Chapter 8
L observed the tape recording of the interview they had with Li. From Li's body actions, it was clear that he knew all the tricks that officers could observe to tell if the suspect was telling a lie or telling the truth. Of course it wasn't perfect and there have been times when the body language given off was something natural they did while being interviewed so they couldn't just rely on body language alone. L needed to catch him out on something else. Interviews were probably something he was used to, Li acted all professional...like he was being interviewed for a job. That was his aura and that was putting L off slightly. Not even Light was perfect at interviews; but Li seemed perfect for interviews. No one should be perfect for interviews, not even people who have had the most experience in interviews are so confident like Li was. There has to be something else L could do to catch out Li. He was certain that there was something different about Li, but unlike Light, he couldn't say he knew. There was a piece of the puzzle missing and Li had it, he wasn't going to hand it over without a fight. L stared deeply at the video screen; he had muted the tape a while ago and just left it on repeat.
Light placed himself down next to L and watched the video. A cup of coffee was held firmly in his grip. His eyes watched the screen too. Taking a sip of coffee and L turned to face Light. He was still sitting next to Kira, but his mind seemed to block out any thought that Kira would have. L hated waiting for two people to hide their true colours around him. He would have much rather have had them out in the open so he could catch them both, deliver them to justice and move on. With Light he knew, with Li...There were still questions. Yes, it does seem impossible that Li could be the masked figure who can control electricity by giving off synchrotron radiation but then again, with what science could do today...Li could easily have created a different personality after escaping from a lab, if he was an experiment like it sounded to be. This case was too complicated due to how many variables and supernatural it was.
"Ryuzaki, is there something wrong?" Light asked, being unable to take L's emotionless eyes stare at him for the past five minutes. L tore his eyes off Kira and looked back at the screen.
"Yes. Yes, there is something wrong. It is the fact that this case isn't going to be as fun as I hoped it would be. I already know who the two Kiras are but when it comes to the masked man and who or what he is, I don't have the slightest clue. There's a piece missing and Li's holding it," L simply said. There wasn't any point holding back his thoughts. Li was involved with the masked man but he wasn't sure how. No one knew what the masked man was. He couldn't be fully human, but then again...could he be a Shinigami who doesn't follow the rules they have set in place? Do they even have rules to begin with?
"I'm not Kira, but at the moment; Kira isn't a threat. The bigger threat is the masked man who's only been fighting in the shadows. He doesn't want people to know about him, that's how he's been fighting. In the shadows," Light pointed out. L's eyes widened slightly.
"Yes of course, wearing full black helps disguise into the shadows but then why wear a white mask?"
"It's possible that others will perceive it as a figment of their imagination and ignore it. They'll continue on feeling slightly disturbed, when they look back, he'll be gone and the person will continue on their way. Without questioning it or coming to the police," Light suggested before taking another sip of coffee.
"Did you have my cake?" L asked Light in the serious tone of voice.
"No!"
The Death Spark – Chapter 8
Hei sat in the isolation room. Ryuzaki and Light had left him alone while the analysed the tape that was recorded. Hei already knew that they were watching it or analysing the video in order to see if they could catch him out. He couldn't even let his eyes darken when he was full contractor. This at last allowed his mind to wander what Misaki or his team were possibly doing. He could already imagine Huang getting his head bitten off by the Syndicate based on the fact that he wasn't there anymore. His thoughts turned to his other two friends...Mao and Yin. What were they doing while Huang was getting his head chewed on? That was before his thoughts returned to the other contractor who had followed him into this world. How did she get there in the first place? She already knew what he looked like as the Black Reaper, which was something to be expected. Every company wanted him gone. On their side or locked up away. Many companies live in fear that if they do anything, the Black Reaper was going to come and kill them all.
"Excuse me...Err...how long do I have to stay here? I really should be getting back to work," Hei asked in his softer voice. Hei didn't have to wait long before a response came back.
"Are you currently paying rent for an apartment?" A distorted, heavily filtered voice came through the speakers and into the room.
"Yes, I pay rent. If you just let me work so I can pay the rent, I promise to return here instead of my apartment until you're clear, Ryuzaki."
"If we do that, you will be handcuffed to another member of the police so that they can keep an eye on you. While you're working, the handcuff will be removed and the member of the police will be stationed inside so they can watch you. Is that a deal?" Hei knew that there was going to be a catch, police always did that.
"Will I be allowed to walk freely while still being handcuffed to your police member?" Hei smiled on the inside, feeling that he was going to be rejected grew the more that time passed.
