The Lucky One

One week had passed and nothing ever so interesting had happened in that small town, except that the strange woman in combat attire had been the topic for whole three days. Well, that's how long it took for even the little kids to know her. They didn't know her name so far but only because Frost had kept his word. They all knew now that she worked for Korsak and Sons because he was the handy man you called when something was off, stuck or damaged. He did everything from hardwood floor to messy toilets, changing light switches to tiling a roof. Or he'd had done. Now his eldest son did all the muscle work for him when he did the things he was physically able to. Due to his bad leg it wasn't very much anymore, but he did drive out every single time to watch his son.

And now there was Jane Rizzoli. A former Marine trained in hand to hand combat and weapon-handling. She had been a godsend. Not only was she good at what she had been trained to do but her skills with plumbing were exceptional. His son was glad that they had gotten the so much needed help but was still cautious around the raven haired woman. When his father had introduced him to her he just couldn't help but stare at her marked face until his father had not so kindly smacked his cane into his sons butt. They knew nothing about her and most times except for work and dinner she had kept to herself for now. Vince knew how to handle those kind of persons very well from his time with the marines and he accepted her being a private person. Both Vince and his son Josh didn't know anything about her time overseas and what had happened to her except for the obvious. The long scar along her face. She always wore the long sleeves the nurses at the medical center had given her. It was a kind gesture. Vince never asked why she wore long sleeves when she obviously was sweating with the exertion of her work.

It was a Thursday morning and the sun was shining through the slight cloudy sky when the next costumer called.

"Korsak and Sons." Josh greeted the person on the other line sipping o his second cup of coffee. He nodded hummed and fumbled between his father's messy paperwork until he had found a pen.

"Yes Mrs. Sinclair. We'll be over as soon as possible." He nodded once again. "Yes I understand." With a sigh he placed the old phone back on the handle and grabbed the piece of paper. He left the shop to go back into the house to get Jane. Mrs. Sinclair's toilet was leaking and now her bathroom floor was slightly overflown. It usually wouldn't be so urgent if the costumer wasn't an 86 year old widow. He got up the stairs and went straight to Jane's room.

"Jane?" he knocked and waited for a response.

From downstairs he could hear his father cursing and yelling at nothing In particular. Josh just shook his head and sighed. Ever since his father had taken in Jane he had changed, like he had been thrown back in this hell hole of a war he had been forced to participate in all those years ago. He turned back to the door and knocked again.

"Jane get up, there's work waitin'."

Nothing. He thought about knocking again when he heard a thud and then a curse. Not thinking twice he opened the door to look what had happened when he was met with a half-naked Jane laying sprawled in front of the bed tangled in her sheets. It wasn't the woman as such lying on the floor mumbling under her breath but the missing left leg and the scars that were now visible on her arm that let his eyes grew wide.

When Jane looked up seeing him staring at her in shock she quickly sobered up and covered as much of herself as possible with the thin linen sheet.

"Get the fuck out." Jane yelled, fear etched all over her face. He uttered a quick sorry and closed the door behind him. On his way downstairs he could still hear her cursing. What the hell just happened he thought and took his now could coffee from the counter.

He was startled by his father's rumbling around in the backyard when he turned around and was greeted by his red faced father. "Where the hell did you put the…" Vince started but the odd expression on his sons face let him go silent. He cocked his head and frowned.

"What's up?" he asked Josh and stepped closer to him. Josh blinked twice shook his head and met his father's gaze.

"What exactly do you know about Jane?" he asked taking a sip of the cold brown liquid. Vince switched his cane from left hand to his right and walked over to the kitchen table.

"What do you mean son?" Vince asked as he slowly sat down.

"Did she tell you what has happened to her? I mean look at her face. Something must have happened, doesn't it?" Josh asked and placed his mug down to make his father another cup of coffee. He considered making Jane one too but now wasn't sure how long it would take her to come down. Vince took the mug from his son and took a slowly sip.

"Well I know she was a Marine and from the scar on her face she has been through something over there but other than that…. No, I know nothing but I didn't pry… You know it's not nice to pry Josh, right?" His son nodded.

"I didn't ask her though but… Dad her left leg's missin'"

When Vince was about to reply to this new information when they were interrupted by a person coughing from the doorway. Both men flinched startled by the sudden noise. Josh turned beet red, looking so deep into his mug clutched in his hands you could think he wanted to vanish in it. Vince took a sip of coffee and turned around in his chair.

"So you lost a leg…." He simply stated and looked down to the now trouser covered prostheses he knew was beneath it. Jane blinked several times surprised by his bluntness but said nothing.

"Shit happens kid." He said and grabbed down the hem of his trouser leg and revealed a scar mangled angry red lower leg. "Sometimes I wish they had cut of that son of a bitch. There isn't a day it doesn't hurt." He let the trouser leg slide down to cover his ankle again. Jane just starred at the now covered leg and gulped audibly. That's how her leg would have looked now if she still had it. But at least it would be hers and not some piece of plastic and metal.

"Had shrapnel everywhere up to here." He pointed at his hip. Josh meanwhile had gotten up and collected the needed tools for the job they had been called in for.

"Collapsed building." Jane simply said grabbed her mug from the counter and sat across Vince on the small kitchen table. Nervously she picked at her nails and looked exactly like Josh into the mug. She was startled when a big rough handy covered hers to get her attention.

"It's okay Jane, you don't need to worry about your work with us." He said now his voice a tune softer than usually. He knew exactly where her mind had gone to. That was the reason why he had opened his own hardware shop. To be able to earn money without the risk of losing a job because of disability.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you Sir, but…" Jane started but Vince waved her off and chuckled.

"It's none of my business and what have I told you about the Sir?" he narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. Jane played nervously with the mug in her hands.

"Sorry Sir… uhm Vince. I'm just a very private person…" Jane started making eye contact.

"And that is okay. It's none of our business unless it involves your work with us but you seem not to be impaired by your prosthesis… I've seen it myself so…. "He scratched his stubbles. "no worries. Oh and Josh mentioned you have a plumbing job to do."

With that he grabbed his cane and got up. Jane ever the Marine also stood up as he had outranked her in active times. Old habits die hard Jane thought as she watched him leave for the shop. When she took the last sip of her coffee she was again startled by presumably Josh clearing his throat.

"Uhmm…. I… " he muttered not being able to make eye contact as Jane turned around to him. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry I uhm saw…. " He gestured to her leg. Jane smiled a small smile and nodded. She placed her now empty mug on the counter and headed towards the truck.

"Just don't mention it again." She said in a playfully threatening voice as she passed him on her way out. Josh shuddered but smiled as he followed Jane to the car. They would be okay.
