Jess sailed through the day of classes. A few well timed jests here and there and by the time they left last period, the halls were clearing for her. Not Kimber. The look on that girl's face! You'd think that nobody had ever thought 'oh wow, Kimber kinda sucks, maybe we should do something about her.' Because it was way too easy to dethrone her. Kimber trailed along behind her, staring at Jess like she was on display at a museum. Too valuble to touch. Kimber hadn't even fought back. Maybe she was too arrogant to think that the new girl had the nerve to do anything. At home Jess wouldn't, but England is a long way away from Concord. She just hoped that Emma's day had been as successful as hers.
They met up on the front steps after the bell rang. Mr. Hawthorne was supposed to pick them up in five minutes.
"How was your day?" Jess asked.
"It was great! Jessica was really nice. Turns out her family is a lot like mine, Austen nuts and all. We had a lot to talk about." Emma smiled at the memory.
"Yeah, I did most of the talking in our little pair."
"So that girl didn't give you much trouble?"
"I was the one giving her trouble!" Jess laughed and confusion spread across Emma's face, she tilted her head to the right and it reminded Jess of Spice. And home. "I decided, new country, new me! I'm gonna take over the school!" She raised her fist triumphantly and struggled to keep a straight face.
"Uh, if that's what you want to do." Emma fiddled with the straps of her bag and didn't meet Jess' eyes.
"Not so fast missy," she deepened her voice in the way that made Emma giggle. She looped her arm through Emma's. "I'm taking you with me."
"Really?!" Emma's face lit up. Jess grinned.
"Of course! BBBF and before evil take over the school plans!" Emma giggled.
"Alright." Jess nodded and off they went descending the stairs arm in arm, off to Mr. Hawthorne's waiting car.
Emma moaned as she stumbled over to her bed and face planted into her pillow. She just wanted to go to bed! Jess popped her head through the door.
"That bad, huh?"
"Worse." Emma sighed. "Can you believe they gave us homework on the first day?"
"Uh, yeah." Jess flounced onto the bed and jumped onto next to Emma. "I've already finished mine." Emma glared at her as best she could with her face still attached to her pillow.
"When am I ever going to use geometry in my life? Why does it matter?" Emma rolled over and raised her hands in defeat, as if the was asking the ceiling fan for answers to her deepest questions.
"What if you want to be an architect?" For this Jess received another one of Emma's signature glares.
"You know I want to be an author." Jess rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, but what if you change your mind? You can't know what you're going to be doing that far in the future." Emma rolled on to her side to face Jess.
"I know." She sounded so sure that Jess let the subject drop. Jess sat up.
"What do you need help with?" Emma frowned and got up off the bed. She trudged over to her desk, grabbing her geometry notebook and tossing it onto her bed.
"I don't understand angle bisectors." Emma returned to the bed.
By the time Emma had finished her homework, thirty minutes had passed and the girls were exasperated with each other. Emma had a talent for being hard headed. Mrs. Hawthorne saved them both when she called them down for dinner. At least Darcy was down there.
Jess ran to her room to freshen up and almost tripped over the clothes that were already strewn all over her room. At the thought of tripping she grinned.
It took ten minutes to get everyone down to the dinner table and settled in, the parrot squawking at them the whole way. The food was already beginning to cool by the time they had started actually eating. And then the doorbell rang.
Emma volunteered to answer it. She dropped her napkin down next to her plate. She almost got lost finding the door. Stupid, but she still hadn't quite learned the lay of the land yet. She wondered if the Berkeley's were having the same problem back in Concord. When she finally found her way to the door she yanked it open prepared to greet the mailman or whoever it was calling at the hour. She had to look down to find the perpetrator. It was a short, pudgy, brunette boy. His hands behind his back, he was twisting slightly on the spot, mumbling down to his shoes.
"Excuse me?" It came out sharper than she intended. She leaned forward to here him better and he took a step back, startled.
"My….my aunt, well,….she was wondering….if you needed anything?" He looked up as he said the last words and his eyes widened. Emma could tell this meant trouble.
"And, what's your name?" She was trying to be polite, but it took all her self-restraint not to slam the door right in his face, and be down with the creepy little boy.
"Ro-o-o-pert. I'm in your math class." Maybe not so little then, but still, creepy.
"Well, Ropert. Your aunt is quite kind, but we don't need anything at the moment, thank you." And she finally got to shut the door. Akward situation over she trotted back to the dining room, not getting lost once.
"Who was that?" Darcy could hardly look up from his food to ask the question. There was food literally falling out of his mouth.
"Nobody. Some kid." And she took her seat at the table.
A/N: Sorry I haven't posted in so long. Life really got in the way of things. I looked back through all of the old reviews though and it really inspired me to keep going. This chapter is something of a filler though, since I need to really get a feel for the story and be sure of where I want it to go. I will be posting every Thursday though. No less than weekly, but maybe more if I'm feeling particularly inspired. Stay tuned for possible Jess/ Darcy moments in the next chapter.
