in the passenger seat as Kelly insisted on driving now.
''Did you r-really have to make such a scene?'' Matt asked as he looked out of the window. It was not that he thought his friend wasn't right but he felt embarrassed. Honestly he would have prefered doing the test, getting an apology and a warning and continuing the road without making a scene and admitting he had a brain injury. He knew it was weak from him but he just didn't like people looking at him like that... with that pitiful look and suddenly embarrassed.
''I am sorry, I just don't like people being unfair to you like that.'' Severide said as he was worried Matt was mad at him for stepping up against the officer.
''It's okay...it's just...s-sometimes I don't want pity.'' Matt sighed but he smiled at Severide now.
''Thank you, though, for stepping up for me.''
''Always, you are my buddy for that.'' Severide said as he smiled and he was glad Matt had cheered up again as well. Matt nodded and he fell asleep in the chair, tired from the drive they had already made when he suddenly woke up as Severide hit the brakes pretty hard and he sat up, scared but realized they had just stopped at a motel and it was dark now.
''Are we not there yet?''
''Have some patience my friend, we can't make the drive in once so we will go on tomorrow.'' Severide said as he got out of the car and Matt followed him, carrying the bags.
''We need a room for tonight.''
''2 queen size beds or 1 california kind bed? I don't care.'' The woman behind the counter said grumpy and Matt tried not the chuckle.
''2 queen would be great.'' Severide said and he didn't dare to look at Matt. They walked out with the key and Kelly laid his hand on Matt's shoulder in a creepy way and Matt looked back, scared.
''California King would be great.'' Kelly said with a creepy voice and face and Matt slapped his hand away as they both started laughing. They went to their room and crashed, both on their own bed.
''So where are we going...not V-Vegas right?''
''Oh yeah, we are going to Vegas.'' Severide smirked and Matt turned around.
''For r-real?''
''For real.''
Matt started to laugh and nodded.
''So aw-wesome.''
''Yeah, I am sure the california king bed is going to be great fun.'' Kelly joked and Matt started laugh even harder.
''I wish Andy could be here t-too.'' Matt sighed then and Kelly nodded.
''Me too...me too.'' Kelly sighed sad.
Matt stood up and walked to the mini bar and grabbed two beers, throwing one to Kelly.
''To Andy. W-wish he could go with us.''
''To Andy, always with us on our mind though...''
NOTE: Oh Sevasey going to Vegas, what could possibly go wrong?