"That is a possibility. If you behave, I might consider loosening the leash."
"Then I'll make that deal with you," Hei said, keeping his neutral expression on his face. He knew that the cameras were still being watched and so couldn't change much of how he was now or Ryuzaki was going to get suspicious.
"Good, I'll be sending in your new guardian so that you can go back to work while still being watched."
The Death Spark – Chapter 8
Light couldn't help but watch Li on the cameras. Ryuzaki was too busy trying to think of the most suitable person who could watch him without getting too comfortable around him and kept the task on hand in their mind. They were to watch Li, not become his best friend and get too chummy with him while forgetting the real reason why they were with him. Light only knew one man suitable for the job...his father. Mr. Yagami wasn't one to lose focus on the job and will remain loyal to the job until the very end. Light gave his worker a good poke on the shoulder.
"Yes Light?" Ryuzaki asked.
"What if we send my dad there? Out of everyone here...Dad seems to fit the position the best," Light questioned Ryuzaki. He could tell that Ryuzaki was taking it into consideration but then at the same time, it would be best if he stayed on the Kira case too. Light had planned a little test for Ryuzaki, and that was going to be what case mattered more to him. The Kira case or is it the new case which involves Li?
"Yes, your father would make the best sort of person to handle a mission like this..." Ryuzaki started as he turned off the screen in front of him and Light. "As much as I would like to put him on this new case, I'd rather have him on Kira's case...best not to lose a valuable officer like your father. I'd rather put someone else on his case."
"Well, it'll be better to ask him, right?"
L looked back at Light once more. "Collecting more and more ideas can take you further away from the plan you have originally."
The door opened, making a creaking noise which was swiftly followed by footsteps. Light and Ryuzaki turned around to see who had entered the room, Light smiled seeing his father standing there. The simple sight of his father gave him the smallest spark of hope that Ryuzaki was going to change his plans based on Mr. Yagami's decision. The look through his glasses near enough explained it all to the two younger males that he had overheard the conversation that they had. From everything they had gathered, Li wasn't a potential threat to them and didn't need to be kept under lock and key. Like they had experienced with Light and Misa, it wasn't going to be easy to change Ryuzaki's mind and this was just another time that they had to put up with the insomniac detective.
"I'll do my duty to watch over Mr. Shengshun," Mr. Yagami told Ryuzaki.
"If that is your decision then you're happy to be taken off the Kira case?" Ryuzaki asked.
"I know that my son's innocence will shine though and you'll admit that you miscalculated over this issue." Ryuzaki looked back at Light, Light knew what was going through Ryuzaki's mind and it wasn't something he was going to look forward to.
"If that's what you've agreed on. Then please feel free to grab a pair of handcuffs and then to talk to Li. He might be dying to use the rest room by now."
"You'll be fine Dad," Light gave his father an encouraging smile. His father simply nodded and went to meet up with Li in the holding cell. Li didn't seem like a bad kid. How could he be the masked man who took down a bunch of police? Li was more likely to be just in the wrong place at the wrong time. There wasn't any reason why Li would turn to crime. When they had hung out, it didn't feel like he was capable of murder of any sort.
"Thank you, Light."
"You are to keep a very close eye on Mr. Shengshun. If he makes any move, then you're allowed to shoot him to bring him back here," Ryuzaki told him. Mr. Yagami nodded as he turned to leave. Light watched his father leave before turning back to Ryuzaki.
"Be careful with this Ryuzaki."
The Death Spark – Chapter 8
Mr. Yagami could easily tell that Li was a smart individual, not to the same level of Light and Ryuzaki but he was above the average level. Li understood what he had told him and understood the whole situation with retaining the same childish innocence after leaving Ryuzaki's holding cell and the police station. Li could easily befriend anyone which was going to be his crucial flaw; he could easily befriend the masked man without even knowing, same with Kira. Misa had explained to Mr. Yagami about Li before he took on the responsibility of Li. It was better to learn about what Misa picked up from hanging out with Li than being blind while with him. From what Misa had said, he's very friendly and a great cook. Cooking was going to be the topic to break the ice with Li.
"So, Misa tells me you're a great cook?" Mr. Yagami asked Li, Li looked towards his travelling companion, the handcuff chain rattled slightly. It didn't look like much of a surprise to Li after hearing Misa's name in the sentence.
"I just don't cook a ready meal; anyone can be a good cook if they use their own creativity than using something which just needs to be heated up," Li said. Mr. Yagami nodded slightly, it would make sense but he didn't have to shoot down already made food.
