Chapter 13
The months flew by and it was now the day of Luke and Lorelai's graduation. Luke was out with William for some unknown reason to the females of the house and Lorelai was struggling to get herself and Rory ready for graduation until Liz jumped in.
"Focus on yourself. You only get one high school graduation. I'll get the little one all fixed up."
As Lorelai was applying make-up, her memory flooded back to the day in February she and Luke talked about moving after graduation. With the help of Katelyn and William, Luke and Lorelai would be getting their own apartment by mid-July.
Lorelai sat at the table after finishing homework and began crunching numbers. In a notebook, she wrote down the budge they had to work with every month and proceeded to divide it up in pieces. She figured if they got the cheapest package for cable and kept their electrical and gasoline appliances to a minimum as well as an inexpensive rent that they could make it work.
Later that night when Luke came home from the hardware store, Lorelai ran her research by him and both agreed to figure out how to make it work. Unknown to them that while they sat at the dining room table trying to figure out their expenses, Katelyn overheard their plans. When the family had sat down for dinner that night, Katelyn brought the subject up to Luke and Lorelai.
"Will and I have talked it over. If you two are serious about getting your own apartment, we would like to pay for the rent. Or most of it, if that would make you feel a little better, Lorelai. You have a very well laid out plan for your expenses and we'd like to take some stress off of your shoulders."
Lorelai looked over at Luke who stared at his parents. "Lorelai and I will talk it over tonight and let you know tomorrow."
They had decided to let Katelyn and Will pay for however much of the rent they wanted, though Lorelai preferred a fifty-fifty deal. They figured with that they would have more wiggle room to buy what they needed other than necessities. By mid-July, Luke and Lorelai would be moving into their own two bedroom apartment just three blocks over from Luke's parents. Luck was with them when they decided to move because Katelyn and Will were about to get rid of extra furniture they had in the attic and apartment leaving Luke and Lorelai even more money then intended because no furniture would need to be bought.
"Lucas William Danes," was announced as Luke walked across the stage to collect his diploma. A few more kids went before "Lorelai Victoria Gilmore" was announced. Once she had collected her diploma, she and Luke shared a look from their separated seats that said 'we graduated even with a baby'.
To say Katelyn and William were proud would be an understatement. The bone crushing hug Katelyn gave Lorelai proved that statement to be true.
After saying goodbyes and good lucks to their friends, Luke and Lorelai rejoined Kate and Will who were treating the graduates to dinner at an Italian restaurant. Considering it was their graduation day, Lorelai didn't get suspicious over it because they never went out to family dinners to fancy places unless they were celebrating something.
While Kate and Will took Rory with them to get their table, Luke dragged Lorelai over to a secluded garden. This action, however did make Lorelai suspicious. Luke took Lorelai and stood her in front of a rose bush.
Standing in front of Lorelai, Luke got down on one knee. Now Lorelai knew what it was about. She couldn't exactly say she was surprised because of subtle hints Luke has been unknowingly dropping lately.
"We've known each other for a year and a half and we have the most amazing daughter together. I never expected my life to change so much in just eighteen months, but it did and you made them the best changes to happen to a guy. Lorelai, will you marry me?"
Lorelai looked at Luke in shock even though she had an idea of what was going on weeks earlier. She stood frozen in the same spot for what felt like minutes. Finally, Lorelai snapped out of it and took a deep breath. She wanted to marry him. But was it the right time for them to do it? Well, she thought, we don't have to get married months after we get engaged...we can have a long engagement.
"Yes."
Luke Danes never thought one word would mean so much to him. He got up off of his knee and placed the ring on Lorelai's finger. Thankfully no one was around to witness the intimate moment...and the breath taking kiss the two shared.
Inside the restaurant, Katelyn and William sat a table for four with Rory in a highchair next to where Lorelai would be seated. Both knew what Luke was planning on doing when they arrived; that was part of the reason for coming out to celebrate.
"I wonder what's taking so long," William voiced.
"If I know Lorelai, she's probably thinking it all out in her head if now is the right time."
"Well I don't see why it's not the right time. They're graduated, both have jobs and are moving into their own apartment in just a few weeks. Plus the already have a child already."
"She'll say yes, don't worry, dear."
Just as Will was about to respond, Luke and Lorelai joined their family at the table. William and Katelyn stared expectantly at the two. "Well?" Will asked, wanting to end the staring contest.
"She said yes," Luke verified.
Later that night, after Luke and Lorelai did a bit more packing, both were sitting on the bedroom floor looking through a photo album Lorelai had been keeping up to date since Rory was born.
"Luke?"
"Yeah?"
"I think...I think that since you'll be eighteen before me that when I hit eighteen we should get married."
"If that's what you want. We have just under a year to get everything in order."
"And I think after we've been married for two or three years we should have another baby." Lorelai never thought she would be so bold in a conversation like this, but she wanted her idea out there.
"We'll worry about that when the time comes. But I think it would be a great idea."
A/N: I think there will only be about two or three chapters left including the epilogue. Then maybe possibly after I've completed all of my stories I will start a sequel for this one & stay on track for updates on it. Let me know what you think of the idea.
