Chapter 7: The Sorting Hat

The door swung open at once. A tall, black haired witch in emerald-green robes stood there. She had a very stern face and Serena's first thought was that this was not someone to cross.

"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," said Hagrid.

"Thank you Hagrid. I will take them from here."

She pulled the door wide. The entrance hall was so big you could have fit the whole of the Dursley's house in it. The stone walls were lit with flaming torches like the ones in Gringotts, the ceiling was too high to make out, and magnificent marble staircase facing them led them to the upper floors.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," Professor McGonagall's eyes drifted over the first years. "Now, in a few moments you will pass through these doors-" She indicated to the doors on the right before continuing. "-and join your classmates. But before you take your seats, you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Now, while you're here your house will be like your family, you will have classes with the rest of your house and spend most of your free time in your house common rooms. Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule breaking and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the houses with the most points is awarded the house cup."

She stopped as Neville suddenly pushed forward and crouched down in front of her. "Trevor!" He said excitedly before straightening up to find Professor McGonagall staring sternly down at him. "Sorry," He said before withdrawing behind Serena and Adelinda.

"The Sorting Ceremony will being momentarily." Professor McGonagall announced. "I shall return when we are ready for you, Please wait here." She left the chamber and Serena swallowed nervously.

It didn't last long because a moment later, a boy, a thin, pale boy with pointed features, approached them with two large boys standing on either side of him, reminding the twins of bodyguards.

When the boy spoke, he sounded sneering. "It's true then, what they're saying on the train. Harry and Serena Potter have come to Hogwarts."

"Yes brother dear, you know that's true. You meet Serena on the train, remember" Adelinda said to her brother as the first years were whispering, all staring at the twins.

The boy must have seen them looking at the two boys on either side of him because he said, "This is Crabbe and Goyle," He jerked his head to each of the boys in turn. "And I'm Malfoy." He stepped forward, staring at Serena "Draco Malfoy." He said ignoring his sister's comment.

Besides Harry, Ron snickered softly and Draco Malfoy turned to look at him. "Think my name's funny do you?" His voice went back to a sneer as he said, "No need to ask yours. Red hair and hand-me-down robes?" His eyes darted from his hair to his old robes as he spoke. "You must be a Weasley," He said Ron's surname like it was an insult to be a part of his family before turning back to face Harry and Serena.

"You'll soon find out that some wizarding families are better than others, Potters, You don't want to be making friends with the wrong sort," He glanced towards Ron again who was glaring at him. "I can help you there." He extended his hand, obviously thinking they were going to shake it.

Serena glanced towards his brother wondering what he will do.
"I think we can tell the wrong sort for ourselves thanks," He responded. Serena almost laughed as Malfoy's face fell at Harry's words. He obviously wasn't used to being turned down.

Before anymore words could be passed between them, Professor McGonagall returned. "We're ready for you. Follow me." she instructed.

Serena got in line behind her brother and in front of Christopher, and they walked out of the chamber, through a pair of double doors into the hall.

The twins never imagined such a strange and splendid place. There were four tables that seated what looked like two-thousands Hogwarts students, all dressed in their black robes and craning their necks to see the first years.

High above them, The twins were shocked to see the starry sky. A few students behind her, Serena heard Hermione whisper. "It's not real, the ceiling. It's just bewitched to look like the night outside. I read about it in Hogwarts, A History."

Professor McGonagall silently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first years as they crowded at the front of the hall, right in front of a long table where Serena guessed teachers were sitting because she didn't spot a single student sitting there. On top of the stool, she put out a pointed wizards hat. The hat was frayed and extremely dirty.

"Will you wait along here, please?" Professor McGonagall instructed as the rest of the first years crowded into the space in front of the four long tables. "Now before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words."

