Chapter 9
Peter rolled down the bland grey sidewalk, his skateboard's wheels clicked on the concrete as they rotated rapidly moving him forward with no effort. He couldn't believe himself, "A fight? Really Peter?" he thought to himself over his music that blared from the pair of headphones in his ear.
As he reached the subway station he felt his phone vibrate six or seven times, four from Harry, one from MJ, and one from Gwen. When he read her name on the screen he immediately remembered that they were supposed to go to that coffee place on 6th, he didn't mention it to her, but he had seen her there on more than one occasion. Sometimes he would sneek a picture or two of her, but only when he knew there was no way anybody could see him.
He practicly sprinted through the entire station, he barely made it onto the B train before the doors closed. His breathing was rapid as he tried to quickly type out a reply to the beautiful blonde.
Gwen
Are you alright? You took off kind of fast, I'm a little worried I saw Flash hit you. Are we still getting coffee? Jimmy's on 6th? 3:30? I hope you're okay
Peter
Hey! Yeah I'm fine! Don't be worried. Jimmy's? I'll be ther
In the middle of his message his phone died. He shook the small device a couple of times, then he hit it with the palm of his hand couple of times, when he finally gave up he let out a large sigh while throwing his head back and staring at the rattling metal roof of the subway.
...
The the large underground train slowed to a stop at 34th st, not far from the Empire State Building. As the doors to the train opened up Peter pushed through the crowd of people until he was out and running up the big concrete steps to the frantic streets of New York above.
Peter quickly pulled the skate board off of his bag and threw out on the ground, he was moving faster than anything he had attempted before. He was making great time until he rolled straight in front of a taxi, his ears rang out and his heart pounded like a drum, his eyes darted to the large yellow car no more than a few inches away from him, the driver's eyes were wide and stained with terror, the passenger's phone was flying out of his hand as the brakes were aggresively applied.
Peter knew he had to act quickly or being late to his and Gwen's first date would be the least of his worries. He jumped from the board on pure instinct, the black sand paper like board was crushed underneath the weight of the Taxi. He felt a sense of relief until he noticed his leap had sent him much, much higher than he wanted it to. Peter franticly flapped his arms as if he was going to grow wings and fly away, but instead he crashed hard on to the trunk of the yellow cab. "This couldn't possibly get any worse," he thought as he laid on the permanently dented trunk, he thought about just staying there until he heard frantic angry yelling coming from the front of the cab, the driver had gotten out and was speed walking toward the back of the car. Peter pried himself out of the trunk and ran past the angry man as he yelled at him in some other language. He managed to grab both halfs of the demolished skateboard before making a run for the sidewalk.
When he reached the sidewalk he turned and yelled back to the livid driver, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I'll pay for that, I will,"
He ran until he reached an alley between two large buildings. He leaned his back onto the brick wall of one, the crowded sidewalks and aggressive New York drivers would make it almost impossible for him to make it to the small coffee place in less than ten minutes, as he looked up to the sky wondering how he could make it before Gwen got there his eye caught a glimmer of light from one of the buildings, a spider was climbing from its web down the dark brick wall. He watched it effortlessly stick to the wall, then he remembered the spider from Oscorp, the one that bit him, and all the strange things he had been experiencing since then. Peter looked down at his hands which were firmly grasping the two broken pieces of his skateboard, he slowly tried to let go of one of them only to find it stuck to his hand like it had been glued there, then he remembered that morning trying to remove the bed sheet from his hand only to find it stuck the same way his board was. He shook his hands violently attempting to get the pieces to fly off, but they held strong, his ears picked up on every single scratching step the spider was taking down the wall and he started to get annoyed, as the small black spider inched closer the scratching became even more irritating, finally Peter lost it he swung his arm violently around and the piece of his board smacked against the spider and shattered into a thousand pieces.
At first he felt a tinge of guilt for killing the spider, but it didn't last long when he realized he had gotten one of the pieces off of his hand, he tried a similar motion to throw the other piece off his hand, but ended up smaking his hand against the wall. He covered his mouth to hold in the pain filled scream that bubbled up in his throat, his focuss vered away from the board stuck to his hand and centered itself around the bruise that had already started to form around the back side of his hand, then the board just fell off with a suction cup like sound. He glanced down at the piece for a moment before jumping to his feet and swiftly scampering to the side of the other building.
