I decided that it was time to look up Amy and Ben. They had sent me a couple of letters, giving them to Ghastly, but never getting to me. They asked what had happened, if I was okay and then they just gave up after assurances from Tanith that I was still alive. I got out my phone and found that Tanith had put their numbers in. I called Amy first, as I thought that Ben would demand to know everything straight away and not let me go until I did. I dialled her phone number and it rang out twice before she picked up. "Hello?" She said and her voice sounded more mature. I smiled as I replied, "Hey Amy, Its Legacy." I heard a bang noise and shuffling about and then a scream.
"Amy?" I said wearily into the phone, not knowing whether she had died of shock or randomly been attacked by a wild dog. There was silence on the line before I heard a voice, which was more quiet and unsure than before. "Legacy?" she asked and I could feel her excitement and happiness flow through the phone. She was also worried but it was less prominent than the other emotions so I ignored it for now. "Yes, it's me. Um…Can you meet me for lunch today?" I asked and I heard a squeak of agreement. 'Are you okay now?" She asked, her voice still squeaking as she spoke. I smiled again, at her concern. "Yeah, I'm okay. I only just got back. See you at the Rain-Check Lounge?" She agreed and hung up and as she went, so did her emotions. I sighed in relief as I felt my own feelings resume their residence in my mind.
'I think this is going to be very overwhelming.' I thought to myself as I dialled Ben next. "Hello?" A deep voice called into the phone and recognised it straight away. "Hi, it's Legacy." I said and felt the strong emotions flood through me. I could feel anger, worry and happiness all at once and I had to block him out otherwise I was probably going to hit something. I started to pace around the lounge room of my apartment as I waited for a response for the silence on the phone. "What the fuck Legacy? Where have you been? For ten years? Why? Why wouldn't you at least tell us where you were going or why? You should have stayed in touch!" He went on and on, yelling into the phone as I stayed silent.
I guess I deserved the scolding, I can't imagine what he was going though, having his friend disappear without telling him where they were going and then being told by people he doesn't know very well that she had to go and he couldn't see her or contact her until she was ready to come back. And that they had no idea when exactly that would be. "I'm so sorry, Ben." I said after he had finished his rant. I knew that he wouldn't be mad if he didn't care so I let him be. I was glad that he was, in a way, because it showed that he cared. "Meet me for lunch, 1pm, At the Rain-Check Lounge?" I asked and he agreed and hung up the phone. Well at least I had got that part out of the way, but what was coming next was going to be a challenge. I was really bad at giving explanations.
I headed out from me apartment, at about 12:30pm, wanting to get to the café early, so that I was waiting for them. I couldn't sit around any longer and was starting to get frustrated so I decided to leave instead. My pace was fast, as I headed in the direction of the main café life of Roarhaven. As I walked, I encountered people, some with direction, others wondering aimlessly. I could feel their emotions like waves, one after the other, washing over me. One extremely bad smelling old, with greasy hair and a pointed nose bumped into me as he stormed passed and I got a glimpse in to his mind with the contact. "I'm going to kill them. I'm going to kill them all, those evil sorcerers at the sanctuary. They will all be gone and his plans will be complete. Sanguine will finally have his revenge."
I stumbled sideways and looked over my shoulder at the old man. I was shocked. He hurried along the street and headed towards the sanctuary and I realised that he had a duffle bag in his hands. What was in there? And why did he want to kill everyone at the sanctuary. He mentioned Sanguine and his revenge. Revenge on what? I needed to call someone at the sanctuary and let them know what was going on. I pulled out my phone from in my small black side bag and dialled Valkyrie's number. "This is Detective Cain." She said in her sing song-y voice and I immediately blocked out her emotions, as mine were too much to deal with alone at the moment and I didn't have time for hers.
"I just passed a man in the street and I bumped into him; his thoughts. He was thinking about killing everyone at the sanctuary, Val." I was panicking now. Great. "Legacy? Calm down, it will be okay. Can you tell me anything else? What he looked like, what he was wearing?" 'Yes. I could do that.' I thought to myself as I took a deep breath and calmed myself. I had become very good at controlling my own emotions, especially in critical situations. "He was about a head taller than me, smelled like something had died in his coat and never took it out. He was old, about 60 in mortal years? He had a really long nose that hooked at the end and a beard, I think. He may have had a beard. I'm not sure. He thought something about working for Sanguine and he, Sanguine, would finally have revenge."
I spoke softly as to not be overheard as I started to walk towards the café, not sure that going to the sanctuary was such a good idea right now. "Ok, so old man, hooked nose, smelly with a coat. Anything else?" she asked and it sounded like she was taking notes. I heard a door open and footsteps on her side of the line. "Skulduggery we have a problem." She said and then to me she spoke again, "I will make sure he doesn't hurt anyone, okay? Just go back to what you were doing and I'll call you when something comes up." And then she hung up. I put the phone back into my bag and realised that I was nearly at the café.
