Chapter 17: News
Renesmee's POV
After the incident involving me running off and looking for Jacob, things pretty much went back to normal for me. Of course, with the one exception of my punishment. Three months of being grounded seemed more like three years at the pace it was going by. I really shouldn't complain though, not too much anyway. After all I'm the one who disappeared all night just to look for Jacob.
The first few weeks had been pretty bad because Carlisle had been right about the pneumonia. Thanks to my grandfather's early treatment I didn't get that bad anyway.
It wasn't too bad either because Jacob made sure to visit me every day while I was being punished. My punishment meant that I could not go out with anybody, no friends, no Jacob, no boyfriend. Speaking of which he's been over a few times. Things have kind of been awkward since the day he professed his love for me, and then me leaving him just moments later to look for Jacob. I had a feeling that he was going to be just as stubborn about winning me over as Jacob was. I was still confused about what I should do. I'm still confused about my feelings, although I think there may be a part of me that wants Jacob more. I couldn't be be sure though.
Meanwhile everyone continued to monitor my progress. Nothing was really changing though. I still remained confined to my wheelchair, despite Carlisle's insistence that I would regain movement anytime now. To say the very least, it was frustrating. When?! When?! Was the question that I kept wanting to scream out.
I was doing my homework when I just happened to glance at the calendar. I smiled, it was only two more weeks until my grounding would officially be over. I went back to my Calculus homework with that happy thought.
"Nessie!" I heard my mom scream. I growled. I had just finally begun to figure out a particularly complicated problem and now thanks to my mom's distraction I completely lost my train of thought. Wait a second, I just growled! This wasn't just any growl, but a ferocious provoked vampire like growl. That had not happened before. I have growled before, but this is the most vicious beast like sound that has ever passed my lips.
"Nessie!" mom shouted again.
I groaned and then shut my book. It looks like Calculus will just have to wait.
"Yes mom?" I said once I found her in the kitchen. The smell of the chocolate chip cookies she was baking was overwhelming. My stomach gave me away by letting out a loud growl. I blushed with embarrassment. My mom just laughed.
"It's hard to believe that I once hated food" I said as I thought back to my first months when the only thing I would allow to pass my lips was blood. I was even reluctant to try animal blood until Jacob started to make a game out of hunting, but now I love it! Carlisle had recently decided it would be a good idea to add blood to my diet because he thought it would help me recover faster.
"You actually hated food?" My mother was clearly shocked
"Yup, believe it or not there was once a time when I would stubbornly refuse to eat any food" I said.
"That's hard to believe. Especially since you love sweets so much. Although you seem to have cut back drastically in the last few months" she said.
I groaned and then rolled my eyes. I still wasn't very happy with this new almost sugar free diet that Carlisle created just for me.
"It was all Carlisle's and Edward's idea. They think I 'ate to much sugar'" I used my fingers to add quotation marks which caused her to laugh.
"You did eat a lot of sugar" mom said
"So why exactly did you call me?" I asked just to change the subject.
"I just wanted to tell you that your father and I decided to unground you a little early. We're letting you off for good behavior. You're amazingly non whiney for a teenager" she said.
I could not believe my ears. I was off the hook!
"Yayyy! Thank you mom!" I shouted. I went over to her and gave her a big hug and kiss.
"I'm going to go call Jacob and tell him the good news!" I shouted.
In just a few minutes I had my cellphone in my hand and I was calling his number.
"Hi Nessie" he said happily. He always sounded happy.
"Hi Jake. Guess what? I'm not grounded anymore" I said happily.
"Really? That's awesome! Want to go out later to celebrate?" he asked.
"Of course I do Jacob" I said.
"Okay, I'll be over at 8, if that's okay with you" he said.
"8 sounds great to me" I said.
"okay see you then" he said.
"Okay" then the line went dead.
I was so happy right now that I could just scream. But I didn't, I might've given everyone in this house a heart attack if I had.
I looked at my homework and sighed. You know what? Screw Calculus! It was Friday, I still had the whole weekend to do it.
I went outside and heard the dribble of a basketball. As it turned out my brother was shooting hoops in our driveway. I watched him for a while. He lacked something to be desired, the ability to get the ball in the hoop. He missed almost every shot.
"Tyler I share a bathroom with you so I know you have difficulty when it comes to aiming, but this is ridiculous" I smirked
He spun around, he hadn't even noticed there.
"How long have you been there?" he asked.
"Long enough to know that I would kick your butt in basketball" I said.
"Yeah right. By the way I have perfect aim in the bathroom" he said.
I laughed "tell that to the bathroom floor and the toilet seat"
"That's it you're going to get it now" he started chasing me around the yard until he grabbed ahold of me.
"Okay, I give up! I give up!" I shouted when he startled tickling me.
"and?" he asked.
"I take it all back" I said through gasps of breath.
"good" was all he said. He smiled triumphantly.
Somehow I snatched the ball from him and shot the ball. It landed perfectly in the hoop.
My brother chased after the ball. He looked at me in shock.
"How'd you do that?" he asked.
"Practice" I said.
"Okay, well I'm going in now. I invited Leah over to meet everyone so I have to go get ready" he said.
"Good for you. I hope mom and dad like her" I said.
"Yeah me too" he said before going inside. I looked at the ball Tyler had handed me and then shot it. It bounced of the side of the board and headed straight for my neighbor's lawn across the street.
I sighed, I guess I was going to have to get it myself. Suddenly I felt a weird tingling sensation in my legs. That hadn't happened before. Curiously I attempted to move them, and to my surprise I could move. I could actually move.
Oh my god! I could move! I wheeled myself over to the wall. I wanted to see if I could stand. By using the wall for support I was able to stand. Slowly I was able to walk. I cautiously let go of the wall and began to make my way across the street to get the ball. I was moving slowly, but I was definitely moving.
I heard a car coming and the tires came to a screeching halt close by. My legs began to shake before they gave way beneath me.
Cold arms caught me just in time. "Nessie" it was Carlisle's voice. "You were walking"
"I know, I was finally walking" I said.
He hugged me closer to him, I could feel the excitement and happiness rolling off of him.
"Why'd I fall though?" I asked.
"You were pushing yourself too much. Baby steps Nessie, you're still not completely healed yet" he said. He lifted me with ease.
"Can you please get my ball for me?" I asked. He didn't hesitate. We went inside and told everyone the good news. The happiness was indescribable. It felt like my family was hugging me to death.
"I can't wait to tell your parents Nessie. They'll be so happy" Carlisle said.
"I bet they will be" I smiled.
"Nessie, this came for you in the mail today" mom handed me a letter.
Curiously, I took the letter and went to my room. Who would send me a letter?
I tore it open.
Dear Renesmee,
It seems that you have been faking your death for the past 12 years to avoid me. I promise that you will not escape twice. I will come after you and the witch who helped you fool us. You have been warned.
Sincerly, Aro
I felt the blood drain from my face, and then I fainted.
