Chapter 14: More Changes

I stayed in the hospital a few more days but showed no sign of improving any time soon. They finally decided to just let me go home. The sight of the wheelchair reminded me of the horrid situation I was in, not that I'd needed reminding of course. Tyler, being the extra caring brother that he is, insisted on pushing my chair to his car.

I was still so surprised by how well my family was taking this. Didn't it bother them that I'm a half vampire freak that's lied to them for so many years? Weren't they in the least bit disturbed that their extended family were all blood sucking vampires? Even my boyfriend was taking this is extremely well.

"What are you thinking about Nessie? You look really deep in thought" Tyler said.

"I'm just, well, surprised that's all" I said.

"By what?" he asked. He seemed frustrated that I wasn't elaborating any further.

"By how well everyone is taking this. How can you all just so easily accept me now that you know the truth about me. Especially you Tyler! How are you not repulsed by me? I almost killed you the other day" I whispered that last part so only he could hear it.

"I don't care about that. You're my little sister and I love you no matter what. I'm sorry kiddo but getting rid of me isn't going to be that easy. Besides it's my fault that you're in this damned wheelchair in the first place" he said.

"What?!" I shouted. How dare he blame himself for my current situation!

"If I hadn't so stupidly stepped on broken glass in the first place then you wouldn't need a wheelchair right now" he said. He sounded like he felt very guilty. Why? It was my fault, I shouldn't have attacked him like that. I should have had better control of myself.

"Stop" I said to him. He listened. "Now stand right in front of me" I commanded. His bewildered expression was amusing.

To my surprise I was able to run over his foot with one of my wheels easily.

"Ouch, what the hell was that for?!" he shouted.

"For being stupid!" I shouted. "It is not your fault what happened! It's my fault! It's because of what I am that I'm a danger to people. I should have been stronger!" I said.

"But-"

"No buts! Just shut up before you say something else stupid and make me feel compelled to run you over again" I said.

"Okay okay, sheesh! Note to self never anger a half vampire" he said.

"That's a lesson you will do well not to forget" I said.

He resumed pushing me to his car where he then helped me into the car.

"Where are mom and dad by the way?" I asked. I hadn't seen them all morning.

"They had to work. They tried to get away but they couldn't so I volunteered to come for you. It's just you and me all day" he said.

"Thanks Tyler" I said.

He smiled at me "You're my little sister. It's my job to protect you and look out for you" he said.

"Considering what I am shouldn't I be the one protecting you? Besides I'm 17, and you're 18, that's not that much younger than you" I said.

He laughed "Really? Because last time I checked you were a 12 year old pretending to be a 17 year old. If you were completely human you'd be preparing to graduate middle school instead of high school right now baby sis" he laughed before reaching over and ruffling my hair.

"Don't make me slap you because I'm not afraid to go there" I said.

"Okay sister" he said. "But I'm still going to be overprotective no matter what you are. Remember when you brought Ryan home for the first time?" he asked.

Oh boy did I ever.

"How can I forget? You scared him half to death! You're were worse than dad" I said.

"I just wanted to make sure that he'd never hurt you. I'm going have to do the same thing with Jacob because I have a feeling he really likes you and he's going to fight for you" he said.

"What makes you say that?" I asked. I knew the imprint meant that we were a perfect match for each other. I know how the imprint works so I knew there was a possibility of this. I just didn't expect that it would happen so soon. I had to admit that I kind of wanted Jacob to fight for me. I felt something there, something that was more than friendship, but Ryan was my boyfriend. I was so sure of Ryan, that he could be the one for me. I had strong feelings for him before, but now that Jacob is in my life again I'm not so sure of my feelings anymore.

"That kid is crazy jealous for you that's why" Tyler said interrupting my train of thoughts. "He may not say anything but I can tell. He doesn't like when your with Ryan. He gets so upset that he starts trembling badly. Looks like he's fighting convulsions. Haven't you noticed?" he asked.

"No" I answered.

"And you women say us guys are clueless. Trust me, I think you're about to get caught up in one of those love triangles that typically only happen in stories" he said.

Oh boy, I couldn't deny the truth of what he was saying. I had two guys, one boyfriend, and one imprinter in my life. That's just asking for trouble. But what could I do?

Over the next few days I began to notice more changes in my body and that scared me. This changing from human to vampire was strange. My skin was quickly losing color. If I didn't know any better I'd believe that I had an illness. My eyes also started to change color. The gold rings around the center that had started developing a few weeks ago was now completely visible to everyone. That gold would change to black when I was hungry, almost like a vampire. I could also feel my heart rate beginning to slow down. It was all very disorienting and confusing.

"I think you should see Carlisle" my mom said Friday morning at breakfast.

"Why? He already knows what's going on" I said.

"Because last time he saw you a week ago you looked human and now you look close to one of them. He's going to want to check you out and it will put us all at ease" mom said. "Besides he called yesterday and he wants to check up on you're back" she added.

"Alright mom, whenever someone can drive me I'll go see him" I said.

"Okay Tyler will take you later" she said.

"Wait what?!" My brother shouted, spitting bits of pancake and sausage on me at the same time. Gross.

"You are taking your sister to Dr. Cullen later" mom said.

"But I have a date later" he said.

Mom and I stared at him in shock. This was news to us. He had just had a bad breakup with his girlfriend a month ago.

"You have a date! And you didn't tell me! With who?!" I shouted.

"Her name is Leah Clearwater. We met in town two weeks ago and we've been seeing each other ever since" he said." The moment we first made eye contact it was like seeing the sun for the first time. She even kneeled. It was kind of weird.

Oh my goodness, Leah Clearwater found her soulmate in my brother.

"Well you'll just have to take your sister to Dr. Cullen before you're date then" mom said.

Throughout the day I just sat around and did a lot of nothing until Tyler came for me and took me to grandpa.

Carlisle was very shocked indeed. But he said that it was more than likely that I would regain the use of my legs soon.

The visit was over pretty fast. When I got back home Ryan was waiting for me on the porch with a bouquet of roses.

Tyler left us alone after that.

We just talked for a long time. I could tell that he was nervous about something.

"Nessie I need to tell you something" he said.

"Okay what is it?" I asked.

"I'm in love with you Nessie" he said. Then he kissed me but I didn't kiss him back.

"Nessie" I jumped at the sound of Jacob's heartbroken voice. Jacob looked really upset. He was shaking really badly now. He couldn't control it any longer before he exploded into his wolf self. He went straight towards Ryan like he was about to attack him. Then he changed his mind at the last second and ran in the opposite direction.

The sound of his heartbroken howl in the distance tore me up on the inside.