I took another deep breath. I couldn't cancel on them. They deserved an explanation. But my head was thinking about the man and the people at the sanctuary. What if Tanith and Ghastly are there, or even Dexter. I shook the thought from my mind and walked into the café, taking a seat at our usual table. "They can take care of themselves, you don't need to worry about them," I thought to myself as I picked up the menu. I smiled as I saw that there were some drinks I hadn't seen before on the list. I liked the sound of a butter latte and then realised it was a version of the butter beer from Harry Potter. When the waiter came over to my table I ordered one of those and told him that I was waiting for some people when he gave me a sympathetic look and sent his emotions in my direction.
He was feeling unhappy generally, but seeing me alone made him even more so. He also felt depressed and the waves that were coming off of him were sharp and cold. That wasn't a good state to be in and I decided that I would leave him a big tip, to brighten his mood a little bit and smiled at him brightly as he walked up to the counter to make my drink. I sat there in silence for a few minutes and then two people came through the door. One was just shorter than me with long brown hair that seemed to shimmer in the light. Her figure was perfect with just the right amount of butt and breast. Her facial features were warm and inviting, which gave her an air of friendliness. The other was tall and handsome, with brown hair that was slicked back over to one side. He had broad shoulders and looked strong, almost as strong as Dexter, but not quite. He had a goofy smile on his face and when he looked around and saw me it turned to one of annoyance and then pure delight.
I stood up as they both rushed over to me and I hugged them. Having their arms wrapped around me opened up their thoughts and I heard their excited speak running through my mine. "She looks different." "She's finally here; I have missed her so much." "Where the fuck has the bitch been?" I stepped back and took my seat and they sat opposite me in the booth. The waiter came back just as I was about to start explaining and said "Here's your drink. What would you guys like?" He took their orders and then went back to the counter to make them as I sipped my drink and it tasted really good. I looked up and saw that Ben and Amy were staring at me, obviously waiting for me to tell them where I had been. And so I did.
I told them all about my surge and how it happened at Dexter's house, which they looked shocked at as I hadn't really told them much about my relationship with Dexter before I left. I glanced over at the table where we had had our first conversation and then looked back at the two of them, continuing with my story. I told them about how my power was too strong and that I couldn't control it. I told them how I went to Cassandra and she taught me how to control my magic and how to use it like a master. I told them absolutely everything and when I finished I took a really long gulp of my drink and realised that it had gone slightly cold and the others hadn't even touched theirs. I assessed their feelings and felt that Amy was shocked and Ben was less annoyed than he was before. I hope that they understood now why I had to leave and that it would have been too hard to have contact with them. I had come to terms with that myself after a year or two of moping around, missing everything and everyone.
"So, you're powerful then, I take it?" asked Ben and I focused on him to find that he was staring down at his drink playing with the handle of the mug. I felt a wave of guilt wash over me and didn't really understand why. 'I'm fine now, but if I hadn't of left I would have killed people or worse. I nearly killed Cassandra a couple of times. I am so sorry that I left you guys like that but it couldn't be helped." I said and he finally looked up at me, with a tear in his eye that he whipped away embarrassedly. "I want to apologise to you as well. I was mad at you for quite some time for leaving, not knowing full why and I hated you for it. I don't know what I can do to make it up to you Legacy. I'm sorry." I smiled at him reassuringly to make sure he knew I wasn't upset about it and he smiled back. "I gave up on you coming back." Amy said meekly as she stared at her hands that were resting on the table in front of her.
"I don't really blame you. I was gone for ten years. I'm not going to lie, but I would have done the same thing. All that waiting to see if I would come back and not really knowing. I would have wanted to put it behind me and move on and I hope you two have." I paused and Amy looked up at me with her big brown eyes and I saw that she was happy with my response and that I wasn't angry with her. How could I possible deserve to be angry with them, after all the things I put them through? "So what have you been up to?" I asked them and we fell back into an old rhythm. Ben was now an elemental and was very good at manipulating water and earth, which was quite rare as many don't really like using earth. Amy was an adept, a teleporter which was rare and she was also married and her husband was very nice according to Ben.
Amy told me whilst Ben was in the toilet that he was working the gay field and he was a player which is what I always pictured he would do. I never really saw him as the settle down type; he was too flamboyant and needed a change in scenery regularly. Amy as a nurse as the sanctuary and Ben owned a café somewhere. I was so happy to see that they were going well and had good lives that I totally forgot about the threat on the sanctuary so when Valkyrie called me I was surprised that I had done so. But then again, I was known for being forgetful. "Legacy, we found him. Can you come down to the sanctuary and help us interrogate him, we found a bomb in the bag he was carrying and have disarmed it."
I nodded and hung up. "I have to go to the sanctuary. Um… I see you later?" I pulled out my wallet and went to get some money out to pay for my drink but Ben pushed it back into my bag. "Legacy, I own this place now so you don't have to pay." He said and I smiled back remembering back in the day when he said he wanted to run a café. He even joked about buying this one but now I see that he took it seriously. I smiled at him and then remembered the boy from before who was really upset. "I think you need to have a talk to the waiter that served us today. His emotions were running all over the place, he was really depressed." Ben looked at me thoughtfully and nodded. Then I went to the sanctuary.
