Chapter 11: Big Problems
Edward's POV
"I don't like the way she answered at all" I said.
"I agree, she was very evasive when I asked her how much sugar she consumes" Carlisle said.
"She was also trying very hard to hide her thoughts" I said.
"I think we need to find out what she's hiding" Carlisle said.
"I agree, but how are we going to do that? She's not going to tell us willingly. That much is pretty clear" I said.
"How about you just follow her without her knowing. Her senses are still human she won't even know you're there" Bella said.
I looked at her and she smiled at me knowingly "You're a genius!" I said.
She just rolled her eyes. "It's a really easy solution to the problem. Honestly you men are so clueless sometimes" she said
"Be nice Bella" I said playfully.
"For some reason the problems with the most obvious solutions are the one's you need help with Edward" she said.
"and that is why I love you" I said.
"Oh please" she said.
"Okay, I say that we follow her around tomorrow starting in the morning. We'll go over there before she eats breakfast and we'll start there" I said.
"I think that's a great plan" Carlisle said
"I'm coming with you two" Bella said.
"The sooner we find out the better. Blood naturally smells and tastes very sweet to a vampire and to a hybrid. If the vampire had a strong sweet tooth in his or her human life than that would make it extremely hard to resist the smell of blood. If a hybrid, such as Nessie, has a strong sweet tooth then he or she would also have that same problem of resisting sweet smelling blood" Carlisle said.
"If she does have a strong craving for sugar than what are we going to do?" asked Bella.
"It depends how much she is actually eating. If she is consuming a lot then we would have to restrict her somehow. Keep in mind that eating a high amount of sugar is also bad for your health. Nessie's evasiveness gives me the impression that she's doing something that's not good" Carlisle said.
"Do you still have her blood sample?" I asked.
"Yes. I even have the blood she donated to the hospital. Why?" he asked.
"You can use the blood that she donated to test her sugar levels. That way we can get an idea about what we are dealing with" I said.
His face lit up like a child on Christmas morning "That's a great idea. I should have thought of that" he said.
"How long will that take?" asked Bella
"Not to long. Just a few hours at most" Carlisle said.
Carlisle went up to his study after that and began to work on Nessie's blood.
I just sat there waiting for a long time. I was worried about what Carlisle would find. I was worried about my daughter. I wanted her to be healthy and I didn't want her to have a problem with thirst control.
A couple of hours later Carlisle came back with a grave look on his face.
"I don't like this. I don't like this at all" he said.
"What's wrong?" I asked sounding like a very worried dad.
"Her sugar levels are extremely high. Honestly most doctors would consider her diabetic with these levels" he said.
"She has diabetes?!" Bella screamed. I immediately went and held her to calm her down even though I felt the same way. I felt her relax in my arms before Carlisle continued.
"No she's not diabetic. That's what confuses me. I also tested for diabetes a few times but it keeps coming up negative" he said.
"Maybe it's something that witch did to her. She left her with a little bit of extra strength, speed, and she left her a little smarter. What if she also left her with a little bit of extra good health?" I said.
"That's the theory that I came up with. I think the witch might have left her with more health than a normal human would have. However, good health can only last so long when you don't take care of yourself. I fear that if Nessie keeps up whatever bad habits she has then it won't end well" he said.
"Why on Earth do her parents allow this?! They own a hospital they should know that whatever she's doing is not good!" I roared.
"I don't know. Some parents just let their kids do whatever they want" Carlisle said. "all I know is that her health and thirst control are at stake here" he said.
"Then we must do something about it" Bella said
"I agree" I said.
"We'll follow her tomorrow and then figure out our next line of action" Carlisle said.
"Okay" Bella and I said at the same time.
The very next morning we were at Nessie's house at the crack of dawn. All three of us watched her sleep peacefully through her bedroom window. Finally after everyone else had left she woke up. As soon as we saw her heading downstairs we went down there as well. We watched her through the kitchen window.
We all stared at each other shocked and speechless when she opened her cabinet. It was filled with just about every sugary item you can imagine.
"Oh my god. This would explain her extremely high sugar levels" Carlisle said with disbelief in his voice.
"She's saying in her mind that it's all hers" I said.
"That's incredible" Bella said.
We watched as she made chocolate pancakes and then got a bottle of Strawberry Nesquik milk.
Carlisle just continued to stare at her in shock and disbelief. "Do you know how much sugar is in that breakfast? A lot! I always advise my patients never to drink Nesquik because of the sugar content and my own granddaughter is drinking it! And now she's going for another one!" he said in disbelief when she got a second bottle from her fridge.
"She's going to the mall now" I said once she was finished.
"I can't believe that after all that she is still packing Oreo cookies" Bella said.
"I think she has a problem with sugar and it needs to be taken care of immediately" Carlisle said.
"Let's just follow her. We need to understand the depth of her problem" I said.
With that we followed her to the mall. We continued to watch her. She did eat the Oreos and she also bought other snacks. The final straw came when she went and bought two boxes of See's Candies.
"What are we going to do?" I asked.
"The best thing for her is to stop eating sugar. This isn't good" he said.
"I agree" I said.
"It's for her own good" Bella agreed.
We decided to approach her right here, right now.
She nearly choked on the candy when Carlisle said "Nessie"
"Um hi" she said.
"Nessie, give me the candy" he said.
"Excuse me" she said
"We've been watching you all day and the amount of sugar you consume is unhealthy. In order to gain better control of your thirst we need to curb your sugar consuming habits. We talked and decided that the best thing would be if you stopped eating sugar altogether" he said.
