This fic takes place in the future the events of Veritas accrued (so if you haven't seen it yet there will be spoilers). Castle and Beckett are married but the season finale is not part of this the wedding will be mentioned but it will be the way I image their wedding. Everything else is as is on the show.

Chapter 15: Heroes and Messages From Heaven

Castle closed his eyes waiting for the pain to hit, he heard the gun shot but there was no pain "Oh God" he croaked "Kate?!" he begged hoping to hear her voice hoping the bullet hadn't hit her.

"R..Rick" she whispered "A..Are you okay" she asked her voice shaky

"I'm fine are you both okay" Castle move his hand to her abdomen.

"Yeah we're fine but I..I heard a gun shot"

"Hey bro are you both okay" Esposito ran up a little out of breath "Whoa nice dude but you might want to put some clothes on" he grinned

"Javi! Turn around!" Kate blushes

"Okay, okay sorry chica" he giggles tuning away

Kate pulls away from Castle and stands up starting to get dressed she gasps tears filling her eyes when she sees the body on the sand near the blanket.

Castle saw it too as he pulled on his shorts "It's okay Kate" he laces his hand with her good hand.

"Wh..What happened wh..why are we still here" she whispered.

"I went out to the kitchen to get us beers and your pops a soda I saw someone lurking outside I got my gun and went to investigate, I heard voices I saw that asshole pointing his gun at you" he pointed at the body "So I took him down" Esposito explained.

"Javi" Kate wrapped her arms around him being careful of the sling "Thank you" she whimpered into his shoulder.

"Hey we're family we have each other's backs it's what families do" he shrugged

"How can I ever thank you man if it wasn't for you" Castle starts but is over come with emotion.

"It's okay bro you'd do the same for Lanie come on lets go tell Gates we got the other hit man" Espo pat the writer on the back.

"Okay but can we not mention the sex part" Kate moves into Castle's embrace.

Esposito laughs "You got it Beckett"

The trio made their way back to the house.

"Daddy I thought I heard a gun shot" Alexis ran into her father's arms.

"You did pumpkin but its okay" he kissed the top of her head.

"What happened Richard? Are you and Katherine alright?" Martha asked concerned.

Castle took a deep breath "Kate and I were on the beach lying on a blanket when this guy appeared he was going to kill us I actually though he had killed Kate" he tightened his hold on his wife "But the shot we all heard was Espo, Bracken's hit man is dead" he explained

"That's my boo!" Lanie grins kissing Esposito on the lips. "And just lying on that blanket uh huh sure writer boy" she teasing with a wink.

Kate blushes burying her face in Castle's chest.

"I knew it writer boy you two were getting your freak on, on the beach!" Lanie giggles.

Kate pulls away from Castle too look at her best friend, her sister. "He's been getting death threats Lanie! I was scared I thought I was going to lose him I..I needed him, I needed to be as close to him as I could be" tears fell from her hazel eyes. "And I don't regret it w..we both almost died tonight" she cried softly.

"I'm sorry girl I didn't mean to upset you I was only playin I think making love under the stars is so romantic" Lanie smiled a little "Javi why can't you be more like writer boy" she playfully hits his chest.

"Yeah Kevin I agree with Lanie why can't you be more like Castle" Jenny agrees.

Esposito groans "Thanks bro for making us look bad" he glances at the writer.

"Yeah thanks man" Ryan added.

"Alright detectives, that's enough, Esposito go call in the body" Gates orders.

"Yes sir" He disappears into Castle's office.

The older woman walks over to Kate and Castle.

"Are you both okay" she asks almost in a motherly way.

"Yes sir I'm sorry you had to hear our uh, beach adventure" Kate's cheeks flush.

"Oh please detective I'm a married woman my husband and I were adventuress newlyweds too so believe me I've been there its fine" Gates smiles.

"So what happens now sir with the body and Bracken did any of you find anything in my mother in law's things that could help" Castle asks pulling Kate close to him again.

Tears pricked Kate's eyes when he called her mom his mother in law he amazes her more every day.

At that moment Jim comes out of Castle's office holding an old copy of *Flowers For Your Grave* "Rick, Katie I think I found something"

"Dad is that one of Rick's books" Kate asks

"Yes I found something in the inside cover of the book" Jim explained

"In my book? What is it?" Castle wondered

"Well apparently you've met her, its signed and key wrapped in a piece a paper was taped underneath where you signed" Jim told him.

"What yo..you met my mom?" Kate took the book from her dad and looked at the inside tears filled her eyes as she read the words her husband had written so many years ago. "To Johanna thanks for being my biggest fan I'm touched you want me to meet your daughter, Kate sounds like an amazing girl who knows maybe someday I will wishing you the best, Always Richard Castle"

Kate choked back a sob her mother had told Castle about her and even wanted him to meet her.

"Kate what's wrong, are you okay" Castle asked.

"M..My mom sh..she told you about me she wanted us t..to meet an..and this book i..it was our first case" she shows him what hw wrote inside.

"Wow" he whispered reading his own handwriting "It's kinda eerie it's in the book that brought us together it's almost like she knew" he smiled

Kate's mind was reeling her mother had met the man she married, the man who made all her dreams come true, the man who saved her life in more ways than one and made her whole again. She blinked back tears and turned to her father "Dad what's the key to? Was anything written on the paper" she asked

"I don't know what the key is for and yes there's something on the paper but it's written in your mother's special code" he told her.

"Can I see it dad I cracked her code in her day planner maybe I can crack this one too" Castle told his father in law.

"Sure son" Jim hands him the piece of paper.

Castle takes the paper studying it. He gasps "I know where the key goes"

All eyes were on him waiting to hear where the key went and what it opened.
