Chapter 12

Lorelai had spent the past hour sitting in Rory's bedroom floor playing with her daughter. As she sat there watching her child crawl around, Lorelai was thinking back on the past year of her life. Today is exactly one year since a simple piece of plastic changed her life; one year since she found out she was pregnant.

She remembered it like it was yesterday. Traces of snow were on the ground from the previous week's shower. Luke was working at the hardware store with William. She had fled her house after unsuccessfully fitting in her cotillion dress to the little town of Stars Hollow she fell in love with. How Sookie drove her to the next town over so they could pick up a test. Lorelai could still picture her and Sookie in the bathroom staring down at the double pink lines.

The panic attack she almost had when she thought of telling Luke. Freaking out over the fact that the Danes would find out. She wasn't too worried about her parents because she already knew what their reaction would be...but thinking Luke would leave her because of her pregnancy or thinking his parents would reccomend an abortion scared the hell out of her. Lorelai was so deep in thought she hadn't heard the door open.

"What are you thinking about?"

Lorelai looked up at Luke and smiled. "Just thinking about what happened one year ago today. When we found out about Rory."

"That was quite a surprise."

"An unexpected surprise. Unexpected but good. I know she's only a few months old but I can't imagine life without her."

Luke nodded his head in agreement. They had both shared similar confessions a few weeks prior when they celebrated their one year anniversary. "It's been a rollercoaster year."

"Mmhmm. And now we're watching part of that year crawling around. She's the best thing that happened to me; besides you."

Later that day, Luke had gone to work with William and Liz was out with friends leaving Lorelai and Katelyn at the house with Rory. The two women were sitting in the living room with Rory playing on the floor. Katelyn was reading a book while Lorelai worked on homework, glancing up every so often to look at Rory.

"How is school?"

"Easy. I learned all everything they're teaching in my old school. Which in my case is good because I get my homework done fast so I can care for Rory. The counsler told me I'm right on track for the top five percent for the senior class."

"The teacher's tell me Luke had improved remarkably in his classes. I've never seen his grades so high. He was always a 'B' student. That's because of you. You're doing great things for your family."

"I just want what's best for him and Rory. If he can't go to college because of me, he at least deserves a high GPA to get him somewhere in life and we're both doing it so Rory can have the best life we can provide her."

"Well the two of you are doing a great job so far. That girl on the floor, her devolpment is that good because of both of you."

That night after Luke and Lorelai had gotten Rory down for bed, the couple was getting ready for bed themselves.

"I was talking to my dad today," Luke started once they were both laying down.

"Okay..."

"We were talking about our future. I was thinking after graduation we should try to get our own apartment. Rory will be almost nine months old when we graduate. And my mom can still watch Rory if you get a job..."

"When I get a job. But I don't know. Let's think it over, talk about it some more. We need to remember that we will have rent to pay, groceries to buy, bills to pay and a baby to feed and clothe."

"So we'll talk more?"

"Yes, we'll talk more. But now, let's go to sleep because our daughter wore me out today from all the playing."

The next day, being Sunday, meant family day for the small family of three. Snow was predicted to fall so Lorelai made sure Rory was bundled up well before they headed off the Hartford. Normally on Sundays, Luke and Lorelai would eat breakfast with Luke parents and Liz then head out to Hartford. Their day out was usually walking around the town, window shopping, buying a few things for Rory and a lunch out then they would head back to the Hollow.

Today Lorelai managed to talk Luke into going to the mall. As much as he wanted to, Luke could never say no to Lorelai's crystal blue eyes. They had walked around the for a few hours and somehow, Luke had managed to walk ahead of Lorelai. The two were having a conversation when Luke realized he was talking to himself.

Luke looked back and saw Lorelai standing in front of a window. A display window. A display window for a jewelry store. "What are you doing?"

"Oh...just...admiring the uh...necklaces."

Luke knew what she was really looking at. Next to the necklaces she claimed to be 'admiring' sat a couple of rings. Little did Lorelai know, Luke had already spotted these two and, with the help of William, bought the one Lorelai was basically drooling over. "Okay..." he hoped he sounded convincing. He knew when the right time would be, granted it was a few months away.