"I have a few start-of-term notices I wish to announce," A man with a long white beard and was dressed in elegant robes. "The first years please not, that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Also, our caretaker, Mr. Filch, has asked me to remind you that the third floor corridor on the right hand side is out of bounds to all who do not wish to die a most painful death," A few students laughed at that, as well as Harry, while Serena titled her head, staring at him thoughtfully. He seemed quite serious. "Thank you," Professor Dumbledore sat down and all the students in the hall began clapping.

As the clapping began to die down, Professor McGonagall silently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first years. On top of the stool as a pointed wizard's hat.

Serena watched at the hat opened its mouth and began to sing.

"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!"
the sorting hat singed as the students began to clap.

"When I call your name," Professor McGonagall spoke as the sorting hat finished his song. "You will come forth, I shall place the Sorting Hat on your head and you will be sorted into your houses." Professor McGonagall unrolled a long roll of parchment that fell nearly to the floor. Professor McGonagall read the first name aloud, "Abbott, Hannah". A girl with blond pig-tails walked up to the hat and Professor McGonagall placed the hat on her head. A few minutes later the hat yelled "Hufflepuff" as the students in Hufflepuff cheered.

One by one student's names were called.

"Bones, Susan- Hufflepuff

Boot, Terry- Ravenclaw

Brocklehorst, Mandy- Ravenclaw

Brown, Lavender- Gryffindor

Bulstrode, Millicent- Syltherin

Corner, micheal – Ravenclaw

Goyle, Gregory- Sylerthin"

"Granger, Christopher" McGonagall called at Chris walked up to the hat. A few minutes later the hat yelled "Gryffindor" as the Gryffindor table cheered.

"Granger, Hermione"
Hermione stepped past Serena muttering, "Oh, no. Okay relax," she muttered under her breath as she walked up to the stool and took a seat while Ron said to Harry, "Mental that one, I'm telling you."

Serena giggled and glanced towards Draco who was whispering to his sister. She gave him a small smile before turning back just as the Sorting Hat shouted out, "GRYFFINDOR!" The table on the left side, in the middle, cheered and Hermione, grinning widely, rushed to take her seat in front of an empty golden platter.
McGonagall continued down the list, "Greengrass, Daphne- Slytherin

Hopkins, Wayne- Hufflepuff

Jones, Megan- Hufflepuff

Li, Sue- Ravenclaw

Longbottom, Neville- Gryffindor

MacDougal, Morag- Ravenclaw

MacMillan, Ernest- Hufflepuff"

Professor McGonagall moved on. "Malfoy, Adelinda"

Adelinda walked up the to the hat and the barely touches her head as it screams "Slytherin." Adelinda walked to the Slytherin table as McGonagall called "Malfoy, Draco"
Malfoy swaggered forward as soon as his name was called, giving Serena a sneaky smile as he did so, making Serena blush slightly as Harry looked furious and the hat barely touched his head when it screamed, "SLYTHERIN!"

Draco walked over to the table as McGonagall continued down the list "Malone, Roger- Hufflepuff

Moon, Lily- Hufflepuff

Nott, Theodore- Slytherin

Parkinson, Pansy- Slytherin

Patil, Padma- Ravenclaw

Patil, Parvati- Gryffindor

Perk, Sally-Anne- Hufflepuff"
"Potter, Harry!" McGonagall called as Harry sat on the stool as the students began to whisper.

Harry's sorting took a few moments longer than the other students but he was finally placed in Gryffindor. When the hat screamed "GRYFFINDOR!" The Gryffindor table absolutely went wild. Percy Weasley got up and shook his hand while the Weasley twins shouted, "WE GOT POTTER!"

"Potter, Serena" McGonagall yelled over the twins.
Serena went slightly pink and as she slowly stepped forward; whispers broke out like hissing sakes all over the Great Hall.

She sat down and put the hat on. The last thing she saw was Draco looking at her anxiously before the hat fell over her eyes.