"Would you still go for a readymade meal if you were running late?"
"I can't, I refuse to have a readymade meal. While I can stomach anything, I hate the taste it leaves in my mouth. Because of this, I'll skip meals if I'm running late which involve a readymade meal," Li said in a determined voice. There was a slight change in personality there, slipping into a different aura slightly. Mr. Yagami brushed it off as that was normal in people as he experienced it himself while working or at home.
"You refuse readymade meals but you've said you can stomach anything?"
"In my opinion, they aren't healthy for me. I'd rather have a fresh meal where the nutrients are better. That's just it," Li said with a smile on his face.
"At least you eat healthy foods instead of junk food all the time."
"Doesn't Light?"
"No, neither does Ryuzaki." Li simply shrugged until the toy shop came into view. Li was finally allowed to be set free from the handcuffs and allowed to do his job. Mr. Yagami was going to watch him work but he didn't mind.
The Death Spark - Chapter 8
Hei got changed into his work clothes after being released from the handcuffs. He didn't blame Ryuzaki's suspicious behaviour but he didn't need to go too far that he needed to be kept on a leash of the police. Not even Misaki was like that and she had suspects about him. She couldn't do anything without solid evidence while Ryuzaki wanted to get the evidence even if it killed him. Hei noticed Mr. Yagami was watching him and made him feel a little uncomfortable but he just needed to work with what was happening until Ryuzaki couldn't find anything and then he'd let him go. He hoped.
Hei couldn't help but stop working as he felt a disturbance in the air. His whole contractor behaviour was screaming at him, telling him that something was going to happen and he couldn't help without uncovering himself. He scanned the shop floor, noting where Mr. Yagami was before he found what was disturbing his contractor behaviour. Outside the shop, a young man was slowing choking on something. Hei quickly landed the helicopter back on the landing pad and placed the controller down. Mr. Yagami watched Hei before he realised what was going on and looked in Hei's direction, he also saw the individual in serious pain. Hei ran out the shop and went to help the young male; Mr. Yagami gently pulled Hei away from the male and went to examine him.
"I'm going to call an ambulance," Hei said quickly as he went to grab a phone and call for an ambulance.
"There's no need," Mr. Yagami told Hei, causing him to stop.
"Why?"
"He's already dead...Kira killed him," Mr. Yagami told Hei.
"So this is Kira's power? To kill after a few seconds have passed?" Hei thought to himself, there wasn't much that could be done. His contractor behaviour was correct, he couldn't help without exposing himself, he knew that he could have helped before the heart gave up, he had done so on himself after a contractor tried to kill him with a heart attack...which was probably what caused this male to collapse and pass away.
"Who's Kira?" Hei asked, it wasn't a stupid question but he was aware that something like this...was probably going to be kept a secret from him. Hei knew that he had the power to kill others by just a simple touch, because of this...there was a slight glimmer of possible contractor activity but the stars disproved the thought.
"Kira isn't your concern." Hei shrugged and went to leave Mr. Yagami so that he could get back to his job, he was being paid to do it and the kids seemed to like him. They weren't aware on what was happening between Hei and the police so they were safe and happy playing with Hei. Hei wasn't one to disappoint kids. They were innocent, untainted by the horrors of the world until they reached the age when they start learning what the world really holds.
"Mr. Shengshun, can you reach up and grab the soft dragon toy?" Hei turned his attention towards a young girl with short brown hair, dark brown eyes with a cheerful smile on her face as she pointed towards the small red dragon plush sitting on top of the tallest shelf. Hei smiled and reached up towards the plush and brought it down and handed it to the child.
"You look like a princess to me," Hei gave her a smile. Her face lit up after Hei gave her the compliment.
"I like being a princess but not the princess who's always got servants doing everything," she giggled.
"To prove that not all princesses are the same, I'm sure you would get a lot of support."
"Thanks Mr. Shengshun," she smiled before she went to return back to her parents who were busy shopping for her brother. Hei smiled at the cute little family scene before loneliness hit him right in the chest, his smile faded.
The Death Spark - Chapter 8
Mr. Yagami had watched Li as he dealt with the customer, it was very clear that Li enjoyed working with people, children to be more specific. This would immediately push any ideas that Li was the masked man away as he got on well with the child, but it was still possible that he was the masked man. They had Kira and that was the worst thing to have, with the masked man too...there was something that they could rule out. The masked man wasn't Kira himself.
FireCacodemon: Maledicus - There won't be too much, I promise.