He looked down at his hands for a moment then stuck all ten of his finger tips to the wall, he gave a slight tug making sure he was securely attached to the brick, then without hesitation he pulled both of his hands off the wall. A smile came over his lips as he repeated this a few more times. One last time he stuck his finger tips to the wall, but instead of removing both hands he only pulled one off and moved it higher up, he pulled himself up and kept placing one hand after another until he was on the roof of the building. Peter peared over the edge and he let out a large smile followed by a fit of triumphant (and uncordinated) dance moves.
He looked up at a large electronic billboard, the time read 3:24 Peter gave a confident smirk before sprinting to the ledge of the brick building and jumping off. He jumped from building to building until he stuck to the side of a larger apartment building and climbed until he reached the top, he was a couple buildings away from Jimmy's Coffee Shop and he still had plenty of time before Gwen said she'd be there. He sat down on the ledge of the building and admired the beautiful chaos that was New York City, he pondered his new abilities and wondered if he had any he had yet to discover. So far everything seemed pretty consistent with spiders, so logically he thought that he should be able to spin a web, he began flicking his wrist in different peculiar motions. After a couple more unsuccessful attempts he disappointedly scrunched up his face and stood up off the ledge.
He peered down at the small coffee shop before walking over to the ledge and climbing down into an empty alley, he had to admit that climbing up the buildings was a lot easier than climbing down them, it kind of gave him a vertigo sensation.
Peter walked through the sea of people walking on the sidewalk until he reached the small building topped with gold letters spelling out Jimmy's Coffee. He quickly walked through the door reading the clock 3:33 he shut his eyes in disappointment, but when he opened them he saw her walking toward him holding a small cup, her lips were pursed out slightly and her blonde pony tail swung with her walk, she couldn't help but smile when she noticed he had finally seen her.
"We were starting to think you weren't going to show up," she said in her raspy tone.
"No, of course I was going to show, I just-uh got caught up," he said nervously.
"Caught up huh?" she teased.
"Yeah, I-I mean, you know traffic," he continued to nervously stammer over his words.
Gwen let out a little husky laugh before motioning Peter to follow her to where she was sitting. When the reached the brown leather booth in the back of the small building Peter noticed bright red hair being flicked back from the seat across from where Gwen had just sat down, then he remembered Harry had invited himself and MJ to come along. He sat down reluctantly next to Gwen when Harry looked over at him.
"There he is!" Harry exclaimed while smacking Peter's shoulder lightly with the back of his hand, "Always running late,"
Peter gave a believeable laugh before MJ cut in.
"I heard you fought Flash," she said a little to excited.
Peter visably tensed up before answering, "I-uh, I mean I wouldn't ca-call it a fight,"
MJ took a sip of her fruity drink before saying, "If you ask me he had it coming,"
It took everything in Gwen's entire body not to snap and yell at the red head sitting across from her, as far as she was concerned it was MJ's fault that Peter had to put himself in that situation in the first place. Annoyed she took a quick sip of her coffee never taking her green eyes off of Mary Jane.
Just as everything seemed as tense as could be the waitress came over to their table and placed a steaming white cup in front of Peter and walked away without saying a word.
"Oh yeah I just got you the same thing I get, hope that's okay," Harry said typing away at his phone.
Peter never really liked the taste of coffee, but he was exhausted and needed the energy boost. He took a small sip of the bitter liquid and nearly cringed at the taste. Peter took a couple more sips before Harry broke the silence.
"We should probably get going," he said taking the final sip of his own coffee.
The rest of them gave a silent nod before removing themselves from the brown leather booths. Harry and MJ took a noticeable head start out the door before Gwen and Peter could even get out of the building. Peter set a ten dollar bill under his cup of half full coffee and turned to see Gwen leaning against the counter smiling at him.
"Thanks for coming," she said still smiling, "I don't think I could've handled them alone,"
Peter laughed and started walking with her out the door, "Yeah, by themselves they're kind of a handful,"
Gwen gave her own cute chuckle while the walked out of the coffee shop. "Maybe today isn't as bad as I thought," Peter thought to himself as they formed into the crowd of people barely taking their eyes off of eachother the whole ten minute walk to Oscorp Tower.
