Having a baby was a lot harder for Maggie then she anticipated. She had always wanted to be a mother and she had learned from the best - her aunt Lucille. Lucille had been there for her her entire life and she knew she could rely on her and her uncle Henry, so when she felt she over stayed her welcome at her father's house, she decided to stay a few days at her aunt and uncle's. Marty had been reluctant about moving in with Maggie's family because he didn't want to be a burden to them, but when the baby finally came, he agreed it would be best. They had all taken him in without any questions and he appreciated it so much.
The first night at Henry and Lucille's was the worst for the newest Langston baby. She was up every few hours crying. Maggie and Marty didn't know what to do. They decided to leave her in the crib and let her cry herself to sleep. When the crying persisted for a few minutes, Maggie got up and walked into the master bedroom without even thinking about where she was going. She crawled in between Lucille and Henry, which woke up her aunt. Lucille looked around and realized it was her niece who had crawled into bed with her.
"Maggie, sweetheart," she said softly. She could hear the faint crying of a baby. "What's the matter? Are you okay? Is the baby okay?" she asked, her maternal instinct kicking in. That's when Henry woke up to the sound of Lucille's voice.
"I can't get her to stop crying," Maggie said, her eyes fluttering with sleep. "I need a break from it."
"Oh, sweetheart," Lucille said as she smiled to herself. She kissed Maggie's head as Maggie comfortably moved around in the bed, sleep fighting to take over. "Get some sleep, I'll relieve Marty from baby duty," she added, the sound of Maggie's daughter crying still very prominent in the house. Lucille got out of bed and walked out of the room, making her way into the guest bedroom. She saw Marty, half asleep, in bed and baby Barbara crying in her crib. She softly laughed and picked up the baby before softly rocking her back and fourth. The baby quieted down, which woke Marty up. He wiped away the drool that had rolled down his chin.
"How - how did you do that?" he asked as he looked around the room and watched his girlfriend's aunt cradle his baby. Lucille looked up at Marty and laughed again. She walked over to the bed and sat down on Maggie's side so the new father could look at his daughter in her arms.
"She just needed someone to hold her," Lucille replied as Marty looked over Lucille's shoulders and ran a finger down Barbara's cheek.
"You make it look so easy," Marty said softly as he just watched Barbara look up at the two of them. He yawned and rested against the pillows again. Lucille looked at the new father and she moved a hand so it was resting on top of his. "Where's Maggie?" he asked when he realized that his girlfriend wasn't in the room.
"She's in the master bedroom," Lucille replied. "Go back to sleep, honey, I'll be on baby duty tonight." She didn't mind being on baby duty, especially because she knew how tired both parents were.
"Thank you," Marty said and he moved down in bed so his head was resting against the pillow. A few minutes passed and both Marty and the baby were asleep. Lucille put the baby back into the crib and walked to the master bedroom, not before turning the light off, though. She walked into her bedroom and noticed that Henry and Maggie were cuddling and asleep. Maggie's head was nuzzled against Henry's chest and Henry's arm was wrapped around Maggie lovingly. They both looked peaceful. Lucille just watched them for a few seconds. She figured that's how her and her husband looked when they were cuddling at night. It was a cute picture to look at and it brought back memories from when Maggie was little and would sleep with them. Deciding that they all would be uncomfortable in one bed, she made her way back to the guest room and crawled into bed with Marty. She figured he wouldn't mind.
It didn't take long before Lucille was asleep again. Luckily for them, the baby didn't wake up again until morning. When she did wake up, Marty was the first one to hear her cry. He hadn't realized Lucille had fallen asleep in the bed with him and he hadn't realized that they had started cuddling in the night. They were both so used to cuddling with their significant other that they subconsciously did it. Like Lucille had suspected, her head was nuzzled against Marty's chest and his arm was wrapped around her body. He was surprised at the appearance of Lucille in the bed with him, but oddly enough, it wasn't awkward in a way he suspected it would have been. It was a little awkward, but not in a sexual or weird way. He moved so he was sitting against the headboard. The sudden disappearance of heat from Marty and the movement he made woke Lucille up. The sound of Barbara crying is what met her when she opened her eyes. When Marty felt the bed move, he looked at Lucille and smiled, sleep still evident in his face.
"Hey," he said softly. Lucille smiled back at Marty and got out of bed, without even thinking about it, to pick Barbara up.
"How'd you sleep?" she asked. She walked over to the crib, picked up the baby and quieted her down enough to change her diaper.
"Once she fell asleep, really good," Marty said as he laughed. Lucille grabbed a clean diaper and the wipes that Marty and Maggie had packed before placing the baby on the bed. "You don't have to do that," Marty started to say to get Lucille to stop. But Lucille just looked up at him with the well-known Lucille glare to stop him. He immediately stopped and allowed her to change his daughter's diaper, which she did.
Meanwhile, in the master bedroom, Henry and Maggie continued to sleep. They both had the Langston sleeping gene, which meant they could sleep in as long as they wanted with no problem. What woke Henry up was the sudden movement Maggie made when she woke up and attempted to get out of his arms to go the bathroom. When she successfully maneuvered out of his arms, she realized she had woken her uncle up.
"Did I wake you up?" she asked with a sheepish grin. Henry just laughed and looked at the clock.
"It's fine, Lucille was going to come and wake me up soon, anyways," he said. Both he and Maggie knew that Lucille was the early riser in the family and if she thought they where sleeping in too long, she would wake them up.
"Where is Aunt Lucille, anyways?" Maggie asked. "I don't think she ever came back to bed last night." Henry had fallen asleep before Lucille had come back into the room last night, so he just figured she fell asleep in the guest room.
"She probably fell asleep in the guest room with Marty," Henry replied as he shrugged and sat up in bed. "I'll go find her," he added and he got out of bed. He then walked out of the room with the mission of finding his wife. Maggie followed him to the guest room and the two of them walked into the room to find Marty and Lucille looking at the baby while Marty fed her a bottle. Maggie and Henry both stopped and just watched then while they where both still unaware that they where being watched.
"He's still so awkward with her," Maggie noted softly, more to herself then to anyone. Henry looked down at his niece and then wrapped his arm around her shoulders. She leaned her head against his chest while they watched on. "And Aunt Lucille is so good with kids, it's disgusting," she added jokingly.
"He'll get the hang of it," Henry replied as he laughed. "And I know, it is kinda disgusting, isn't it?" he asked with another laugh. Comfortable silence fell over them as they watched. Lucille then looked up and noticed that they weren't alone.
"When did you two get there?" she asked, which diverted Marty's attention from Barbara to Henry and Maggie.
"A minute ago," Maggie said as she smiled at her aunt. Lucille smiled back and Maggie wondered over to the bed, where Marty and Lucille were sitting. Lucille stood up so Maggie could sit next to her boyfriend. She then walked over to her husband, who wrapped his arm around her shoulders like he had done to Maggie when she was standing next to him.
"Good morning," she said softly as she stood up on her tippy toes and kissed her husband. Henry smiled and kissed Lucille happily back.
"Good morning," he replied when he pulled back. Lucille just looked up at him and lovingly smiled athim, happy that their life was how it was suppose to be. They had their baby boy back, Henry had come back after his heart attack and Maggie had a baby of her own. What more could they ask for?
"Lets let them enjoy a quiet baby and go get breakfast started," Lucille said while she took Henry's hand and led him downstairs, where they made breakfast for the entire family. A few minutes later, Maggie and Marty came downstairs with Barbara and a few minutes after that, Jacob came downstairs. The entire family then ate breakfast together and went about their normal day.
