A week passed, and Tally was feeling at least 85%. But she would be lying to herself if she said she wasn't still sore. She'd also be lying if she said she didn't like the treatment she was getting. Free food, a nice, soft bed, showers without having to break into the local YMCA; It was definitely a step up.
Macey the social worker came nearly every day. She and Tally would talk, play cards and watch Spanish soap operas. Which they were doing presently.
"There is no way Rodrigo can do that to Sofia!" Tally said, gesturing to the T.V wildly.
Macey laughed in agreement. "I know!"
"How can he cheat on her-when she's pregnant-with another woman?" Tally asked in exasperation. "And if that wasn't enough. His mistress turns out to be his cousin? How the hell did they not know they're related!?"
"To be fair I don't think Sofia's baby is Rodrigo's." Macey said thoughtfully. Tally's jaw slacked.
"No. Then who could it be?"
"I'm thinking Lorenzo."
Tally shook her head as the show ended on a cliffhanger until the next day. Macey shook her head and stood up, fixing her skirt.
Tally looked at the social worker. She had come to the conclusion that despite who she was, she liked Macey. She was nice. Macey and she wouldn't talk about her being an orphan or what was going to happen; they just talked. About stupid things; like whether or not Rodrigo was Sofia's baby's father. What were their favorite T.V shows and what they liked to eat best. They played stupid games together. Macey smuggled in chocolate for Tally when the hospital hardly ever put anything on her plate. And she seemed like Macey actually cared about what happened to her. And Tally hadn't had that in a long time.
And it felt…nice.
But she couldn't think about that now. Today was the day she was going to break out of the hospital. What she was going to do after that, well, Tally didn't really have that figured out just yet. Throughout the week, her mind kept drifting back to those strange turtles who had saved her life. They had made it clear that they were uncomfortable with her being there, but she couldn't help wanting to try and find their hide-out again.
"Alright kiddo, that's it for me for the day." Macey said with a smile, gathering up her bag. Tally swung her legs off the bed and stood up gingerly. Macey patted her shoulders before turning to leave.
"Macey-" Tally said suddenly. She tucked her hair back and bit her lip.
"Yeah sweetheart?" Macey asked, turning to her.
"Could…" she hesitated. "Could I have a hug?"
Macey smiled broadly and wrapped her arms around Tally lightly. Tally sighed into her and hugged the social worker tighter. Macey hugged back, just as tight. Tally had almost forgotten how much she had missed hugs. And how long it had been since she had had one. She almost broke down when Macey started to rub her back soothingly, but she told herself to hold together. For a split second she was reminded of her mom. That's how her mom used to hug her. And then her dad would come behind her and sandwich her in between them. Tally felt a pang of guilt. Macey would come in the next day and Tally wouldn't be there. Would she be worried? Sad?
Tally cleared her throat and sniffed, finally breaking the hug.
"See you tomorrow Tal." Macey said softly. Tally nodded, even though it was a lie.
"Macey," she said thickly. "Thanks." She paused. "For everything."
Macey smiled softly. "You're welcome Tally." She said, squeezing Tally's hand before walking out. The door clicked shut and Tally exhaled a breath she didn't know she was holding. She ran a hand through her hair and climbed back in bed. She wanted to try and get some sleep before she left.
A few hours later, Tally woke up to a nurse dropping off her dinner. She thanked the nurse with a smile and started to dig in. The nurse smiled and left. Tally waited ten seconds before swinging her legs off the bed. She grabbed her cloths from the dresser on the other side of the room and went into the bathroom. She hit the shower, stripped out of the hospital gown (which had an embarrassingly cute purple and pink kitten print on it) and stepped in, bouncing slightly as the water warmed up.
Tally made sure to get as much as the grime off her as possible. And she practically used half the shampoo and conditioner bottle on her stupidly long hair. She made a mental note to cut it at some point. Once she had decided she was sufficiently cleaned, she shut the water off and dried off. She threw on her black tank top, her jeans with like a gazillion tears and rips in them, and her beat up tennis shoes.
Tally used the brush the hospital had provided and tried to tangle the mess that was her hair. She winced as she tugged at a particularly large knot, but she got it and studied herself in the mirror. Her red hair was well past her hips, with a ton of split ends, so she threw it up into a ponytail in annoyance and examined her face. Her cheeks were fuller, obviously a consequence of eating three meals for a week straight. The shadows under her green eyes were all but non-existent, and her hundreds of freckles stood out against her pale skin. She tugged up her shirt and examined the small scars speckled across her stomach, just above her bellybutton. The stitches that Dr. Yan had replaced with that turtle's-Donnie-were dissolvable, so they would disappear within another week or so. She frowned and ran her fingers over them lightly. The bullet must have shattered upon impact or something, because that was the only way she figured she could have speckled scars like that. She shook her head and pulled her shirt down.
"Another one to add to the list." She mumbled before exiting the bathroom and grabbing her jacket. She zipped it up and grabbed the roll on her dinner plate, stuffing it in her mouth as she opened the window. She glanced around to make sure no one was around before swinging out onto the nearest branch. Tally winced as the stitches tugged slightly, but she managed to close the window. She felt a pang of guilt as she did so. But she shook her head and shimmied down the tree to the lowest branch, about ten feet off the ground. She jumped and landed in the soft grass.
Tally stood up and dusted herself up before disappearing into the night, leaving the lights of the hospital behind her.
