Maggie always loved seeing her family with her daughter. They where always so willing to help and she absolutely loved it because it meant she got a break from baby duty. Her favorite was when Jacob would hold the baby and feed her a bottle. He was so careful and he cautious when he was holding her. That day, Jacob was looking forward to holding her. The bigger Barbara got, the more he loved spending time with her. He wouldn't leave anyone who was holding her alone and when it came time to feed her, it was time for him to finally hold her. He was always on bottle duty when the entire Langston family was over. No one knew how it happened, but it was more or less Jacob's job.
When it was time for Barbara to eat, Lucille, Maggie and Jacob where in the living room. Maggie was holding Barbara and Jacob was snuggled up against his mother on the couch. Since Marty and Henry where in the kitchen, Marty heated up the bottle and brought it to Jacob while Maggie was transferring the baby to her cousin. Jacob didn't move from his mother's side, he was in a comfortable enough of a position to support Barbara's head and feed her. Lucille watched the entire transfer of baby from her niece to her son with a smile on her face. She loved their relationship and she loved how much Jacob liked spending time with Barbara.
With the baby comfortable in his arms and the bottle in his hand, Jacob started feeding his cousin's baby. He smiled at Barbara while she looked up at him with her big blue eyes that she inherited from her mother. Lucille's heart melted before she turned her attention back to her niece.
"So," she said, starting up another conversation. "How's post-pregnancy life treating you and Marty?" Barbara was already a month old and even though Lucille, Henry and Jacob helped a lot, they hadn't really caught up with Maggie and Marty.
"We're both tired, but we're loving it," Maggie said, obvious happiness written on her face. She smiled at her aunt happily.
"Yeah, you look really happy," Lucille replied. "And I'm sure Marty is loving your new figure," she added teasingly, looking at Maggie's chest. She could remember when she gave birth to Jacob and nursed him, Henry couldn't keep his eyes off her chest.
"Aunt Lucille!" Maggie said as her jaw dropped at the comment. She then looked at Jacob and started to blush.
"Mom!" Jacob also added as he looked up at his mom with surprise. To be honest, he didn't know what his mother meant by that comment, but he knew it was a woman thing and from his cousin's reaction, he knew he would be grossed out by it had he understood what she meant. Lucille laughed.
"What?" she said. "It's a guy thing, it's programmed into their brains," she added from experience. Maggie couldn't help but to laugh. She thought of Lucille as her mother, so she was comfortable enough to talk about those things with her, even if it was a little weird at first. A comfortable silence fell over the women as Lucille looked back down at her son and grandniece. She was almost done with the bottle and when she finished it, Jacob took it out of her mouth and carefully put it on the coffee table. He wasn't sure what to do next, so Lucille took the baby, rested Barbara against her shoulder and softly patted her back. She did that for a few seconds before a burp was heard from the infant. Jacob stayed cuddling against his mother while she took care of the baby. Lucille then moved Barbara so she was lying on her stomach against Lucille's chest.
"You don't have to do that, Aunt Luce," Maggie said when she realized that Lucille was lulling her baby to sleep. She hadn't been on baby duty the entire afternoon and she didn't want them to feel obligated. She started to get out of the chair she was sitting in.
"It's fine, sweetheart," Lucille said before Maggie could get too far. "I love having baby duty. It's been so long," she added. Maggie stopped herself and sat back down, knowing it was best to indulge her aunt. The baby's breathing started to slow down as Lucille started rubbing Barbara's back. With Jacob still cuddling against her body, Lucille wrapped an arm around his shoulders and pulled him closer into her body. He rested his head in the crook of her shoulder and also started to fall asleep. Even though he had a hard time sleeping when he first returned, it was now easy for him to fall asleep. Lucille looked down at him and softly kissed the temple of her son's head. Maggie just watched as the younger Langston family members fell asleep next to her aunt.
"I swear, you have the touch," she said, almost jealously. It had gotten easier for her over the past week or so to know what her daughter wanted and how to deal with everything, but it was still hard.
"Your father use to say the same thing," Lucille said as she laughed. Maggie also laughed and watched her aunt. That's when Marty walked in to tell the rest of the family that dinner was ready. Lucille wiggled herself out of Jacob's embrace, softly laid him down on the couch and then walked into the kitchen, the baby still in her arms. Maggie just laughed at the sight of her aunt holding the baby while she got her dinner ready, but didn't say anything. The entire family then enjoyed their dinner and spent the rest of the evening enjoying each other's presence.