"Hmm...very difficult..." a small voice said in her ear. "We can expect great things from you. And you have quite a good taste for reading and revenge. Revenge on betrayal. You'd make a fine Slytherin. But you are brave and Loyal and you have quite a mind, you would be fine in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. So where do I put you?" "Anywhere you think I would fit in best" Serena thought as she gripped the side of the stool she was sitting in.

"Very well, better be SLYTHERIN" the hat screamed as the hall fell silent.
Serena silently walked over to the Slytherin table as Harry looked at her with a confused face. Serena sat down next to Adelinda as McGonagall calling students up.

"Thomas, Dean- Gryffindor

Turpin, Lisa- Ravenclaw

Weasley, Ron- Gryffindor

Zabini, Blaise- Sleytherin."
"Let the Feast begin!" Dumbledore waved his wand as the last student was called and suddenly the bare tables was covered in wonderful smelling food.

"Wow," Adelinda and Serena said unison as they saw all the food. On the Slytherin table was more food than Serena had seen in her entire life.

By the time desert came, Serena had learned that everyone in the Slytherin House were either pure-blood or half-blood and that they care about blood status.
Serena looked up at the high table where all the teachers sat.
Professor McGonagall was talking to Professor Dumbledore. Professor Quirrell, in his turban, was talking to a teacher with greasy black hair, a hooked nose and sallow skin. It happened so suddenly, the hooked-nose teacher looked past Quirrell's turban and straight into the Serena's eyes-and a sharp hot pain shot across the scars on Serena's foreheads.

"Ouch!" Serena said as she massaged her forehead and groaned in pain.

"What is it?" Adelinda asked, leaning towards her "Are you alright, Serena?"

"No-nothing. I'm fine,"

"Are you sure?" Draco asked from where he was sitting across from Golye.

"I'm fine," she repeated, smiling at her friends' concern. Draco smiled at her which made her smile back.

"Gemma, who is that Professor talking to Prfoessor Quirrell" Serena asked the Prefect, who was siting a few seats from her.
"That is Professor Snape, he is our head of house" Gemma said as Serena turned to look up at the teacher who, she could tell, was giving Harry a cold look but it softened slightly as he spotted Serena also looking up at him.
*After dinner*
The Slytherin first years followed there house prefects, Gemma and Adrian, through the chattering crowds, out of the great Hall and down the marble staircase. The marble staircase lead to the dungeons where at the very end of corridor hung a portrait of a an old man.
"Password?" he asked.

"Cunning Snake," said Adrian and the portrait swung forward to reveal a round hole in the wall. They all scrambled through it and found themselves in the Slytherin common room, a dark yet cozy, round room with squishy armchairs and a view of the lake

Gemma directed the girls through the door to their dormitory and Adrian the boys through the other. Serena follow the girls upstairs as she notice that the only 2 doors had name of them.

The first door said "Millicent Bulstrode, Daphne Greengrass, and Pansy Parkinson" and the second door said "Adelinda Malfoy and Serena Potter".

"Well it looks like we shearing a room together" Adelinda said to Serena as the other 3 girls walked into their room. "I'm glad we are, you are my only friend in this house minus your brother" Serena said as they walked into the room when it suddenly started to change. "wow" the two girls said as the room finished changing, it now two beds, one with purple sheets and the other with blue sheets. On the purple bed sat Serena's kitten, Sarabi and on the blue bed sat a black and white kitten. "Sarabi, there you are" Serena said as she walked over to the purple bed. "Meow" Sarabi said as she curled up on the purple bed. "I think our cats have chosen our beds for us" Adelinda said with a laughed as she sat on the blue bed. "This is Patches by the way" she said holding up her kitten. "Aww he is so cute and this is Sarabi" Serena said holding up her Siamese kitten. "Well we should get to bed, we start classes' tomorrow" Adelinda said as she started going thought her trunk. Serena nodded her head in agreement as the two started to get ready for bed. "Night" Adelinda said as she laid down on the blue bed. "Good night" Serena said as she turned the light off in the room.