"Wait, what?" she asked
"Nessie, just give Carlisle the candy. It's for your own good" Bella said.
Renesmee couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Is this really necessary?" she asked. If only she knew!
"Yes, now give me the candy" Carlisle said.
She reluctantly gave up the boxes.
"Nessie, hand me your wallet" I said when she made plans to buy more boxes with a rewards card
I went through her wallet and got all her rewards cards and coupons and tore them up into millions of little pieces
"Don't even think about it Nessie!" I said when she came up with plans to order replacements.
We went back to her house and went through the whole house and got every sugary food and threw it out.
Renesmee's POV
"What?!" I roared angrily when someone knocked on my door. I was on day two of the no sugar diet and I was becoming extremely irritable as a result.
The door opened revealing my brother Tyler "Sheesh! What's wrong with you?" he asked
"I'm sorry I'm just extremely irritable lately" I said.
"Well, I just came in to borrow your laptop. Is that okay? Mine's broken and it needs to be fixed" he said.
"Sure, go ahead. Just don't break mine" I said bitterly. I was in a really bad mood
"Sure thing Vanessa" he said and left.
What was wrong with me? I was extremely irritable. I haven't slept well these past two nights. I keep getting these shakes and chills, and I keep pinching and scratching myself. I feel like an addict recovering from a drug addiction. Wait! That's the problem! I was a sugar addict and now that I've stopped I'm experiencing the same symptoms a drug addict would feel when going through withdrawal. I smiled at my little epiphany. That means that these symptoms will run their course and I will come out stronger. I only hoped my family and my boyfriend wouldn't hate me at the end of it. I've snapped at everyone these past few days.
Speaking of the devil my boyfriend is calling.
"Hi Ryan" I said as cheerfully as possible.
"Hi Nessie. How are you feeling?" he asked.
"I'm doing okay"' I lied. "I'm sorry about snapping at you yesterday" I said.
"It's okay, you've apologized a million times, you're forgiven" he said.
"I have?" I asked
"Yes you have. If you want to make it up to me than allow me to take you out to dinner on Friday" he said.
I couldn't help but smile. He was just too cute sometimes.
"I would love that very much thank you" I said.
"Okay, how does six o clock sound?" he asked.
"It sounds good to me" I said
"Then it's a date" he said.
The next few days dragged by at a sluggish pace. The symptoms of withdrawal raged inside of me and I wondered, will it ever end? My behavior continually baffled my human family. Meanwhile my vampire family kept an eye on me. Every time I attempted to stray from diet they were on me like fleas on a dog.
I woke up on Friday morning feeling strange. I looked in the mirror and nearly had a heart attack when I saw myself. I was pale. I wasn't nearly as pale as a vampire but my skin had indeed lost some of it's color. There was also a ring of red around my eyes. A human wouldn't be able to notice but anyone else would. My heart nearly tripled in speed. I was changeing.
"Are you feeling okay?" mom asked as soon as she saw me. "You look pale"
"I'm fine mom" I lied
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yes" I said.
"Okay" she said.
Today was a sunny day so I didn't have to worry about the Cullens noticing my changes. I just went through the day in a daze. I hardly paid attention to my classes as I thought about what was happening to me.
Soon enough the day was over and it was time for me to go home and get ready for my date
It precisely 6 I heard the door bell ring. There he was with a bouquet of roses
"Awww! Thanks Ryan!" I said.
"Anything for my girl" he said before kissing me on the cheek
"Would you like to come in for a minute?" I asked.
"I would love to" he said.
"Thanks. I'm almost ready" I said.
As I finished up my makeup I heard the sound of breaking glass in the living room. I went into the living room and saw that my mom had accidentally knocked over our vase.
What happened next was a blur. My brother walked in barefoot without even noticing the mess. He stepped on the glass and the scent of his fresh blood was too much to bare. His scent was much stronger than the bloodbags I had at the hospital. Without a second thought I lunged at him. My teeth latched onto his bleeding wound. I was vaguely aware if the screaming. I was vaguely aware of people trying to pull me off of him. I was only aware of one thing; the taste of fresh blood. I was like a shark in a feeding frenzy.
I felt someone try to yank me off. I sent that person flying across the room and info the couch. I continued to hiss and growl. It was only when I saw the fear in my parent's and brother's faces that I realized what I was doing. My boyfriend was the one I had sent flying across the room.
Everyone looked at me like the monster I truly was. I looked at my brother who looked at me with nothing but terror.
In a moment of panic I fled the scene. I happened to catch a glance of my reflection and I saw the blood around my lips, chin, and on my shirt. I truly was a monster.
Without a second thought I got on my bike and left. I didn't know where I was going. But I just needed to get out of here.
I didn't pay attention to where I was going. Not a good thing at night but I didn't care. I was crossing a bridge when I saw my entire vampire family in their cars. They looked at me in shock and horror. I forced myself to look away. Without realizing it I had swerved right in front of another car. The car crashed right into me and I flipped over the entire car. Another car hit me from behind causing me to fall off the bridge and to plummet into the frigid waters below me. The pain, it was overbearing. Blackness threatened to overtake me if I didn't get to the surface soon.
Then I realized with horror that I could no longer feel my legs. Nor could I move them either. I had only my arms to propel me to the surface. I could feel myself losing consciousness as I fought against the water. As soon as I reached the surface the blackness won just as the current carried me further and further away from shore.
